Gasoline theft in Hawaii on the rise
    2008-05-28 12:04:00
With the cost of gasoline skyrocketing, thieves in Hawaii -- where the average price easily exceeds $4 per gallon -- have taken extraordinary measures to steal fuel. Only mildly deterred by locking gas caps, bandits have been cutting fuel lines to circumvent the common preventatives. With nothing more than a straight edge blade, a piece of garden hose, and a bucket, the lawless make easy work of the plastic fuel lines under cars as they cut them to gain simple access to the tank and its flammable yet valuable liquid contents. So far, most of the victims have been businesses or commercial ventures with several large trucks in their fleet. Parked unattended in lots overnight, their 20-30 gallon fuel tanks and raised ride height make them easy targets with larger yields than the average passenger vehicle. To deter the theft, business owners have installed sophisticated video surveillance cameras on their property and outfitted some vehicles with steel gas lines. "If they're crazy enough t

Cut Gasoline Cost Not Only the Toyota Prius
    2008-04-21 11:52:00
With the price of oil and gasoline hitting record highs, it's time to wake up and face the crude truth on how you can save money on energy costs. As commodity traders push oil prices ever higher as the dollar recedes, there's little, if any, relief in sight at the fuel pump or from soaring utility bills.Yet the deer-in-the-headlights attitude that most investors, vehicle owners and homeowners adopt is misguided. There are quite a few actions you can take to beat the escalating cost of energy. The most-common response to high gasoline prices is to go out and purchase a high-mileage vehicle. This reaction certainly hasn't hurt the sales of companies such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co., which offer several fuel-stingy cars, trucks and vans.If you have a long commute or simply drive a lot, you'll immediately see the savings. There will be longer times between fill-ups. It may not make sense to pay a premium for these cars, though. The top two highest-mileage cars -- the Toyota Pri

Gasoline Price Climbing, Americans Drive Less
    2008-04-09 08:47:00
As gasoline prices broke records in 2007, Americans cut back on their driving for the first time in more than 20 years, according to the US Federal Highway Administration.Total travel fell 0.4 per cent to 3.00 trillion miles from 3.01 trillion miles in 2006.In December, when US retail gasoline averaged $US3.02 a gallon ($NZ1.02/litre), travel fell 3.9 per cent to 236.6 billion miles from 246.3 billion miles in 2006.With gasoline prices still climbing, other data shows Americans are responding by changing their gas-guzzling habits. Not only are they driving less, but they are buying more fuel-efficient vehicles and using more public transport.Daily ridership on US subways and public buses is at the highest level in more than 50 years.Energy Secretary Sam Bodman has said he is concerned that average US gasoline pump prices could hit $US3.50 ($NZ1.16/litre) a gallon this summer, and said he is "optimistic" that OPEC will come to the rescue of US drivers. The US retail price of gasoline set

Whoops - employee accident brings 33 cent gasoline to Wisconsin town, frenzy ensues
    2007-12-09 18:52:02
While Americans might be more and more conscious about using less gas, if you start (almost) giving it away, the conserving mentality goes right out the window. Last week, the AP reports, a gas station employee in Wisconsin goofed up before leaving the shop for the night, setting the price of gas to 32.9 cents instead of $3.299. Guess how long it took for someone to discover the cheap gas and then tell all their friends? Not long. The incident happened in Minocqua, Wisconsin, at Trig's Minocqua Shell. After the station closed at 10, the cheap gas prices kicked in and, since the pumps still accepted credit cards, people quickly spread the word. Before too long, 586 gallons were sold at the cheap price. Once police noticed the crowd at the pumps and called the station manager, the price was corrected. The manager was a little peeved at the customers, many of them regulars, calling them dishonest. I think it just shows once again how eager we are for gas (I'm guilty here, too, don't ge

    GERMANY: Goodbye Gasoline [video]
    2007-07-06 05:35:00
Saxony-Anhalt is one of Germany’s principal energy providers. Despite the extensive adjustment process of the last decade, brown coal remains the most important source of energy extracted there, followed by natural gas. Renewable energy has also gained a foothold, and promises considerable development potential.None of these individual goals is given absolute priority; it is only by pursuing all three objectives vigorously that the conditions will be created in the medium to long term which enable Saxony-Anhalt to expand into a high-performance energy centre catering successfully for the needs of the industry and medium-sized enterprises locating there.Demand for biofuel is soaring, which is good news for sugar beet farmers in Germany. European officials want to replace 10 percent of transport fuel with biofuel by the year 2020. Police fatally taser gasoline-soaked suspect
    2007-06-21 18:49:25
As we’ve reported before, tasers might not be as safe as their makers like to claim. Juan Flores Lopez, a Texas man who had doused himself in gasoline, became the latest unfortunate taser-related casuality when police used the stun device (which sometimes emit sparks) during his arrest. “We don’t know what ignited the fire,” perplexed officers admitted. The case is currently being investigated by the Texas Rangers. [Via Digg]

Man Doused With Gasoline Catches Fire, Dies at Hospital After Police Fire Taser Gun at Him
    2007-06-20 00:37:59
SAN ANGELO, Texas — A man who doused himself with gasoline then caught on fire after police fired a Taser stun gun at him died from his injuries Tuesday, a hospital spokeswoman said. Juan Flores Lopez, 47, was hospitalized after the confrontation with officers in his yard Monday. Police said they used pepper spray while trying to take Lopez into custody, but that he was never handcuffed. Lopez had a can of gas and a small lighter in his hand at one point, police Lt. Curtis Milbourn said. He tossed gas at officers, but no one was injured, police said. The Texas Rangers were investigating whether a lighter found at the scene could have contributed to the fire and whether a Taser can ignite anything, Lt. Bob Bullock said. “We don’t know what ignited the fire,” Milbourn said. Two of Lopez’s sons who live nearby said their father had been threatening for months to burn himself and his house. His wife was seeking a divorce and he didn’t want to have to leave

oil stocks: Crude Oil May Rise as U.S. Gasoline Output Lags, Survey Shows
    2007-06-15 10:38:00
&Crude oil may rise next week on concern that U.S. refineries aren't producing enough gasoline to keep up with increasing consumption. Eighteen of 37 analysts surveyed, or 49 percent, said oil prices will increase. Ten, or 27 percent, said prices will be little changed and nine forecast a decline. Last week, 36 percent of respondents said prices would fall. Refineries operated at 89.2 percent of capacity in the week ended June 8, the lowest rate in 15 years for the period, an Energy Department report showed. Gasoline inventories increased 3,000 barrels, the least since April. Oil often follows gasoline during the summer months. U.S. gasoline use peaks between the Memorial Day holiday in May and Labor Day in early September. Crude oil for July delivery rose $2.89, or 4.5 percent, to $67.65 a barrel in the first four days of trading this week on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Yesterday's settlement price was the highest since Sep

    No Sleep, No Gasoline
    2007-06-14 09:21:29
So we feel that sleeping is something we can take for granted. Sleep helps us move and go forth. Similar to cars, a person without sleep will encounter bumpy roads along the way since chances are; they would get dizzy spells and long for a short nap or sleep. A person can only go so much when he lacks sleep. Further, he may underachieve and one day just stumble and fall. We can only go towards a certain extent, but continuous abuse through foregoing the required amount of sleep that all people would need is a path in the wrong direction. There is a point where people may break down, and lack of energy to carry out things both in mind and body will prove to be costly at some point. Sleep is like gasoline and people just have to deal with it and live life through them. eNergy Stocks: Stop Blaming Oil For High Gasoline Prices
    2007-06-08 06:20:00
If you've been wondering why gasoline prices have been so high lately with crude oil trading at only $66 per barrel, the answer can be found at the refineries. This week's TWIP (This Week in Petroleum) from the Energy Information Administration has some interesting commentary and, as always, abundant charts to tell the story of how retail gasoline prices have fallen for the second consecutive week, down five cents to $3.16 per gallon. First, it should be clear that this is not an oil problem. U.S. oil inventories, the biggest raw material cost for gasoline (duh!) have been at or above the range considered normal for this time of year. There is no oil problem - that will occur sometime in the future, maybe soon, we'll see. Yet, prices at the pump remain near record highs, particularly here on the West Coast where special formulation requirements and higher taxes almost always result in higher prices. Lucky us - at least there's no big brown cloud hanging over the Western U.S. (e

Does Your Car Really Need Premium Gasoline?
    2007-05-31 15:33:38
There’s been a lot of talk lately as to whether or not your car needs premium fuel, or if it’s just a waste of money. Most sources say that unless you have a high-compression engine, standard or mid-grade gas should be fine, even if your car says it wants premium. Both of my cars say that they want premium fuel, so I decided to try it out on my 1997 Nissan Maxima. I wasn’t about to test on my Nissan 300ZX, the compression ratio is really high on it anyway. So after reading all these articles saying that I should only use regular or mid-grade gas, I waited until my fuel tank was empty, and filled up on some 89 octane ethanol-blend mid-grade. On the way home, I did notice a decrease in power, but nothing serious. The next morning (which happened to be in the winter,) the car took longer to start; it would struggle to turn over. Was it because it was ridiculously cold? Possibly, but it was even colder the day before, and it ran just fine. The problem continued througho

AMERICA: Memorial Day Motorists Will Pay Record Gasoline Prices in U.S.
    2007-05-26 01:17:00
by Jordan BurkeTravelers during the Memorial Day weekend will pay record gasoline prices and may face even higher charges on the way home. The national average price for regular gasoline climbed 39 percent this year to more than $3.20 a gallon as refinery breakdowns cut production. Inventories are 7 percent below the five-year average, prompting some analysts to predict more increases. ``There is no mathematical way we can catch up'' to replenish supplies, said Mark Routt at Energy Security Analysis Inc. in Wakefield, Massachusetts. ``The pressure is going to be on through September.'' Prices rose 15 days in a row to a record $3.227 a gallon on May 23, AAA said on its Web site. Futures have jumped 47 percent this year, including a 5 percent rise this month. Retail gasoline typically lags behind changes in futures prices. The nationwide average pump price for regular gasoline fell 0.2 cents yesterday, according

AMERICA: DOE Inventory Report Slightly Bearish for Gasoline

The 1.528 million b/d total US gasoline imports and the 204,000 b/d week-over-week in Gulf Coast gasoline output should ease some supply concerns, as it shows refineries coming back
