How Foreign Policy Affects Gas Prices, by US Rep. Ron Paul
    2008-08-18 11:58:00
We've heard how the value of the dollar affects gas prices – and indeed the price of everything. I was pleased that my request for a hearing on such was granted by the Financial Services committee and we were able to hear some very informative testimony. Certainly domestic policies, regarding off-shore oil drilling bans, ethanol mandates, refining capacity, and CAFE standards are interventionist and harmful enough in the energy market. But how does foreign policy affect gas prices? One important factor is that oil on the world market has been priced in dollars exclusively since 1973. Only two leaders have gone against this arrangement - Saddam Hussein in 2000 and more recently Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with the recently opened Iranian Oil Bourse which trades in non-dollar currencies. But since oil is otherwise exclusively traded in dollars, this means that oil producers have vast amounts of assets held in dollars. Especially since the War on Terror and the PATRIOT Act, many oil-produ...

America Troubled Times High Gas Prices, Losing Homes, Truckers Not Trucking, Groceries More, Airlines in Mess, Worst President Ever is Bush
    2008-08-17 15:49:54
Things are getting so crazy and scary at this moment in America. The president does not even realize how bad things are getting today. The gas prices are so high makes everything go up. Like the cost of living and paying more for groceries. Now people are losing homes because can afford to pay the mortgage. Truckers are not trucking because can’t afford to the gas without them we don’t get the food to the stores. Then airlines have gone out of business because of the gas prices. We are in t...

High Gas Prices Getting Crazy How High Could They Get, Now $4.00 Gas Will It Become $5, $10, $20, $100, or Even More per Gallon to Fill Car
    2008-08-07 11:53:54
High gas prices this is getting crazy what is going on with all these high gas prices in last few years in the United States. Are we being scammed by these prices or is shortage of gas or oil companies are defrauding us as some have mentioned in the news. In my opinion I think the oil companies are defrauding us. Plus politicians could do more but they are probably being paid by the oil companies to be quiet. Then that makes them not try to make the prices lower. None of the politicians thinks ...

Obama: Tap nation’s oil reserve to help gas prices
    2008-08-04 11:25:31
CHICAGO (AP) - Barack Obama is proposing tapping the nation’s strategic oil reserves to help drive down gasoline prices, his campaign said Monday. Obama supports releasing light oil from the emergency oil stockpile now and replacing it later with heavier crude more suited to the country’s long-term needs, according to a campaign fact sheet. Light crude [...]...

How To Respond To The Republican and Big Oil Lies About Gas Prices
    2008-07-25 16:07:00
The Republicans and their shady front groups are trying to shirk responsibility for high gas prices and trying to blame Democrats. The Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming has a point by point rebuttal to the GOP lies and obfuscations. The Republican “plan” is more of the same– more of exactly what [...]...

Ad Wars: McCain Hits Obama On Gas Prices
    2008-07-21 14:48:20
Check out our entire video library at Political Realm TV, which now includes more than 500 videos.Presidential WatchJohn McCain is hitting Barack Obama again, this time focusing on rising gas prices. "Pump" is a 30-second spot that will air in Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, the Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin markets, as well as on national cable. Blaming Obama for the rising gas costs seems a little foolish, given that Republicans have controlled the White House for the past eight years and had majorities in Congress for much of that time.A new conservative group, Let Freedom Ring, is also hitting Obama in a new ad, though the extent of their buy is currently unknown. The ad suggests Obama is "worse than a flip-flopper," holding two positions on issues at the same time--"both ways Barack." For an attack ad, it's rather light-hearted, though I'm not sure how many voters are really going to see this ad or be affected by its...

Toyota Cut U.S Truck,SUV As High Gas Prices
    2008-07-14 08:26:00
Facing surging gasoline prices and strong demand for fuel-efficient cars, Toyota Motor Corp. will suspend production of large pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles in the United States from early August to November.Japan's top automaker will also produce its popular Prius gasoline-electric hybrid model in the late 2010s at an assembly plant being built in Mississippi, dropping its initial plan to produce the Highlander midsize SUV, a Toyota spokeswoman said Friday. The decision apparently marks a turnaround in Toyota's strategy in North America, where it made a foray into the market for full-size pickup trucks last year to penetrate one of the last remaining bastions of General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler. The decision was prompted by a 21 percent plunge in Toyota's U.S. sales in June. This contrasts clearly with results at Honda Motor Co., which chalked up a slight increase in sales in the U.S., where the second-biggest automaker in Japan doesn't manufacture large pickup...

The Gas Prices Force Us into Change but Maybe this is Time of Change to New Ways of Living Life

I was thinking about these gas prices I even blog about it many times. I have realized lately maybe these gas prices force us into change. What kind of change of better or worse who knows but we will all learn something from this. Maybe the change of new type of vehicles to new ways of living life back to the simple way. Make us realized the simple things in life again or a new way. Like instead of using vehicles maybe ride a bicycle. Instead of buying vegetables at the store grow a garden of yo...

Gas prices rise along with interest in motorcycles
    2008-07-02 16:18:00
As you may have noticed, we've been featuring more two-wheeled content lately as interest in motorcycles and scooters has risen rather dramatically along with the increase in fuel prices. While we can appreciate the reduced cost of operation that sometimes goes along with choosing a motorcycle over four-wheeled transport, the enjoyment some of us get from bikes easily eclipses our desire to save at the pump. After all, this particular blogger has been riding since the days of buck-a-gallon gas. Still, the growing trend of drivers dropping half their wheels in the name of gas conservation deserves close examination and has even caught the attention of Consumer Reports. In fact, a recent survey conducted by the group has found that a staggering 26-percent of respondents have considered downsizing from four wheels to two. According to CR, their team is intently studying this two-wheeled phenomenon in an effort to become acquainted with the products on the market, how often they are ridden...

Detroit Thinks Small: With gas prices going to stay high, this time it's for real
    2008-07-01 08:55:00
Can Detroit make money on compact cars? Since General Motors launched the Chevrolet Corvair in the Autumn of 1959, the answer has been a resounding "no." That may finally change, with GM, Ford Motor Company, and Chrysler LLC facing stricter Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards beginning in 2011 (the same year GM expects last fall's United Auto Workers contract finally to start paying off) and $4-per-gallon gas forcing the issue this year, anyway. The Detroit Three are ready to make more cars than trucks again -- the market has already dictated that -- and the C-segment (Civic, Corolla, Focus, Golf, etc.) is the next big thing, with more refined, better-equipped models on the way.Leading off this movement is the 2011 Chevrolet compact. Combine the now-signature Chevrolet horizontally split grille with "fierce-eye" headlamps and a rakish, coupelike four-door roofline, and you've got the replacement for the Cobalt, coming in two years. At GM's annual meeting, Rick Wagoner dropped all k...

German Man Torches BMW 3-Series Sedan to Protest High Gas Prices
    2008-06-30 00:04:00
BERLIN - A German man doused his BMW with gasoline and torched it today in protest at skyrocketing fuel costs, police said. The unemployed 30-year-old man drove the black 1995 BMW 3-series sedan onto the lawn outside Frankfurt's convention center grounds at about 7:30 a.m., police spokesman Karlheinz Wagner said.He then jumped out, emptied a canister of gas over the vehicle, and set fire to it, Wagner said.By the time the fire department got to the scene, the car was entirely burned out.The Bavarian man, whose name was being withheld because he has not been charged with a crime, told police that gas prices were so high he could no longer afford to drive the vehicle. As in many countries, gasoline prices have risen steadily in Germany; a liter of regular gasoline now costs about 1.55 euros, or $9.40 per gallon.Police were investigating whether the man could be charged with violating German environmental laws with the stunt, Wagner said. Penalties range from fines to five years in prison.+...

Airline cuts, high gas prices hit Las Vegas
    2008-06-18 21:56:00
LAS VEGAS - SIN City is facing hard times. Soaring fuel prices are forcing airlines to cut flights and jack up fares to this desert oasis. Road trips have become luxury travel with gasoline costing more than US$4 (S$5.47) a gallon. And tourists who do make it to Las Vegas are spending less, leading casinos to offer deals just to keep them in their resorts. 'The overall economic uncertainty this country is facing ... makes the outlook for the next several months very murky,' said Mr Gary Thompson, spokesman for Harrah's Entertainment, owner of seven Las Vegas casinos. US Airways Group announced last week that it was cutting nearly half its Las Vegas flights as part of companywide belt-tightening. That will leave 74 US Airways flights per day by the end of the year, down from a peak of 141 in September 2007. The result is more than 8,000 fewer seats available per day, compared to the 2007 peak, according to data from the Clark County Department of Aviation. US Airways was the second-larg...

Gas Prices: A Failure of Conservatism
    2008-06-12 07:04:00
Gas prices have become one of the most important political issues this year. When the average price of a gallon of gas first reached $2 a gallon, there was shock. When they reached $3 a gallon, there was disbelief. And now they have topped $4 a gallon. People are suffering. Small businesses are suffering. Truckers are suffering. Farmers are suffering. Airlines are suffering. Everyone is suffering.Last month I wrote about the absurdity of the gas tax holiday that John McCain has proposed. (Hillary Clinton also proposed this, but she's not a candidate anymore.) I argued that repealing the gas tax (currently 18.4 cents per gallon) would only encourage more consumers to buy more gas at a time when we're complaining about our dependence on foreign oil. Reducing our consumption of foreign oil and making gas cheaper by temporarily eliminating a fuel tax are not reconcilable. To drive down gas prices, you only have two choices: increase supply or reduce demand. Repealing the gas tax does neithe...

Why The Market Affects Gas Prices
    2008-06-08 07:56:43
A recent downturn in gas prices has come as a welcome relief to most drivers in North America. The timing, however, of the price drop has many people thinking conspiracy theory. A recent poll of Americans showed that a staggering 42 percent of respondents believe that George W. Bush and the ruling Republican administration in Washington lowered gas prices in time for the November 2006 mid-term elections. While this may or may not be the case, the various stock markets around the world do have a real time impact on the price of oil, and therefore gasoline. The biggest culprit in the lowering of gas prices might actually be Mother Nature. In preparation for the upcoming hurricane season, many investors on Wall Street and around the world invested heavily in gas and oil futures, guessing that another direct hit by a Katrina-like storm directly on gas and oil pipelines in the Gulf of Mexico would send prices through the roof like they did last year. But a recent correction by hurricane fore...

The Cold Hard Truth About Gas Prices
    2008-06-05 01:42:49
Over at the NY Times Thomas Friedman dreams of a presidential candidate telling America the truth about gas prices:For starters, he or she would explain that there is no short-term fix for gasoline prices. Prices are what they are as a result of rising global oil demand from India, China and a rapidly growing Middle East on top of our own increasing consumption, a shortage of “sweet” crude that is used for the diesel fuel that Europe is highly dependent upon and our own neglect of effective energy policy for 30 years.Cynical ideas, like the McCain-Clinton summertime gas-tax holiday, would only make the problem worse, and reckless initiatives like the Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep offer to subsidize gasoline for three years for people who buy its gas guzzlers are the moral equivalent of tobacco companies offering discounted cigarettes to teenagers. He then goes on to promote a government mandated four dollar floor price for a gallon of gas. While some think its a bad idea whereas I think its a...

    More about gas prices
    2008-05-29 02:24:05
Gasoline prices | Salon TechnologyEven the people who have spent their entire lives studying the price of oil don't know for sure how to weigh each factor for responsibility in the total equation. Perhaps the safest thing to say is that it's all in there, in my $65 receipt. Kidnappings of oil executives in Nigeria and the nationalization of Exxon-operated facilities in Venezuela. Chinese economic growth and hedge fund manipulation. ANWR and air quality. The price of gas in the United States is a consequence of global economic growth, rising standards of living, greed, politics and the stresses induced by 6.5 billion people going about their business on a planet with limited resources.Gas prices continue to break records every day. As I continue along the road to planning my return to the States, even I have begun to get a little nervous about paying to fill the tank. My overall plan involves living where I have to drive less, and eventually using more fuel efficient transportation, b...

Geo Metros going for big money on high gas prices
    2008-05-17 11:26:00
We got a tip yesterday that Geo Metros were being auctioned on eBay Motors for prices above what the tiny cars cost new. This auction for a 1993 Geo Metro XFI with just 22,501 miles ended yesterday with a winning bid of $7,200! Why has the resale value of the Metro and other tiny econocrap cars gone through the roof? The simple answer: gas prices. Vehicles like the Metro, the Suzuki Swift on which it's based, Ford Aspire and Festiva, and Hyundai Excel were around before federal safety regulations and public pressure demanded that every car survive an impact from any angle with five stars. That kind of safety adds weight, and modern econocars are therefore much heavier and therefore less fuel efficient than they were in the early '90s.The aforementioned Metro XFI is powered by an anemic 1.0L three-cylinder engine producing just 49 hp, but it returns between 55 and 60 mpg. Cars like this defined the phrase 'fuel-sipping' and made passing on the highway a strategic maneuver involving lots...

High Gas Prices Makes Everything Increase in Price Like Higher Prices on Food, Clothing, is Stemmed from Higher Gas Price that Affects the Economy
    2008-05-16 10:12:40
Everyone is wondering why is everything is increasing in price. The higher prices on products in the stores is because of the high gas prices is the main reason for all this. High gas prices makes everything go up with costs to become more expensive to buy everything. Which creates a economy to be not as healthy for us all as it is now. I think it is all about the gas prices that has lead us to this now because we all have cars that need it. What many don’t realize everything is stemmed from t...

House acts to lower gas prices; Rothman-backed legislation passes by veto-proof majority to force Bush to suspend oil purchases for Strategic Reserve
    2008-05-14 13:37:00
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The House of Representatives last night passed legislation strongly supported by Congressman Steve Rothman, D-Fairlawn, that will lower record-high gas prices by suspending oil purchases for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) until the end of the year. This move could save Americans 5 to 24 cents a gallon. Yet, President Bush has ignored repeated pleas from both Democratic and Republican members of Congress to act.“Gas prices have more than doubled since George W. Bush took office, from a national average of $1.47 per gallon to an eye-popping $3.72 per gallon. American families and small business owners are being squeezed without mercy and all Bush seems to do is shrug,” Rothman said. “As president, he could have already suspended purchases for the reserve, putting 70,000 barrels of oil back on the market each day and relieving some of the upward pressure on prices. Now that both the Senate and House have passed legislation to do just that, with enough vot...

    High Gas Prices: SO WHAT!
    2008-05-12 11:39:00
So, is someone holding a gun to your families head threatening to shoot if you don't drive that Cadillac Escalade? No? Perhaps your pet's have been kidnapped, never to return unless you drive that 8-cylinder Mustang GT. No again? The you don't have reason to whine. But much reason to learn about economies.Apparently, it's a topic the major media outlets skipped in journalism school. Instead, they opted for electives like "Reality Shows 101." This being since all we hear anymore is a few seconds of how terrible gas prices are these days. The remainder of the newscast is nothing but who got the boot from Dancing with the Stars or American Idol.Go figure. So here is some general info to put some things into perspective for those who "missed" how prices work. And hopefully, will effectively turn the "whiny factor" off for many of them.Grocery Stores. One Reason Our Gas Prices Are So High?

INDIA, CHINA, SAUDI STATE SUBSIDIESSometimes you aren’t quiet sure if a story is correct.  Evidently there is some truth to this one.  I handle Whitley Strieber with kid gloves.  I’ve been told (years ago) by someone who worked with him, that there are problems, and will elaborate no further. Consequently, when I found this fascinating little article on one of the unarticulated reasons our gas prices are so high, I had to investigate a little.  Well, it appears as though Strieber might be correct. He wrote: “…The reason for this is that Asian demand remains explosively high due to ......

But believe it or not, the sign is once again accurate, as for the first time in what seems like centuries, gas prices fell this week -- and a report today say we might finally be at the peak for prices (and that they might even drop some)! What a relief this would be on the American people.Let's hope the prices really do continue to drop.Just a year ago this week, one could get a gallon of regular gas for about $2.42 a gallon. Right now, the average price for a gallon of gas in New Jersey is almost $1 more....

    Fighting Back (Gas Prices Edition)
    2008-04-30 00:32:33
Well we did it. We went out and bought a brand new car. After hours of research half a dozen test drives and two weekends spent shopping for cars we finally bought a 2008 Nissan Versa hatchback for me to drive. We weren't planning on buying a new car quite this soon but my 1998 Ford Taurus' transmission started slipping (only if you gunned it) and rather than spend 700 to 1000$ repairing it when it finally crapped out we opted to trade it in for 700$ (fair market value IMO). We got a good rate of 4.9% due to my wife's superior credit score and monthly payment of 305$ for a 17,000$ car (including extended warranty). We picked it primarily because it was the most fuel efficient vehicle in its class getting 33 MPG on average (38 MPG possible driving 65, on a flat interstate, with one passenger of average weight, with cruise control on, and the car being well maintained.) was highly recommended by Consumer Reports, and had the most bells and whistles of any car in its class including ABS, k...

High Gas Prices; Does It Matter?
    2008-04-28 21:41:00
High Gas Prices are an immediate discussion when someone comes to the car lot. The first thing most say is "I bet you are making GREAT Deals on SUV's." Or, "I bet you can't give those Yukon's away." My response is always the same, "They are actually our best seller right now!" It is the truth, but I love to see the expression on peoples faces when I say this. When the fact is, they are also looking at the large SUV and hoping I would say we could not give them away. That was VERY strange! As I am typing this article, I hear the news say GM is laying 3500 workers off due to low sells of Large Trucks and SUV's! I work at a GM lot and SUV's are selling better than ever at my dealership. Gas prices at this time in my area are around $3.45 for regular unleaded, but this seems to be an afterthought for customers. Most feel if they are going to pay these types of gas prices, they are going to ride in comfort. So much for my thought that this was the case across the country after hearing of th...

Ad Wars: Clinton Talks Gas Prices In Indiana
    2008-04-26 11:04:14
Today we look at races from the increasingly bitter Democratic gubernatorial race in North Carolina, the Democratic Senate primary in Kentucky, and the presidential race in Indiana. Check out our entire video library at Political Realm TV.Hillary ClintonComing off a must-win victory in Pennsylvania, the Clinton camp has turned its focus to Indiana, where polls show the race a toss-up. Clinton's latest ad, "Cost," focuses on rising prices at the pump and addresses Clinton's plan for energy independence. The ad also takes a not-so-subtle shot at Obama in closing, "With gas this expensive, talk is cheap--It's time for leadership."Gubernatorial Watch: North CarolinaThe two leading Democratic candidates, Lieutenant Governor Bev Perdue and Treasurer Richard Moore, have been exchanging negative ads for weeks. Gas prices will jump 22¢ overnight on the NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway
    2008-04-24 22:01:00
If you watched the television news at any point tonight, you might have thought you were watching coverage from decades ago, when there was a gas shortage.Motorists at rest areas on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway lined up for hours to get the cheapest gas in the state — at $3.17 a gallon. By contract, the service stations on the state roads can only raise prices once a week, on Friday. And come 7 a.m. Friday, the price will jump 22¢ a gallon.Things are so bad — even here where gas is usually cheaper than anywhere else — that some stations are now on the verge of selling $4 gallons. And $5 is apparently not that far off.And our President says our nation isn't experiencing economic problems.Disgusting! Is there a more clueless man on the face of the earth than George W. Bush?In 270 days, Bush will be gone for good. And looking at the state of affairs in this nation right now — not just with gas prices, but in almost every facet of American life — those 270 day...

Republican Leaders Challenge Democrats to Lower the Gas Prices
    2008-04-24 04:56:01
Before the election of 2006 when Democrats regained control of the house and senate Democrats promised that they had a plan to lower the cost of gas. All we had to do was elect them and they would unveil their secret plan and gas prices would magically be reduced. It hasn’t happened, as a matter [...]...

Gas prices may reach $5 a gallon by the summer, and no thanks to our state and federal leaders, that leaves you and me screwed!
    2008-04-23 23:14:00
For some strange reason, I cannot forget this obscure day in August 2003.I was with a friend of mine, Joe, and we had just gone from Kearny to Belleville to grab a bite to eat at, of all places, Taco Bell. When we headed over the Passaic to Belleville, just before we got to the bridge, we stopped at the little gas station next to what is now Dunkin Donuts — the former Pete’s Place. I filled up my tank, and it cost me about $19. The price: $1.33 per gallon of regular. After we came back, something stunning happened at that same gas station — the prices jumped — from $1.33 to $1.55. Who would have known that this very moment, a 20¢ jump in price for a gallon of gas, would be the first in a series of price spikes that would lead to where we are today. At first glance, that $1.55 seemed absurd. But then it was $1.65, $1.75, $1.85, $1.95 — and then, that dreaded day — the gas signs said $2.01. Like me, I am sure you were just as disgusted with the prices when they hit that awful ...

    Fighting Higher Gas Prices
    2008-04-23 22:25:32
With some people paying 100$ to fill up their tanks it time to repost my list of gas saving tips...gasbuddy.com tracks prices all over America on a station by station basis. They have websites for most major cities (insert city name)gasprices.com so for me its sanantoniogasprices.comAlso make sure your tires are properly inflated normally thats 35 on the little meter thingy for most cars and light trucks. Under inflated tires can cost ya 2 mpg.Remove any dead bodies from your trunk, move that dashboard altar inside, and limit yourself to 1 gun and 2 magazines per car. 100 additional pounds = 1 mpgTime for that tune up and/or oil change that you've been putting off = up to 5 mpg (if you're bad about maintenance, request platinum plugs, they last for 3 years)Other maintenance Air Filter (you CAN do this yourself in 5 minutes), PCV valve (costs 5$ and is as easy to change as an air filter), Fuel filter (these suckers vary wildly in price and ease of installation ask your mechanic about it...

Gov’t Says Gas Prices Could Hit $4
    2008-04-08 11:12:32
NEW YORK (AP) - Retail gas prices could climb as high as $4 a gallon this summer, but prices at such lofty levels will make many Americans think twice about hitting the road this summer, the Energy Department said Tuesday. High prices and a weak economy are expected to cut demand for gasoline by about 0.4 [...]...

Gas prices on the rise - a survey
    2008-03-28 18:13:28
Of course 'Gas prices' means something different in the UK than it does in the US, so a survey entitled GAS PRICES ON THE RISE might seem more poignant for those of us who have just received our gas bill!! aaarrgghhHowever we can all relate to fuel prices of all types going up, what they don't realise in the US though is just how much we pay for car fuel...They don't pay anything near the prices that we pay over here. Have a go at the survey and earn a few cents for your trouble......

California Gas Prices at Near Record High
    2008-02-28 08:31:00
California gas prices are just pennies below the record set last summer. California's prices are already 56 cents higher than at this time a year ago, and forecasters say the nationwide average may hit $3.50 to $3.75 a gallon by Memorial Day. The surge in gas prices is going to make travel very expensive this summer. One way you can fight the hig cost is by taking local trips instead of that long drive to a different state. Here are some examples on how much it will cost to drive at $3.25 per gallon in a vehicle that get 15 miles per gallon.20 miles - $4.3430 miles - $6.5050 miles - $10.82100 mile - $21.67250 miles - $54.17 (round trip to San Diego form LA area)300 miles - $65.00 (Palms Springs and back form Orange County)525 miles - $113.60 (Las Vegas round trip form Los Angeles)As you can see taking a long trip is getting very expensive, add in lodging, food, tickets and any extras and a driving vacation is going to make a big dent in your bank account. All is not lost you can...

South Carolina Gas Prices are Lowest across U.S.
    2007-07-17 17:45:00
Report: S.C. gas prices are lowest across U.S. State average cost: $2.83, says AAA South Carolinians may complain about paying an arm and a leg to fill up their gas tanks, but they can find comfort in a AAA survey released Monday that shows the state has the cheapest gas in the country. A gallon of regular gas in South Carolina averaged $2.83 on Monday, according to AAA's gas-tracking Web site www.fuelgaugereport.com. That's down .004 cents from Sunday and below the average U.S. price of $3.05 a gallon, which also dropped .004 cents from Sunday. North Carolina has the twelfth-lowest gas price, at an average $2.95 per gallon. The most expensive regular gas can be found in Nebraska at $3.33 a gallon. Prices spiked in the last couple weeks because of outages at several U.S. oil refineries, but "it's starting to dribble down again," AAA Carolinas spokesman Tom Crosby said Monday. Drivers on the Grand Strand are still paying the highest cost for gas in the cheapest state. The M...

Gas Prices Close to All Time High
    2007-05-23 01:36:41
Regular Unleaded Just Shy of '81 MarkBy Steven MufsonWashington Post Staff WriterTuesday, May 22, 2007; D01Gasoline prices last week came within a half penny of tying the modern era's inflation-adjusted record set in March 1981, the Energy Department said yesterday. The nationwide price of unleaded regular gasoline hit $3.218 a gallon, barely below the adjusted $3.223 a gallon level 26 years ago. Behind the rise were high crude oil prices and disruptions in output at oil refineries. The 1981 record was set two years after the Iranian revolution brought down the pro-American shah, seven months after war broke out between Iraq and Iran and two months after President Ronald Reagan ended U.S. oil price and allocation controls. The current rise in prices has been harder for consumers to understand. While Nigerian insurgents have curtailed production by about 800,000 barrels a day, there hasn't been any major cut in crude oil supplies, and crude oil inventories are adequate.Instead, industry...

High Gas Prices; 5-15-07 Gas Station Ban
    2007-05-06 05:54:00
Have you seen the email circulating around the internet urging internet users to not buy gas on 5-15-07. Here is how it reads:Don't pump gas on may 15thIn April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide inprotest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight. On May 15th 2007, all internet users are to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places. There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internetnetwork, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up.If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take $2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companies pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day. If you agree resend this to all your contact list. With it saying, Don't pump gas on May 15thGas prices have topped $3.00 per gallon in...
