almost simultaneously
stopped our vehicles near the only pump
our eyes met through the auto glass
and like two insects
inaudible clicking begins
our minds gave way to primal instinct
in this untamed wilderness
our cars were flocks of sheep
competing for space at some muddy
watering hole
she gestured, 'Go ahead'
and I gestured, 'No you'
then, after a moments' hesitation
she pulls up to the pump
and I think out loud, "That's weird"
digesting what just transpired
ending her gas station ritual
that metallic clink of hose and pump was my cue
so sending her a friendly glance
before stepping out of my car
I thought I'd break the ice with a flirt
but it comes out a grunt,
"Something wrong with a little chivalry?"
"No, but you can't be too careful these days.
People are crazy."
She left me with this epiphany
avoid confrontation
be wary of anyone you meet
who might perceive your action as provocation
you'll never know who you'll meet on the road
