Giants Come to Terms with First-Round Pick Safety Kenny Phillips
    2008-07-22 17:28:16
The Giants moved Jeremy Shockey Monday, and today made a minor headline as reports say they have come to terms with first round pick safety Kenny Phillips. The rookie could be a starter right away, as the team needs help in the secondary with the departure via free agency of Gibril Wilson, who left [...]

Giants will have to prove that they weren't a fluke
    2008-07-17 05:00:07
Lack of respect for the DEFENDING SUPER BOWL CHAMPION New York Giants has seemed like a constant theme this off-season. We discussed it Wednesday in regards to Eli Manning. We discussed it way back in March when Yahoo! Sports dissed the Giants in a pre-season ranking. Now, it seems, we have to discuss it again. This time it's ESPN's John Clayton piling on the Giants. Answering a mailbag question, here is what Clayton had to say. Their Super Bowl run was unpredictable and special, but it will be hard to repeat. They enter camp projected behind a Cowboys team with 13 Pro Bowl starters, while the Eagles and Redskins are dangerous sleepers. Face it, it's hard playing in a division that doesn't have a losing team and arguably has four playoff contenders. Whether they make the playoffs as a division-winner or a wild card, the Giants proved the team that survives the NFC East the best can go to the Super Bowl. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the Giants don't make the playoffs this year

Giants and RB Brandon Jacobs Still Far Apart on an Extension
    2008-07-16 09:14:38
According to today’s New York Daily News, the Giants and Brandon Jacobs still appear to be far apart on a contract extension, and it looks as if a deal will not get done by the opening of training camp on July 24th. The paper says that the two sides have been talking, but “nothing is [...]

    Giants News and Notes
    2008-07-15 21:35:33
The New York Giants have signed third-round pick Mario Manningham. According to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, the Michigan wide receiver signed a four-year deal. That leaves only the top two picks, first-rounder Kenny Phillips and second-rounder Terrell Thomas, as unsigned draft choices. With training camp beginning in a little more than a week, that is good news. BRADSHAW FREE: Running back Ahmad Bradshaw has completed his 30-day stay in a Virginia jail for an apparent parole violation. The question now is whether or not Bradshaw will face a suspension from the NFL. I hope that doesn't happen, but it's impossible to speculate on. The real details of Bradshaw's incarceration aren't clear, so it's really impossible to know how the league will handle it.

A look at the Giants' safeties
    2008-07-15 06:00:06
Let's look at the safety position today as we continue our look at some of the most interesting position battles we are likely to see this summer when training camp opens for the Giants in Albany later this month. I am going to do this a little differently today. I will go player-by-player, then make some predictions. James Butler -- Butler is entering his fourth season, and last year was his first as the starting strong safety. He had 69 tackles and just one interception last year. The Giants might move him to free safety this season. He's decent, but nothing special. Really, he seems like an adequate guy just holding a place until someone better comes along. That might happen this season. Sammy Knight -- The 12-year veteran was signed as a free agent to replace Gibril Wilson, who bolted for big money in Oakland. Knight is a strong safety, which means Butler may have to move to the other side. Knight started 15 games last season and had 79 tackles and four interceptions. He can stil

    Giants have depth at corner
    2008-07-14 06:00:07
Training camp is approaching, and it's time to begin getting serious about what our DEFENDING SUPER BOWL CHAMPION Giants will look like this season. Today, I will begin a look at some of the more interesting position battles that will be worth watching in Albany this summer. Let's start at cornerback, where there figures to be a ton of competition for both roster spots and playing time. The Locks The way I see it, Sam Madison, Aaron Ross, Corey Webster, Terrell Thomas and Kevin Dockery are locks to make the squad. The real battle here will be who plays, and how much. If Webster's outstanding post-season performance wasn't a mirage and he truly has become a top-flight corner, I see Webster and Ross taking the starting spots with Madison as third corner. Ross, last year's No. 1 pick improved as the year went on and showed the size, speed and toughness to make me think he can be a quality corner for a long time. If Webster continues his good play and Madison still has something in the ta

Sunday Game Thread: Giants at Cubs 1:20 CT/2:20 ET
    2008-07-13 12:42:41
Meet the 8th Cub All-Star: No, I'm not kidding. The Cubs announced this morning that Kerry Wood will not be available to play in the All-Star Game because of a friction blister. NL Manager Clint Hurdle, who apparently stopped watching the Cubs about a month ago, then announced that Carlos Marmol will replace Kerry on the NL All-Star squad. I'm serious. Okay, so based on what he did from April to mid-May, he probably does deserve to go. But as most of us are acutely aware, Carlos has had. .  . issues. .  .as of late. Whether you think he's been struggling because of a possible injury or mechanical problems, because of a lack of confidence, or because he's been the victim of bad luck and a couple of bad pitches here and there, there's little doubt that the July Carlos Marmol is not the same pitcher we saw earlier in the season. So Clint Hurdle, if you're out there, I say the following: Hey Clint, I know that your team doesn't have a snowball's chance of making the playoffs th

Coverage - TV: WGN - Radio: 720 WGN, XM Radio Channel 189 Location - Wrigley Field, Chicago Ryan Dempster (10-3, 3.13/1.16) vs. Tim Lincecum (10-2, 2.66/1.27) Lou Piniella's crew will try to finish the first half of the season with a series sweep of the Giants today behind Ryan Dempster. Here are the facts....the Cubs own the best record in all of baseball and the biggest lead of all the other divisional leaders. It figures to be a wild second half of the season on the North Side of Chicago and the Cubs have a long way to go to reach their goal. The Cardinals and Brewers will be in the race for the remainder of the season and until the Reds, Pirates and Astros decide to be sellers they will continue to make the Central Division of the National League the strongest in the Senor Circuit. The Cubs offense will have the tough task of scoring runs today against Tim Lincecum. Lou Piniella said, once again following

Saturday Love Thread: Rich Harden to Lead Cubs Against Giants: 12:05 CT/1:05 ET
    2008-07-12 11:00:00
Hello, Love Today is the big day. Now that Gallagher allowed two hits in 7 innings yesterday and Murton, of all people, drove in two runs, it's time for Rich Harden and his allegedly dead arm to step up and make us all feel fan-freakin-tastic about this trade. I can't help but feel that this year is Bizzaro Cubs Year 2008. The Cubs, who have never been known for patience at the plate, lead the NL in OBP. And aren't we usually complaining about our pitching at this time of year? Instead, we have arguably the best rotation (on paper, anyway) in the NL, if not in all of baseball. And when the perennial clamoring for another strong starter began in earnest, Hendry went out and got not Steve Trachsel or Glendon Rusch, but RICH HARDEN. Fire up your generators and load up on your potted meat, because the apocalypse is at hand. Until then, though, let's all enjoy the ride. Lucky for us, today's game is on FOX, which means we all can hold hands, huddle together, and prepare to be impressed.Ha

Wrigley Field will be full of energy today when Rich Harden takes the mound and hopefully the very talented right-hander will be able to harness the excitement and notch his first win at the Friendly Confines. Lou Piniella mentioned before Friday's game that Geovany Soto would likely receive Saturday off, so look for Henry Blanco behind the plate. Also, the Cubs have decided to stick with a 13-man pitching staff throughout the weekend and will not make a roster move until after the All-Star break. 2008-07-11 11:00:00
Today, the Rich-Harden-Possessing Chicago Cubs take on the Rich-Harden-less San Francisco Giants.  But even though thoughts are on tomorrow's big start for the New Guy, you have to eat your meat if you want to have your pudding tomorrow. I know you're upset about Jason Marquis pitching today, but you don't need to make that face. The Pitchers Yes, Jason Marquis gets the start for the Chicago Cubs.  Marquis is 1-2 in his last three games, and has an ERA of, umm, 7.00, in those starts.  The law of averages says he's gotta do better than that today! Jason Marquis is a Law-Breaker Marquis is a Leo, and his horoscope is: You'll fail to find happiness at the bottom of a bottle this week, but by that point you'll be too drunk to really care. For the Giants, it'll be righty Matt Cain.  The 23-year-old Cain has 112 strikeouts in 119.1 innings pitched this year- that's very good.  The Giants might be a great team in a few years if they keep Lincecum and Cain and then

    Giants add veteran OT
    2008-07-11 06:00:08
In one of those under-the-radar moves GM Jerry Reese has become known for, the Giants added some depth to their offensive line Thursday. Four-year veteran starter Shane Olivea has agreed to a deal with the Giants. I know nothing about Olivea, but this sounds like it might be a coup for the Giants. Here is the New York Post's Paul Schwartz on the move. Olivea was a starting right tackle for the Chargers for four years but was released last February. The NFL hit him with a four-game suspension (to be served at the start of this season) for violating the league's Substance Abuse Policy but yesterday that suspension was rescinded because of what his agent, Kenny Zuckerman, called "a clerical issue.'' That cleared the way for the Giants to reel Olivea in. The 6-4, 312-pound offensive lineman was originally a seventh-round draft pick out of Ohio State. He was born in Cedarhurst and played at Lawrence High School. After starting 57 of 60 games for the Chargers, Olivea adds considerable depth

    Vote for all-time Giants RBs
    2008-07-06 06:00:05
The vote to determine whether or not we should grant Tiki Barber an automatic spot on our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team is split almost 50-50. With that in mind, I can't just give him a spot. So, Tiki will have to rely on Big Blue View Nation to vote him in. Here are your nominees for the two running back slots. Tiki Barber -- We all know the numbers. He's the Giants all-time leading rusher (10,449 yards), second-leading receiver of all-time (586 catches), is only the third player in NFL history to have 10,000 yards rushing and 5,000 yards receiving, had six 1,000-yard rushing seasons. He is the best running back in Giants history, and should go to the Hall of Fame. What I will be interested to see is, considering that his mouth has turned him into such a hated figure can Big Blue View Nation stomach voting for him? Frank Gifford -- Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1977, Gifford had 3,609 yards rushing and 5,434 yards receiving in his career. He was named to eight Pro Bowls and was

After tonight's game, the Cubs will have played as many games at home 43 (33-10) as on the road 43 (18-24). Lou Piniella's crew must improve their performance away from the Friendly Confines and will try to post back-to-back road victories since the Toronto series. Game Thread; Cubs at Giants, 7:05 p.m. EDT/6:05 CT: Happy Early 4th
    2008-07-03 16:00:00
Hi. I'm good at this closing thing. This is going to be short, because I'm currently on a great start of a four-day weekend. If the Cubs win this game, it's going to be a steal. Why? Because Tim Lincecum is pitching. Lincecum is a top up-and-coming pitcher on a crappy team. He's lost only once this season and leads the leagues in strikeouts. So, yeah, he's OK. The Cubs will counter with Sean Gallagher. Maybe he'll throw a complete game two-hitter, so as to prevent Lou from coming back out to the pitcher's mound and tearing him a new one. Winning today won't be impossible, but it'll be tough. However, new papa A-Ram is expected to be back, along with secret weapon Reed Johnson. A win here would be a huge boost for this weekend's showdown with St. Louis. The game once again is on Comcast (dammit), and lineups will be along in a while from someone who can actually watch the game. Everyone have a safe and great holiday.

Yep, it's gonna be another long evening. Well, it is for you lucky ducks that get Comcast. I'll be somewhere looking at the ticker (the one bar near me that gets MLB Extra Innings is pretty dead during the week). But kudos to all that have been staying up, pretty good to see the comments hit the 200+ mark in the last couple nights, hasn't been that way in a while. Keep it up, night owls!! After splitting the first two games, the Cubs look to regain the advantage. They'll be facing Kevin Correia, who has just one win this season, and that came back in April. He was hurt, though, and has actually done OK in his last few starts, so this isn't another Barry Zito, necessarily. The Cubs will send out Ryan Dempster, who was brought back to Earth from all that All-Star/Cy Young talk after giving up eight runs Friday against the White Sox in just 2.1 innings. It was not pretty. SuperDemp hopefully isn't too hungover from heavy partying celebrating yesterday's Canada Day. Those crazy Canadian

The Cubs are 1-4 thus far with a less than whole roster. A win tonight would be a must in order to have a chance to spend Monday's off day having completed at least a .500 road trip. The Cubs will receive a boost with the return of both Aramis Ramirez and Reed Johnson on Thursday. Tonight it will be up to Ryan Dempster to bounce back from his last start and to the offense to score early and often off of Kevin Correia....

Never been there, but I've heard its nice I don’t know about everyone one else, but after witnessing this weekends dismal display of pitching and less than stellar offense it was nice to see the team rebound on both fronts last night.   So the losing streak was at least interrupted and tonight they try for a new streak, hopefully one in the W column.  Of course the Cubs are without Aramis, who is still home for "family matters" (which I believe is because his wife is having a kid, but nobody seems to be printing that), Soriano is still out, D Lee is still a double play machine, and left field has been manned by a combination of Carrot Top and Eric Patterson's impersonation of an outfielder. But fear not, we still got DeRo! (for the record, that last part wasn't sarcasm) Jason Marquis (6-4, 4.96 ERA) is pitching for the boys in blue tonight.  He got a little roughed up by Baltimore last week, but what can you do.  I'm hoping for a strong rebound tonight

Prisco slights Giants, but who cares?
    2008-07-01 06:00:52
Pete Prisco of CBS Sportsline is out with his annual list of the players he considers to be the top 50 in the NFL. There is only one Giant on Prisco's list -- Osi Umenyiora at No. 42. I really intended to rip Prisco for having only one member of the DEFENDING SUPER BOWL champions on his list. The more I look at it, though, I find myself unable to get really worked up about the indignity of it all. I guess a SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP can make you kind of immune to some self-proclaimed expert's list of players he thinks are the best. Having a handful of superstars doesn't win you a championship. It takes 53 contributing players, sometimes more, and a coaching staff that is on the same page with its players. That is what makes lists like this so unimportant. Really, just something to talk about on a July day without football. Sure, it would have been nice to see a little love thrown to Plaxico Burress, Eli Manning or Chris Snee. Sure, it annoys me a little that there are more members of the

So let me get this straight: Soriano is out, Z is out, Edmonds has an old person's foot, Theriot's hand hurts, Johnson is on the DL, and Ramirez has to go to the Dominican Republic for three days to deal with family issues. This should make for an interesting lineup. Still, we have a better chance at winning tonight than we have in the last few games. Why, you ask? Because tonight we're facing Barry Zito. Zito only got his third win of the season on June 25. He's got a 7.34 ERA at home and has barely made it out of the 5th most starts this season. He leads the NL in losses and is 5th in the league in base on balls. Translation: even the hapless Ronny Cedeno should be able to hit this guy. Which reminds me: Jim Hendry, I've disagreed with a lot of your moves over the years, but one move I do not disagree with is your failure to sign Barry Zito. Well done. The Men Who Made Them Giants
    2008-06-22 06:00:43
In conjunction with the vote for the All-time Giants head coach, we thought you might enjoy a synopsis of every head coach the Giants have ever had. So let’s get right to it. Bob Folwell (1925): Folwell came to the New York Football Giants following a successful coaching stint at Navy. He led the Giants to an 8-4 record in their first year in the league, and then left to take over as head coach of the Philadelphia Quakers of the original American Football League. Joe Alexander (1926):  Alexander was an All-Star player for the Giants from 1925-1927, and in 1926 he also served as head coach. Also a practicing medical doctor, Alexander was one of the few Giants to receive a yearly salary. He relinquished the position of head coach for his final season in 1927. Alexander is also a member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. Earl Potteiger (1927-28): Potteiger took over as player-coach of the Giants in 1927, and led them to their first NFL Championship. The Giant

Pope was a practice squad guy last season until injuries forced him into action in the playoffs. He's intriguing because of his blazing speed, but we may never know if he could be a player. Right now the Giants have 86 players, and they can only bring 80 to training camp. Pope may have just made one of those decisions a whole lot easier. The way things have been going, the Giants have enough problems right now without keeping around a marginal player who is in trouble with the law.

Burress Refuses to Practice at Giants Camp; Demanding New Deal

Surfing the Giants on a Monday
    2008-06-09 09:49:36
Here are some Giants-related stories to get you through a very hot Monday Mark Bowden, author of Black Hawk Down, has written a new novel all about The Greatest Game Ever Played. Giants GM Jerry Reese endorses a football camp for kids run by his head coach at The University of Tennessee at Martin. The Buffalo News has a breakdown and list of questions facing each team in the NFC East. Ed's got me running all over the country looking for Giants news. As Lloyd Lindsay Young would say "Helllooooooooooooooo Fargo, North Dakota!!!"  The Fargo In-Forum has a story about "former" Giants safety Craig Dahl, who is hoping for another shot with the Giants. Finally, Clark Judge of CBS Sportsline can't figure out why the Giants are getting so little respect.

    Giants In The News
    2008-06-02 09:43:16
Here are a couple of Giants-related stories found in some of the players hometown sites: Ahmad Bradshaw had his high school jersey retired in an emotional ceremony. After all the chaos of a Super Bowl victory, Brandon Jacobs is looking for a slower pace of life, and he may find it in Huntsville, Alabama. Chris Snee hosted a Punt, Pass, and Kick Contest in his hometown, and he brought along a buddy from the offensive line to help. Justin Tuck is helping kids in his hometown learn the joy of reading. With all the negativity surrounding the NFL these days, it's great to see some positive articles surrounding our Super Bowl Champion New York Giants (that never gets old). Thanks to the Bluefield Telegraph, Huntsville Times via al.com, WBNG-12 Binghamton, and The Earth Times for supplying these stories.

Well, NFL Total Access is airing a special about Gadsen, a veteran who lost both legs, and the Giants tonight at 7 p.m. If you have it, check it out. Gregg, Uggla Highlight DH Sweep of Giants
    2008-05-25 20:11:00
Maybe the Marlins should be in the NL West? After all, the first place Fish sweep the vaunted Diamondbacks before winning 2 of 3 at home vs the lowly Giants.Things didn't look good in either game, but the Marlins rallied in both to come out on top 8-6 and 5-4. The opening game of the doubleheader featured 4 home runs by the Florida lineup and a clutch save by closer Kevin Gregg, who has been solid all season.Gregg appeared later in the doubleheader, keeping a 4-4 tied heading into the bottom of the 9th before eventually picking up the win. His contributions have been key to the Marlins' success this season. It's amazing how Florida always seems to milk saves out of their closers, even when they are nobodies. From Armando Benitez, Urbina, Borowski, Todd Jones, all of these guys are hardly Mariano Rivera's. They still seem to produce career years in the closer role for the Marlins though. However, the hero of the day was Dan Uggla, who hit his Marlins record 12th home run of the month in

    The Evolution of Giants Receiving
    2008-05-22 22:45:34
Hi. My name is TerraByte and I’m a numberholic. I analyze business data all day at work and then come home and analyze data from sports, politics, and anything else I can get my hands on. I’ve tried to cut back, but ETVal’s post on Jeremy Shockey sent me off on this bender. I’ve always thought of the Giants as a running team. There was Little Joe, Rodney, Tiki, Ottis. Three yards and a cloud of dust. But all that has changed. Now we talk about Eli, Plaxico, Amani, and Jeremy. What happened? I believe the transition was the result of changes in coaching philosophy, the acquisition of more talented backup players, and the emergence of stars. Consider this graph of data on Giants receiving between the 1990 and 2007 seasons. To put the data into perspective, summaries of the coach, the team record, the percentage of plays that were passes, the QB with the most attempts, the overall pass completion rate, the number of passing TDs, and the receivers who accounted f

Football Outsiders gives Giants offensive line a little love
    2008-05-19 06:00:01
Football Outsiders recently reviewed the drafts and remaining needs of each team in the NFC East in a regular segment it calls 'Four Downs.' Within FO's recap is some interesting statistical data about the Giants offensive line, an underappreciated unit that was one of the best in the league in 2007. FO summarized the situation with the Giants offensive line this way: Back in the fall of 2007, it seemed very likely that the New York Giants would need to draft an offensive lineman in the 2008 draft, perhaps even in the first round. Former starting left tackle Luke Petitgout had just left for Tampa Bay, and his backup, Bob Whitfield, had retired. These departures gave David Diehl, formerly a guard, and Rich Seubert, formerly a backup, the chance to start at left tackle and left guard, respectively. Fans hoped for the best, but it wouldn’t have been too surprising to see Diehl move back to guard by now, forcing the Giants to draft a lineman high or dip into the free agency pool.

Giants getting ready to say goodbye to Strahan?
    2008-05-16 06:00:32
No one in a position of authority with the New York Giants is going to say it, but from here it seems pretty obvious the team is preparing for life after Michael Strahan. How else do you explain the drafting of Robert Henderson, who would seem to have no shot to make the team if Strahan is in uniform? The drafting of two linebackers who would seem to make it OK to move Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end if the need arose? The fact that veteran defensive end Renaldo Wynn, who played for Tom Coughlin in Jacksonville, visited yesterday and could sign with the team soon? Strahan is, arguably, the second-best defensive player in Giants' history behind Lawrence Taylor. I have been hoping, and will continue to hope, that he returns for a 16th season. The way he played last year, with 9 regular-season sacks, you know he still has the ability. Strahan was coy Wednesday night when asked -- again -- whether he plans to play this season. "I'll be honest with you, I pretty much know what I

Some Giants News On a Tuesday Night
    2008-05-06 19:57:07
Giants Extend David Diehl's Contract In a classy move for a classy guy, the Giants have handed David Diehl a six-year, $31-million contract extension less than three years after his last one. Diehl's agent, Peter Schaffer, confirmed the extension, which was first reported by ESPN. "It's a recognition by the Giants of David's commitment to the team, his attitude and his personality," Schaffer said. "He's the ultimate team player." That's true. Diehl has started all 80 regular-season games and six postseason games since he was drafted by the Giants in 2005. He's played through all kinds of pain and everywhere on the offensive line except center -- right guard in 2003, right tackle in '04, left guard in '05 and '06 and left tackle last season after the team cut Luke Petitgout. No matter what the team has asked of him, Diehl has done it. And he's now played the most important position on the line for a Super Bowl winner. Schaffer wouldn't discuss the financials of the deal, which was f

King: Cowboys rank ahead of Giants right now
    2008-05-06 10:00:06
Peter King came out with his off-season team rankings yesterday in his weekly 'Monday Morning Quarterback ' column. He placed the defending Super Bowl champion Giants sixth on his list behind New England, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Dallas (ugh!!) and San Diego. The only one on the list that really bugs me is Dallas. Talent-wise, I get it. The Cowboys haven't proven they can win when it counts, though. The Giants, obviously, have. Here is what King said about your defending champions. This is a team that caught fire at the right time and rode the wave to a title. Was it the best team in football in 2007? For the last two games of the year, yes. For the rest of the season, not even close. But the last two games of the season are the biggest. Funny how a season progresses: In Weeks 9-14, the Giants went 3-3, losing three times by double digits and winning by six, five and three points. Then, ka-boom. Moving forward, the Giants will be fortunate if Michael Strahan plays. I think he'll

How the Giants new LBs stack up
    2008-05-01 12:00:05
The Giants added two linebackers in the draft, Bryan Kehl in the fourth round and Jonathan Goff in the fifth. Here is some information about them. I am intrigued by Kehl since GM Jerry Reese found it necessary to trade up for him in the fourth round, giving up one of his extra sixth-round picks. From NFL Draft Countdown: A pretty good all-around player whose physical tools are passable and gets pushed over the top by doing all the little things...Probably not starting material but can make a roster & contribute..Backup / Special Teamer. The Giants also drafted middle linebacker Jonathan Goff, from Vanderbilt, in the fifth round. Here is what Footballs Future had to say about Goff. Goff is a physical, run stuffing force at middle linebacker. He quickly diagnoses the run, and attacks the line of scrimmage. He will take on blockers and battle until he gets to the ball carrier. Goff has the ability to make plays up and down the line of scrimmage, as long as the play is in front o

Giants get an 'A' -- for 2005 draft
    2008-04-30 11:54:59
I always get a chuckle out of the ridiculous rush by NFL analysts like Mel Kiper and others to grade drafts. You see those ratings almost as soon as the picks are in, and it's nothing short of stupid. There is no way you can really judge a draft until you get the players on the field and see how they perform. Well, I have finally come across a set of draft grades I can put some stock in -- for the 2005 season. Associated Press football writer Dave Goldberg has gone back and looked at the 2005 draft , and concluded that the Giants, Chargers and Cowboys are the only teams who deserved 'A' grades for what they did that year. Goldberg's reasoning is as follows: Drafts can’t be rated with grades the day after the draft although fans seem to consider them must reading. But NFL personnel consider three years the period needed to determine who can play and who can’t. So 2005 grades are the ones given this year. Here is what he said about the Giants '05 draft. San Diego (13-

Kiper not fond of Giants' draft
    2008-04-28 15:21:48
Personally, I don't care what Mel Kiper has to say about the Giants' draft. But, for those of you who put stock in Kiper's opinion, here is what he said about the Giants. I understand taking safety Kenny Phillips with the last pick in the first round. He had a great sophomore season in 2006. Terrell Thomas could be a No. 2 cornerback, but I thought that pick was just OK. Wide receiver Mario Manningham is worth a role of the dice in the third round because he has talent, but his stock dropped in the months leading up to the draft, with some teams viewing him as a late-round pick. Jonathan Goff was a good find in the fifth round, and the same can be said about Andre' Woodson in Round 6. Defensive end Robert Henderson is just a marginal prospect. Grade: C+ Like I said, I could care less.I used this link before, but I have to do it again. When it comes to Kiper, this is more like it.

Shockey to bring Giants a starting safety?
    2008-04-22 07:27:44
Ernie Palladino of the Journal News is reporting that the Jeremy Shockey to the Saints talks are gaining traction, and that the key player coming back to the Giants is starting safety Roman Harper. Harper started all 16 games for New Orleans last season, his second in the league. He had 90 tackles, four sacks and three interceptions. If that deal does go through the Giants will, obviously, be looking somewhere other than safety for their first-round selection. More Good Stuff to Read Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News ranks the Giants draft needs. The Blue Screen A linebacker would be a good fit as the top pick. Newsday Like I have been saying, here's more speculation that the Giants are targeting Miami safety Kenny Phillips. Safety first for the Giants?
    2008-04-21 14:53:01
One position we have all acknowledged feeling the Giants need to upgrade is safety. Veteran Sammy Knight, signed to replace Gibril Wilson and James Butler are no better than adequate. Second-year man Michael Johnson is exciting, but still unproven. This position needs attention, and I don't think anyone can be surprised if a Day 1 choice is used to upgrade it. Let's look some of the possibilities. Since I do have an ESPN Insider account, I will use NFL Draft Countdown for player bios. Kenny Phillips, Miami This is the guy many mock drafts have the Giants taking. If he is still there at No. 31, this is the guy I want. NFL Draft Countdown (First rounder) The next in a long line of top Hurricane safeties, following in the footsteps of guys like Bennie Blades, Ed Reed, Sean Taylor and Brandon Meriweather ... could rank amongst the Top 10 safeties in the NFL relatively early on in his career. Reggie Smith, Oklahoma An intriguing guy who could also project as a cornerbac

Strahan an easy choice for BBV All-Time Giants' Team
    2008-04-10 18:35:14
It is time to turn our attention to the defensive tackles on our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team. Before I do that, though, we have to clarify the defensive end position. Due to an error on my part, I believe our voting results on the defensive end position are inconclusive. Michael Strahan obviously belongs on the all-time team, and gets one defensive end slot. The other position, I believe, has yet to be decided. Andy Robustelli has a slight edge over Leonard Marshall right now. However, I want to re-vote the second defensive end using just those two candidates. That is because I told many of you last week that you could vote for multiple players. Unfortunately, that turned out to be incorrect. So, I believe many of your votes for Robustelli or Marshall were not tallied. So, to rectify that you will find a poll in the right column asking you to choose between Robustelli, Marshall and Jim Katcavage for the second defensive end slot. I'm adding Katcavage, who had 96.5 'u

Is it time to jump back into beaten-down financial stocks--or is it still too early?Even the financial giants themselves can't agree.Goldman Sachs said Tuesday that it has selectively upgraded shares of financial services companies as well as the brokerage and asset manager sectors. But the firm remains cautious on stocks of regional banks, mortgage and specialty finance companies and real estate investment trusts. Meanwhile, Merrill Lynch chief investment strategist Richard Bernstein warns against the dangers of "bottom-finishing" in financial stocks."We continue to suggest underweighting financial stocks because of the myriad of risks facing the sector. This applies to financials in a global context, not simply to U.S. financials," Bernstein wrote in "The RIC Report." In upgrading the brokerage and asset manager sectors, Goldman said the recent fears have been exaggerated and are mostly reflected in the prices of the stocks. Both sectors were upgraded to attractive from neutral. "We h

Giants will have three sixth-round picks
    2008-04-01 08:39:09
Per Ralph Vacchiano's Blue Screen blog, the Giants have been granted an extra "compensatory" draft pick in the sixth round of this year's draft. That gives the Giants three sixth-round picks (28th, 32nd and 33rd in that round). One of those came from the Ryan Grant trade. Let's see if GM Jerry Reese can use these picks to work his late-round magic again this year. I always maintain that it is the ability to find impact players in late rounds that can make a draft special, and Reese proved that last year. You will recall that Kevin Boss was a fifth-round choice, and both Ahmad Bradshaw and Michael Johnson were taken in the seventh round. We can only hope the sixth round is that kind to the Giants this time around. Oh, and don't ask me to explain the compensatory picks. I can't. Go read Vacchiano or Mike Garafolo if you need to know more about how that works.

Giants to host Redskins in season opener
    2008-03-27 10:15:56
The NFL’s newly established “tradition” of opening the season will continue this season. A person familiar with the yet to be released NFL schedule said the matchup will feature the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants playing host to the Washington Redskins. The Redskins head coach Jim Zorn will make his NFL regular season debut. [...]

Giants and Skins will open the season
    2008-03-27 07:36:31
The New York Giants' defense of their NFL title begins on Thursday night, Sept. 4, at home against the Washington Redskins the New York Daily News reported. An official announcement is expected to come at the NFL owners' meetings on Monday, but according to a league source the game is set. It will kickoff at 7 p.m. instead of 8:30. The NFL and NBC agreed to push up the start of the game so it will be less of a conflict with the final night of the Republican National Convention. Though the early opener usually goes to the defending champs, the Giants weren't a lock to host it because of all the offsite parking they need while their new stadium is being constructed. They had asked the NFL not to schedule any weekday games at Giants Stadium until construction was completed. But they apparently were able to strike a deal with the local businesses that provide the parking so they could make what one team source called "a one-time only exception." Cubs/Giants, spring training
    2008-03-25 16:51:00
Rich Hill gets a chance to find some sort of control today.  Jonathan Sanchez pitches for the Giants. The Cubs roster is mostly set at this point with the following players sure to be on the roster (barring trades or other acquisitions of course): Soto Lee DeRosa Ramirez Theriot Soriano Pie Fukudome Blanco Ward Cedeno Fontenot Murton Zambrano Lilly Dempster Hill Marquis Wood Howry Marmol Wuertz Lieber Hart There’s one more bullpen spot and it will go to either Sean Marshall (most likely) or Carmen Pignatiello.  Todays game begins at the same time, 3:05 pm.  It’s on CSN Chicago and MLB.tv.  Gameday. Jim Hendry hinted that MacPhail’s demands for Brian Roberts were ridiculous.  I can only take the trade front to a certain limit to where if it’s ridiculous I’m not going to do it just to get that extra piece.

    2008-03-25 13:05:06
Hello, my happy woodland friends! Welcome to sunny, happy Wrigley Field! Gosh, it's going to be a great season, don't you think? I mean, Ryan Theriot is having a fantastic spring, so our shortstop issues are solved. Felix Pie is on track to hit .999 this year, and Ryan Dempster is going to blow us all way in the starting rotation with his devastating 92-mph fastball. And who cares if we literally give up the farm for Brian Roberts? He's BRIAN ROBERTS!!! Who needs a farm, anyway? Farms are for growing things. Our team is already GROWN. What a terrific season this is going to be. I can't wait!  I bet we don't even lose a game until well into June, and only then because our team is tired from running around the bases so much. But before we start this World Series-winning season, we do have one teensy weensy problem to take care of. No! Don't panic! It's nothing big! Everything is great! Great and happy! Beer! Nachoes! Wrigley Field! Wrigley Field!!!!!!!!! Our good buddy Rich here (

Ex-Giants great Leonard Marshall answers BBV's questions
    2008-03-25 00:07:58
Every so often writing this blog lets me do something that I think is really, really cool. Today is one of those days. Thanks to the folks at Next Level Sports Marketing, who put me in touch with him, I have a lengthy Q&A for you with ex-Giants defensive end Leonard Marshall, one of the greatest players to ever suit up for Big Blue. Marshall played 12 seasons in the NFL, 10 with the Giants lined up next to Lawrence Taylor. He played on two Super Bowl champions and recorded 83.5 career sacks. He took the time to answer questions about his playing days, about the current Giants and about what he is up to these days. Thanks, Leonard! Anyway, here is the Q&A. Enjoy! Big Blue View: You played on two Super Bowl championship teams with the Giants. Can you compare the team that just won the Super Bowl to the championship teams you played on? Leonard Marshall: The 1990 Giants and this year past championship team had a lot in common. It was a team of destiny. Both team

Spring Training Game Threads: Athletics at Cubs; 2:05 p.m. CT and Cubs at Giants; 9:05 p.m. CT
    2008-03-19 12:00:00
Big Duel Today Well, it's not a winner-take-all, but today's day-night doubleheader could give either Ryan Dempster or Jon Lieber that much more of an edge for one of the final pitching spots. Both will be pitching for their respective split squad clubs today, with Dempster facing the Athletics during the day and Lieber squaring off against the Giants later tonight. With Zambrano, Lilly and Hill (even though he's gone into Nuke LaLoosh mode apparently) all guaranteed spots, the fight for the final two has come down to Marquis, Dempster and Lieber (sorry Sean Marshall fans, it ain't happening). Marquis had a decent outing yesterday, giving up five hits and one run while striking out five in five innings. His ERA in spring training so far is 1.93. For the pitchers going today, here's a quick breakdown of how Dempster (2-1 overall, 4 starts) and Lieber (1-0, 2 starts) have performed in spring training:                        IP

    BC lineman draws Giants' attention
    2008-03-19 00:05:56
Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger reported Tuesday that the Giants were keen observers at Boston College's pro day. Only the Giants weren't checking out quarterback Matt Ryan, who will likely be one of the first players selected. Interestingly, they were eyeballing 6-foot-7, 320-pound offensive tackle Gosden Cherilus, a likely first-round selection. Garafolo describes Cherilus as an "athletic guy who showed some outstanding pop on the bags today. He's got a great frame with long arms and, having seen him work out in person, I now understand these multiple scouting reports that say when he locks on to a defender, it's all over for the other guy. I like his size and athleticism a lot." Here is a full scouting report from NFL Draft Countdown. Strengths: Has excellent size and a huge frame with long arms...Strong and powerful..Gets a great push as a run blocker...Decent athlete...Has nimble feet..Mobile and can get to the second level...Very smart with great awareness...Nic

New Giants' linebacker plans on starting
    2008-03-17 22:49:30
Ever since the Giants announced his signing last week, David Carr seems to be the focus of most of the Giants-related discussion. Hardly anybody has been talking about Danny Clark, the free-agent linebacker who signed the same day. It is Clark, though, who figures to see the field a lot more often than Carr. Clark, on Sirius Radio with Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News Sunday morning, made it clear that he intends to earn a starting spot. "I am a starter," Clark, 30 said. "I am a starter in this league and I come to the Giants expecting to win a starting spot. There's a starting spot that Kawika Mitchell left open as a weak-side linebacker. Gerris Wilkinson is a guy that's been in the organization for a while and is the next in line, so to speak. In my opinion, my confidence - and you know, it's not a cockiness, it's a confidence - I'm expecting to go to win that spot." Here is the audio of the interview in its entirety. At first blush, you could read those co
