New Saab 9-5 set for Geneva next March
    2008-05-24 07:45:00
Originally predicted to be shown at the Paris Motor Show in October of this year, the 2010 Saab 9-5 won't actually debut until the 2009 Geneva Motor Show in March of next year. While details of the new car are vague, we do know that it is based on GM's Epsilon II platform (unlike the new 9-3, now rumored to be downsized) and that the styling is expected to follow cues from the Saab Aero-X. Back in November 2006, we called the current Saab 9-5 an octogenarian. In today's current automotive industry, the 9-5 has reached centenarian status. The replacement can't come soon enough.[Source: Trollhattansaab]

Almost eighty years later, at the 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d'Élégance, representatives of Bugatti and Hermès met again. And this encounter turned out to be the beginning of a new collaboration between the two houses. The revival of this relationship may initially appear surprising, as the association between the renowned luxury house and the legendary car manufacturer in today's automotive context would not immediately spring to mind. It confirms that h

Wiesmann Plans MF4 and MF5 Cabriolet to debut in 2009 Geneva Motor Show
    2008-04-06 02:57:00
The eccentric German specialty marque Wiesmann has told GTSpirit.com during a factory visit that they plan to reveal roadster versions of their GT MF4 and GT MF5 cars at next year's Geneva Motor Show.Until then, the only Wiesmann roadster is their popular GT MF3. The MF3 Roadster is powered by BMW's 3.2 liter inline 6 engine putting 343 horses to the road. The Wiesmann GT MF4 takes power one step further with BMW's 4.8 liter V8 engine producing 367 hp while the new top-of-the-range Wiesmann GT MF5 is powered by BMW's 507 hp 5.0 liter V10 engine.Of course the introduction of the two more powerful Wiesmann roadsters will not effect the GT MF3 Roadster production. All three roadster will be produced side-by-side.Finally, some bad news for the US since Wiesmann cars will not be sold across the pond anytime in the near future. This is due to the bad exchange rate, and high costs of having Wiesmann cars tested, adjusted and approved for US roads.

Artega‘s GT Intro 2008 has come out in Geneva with a few special enhancements over its normal GT model these fittings are quite a number on the list, so we’ll touch on just a few. These include two distinct colours of Vanilla Yellow and Deep Sea Blue, the latter seen in these fine pictures.Artega has chosen to go classical with the Intro 2008 models, especially inside where things may appear basic, but are beneath the surface quite sophisticated.Forged lightweight wheels roll in Michelin tyres measuring 8“ x 19“ by the front side with 235/35 ZR 19 tyres and 10.5“ x 19“ at the back with 305/30 ZR 19 tyres.Driver assistance is standard with ABS, however, the traction control system will only kick in in the spring of 2009. Audi A4 DTM Sport Car on Geneva 2008
    2008-03-14 09:22:00
To make a championship winning car even better – the Audi Sport engineers and technicians faced this delicate task when the job of developing the DTM race version of the new Audi A4 arose. From the visual aspect they certainly succeeded: The new A4 DTM, which was publicly unveiled for the first time at the Motor Show in Geneva, spontaneously appears even more dynamic than the successful predecessor model with which Mattias Ekström won the DTM title last year. The fourth-generation Audi A4 DTM, which bears the project name "R14" internally at Audi Sport, is also futuristic from the technical aspect. With the help of state-of-the-art CFD calculations (Computational Fluid Dynamics) particular attention was paid to the air flow running around and through the car."In doing so we completed what we had already started last year with the R13," explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. "We are convinced that we have achieved the most logical optimisation of the aerodynamics allowed

Geneva 08: More on SsangYong’s hybrid system
    2008-03-11 07:13:32
Click for high-res galleryMost of our readers might not know SsangYong except that one of its models, the SUT, is used as the basis of the Phoenix Motorcars electric vehicles. Well, SsangYong has released more information about their new hybrid powertrain. During the Geneva Motor Show, the Korean marque didn't show a complete car but a model of the powertrain, which could be added to their current lineup of diesel engines (some of Mercedes origin). The pack meets the Euro IV norms and adds 30 kW (40 HP) to a standard diesel powertrain. The electric part of the powertrain uses a 340 V battery which is mated to a mild hybrid system that allows the engine to shut off at stops and supply power when accelerating. SsangYong announced that fuel savings will be around 25 percent, with a NOx reduction of 10 percent. When will all this be available? SsangYong said 2010.[Source: Autoblog en español]

And don't forget that when the catalytic converter fails and it's not replaced, emissions will increase fivefold.Blogging in Luxembourg. In engrish.

Geneva Motor Show 2008: production Ford Kuga
    2008-03-10 07:53:00
Kinetic design has been swallowing Ford of Europe's product range whole, and took a big bite at this year's Geneva Motor Show. Alongside the new Fiesta, Ford showed off the production version of the all-new Kuga crossover. Previewed by the concept unveiled at the last Frankfurt show and drawing on styling cues from the Iosis X show car, the Kuga is based on the same platform as the slicker Focus they get overseas.Although the Kuga is admittedly one more European model that Ford won't offer in its home market, we're not short of Ford crossovers to choose from over here, so we'll let the Europeans have this one. (Just give us the Focus RS and we'll be happy.) But to see what we're missing, check out our gallery of images from the Geneva show floor by clicking on the thumbnails below. Unfortunately, although we're sure the Kuga rolled off its turntable at night after we were gone and duked it out with the Renault Koleos for market share, we couldn't prove it.

Geneva Motor Show 2008: updated Alfa Romeo 159
    2008-03-10 07:47:00
We had plenty of reason to frequent the Alfa Romeo pavilion at this year's Geneva Motor show. After the unveiling of the production 8C Spider along with the updated Brera and Spider came the revisions to the 159 sedan and Sportwagon.Like its two-door counterparts, the changes to the 159 consist of a few small updates that don't interfere with the model's stunning lines. Better ergonomics and new electronics update the interior, while weight reduction where the car meets the road should help the car's driving dynamics slightly. Most importantly, however, the tweaks which Alfa Romeo announced for the 159 range gave us and our cameras another reason, as if we needed one, to get reacquainted with one of our favorite European sports sedans and wagons. Geneva Motor Show 2008: Ferrari One-to-One personalization program
    2008-03-10 07:45:00
Show-stopping new production cars and concepts were not lacking in Geneva this year. There were so many, in fact, that we struggled to take it all in. Yet while Ferrari didn't have any new models to show us, somehow we couldn't help but slow down in front of its booth as we rushed from press conference to press conference. Maybe it was the classic Daytona sitting next to the 612 Scaglietti bathed in soft light, or maybe the pair of lookers standing next to them. Guess we'll never know, but you can feast your eyes on all the sexy models in the gallery below. What Ferrari did unveil at the Swiss show, however, was a new customization program. Called One-to-One, the program takes the catalog of options under the existing Carrozzeria Scaglietti Programme a step further. A customization studio is being built at the factory in Maranello where clients can hand-pick a wide variety of options from leather swatches to brake calipers and everything in between. The program is being launched on the

    2008-03-09 23:37:00
This design is a progression of the Fioravanti Thalia design presented last year in Geneva, differing mostly in its rear aspect where it has a lower roof line. The overall theme is of a svelte coupesque estate with similar dimensions to the Pininfarina Sinseti also debuting in Geneva. In typical Fioravanti fashion, the car showcases a new functional design solution and has a delicate design language quite different to the zeitgeist of today.Designed by Matteo Fioravanti, the core motif of the de

Hyundai's HED-5 ‘i-Mode' six-seat MPV appears much larger in person and features certain polarizing features, which seem to mix three concepts into one. Convex and concave surfaces combine with a wedged side profile and a rounded front and rear, to give the appearance of a bow under pressure. But one of the most intriguing aspects are the negatively arching 'A and a half'-pillar and C-pillars, emphasized by almond shaped quarter-lights. Geneva Motor Show 2008: Renault Koleos clocks in for work
    2008-03-07 06:10:00
Renault pulled out all the stops for this year's Geneva Motor Show, taking the wraps off the swoopy Megane Coupe concept, as well as debuting the Twingo Renaultsport, Laguna GT and this, the Koleos crossover. Although closely based on mechanicals borrowed from sister-company Nissan, the Koleos is far more of a complete project than that other pair of French sport-utes from archrival PSA Peugeot-Citroen.The Koleos shared center stage with the Megane Coupe this week, outlining how important the new model is to Renault. This is its first proper foray into the sport-ute segment, finally surrendering when the French automaker realized the crossover craze would not be subsiding any time soon. When you can't beat 'em, join 'em, the saying goes, but push come to snooty shove, Renault actually appears to have done a decent job.

Toyota showed the Urban Cruiser concept at Geneva in 2006, but that time the car was clearly an SUV crossover. The new production Urban Cruiser debuting in Geneva this week has hints of SUV in its DNA, but is essentially a slightly tall and boxy small hatchback. This is because it is very closely based on the recently-announced Ist for the Japanese-market, a car identical to the US-market Scion Xd. The differences appear to be only in the front and rear bumpers which are black at their bases to

The Mila Alpin is a reinterpretation of that simple 4x4 vehicle and takes the idea for its styling and color scheme from the mountain rock and ice of the Alps. The car is split into two halves: the lower part is hard-edged and geometric and finished in rock gray. A low center of gravity was achieved by positioning the three-cylinder, 1000cc engine beneath one of the rear seats, hence the 3+1 seating arrangement. A CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) hybri

Geneva Show 2008 Highlights: 2009 Skoda Superb
    2008-03-06 08:22:00
This second-generation Superb is based on a mildly-lengthened VW Passat platform, with transverse rather than longitudinal engines as before. Walking around the car, there's a slight mixture of character together with odd reminders of several other cars. The front end is quite powerful and classy: the grille is sharper and more strongly defined than other Skodas, with a new six-sided grille outline, vertical grille bars and ends that wrap over into a new surface on either side, not unlike the ne

But this new Soul concept car in Geneva is a production preview concept car which closely follows the design theme of its predecessor namesake. The car is half way between a Kia C'eed and a Kia Sportage - a unique vehicle typology closest in concept to the Suzuki SX4 / Fiat Sedici and the Skoda Yeti concept from 2005(?). The Soul is reminiscent of the Skoda Roomster as well, in its rear three quarter aspect with its upright tailgat

Using a Toyota Hybrid Synergy drivetrain, the design clearly references the 1968 Bizzarinni Manta, one the first projects undertaken by Italdesign, which was also featured on the stand, freshly repainted in its wonderful original turquoise color. The continuous '1 line' profile is enhanced by a simple graphic treatment where the glass extends from nose to tail and features em

As a compact MPV, the Meriva will fit into the Opel range below the seven-seat Zafira. But it has grown approximately 200mm over its predecessor to compete with the five-seat junior MPVs in Europe, such as the Ford C-Max and the Citroen Picasso.Beyond the more substantial proportions of the car, one of the most significant design features is the ‘

    Geneva 2008: Toyota iQ

The finished version of Toyota’s new iQ city car has just been launched here at the Geneva motor show. And it's barely changed from the clever, cute concept that we were introduced to in Frankfurt last year. The iQ is the ‘world’s smallest four-seater car’, boasts its maker, measuring just 2985mm in length. To achieve such tight packaging, Toyota’s engineers have come up with a clever cabin system that allows three adults and one child to sit in comfort, despite the iQ’s diminutive, almost Smart car dimensions. They’ve also miniaturised components like the air conditioning; developed a flat under floor fuel tank; come up with a new differential that allows the iQ to have short front overhangs, and slimmed down the dashboard and seats. You can read in more detail about the iQ’s packaging on Hilton Holloway’s Geneva blog.Introducing the assembled global media to the iQ, Andrea Formica, Vice-President of Toyota Europe said it was the most “major milestone” in Toyota’

At 4800mm long, it is slightly shorter than a Mercedes-Benz E-class, but at 1280mm it is slightly lower than a Porsche 911. The reason for this is not simply that the Pininfarina design team love long low cars, but because the design is based on 'liquid packaging' - which essentially means that the core technical elements may be separated and positioned all over the car.The Sintesi ha

The bodywork from the front draws heavily from Spyker’s aero heritage as some of the intakes would not look out of place on an Airbus A320.Squint a little from the rear and you would be forgiven that you were looking at a TVR Tuscan, overall though it’s undeniably interesting.A wider track and a 10cm longer wheelbase gives the Spyker an almost square footprint. Making that footprint are immense 19-inch BF Goodrich tyres which are wrapped around turbine style (the aero heritage again) 10 spoke bladed alloys.Just hidden behind these alloys are substantial AP racing brakes which can be optioned up to Carbon/Ceramic specification. Geneva Motor Show 2008: Lotus adds Europa SE for 2008
    2008-03-05 08:08:00
As we reported earlier, Lotus has a new range of Europas for 2008, at least in their eponymous market. Still not coming to the States as far as we've heard, but with the "Eagle" already soaring, we think we can wait. Not that the Europa is a bad car, but the new model should be even better. Until the Eagle lands, however, the European market still has the perfectly adequate Europa and a new Europa SE. The Europa SE is here in Geneva and it has some spiffy new wheels, 17-inch in front, 18-inch out back. It's painted in a sort of monochrome fashion that makes us think of the '80s for some reason too. There's also a real (for Lotus at least) interior that is swathed in leather. The idea was to make it a bit more comfortable for the few people who are thinking of purchasing one. The car's 2.0L turbo four remains basically the same, but here it's tuned to 225 hp and 221 lb.-ft. of torque. Expect a 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds and a top end of 143. While the new entry level Europa will start at

2008 Geneva Motor Show: Land Rover LRX is back... in black
    2008-03-05 07:52:00
Segments keep blending and niches keep growing. We don't complain, though, when the results are as stunning as the LRX concept. Land Rover brought a second version of the show car to Geneva in a sharp new black-and-silver paintjob that would be our first choice for arriving at the Academy Awards if they were held on the moon. Hopefully the LRX is less pie-in-the-sky than that, though, because we want one. Or two.As sinisterly handsome as the carbon LRX looks from afar, the devil is in the details, which include such subtle modern touches as brushed-aluminum badging, grille, roof, vents and the like. And we like. Check out the images in the gallery below to see for yourself, and the details in our previous post.

Geneva 2008: Lancia unveils new Delta

With Maserati returning to profitability, Alfa Romeo continuously unveiling the most masterful of automotive creations, Ferrari back to winning world championships, Fiat rising like a phoenix from the proverbial ashes, and even Abarth coming into its own, Lancia remains the last member of the Fiat family in need of rejuvenation. But the quirky auto marque took a giant leap today in Geneva with the unveiling of the new Delta. Based on a modified Fiat Bravo platform and previewed by the Delta HPE concept of Paris 2006, the new Lancia Delta wasn’t just the focus of Lancia’s presence at the closest major auto show to its home market, it was all they brought. And they brought five of ‘em, making a dramatic, (literally) fully orchestrated debut on the Geneva show floor. Lotus Exige 270E TriFuel at Geneva Motor Show
    2008-03-02 14:38:00
Interesting times indeed for the world that even a purist automaker like Lotus is getting ready to mesmerise mother nature as it reveals the Exige 270E Tri-fuel. Tri-fuel runs on methanol, bioethanol and petrol/gasoline. It has a top Vbox reading of 255km/h, having dispatched the 0 - 100km/h time in 3.88 seconds. Both methanol and bioethanol contain a significant amount of pure alcohol, which basically means the more your car can drink, the better life will be for the environment. Lotus is betting that this happens, particularly in sync with widespread availability of the fuels worldwide. This is the part that might hamper the Lotus Exige 270E Tri-fuel’s progress. The Lotus Exige 270E Tri-fuel dons a 1.8-litre engine which, with the help of a mechanical blower (aka supercharger), dispenses 270 bhp – hence the name – or 201kW at 8000rpm and 260Nm, making it the most potent road Lotus out there. Lotus will unveil the covers off a 270E Tri-fuel at Geneva in the next couple of days.Pre

2008 Geneva Motor Show: Morgan LIFECar Concept
    2008-03-02 03:19:00
Morgan's heavily-hyped hyrdogen fuel cell prototype renderings and details had been revealed several weeks before, and now, just one weeks ahead of the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, Morgan is sharpening things up in anticipation of its LIFECar conept.Hydrogen gas powers a four-stack PEM fuel cell made by QinetiQ that generates 22kW of electricity, emitting only water and heat, which means zero tailpipe emissions. Of course that neglects the emissions in producing the hydrogen, but that’s beside the point. The QinetiQ fuel cell operates at 45% efficiency, which represents a substantial advance over the efficiency of combustion engine technology where much more of the energy is wasted as heat. The electric power is delivered to the wheels via four independent motors that are also capable of regenerative braking. Unlike current systems which recapture only about 10% of the kinetic energy through regenerative braking, Morgan claims the LIFECar’s four motors enable it to recover nearly 50% of t

Geneva Motor Show 2008 Preview: Mercedes Vision GLK BlueTec Diesel Hybrid concept gets 40mpg
    2008-03-01 09:15:30
When Mercedes-Benz premiered the new GLK compact SUV at the Detroit Auto Show in January, the styling struck most people as at best awkward. With the outward appearance of the full-size GL shrunk down to an Escape-sized vehicle, it still looks like a reject for a Chrysler Sebring crossover. Regardless of what you think [...]

Geneva Motor Show 2008: Italdesign Giugiaro Quaranta finally revealed in full
    2008-03-01 08:56:00
Italdesign Giugiaro has been releasing teaser images of its Quaranta concept at an agonizingly slow pace for weeks now, but has finally dropped all its got on the car just days before it will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. The Quaranta is actually inspired by the 1968 Bizzarrini Manta concept, and the two take the wedge shape to an extreme. The Quaranta's claim to fame is that it houses a mid-mounted hybrid powertrain supplied by a Toyota. The 3.3L V6 combined with Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive produces a combined 268 horsepower and 212 pound feet of torque, which Italdesign claims is good for a 4.05 second run to 62 mph in the lightweight and perfectly balanced Quaranta. At the same time, its pair of fuel tanks integrated into the frame can hold nearly 16 gallons of fuel, good for a 621-mile range. The entire opaque roof is also comprised of solar panels, which run the interior electronics and charge the batteries. The concept can employ two- or all-wheel-drive depending on the

Geneva Leakage: Remaining 2009 VW Scirocco pics surface
    2008-03-01 08:55:00
As we say in the biz, you can't put the toothpaste back in the tube, so you might as well squeeze out what's left. After two official images of the yet-to-debut 2009 Volkswagen Scirocco hit the web the other day, a couple of sites have decided just to publish the whole lot of pre-release images. There are seven in total now (VW will likely release dozens more after the car debuts in Geneva next week), including a pair of interior pics that show, surprise, surprise, a cockpit that appears remarkably similar to the one in the Golf and Jetta. Despite that, the deeply bolstered tan leather seats are stitched with a nifty retro pattern that makes us want to crank the cassette player to 11. There's more info about the 2009 Volkswagen Scirocco that we'd like to tell you, but it's embargoed until Monday. It's highly unlikely, however, that this tube of toothpaste won't be squeezed dry by then.
