This little widget allows for a nice bridge into writing for the broadest audience possible. In my infinite curiosity, I went and had this blog analyzed.Is this really a bad thing? Blog author Melissa Donovan seems to think so: Writers who use big words and fancy phrases will not reach the broadest audience possible, and in fact, will turn many potential readers away. Who wants to expend a whole lot of energy to decipher a short story or understand a blog post? When a writer tries to come off as brilliant by using complex language, the effort usually outshines the material.Personally I'm not so sure it's a bad thing to exhibit my intelligence. I wouldn't say that I write in a manner that excludes people... I'm pretty sure that anyone I know could chime in and join the conversation. And I don't know many geniuses. So what is it about a post that makes the reading a genius level read? I'm very curious what standards this particular website is using on making that assessment.Thoughts? As I understand it, La Russa thinks it creates more scoring opportunities for the guys at the top of the lineup. The pitcher has to bat somewhere, though, and now there are just fewer scoring opportunities for the guy now batting ninth, as well as more plate appearances for the worst hitter on the team. You can stretch your brain any which way trying to come up with convoluted justifications for this move, but ultimately, it can't possibly help. Rick Hummel is willing to give ol' Tony the benefit of the doubt, however, proclaiming that La Russa's new maneuver is "a hit." It's not, and I'm here to tell you why.But this year, after some initial national (and some local) snickering that La Russa was "overmanaging," the method seems to have gained at least tacit acceptance. The results bear out La Russa's logic.The tacitness shouldn't automatically be taken for acceptance; maybe people just got tired of arguing with La Russa and his ridiculous stubbornness. It makes sense. At first people snickered and said he overmanaged, but he's been doing it for 48 games now, and you can only complain about something for so long before you just give up in despair.Before Sunday's game, the Cardinals had a slightly better record with the pitcher hitting eighth at 22-26, compared to 50-56 before that. They had scored 4.69 runs a game, compared to 4.34 before that.Nothing like a gross misuse of statistics to brighten my day. The difference in the record amounts to no more than a couple games, and with such small sample sizes you can't possibly assume that the difference is proof of La Russa's strategy at work. A more likely explanation (which includes the runs/game difference) is that Rick "HGH" Ankiel has been playing out of his mind and boosting the offense.Both Aaron Miles and Brendan Ryan, who have hit ninth most of the time, have batted over .300 as ninth-place hitters this season, with Miles at .350 and Ryan at .301. More gross statistic misuse. Ryan has hit .302 for the entire season, so it's not as if he's doing any better in the ninth spot. Miles is indeed hitting .350 in his mere 66 ABs as a ninth hitter. He's also hitting .366 in 41 ABs as a second hitter, and 1.000 in 1 AB batting fifth!Since Aug. 4, the first game of the pitcher hitting eighth, Cardinals starting pitchers are six for 17 (.353) with six RBIs with men in scoring position. Joel Pineiro has been terrible, but Adam Wainwright and Braden Looper have been productive.Now the contention seems to be that, by hitting the pitcher 8th, La Russa has rendered the pitchers themselves more productive, and that they may, in fact, collectively win a batting title. Such is the power of changing the lineup in a very minute way.Want my opinion instead? 17 at-bats is way too small a sample size for me to give a crap about. And if you thought that was a small sample, try analyzing each individual pitcher's batting totals in that tiny sample. Pineiro has apparently been "terrible" in his at bats (as a pitcher) since August 4th while hitting eighth and with runners in scoring position. How many at bats does that include? Two? Three, maybe?We'll let the brain behind the master plan close this out with a rambling, incoherent statement."If you really want to be serious about it, you've got to look at the potential, rather than at the actual, unless you figure in that the players were insulted by hitting ninth, which I don't think they are.""Look at the potential rather than the actual." Ignoring the fact that, well, this doesn't make sense, I'd still rather look at the "actual" results.Hey, I have a new idea with loads of "potential."
