Climbing Rose ‘Royal Gold’ and some Work Gardens
    2008-06-08 05:21:37
Climbing Rose ‘Royal Gold’Rosa ‘Royal Gold’Breeder: Dr. Dennison Morey, United States (1957)Height: 10 feetParentage: Goldilocks, Cl. × Lydia (hybrid tea, Robinson, 1949)Hardy to USDA Zone 6‘Royal Gold’ is a beautiful colored climbing rose that is named perfectly. It is such a deep yellow. It also has strong fragrance. This rose has actually been trained into a pillar type, which is a first for me. So far so good.I picked ‘Royal Gold’ because I wanted this to be a home grown post. I have decided to include a couple of garden pictures from work. You will see why they are not posted very often. I am a lousy landscape photographer and don’t seem to be getting any better. Compressing the photos to fit in this space doesn't help, either. Here a few snapshots from some of the gardens this week. The Estate’s Mountain Laurels (Kalmia) are blooming right now. This is one of the best patches but there are many others spread throughout the garden. This picture was taken lookin...

Beautiful gardens: CANAL GARDENS, LEEDS (part 1)
    2008-03-20 12:15:30
I'm trying not to think about the horrible event of the weekend, I spent the whole day renewing and fixing my lawn and trying to rest my mind of all the sad thoughts. Crawling around my garden with the camera wasn't an option either nor would it bring any delight. However, I've got some great memories and photos I would like to share as it is a place definitely worth a mention and just gazing at them photos makes me feel that world is a better and nicer place.A few years ago, whilse walking through the Roundhay Park in Leeds, UK, a signpost over the road attracted my attention. Canal Gardens! Wasn't that hard as anything with the word 'garden' attracts my attention instantly. I was totally oblivious of the fact that behind that signpost stood one of the most beautiful gardens I've ever seen; a fine, unforgettable Yorkshire garden. Not hard to imagine, as England is well known for its beautiful, distinguished, and well-cared for gardens. It is such a pleasure to find this green oasis whi...

    Travelogue: DUBROVNIK and its gardens
    2008-03-14 12:04:51
The fortified city of Dubrovnik, a World Heritage Site, also known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world and "the pearl of Adriatic", was influenced by the great Renaissance and Gothic eras, "shining" with masterpieces of artwork and architecture. Dubrovnik Old town was built in the 13th century and remains almost untouched to the present day. It is known worldwide for the tall walls that surround the Old town. The natural and historical surroundings; crystal clear Adriatic sea around the islands dotted with cypress trees, hills, castles and cathedrals, create a magic atmosphere Dubrovnik is so famous for. The city's medieval charm opens with its many cafes, restaurants, galleries and shops happily lining its cobblestone streets and the main square. A living fairytale not to be missed and probably the most famous Croatian site. Now that I've fulfilled my patriotic duty by letting everyone know which place not to miss next summer, I secretly admit there's a hidden motive tha...

The Los Angeles Zoo is often overlooked because of it's bigger neighbor to the South, the San Diego Zoo. Many people are surprised to find that the LA Zoo is such a nice place to visit. With over 950 animals and a lush tropical setting the zoo is defiantly worth putting on your LA to do list. A couple of tips to make your LA Zoo visit more enjoyable are to arrive early and take the Zoo tram up the hill to the back exhibits and work your way down the hill. There is more than enough things to keep you busy all day long however the LA Zoo can become quite crowded in the afternoon. Take the kids, have fun and start your LA Zoo adventure early....

From Bare Landscape to Appealing Gardens
    2007-10-10 23:02:44
Normally, we would come up with millions of ideas to maximize what we can do with our landscapes at home. Ideally, turning them into appealing garden designs such as island beds, raised beds and lasagna beds would be good to consider. While we may have our own share of ideas, it all boils down on [...]...

    Miscellaneous Water Gardens
    2007-09-07 11:57:00
Miscellaneous Water GardensI saw some great water gardens this summer. I will leave it up to your imagination to think where these were taken. If you look closely at the Water Lily there was a Bee flying around.Just a short post as I have to leave early for work. I have a couple of early meetings and a few things that I have to take care of before the weekend. I am tired already and will have to take a nap when I get home. I am trying to think of something to do this weekend other than go to the NYBG or Wave Hill. I really enjoyed my trip to Staten Island but don’t want to make that journey. I will probably figure something out.I wanted to add we had a big anthrax scare in my little city. When I got home from work the other day there was a message from the Health Department (those broadcast kind) that they were investigating an Anthrax discovery across town. A road here in town, a main one, has been closed for a couple of days. The phone call told me I had nothing to worry about (yea...

Plantation & Gardens a bountiful bit of old Hawaii
    2007-08-26 03:43:00
Kaneohe, Hawaii - Patsy Fong is sorting ti leaves, hundreds of glossy green leaves piled according to size and quality. She works quickly, seemingly without thought, while carrying on conversations with those arriving at the open-air pavilion of the visitor center at Senator Fong's Plantation & Gardens for a lei-making class. Clearly she has done this before. Important plant, the ti, sacred to Laka, goddess of the hula. One hundred ti leaves add up to a hula skirt. Wrapped in a piece of cloth it will last for years, aging to the rich brown seen in old Hawaii drawings. ...

Chihuly Glass at Fairchild Gardens, Miami
    2007-08-03 12:32:00
Chihuly Glass at Fairchild Gardens, MiamiSince I stayed out late last night here are some archive Chihuly Glass shots from Fairchild Tropical Gardens in Miami. I have recently been going through my hard drives trying to get rid of some old pictures and came across these two. The first one is from the 2007 exhibit and the second one is from 2006.I went to the Foreigner concert last night. It was great. Even though it isn’t my favorite band they really put on a good show. I got a couple of pictures. The first two are Mick Jones the lead guitarist and songwriter. The other one is Kelly Hansen the lead singer with Jason Bonham (drums, his dad was in Led Zeppelin) and Jeff Jacobs. They played a lot of the ‘hits’ and a couple I didn’t recognize. Somehow I had bought front row, dead center tickets. I was sitting next to the mayor and his wife. Here are some other posts I have made on Chihuly Glass:2007 FairchildMore 2007 FairchildGardens and Glass, 2006, NYBG...

The Fitzroy Gardens are a popular tourist attraction, with historic buildings, sculptures and horticulture, and are bounded by Clarendon Street, Albert Street, Lansdowne Street, and Wellington Parade.Fitzroy Gardens are one of the major 19th century landscaped city gardens in Australia and form a wonderful transition between the city and East Melbourne. Fitzroy Gardens were listed on the Heritage Victoria register in 2000. Fitzroy Gardens was named after Sir Charles Augustus Fitzroy (1796-1858), Governor of New South Wales (1846-1851) and Governor-General of the Australian Colonies (1851-1855). Old Westbury Gardens
    2007-06-25 12:01:00
Old Westbury Gardens71 Old Westbury RdOld Westbury, NY 11568http://www.oldwestburygardens.org/On Saturday I went over to Long Island and visited a two gardens. Now I remember why I usually take the Bridgeport to Port Jefferson Ferry as the traffic was a nightmare. I must have been in 10 different slowdowns and 2 or 3 major jams. When I finally got onto the island and made to Old Westbury Gardens all was forgotten. From the moment I pulled off the road I was amazed at the huge Linden Tree allée (it is the driveway, which is slightly curved to give an infinite look) and things just got better after that. I spent most of the afternoon wandering around shooting pictures and enjoying the beautiful day. I would have to give this place a 9 on a scale of 10. The only reason I wouldn’t give it a 10 was it was a little lacking in the shrub and perennial collection. The other thing is I don’t think it had an irrigation system (I might be wrong about that) and it lacked a certain lushness tha...

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens - Charleston, SC
    2007-05-05 16:17:00
My Trip to Magnolia Plantation: Last week a good friend of mine had family in town from Virginia.  Among the must see sights in Charleston, Magnolia Plantation was on the agenda.  I, being a resident of Charleston, had never been to "one of the Top 25 Most Visited Houses in America" before and I jumped at the chance to accompany them. We arrived on a beautiful morning to a friendly staff and reasonable admission rates.  Parking was free and not terribly difficult.  The 3 guided tour options were Nature Boat Ride, Magnolia Plantation House and Nature Train.  We opted for the first two and skipped the train to take a walk in The Audubon Swamp Garden.  The Boat tour was very comfortable.  The open pontoon boat glided along the canals and we were given a concise but not riveting description of the history of the 150 acre rice field.  During the hour long tour we saw many different species of birds and a few alligators!  It was very en...
