Giuliani and Edwards to Drop Out
    2008-01-30 14:45:41
This year’s primary season - short as it may seem - has been a fascinating study in political theater, jockeying for position, and what it takes for a political campaign to succeed in the year 2008. I’ll reserve my comments on some of the fascination with the minutia for a different post, but one [...]

    Rudy Giuliani to Drop Out
    2008-01-29 21:12:19
NBC News is announcing that Rudy Giuliani will be dropping out of the presidential race tomorrow and that he will be endorsing Senator John McCain. The “single-digit machine” as I have called him did manage to crack single digits on Tuesday. Giuliani finished with a disappointing 15 percent in Florida where he had put all of his resources and time. I can only say I will miss seeing him finish in single-digits and adding 9/11 to every sentence. Perhaps those two things had something to do with each other?

Ron Paul Vs Giuliani? Paul Wins.
    2008-01-24 01:20:49
File this one under "Whodathunkit?"From The Politico:Ron Paul continues to best GiulianiRon Paul, the Texas congressman frequently dismissed as a long shot candidate with no real chance at winning the Republican presidential nomination, has won nearly twice as many total votes to date as Rudy Giuliani, a candidate still widely viewed as a strong contender. With his second place finish in Saturday’s Nevada caucus, where Paul defeated Giuliani in every county in the state, the Texas congressman has now received 106,414 votes to 60,220 for Giuliani. Both candidates have collected zero actual delegates.Literally if you had bet me four months ago that Ron Paul would beat then pundit predicted front runner Rudy Giuliani in every one of the races prior to Florida I'd have taken that bet and then asked you what you were smoking. Looking at it now I think it goes to show exactly how much strength Paul's message has with people and that Rudy's strategy was a total gamble. Frankly I hope Paul be

Giuliani Goes for Broke in Florida
    2008-01-10 22:52:09
Rudolph Giuliani has decided to pull his paid staffers out of South Carolina and Michigan in order to focus on Florida. The Giuliani campaign has realized that he does not have a chance in South Carolina where he is polling at 7 percent. Apparently the 4 percent he got in Iowa and the 9 percent he got in New Hampshire was not what he was looking for this election season. The “single digit machine” is now focusing his campaigning and his resources in Florida where he actually has a chance. A Real Clear Politics poll average shows Giuliani is leading in Florida with 26.5 percent of the vote and Huckabee is in second with 21.3 percent. Will Florida be too little too late for Giuliani? South Carolina, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, and Iowa will all have been lost by Giuliani once Florida arrives. Giuliani will have absolutely no momentum going into Florida and will be competing with candidates who have won in other states and finished with more than just single digits. Any single candidate that may emerge as a clear frontrunner before Florida would certainly rollover Giuliani on their way through Florida. Florida was stripped of half of their delegates by the Republican Party as punishment for moving their primary before February 5. Giuliani, if he happened to win in Florida, would only get half of their original delegates. Giuliani has launched 5 TV ads in Florida and will be returning to the state on Friday.

    Ad Wars: Giuliani's "Super Bowl"
    2008-01-10 14:16:20
Rudy GiulianiThe Giuliani is airing a new ad, "Super Bowl," in Florida. The message of the ad? Ignore the results thus far. Giuliani is trying to convince voters that momentum heading into the Sunshine State doesn't matter. Of course, after Giuliani finished sixth in Iowa and barely edged out Ron Paul for fourth in New Hampshire, forgetting the early results is exactly what he wants everyone to do. Michigan PrimaryHonoring a pledge to campaign only in the original early voting states (Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina), Barack Obama and John Edwards will not appear on the ballot in Michigan. Hillary Clinton will be the only major candidate on the ballot for state Democrats, so some have started a campaign urging non-Clinton supporters to vote "uncommitted" in next week's primary. A ruling by the Democratic National Committee has stripped the state of all its delegates, making any victory there essentially useless. Mitt RomneyThe Romney campaign is airing a new radio ad, "Michigan Values," that features Michigan Congressman Pete Hoekstra and his wife. Senate Watch: MinnesotaDemocrat Mike Ciresi is taking to the air waves in Minnesota, hoping to win the party's nomination over Al Franken. In the first spot, "Middle," Ciresi equates Republican incumbent Norm Coleman with President Bush and focuses on the middle class. The second spot, "Change," highlights Ciresi's fight against the special interests.

Rudy Giuliani Proposes the Largest Tax Cut in American History
    2008-01-10 09:54:20
Rudy Giuliani may have given his campaign the boost it needed to take over the Republican Race. His new tax plan would reduce the corporate tax rate to 25% and the capital-gains tax to 10%. Presently, we are losing jobs overseas precisely because the corporate tax in America is 35%, which is the highest or second-highest in the world. This plan will create the stimulus needed to bring more... Click the Headline Link to Visit Copious Dissent and Read the Full Story.

    Rudy Giuliani
    2007-12-05 11:24:00
(From Dept. of Records, NYC Gov.) In 1944, Rudolph W. Giuliani was born to a working class family in Brooklyn, New York. As the grandson of Italian immigrants, Mayor Giuliani learned a strong work ethic and a deep respect for America's ideal of equal opportunity. He attended Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School (Class of '61) in Brooklyn, Manhattan College (Class of '65) in the Bronx and New York University Law School in Manhattan, graduating magna cum laude in 1968.Upon graduation, Rudy Giuliani clerked for Judge Lloyd MacMahon, United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York. In 1970, Giuliani joined the office of the U.S. Attorney. At age 29, he was named Chief of the Narcotics Unit and rose to serve as executive US Attorney. In 1975, Giuliani was recruited to Washington, D.C., where he was named Associate Deputy Attorney General and chief of staff to the Deputy Attorney General. From 1977 to 1981, Giuliani returned to New York to practice law at Patterson,

Giuliani Wrong on Mortgage Interest Deduction
    2007-12-03 00:00:00
In going after former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee's FairTax position, Rudy Giuliani criticized the FairTax with quite possibly the worst response possible from the perspective of sound tax policy. Giuliani didn't question the Fair Tax on issues where it should be questioned like the issue of evasion or how its prebate will be administered. Instead Giuliani, likely out of political expediency, attacked the FairTax by defending the worst provisions in the current income tax structure, most notably the home mortgage interest deduction. From The International Herald-Tribune:Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani criticized the "fair tax" proposal of rival candidate Mike Huckabee on Monday, saying it could hurt home buyers. The former New York City mayor cited the struggling U.S. housing market as a reason to avoid the plan, which would eliminate all taxes on income and investments in favor of a hefty federal sales tax."I think there are several tax deductions tha

Ad Wars: New Giuliani, Romney Ads
    2007-11-19 08:41:23
Rudy GiulianiThe Giuliani campaign is set to release its second ad of the cycle, "Leadership." Similar to the first, Giuliani notes his leadership of New York City and in the Justice Department. The ad includes the caveat that voters "aren't going to find perfection," a clear acknowledgment of Giuliani's social views that distress some Republicans. Mitt RomneyRomney has a new ad, "American Family," that suggests cultural values are a key issue in 2008. Though Romney doesn't explicitly mention any of his rivals, running an ad with his wife that focuses on family values may remind voters that rivals Giuliani, McCain, and Thompson have all been divorced. Owning the family values message is clearly crucial for Romney.

    Pat Robertson Endorses Giuliani
    2007-11-07 19:23:59
Somewhere right now John McCain is laughing. McCain got Brownback's endorsement and Giuliani gets this....From the WaPo:Pat Robertson Endorses Rudy:Deems Him 'More Than Acceptable to People of Faith'Pat Robertson, one of the most influential figures in the social conservative movement, announced his support for Rudy Giuliani's presidential bid this morning at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.Robertson's support was coveted by several of the leading Republican candidates and provides Giuliani with a major boost as the former New York City mayor seeks to convince social conservatives that, despite his positions supporting abortion rights and gay rights, he is an acceptable choice as the GOP nominee....Good news for Giuliani? Well having a supporter that can move hurricanes with his mind is always a good thing. However given Robertson's previous comments about the US deserving 9/11 many independents might start looking for another candidate. Over at The Carpetbagger Report

GOP Supporters to Break With Party Over Giuliani?
    2007-11-01 18:14:33
If they have a more conservative third party candidate to vote for they may. From the Pew Research Center:The GOP nomination race among Republican evangelicals, in particular, appears to be wide open: Giuliani, McCain and Thompson each draw about 20% of the vote among white Republican and Republican-leaning evangelical voters, with Huckabee and Romney getting about 10% each.In addition, a solid majority of Republican white evangelicals (55%) say they would at least consider voting for a conservative third-party candidate if the general election is between Giuliani and Clinton. Overall, 44% of Republicans and Republican-leaning voters say they would consider backing a third-party candidate who holds more conservative positions than Giuliani on social issues like abortion and gay marriage. Good news for The Constitution Party bad news for Giuliani and the GOP. However I have to wonder about the "Hillary effect" coming into play. Giuliani Runs to the Far Right (Updated)
    2007-11-01 06:58:09
**Update**Apparently the AP misquoted Guiliani as saying Osama instead of Assad (Pres, of Syria) blogger Phillip Klein picked up on the error while watching Countdown. I took a listen and he's right.**Looks like he's trying to shed any semblance of "liberalism" or even centrism. From Breitbart On Iran, Giuliani criticized Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., also a candidate for president, for saying they would engage in diplomatic relations with Iran. Obama has said he would be willing to meet with Iran's leader in the first year of his presidency without conditions; Clinton has said envoys below the presidential level should begin diplomatic work. "This is the world we live in. It's not this happy, romantic-like world where we'll negotiate with this one, or we'll negotiate with that one and there will be no preconditions, and we'll invite (Iranian President Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad to the White House, we'll invite Osama (bin Laden) to the White House," Giuliani said. McCain Takes Giuliani to Task on Torture
    2007-10-26 15:09:51
From the NY TimesRudolph W. Giuliani’s statement on Wednesday that he was uncertain whether waterboarding, a simulated drowning technique, was torture drew a sharp rebuke yesterday from Senator John McCain, who said that his failure to call it torture reflected his inexperience. “All I can say is that it was used in the Spanish Inquisition, it was used in Pol Pot’s genocide in Cambodia, and there are reports that it is being used against Buddhist monks today,” Mr. McCain, who spent more than five years in a North Vietnamese prison camp, said in a telephone interview. Of presidential candidates like Mr. Giuliani, who say that they are unsure whether waterboarding is torture, Mr. McCain said: “They should know what it is. It is not a complicated procedure. It is torture.” Mr. Giuliani said on Wednesday night at a forum in Davenport, Iowa, that he favored “aggressive questioning” of terrorism suspects and using “means that are a little tougher” with terrorists but tha

Giuliani Sells Out to Values Voters?
    2007-10-25 05:26:56
I missed this but fortunately Sideways Mencken didn't.From The Hill: Perkins: Giuliani supports marriage amendmentTony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, told The Hill Saturday that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) would support a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.Perkins said Giuliani told him in a private meeting that if the Defense of Marriage Act appeared to be failing or if multiple states began to legalize same-sex marriages, then he would support the constitutional amendment. Giuliani did not mention the amendment or the issue of gay marriage during his address to the Values Voters Summit, but that position could win him favor with some social conservatives who view the former mayor warily. Perkins said that was not enough to assuage his concerns about Giuliani, but “it was nice to hear.”If what Perkins said is true this may be the first step in Giuliani selling out to reap the religious rights votes and that says a lot about Giuliani. He'd do well to remember how much flack Mitt Romney has taken over his changing stances on value based issues.

    Rick Perry Endorses Giuliani
    2007-10-18 00:33:27
Texas Governor Rick Perry endorsed the candidacy of Rudy Giuliani in Washington this morning. The announcement comes as something of a surprise, though according to Marc Ambinder, "Giuliani's finance team is top-heavy with Texas Republicans, and the Perry and Giuliani circles intersect."Perry's endorsement lends conservative credibility to the Giuliani bid and provides the campaign its first endorsement from a sitting governor. Perry ascended to the governor's office after then-Governor Bush was elected president in 2000. He has since twice been re-elected, though he garnered just 39% of the vote in a five-way 2006 race. His support for Giuliani will likely push him into vice presidential rumors, as he would provide a fairly strong conservative record and regional balance for Giuliani. In announcing his support, Perry acknowledged his differences with the former New York City mayor, saying, "if you’re my 80 percent friend, you’re not my 20 percent enemy." He said concern over Giuliani's pro-choice view is eased by his pledge to appoint "strict constructionist" judges. "I've looked him in the eye. I've asked him the hard questions," Perry added. He went on to praise Giuliani's record of leadership and experience in dealing with crime and terrorism.Perry also managed to include an attack on rival Mitt Romney in his endorsement announcement today. Perry hinted at comments Romney made at a recent debate, saying a president "must be able to stare down criminal elements without dialing up their lawyer first." Romney had suggested he would sit down with his attorneys before attacking Iranian nuclear facilities.

    Ad Wars: MoveOn vs. Giuliani
    2007-09-19 15:48:07
Hillary ClintonThe Clinton campaign is airing a new ad in Iowa and New Hampshire focusing on her new health care plan. The ad touts her past work on health care issues and suggests the plan includes a variety of choices rather than mandated government coverage.Mitt RomneyThe Romney campaign is airing a new radio ad in Iowa denouncing gay marriage and "activist" courts. Rivals charge that this is the same Romney that said in 1994 that he was stronger on gay rights issues than Ted Kennedy. An Iowa court briefly allowed same sex marriages last month, before putting a hold on the ruling so a higher court can weigh in.MoveOn.orgRudy Giuliani has been criticizing the organization since it released an ad attacking General Petraeus in the New York Times last week. Why Rudy Giuliani Is Attacking Hillary Clinton
    2007-09-17 17:33:00
Giuliani's attacks on Hillary are seen by most on the left as pathetic at best. But let's face it, there are two very important reasons why Giuliani is sending his venom in her direction:1. He wants to be seen as Hillary's obvious opponent in the general election before he's won the nomination, especially as his numbers drop drastically in polls. He was the closest thing the GOP had to a frontrunner, and now that status is being threatened by Thompson's curiously good poll numbers. It doesn't matter that Hillary had nothing to do with the moveon.org ad, he needs a point to attack her on so that we're already witnessing a Giuliani/Clinton race. He wants Republicans to view it as a foregone conclusion that it will be him in the general election.2. If you're going to pick somebody to criticize as a Republican, Hillary's a good target. Republicans hate Hillary because she's stridently partisan and she's the symbol of the far left, whether her views actually match that stereotype or not. She's a safer pick for Giuliani to attack than his opponents in the GOP, especially in a race that's become a mudslinging early on (not that Giuliani has stayed out of attacking Romney and Thompson when given the chance). It's actually a fairly smart campaign move on Giuliani's part to draw attention forward to the general election and present himself as the presumptive nominee.

    Giuliani Rebuts Moveon.org's Ad
    2007-09-14 01:08:00
In an interesting and clever campaign move, Rudy Giuliani has decided to place his own ad in the New York Times, asking them to allow him to pay the same discounted advertisement rates that moveon.org paid. The ad quotes Hillary Clinton at the top of the page and chastizes her for not denouncing the moveon.org ad and for her comments to General Petraeus, in which she claimed his progress report on Iraq required "willing suspension of disbelief."The ad goes on to cite Petraeus's impressive military record. The ad states a question: "Who should America listen to...A decorated soldier's commitment to defending America, or Hillary Clinton's committment to defending MoveOn.org?" The ad ends with a quote from Giuliani: "These times call for statesmanship, not politicians spewing political venom."Giuliani obviously sees Clinton as the Democrat frontrunner, and therefore who he would be up against if he wins the primary, which explains why he's not attacking the other Democrats who spoke up ag

Rudy Giuliani: Every Foreigner in U.S. Must Carry New Card
    2007-09-02 22:27:24
I know this is kinda old, but it didn’t get the attention it deserves: Rudy Giuliani wants every foreigner in America to carry around a ‘SAFE’ card, along with their passport.Yes, it has been proposed before; but by a presidential candidate?Rudy G is trying to cement his immigration position as hard line after Mitt Romney came out of the Ames Poll swinging hard. And the worst news?“If you don’t have that card, you get thrown out of the country,” Giuliani said.Under what circumstance would a foreigner be asked to show their card? Would they be issued immediately? Is this even legal? Those are the questions that have to be answered."When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross." - Sinclair Lewis

Giuliani to Reveal Five-Star Conservative Judicial Advisory Panel?
    2007-07-16 14:02:00
So it seems that Giuliani wants to put on a good impression by announcing a power house Judicial Advisory Panel. I just don't see Conservatives getting behind Giuliani on this move alone, he leans a little more to the right than I think most people would like.Last week, he was smeared by Firefighters for a myriad of thier own reasons. What I find hilarious about all of this is if the issue centered around 9/11 then why are just now hearing about it? Say it with me, election year is coming.I think we can easily conclude that this is certainly another checkmark in the long line of smear campaigns leading up to the primary. The question is how will the general voting populace receive it?Of course, this is all probably unimportant information. The second Fred Thompson or Newt Gingrich announce, we can stick a fork in Rudy as well.

    Ad Wars: Giuliani vs. Firefighters
    2007-07-12 18:19:00
Rudy GiulianiThe International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) released a web video yesterday attacking Rudy Giuliani's leadership and character. Fearing any kind of Swift Boat or Macaca momentum, Giuliani's campaign moved quickly to discredit the union as left-leaning group that will certainly endorse a Democrat for president. Marc Ambinder notes, however, that the IAFF has a diverse membership and one of the two unions to produce the video endorsed President Bush in 2004.Hillary ClintonA Hillary Clinton support has produced what is probably the best knock off yet of the "Crush On Obama" video that swept the web a month ago. Giuliani The Firearm Champion!?
    2007-07-07 15:57:00
It seems the former Mayor of New York is now doing a bit of flip flopping of his own. When asked at a recent appearance about his record on firearms, he emphatically declared we have the right to bear arms. Now hang on a second...this is the same Rudy Giuliani right? The same guy who lobbied for and instituted strict gun control laws in New York? Now, he did specifically say it didn't matter if he believed in it or not, and that he was a Constitutionalist. Does this sound like someone who is trying to have it both ways? As we have seen time and time again in this Presidential race, this kind of behavior simply alienates people. Any firearm enthusiast already knows the politics here, believe me. I have much more respect for people who will stand by thier personal beliefs and allow me to decide if I support it rather than trying to be both teams at once.Mr. Giuliani will serve as an honorary race offical for tonight's Pepsi 400, obviously attempting to secure the southern NASCAR

Matt Lepacek, a freelance reporter for Infowars.com, was arrested for asking a question to one of Giuliani’s staff members in a press conference after the GOP debate. He (press secretary) identified the reporter as the one who had previously asked Giuliani about his knowledge of WTC building collapses (prior to them collapsing) and ordered NH [...]

    Candidate Profiles: Rudy Giuliani
    2007-05-22 20:03:00
BACKGROUNDRudy Giuliani became "America's Mayor" in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Now, he's attempting to parlay the fame and recognition that followed into the Republican nomination.Giuliani became a US Attorney in 1970, and was appointed by President Reagan as Associate Attorney General in 1981. During his time in the Justice Department, he prosecuted a number of high profile cases, including Marc Rich's tax evasion and several leaders of New York crime families. Initially a Democrat, Giuliani became an independent and later a registered Republican. In 1989, he lost a narrow mayoral race, but came back to defeat David Dinkins in 1993. His tenure as mayor is one of controversy and success. He worked with the New York Police Department to reduce crime during his two terms and oversaw a revitalization of the city's business community. He has been criticized for race relations as mayor, including several incidents involving police action against black citizens. He was also con

An Open Letter to Mr. Giuliani
    2007-05-21 06:47:00
Dear Mr. Giuliani,During the South Carolina Republican Debate on May 15, 2007, you expressed shock and outrage at Congressman Ron Paul’s suggestion that the motivation for the 9-11 attack and other acts of terror by radical Muslims can be traced back to America’s history of aggressive foreign policy and interventionist actions in the Middle East. He didn’t say that Americans were to blame for the attacks or that the terrorists’ actions were justified. He said in essence that our long history of military action in the Middle East and our history of meddling in those people’s political affairs can incite hatred and have adverse consequences. You responded with the following rhetorical flourish: “I don't think I've ever heard that before and I've heard some pretty absurd explanations for September 11.”Haven’t heard that before? Pardon me for saying so, but this is a rather curious thing for someone with Presidential ambitions to declare. Normally a candidate endeavors t

Giuliani Opposed Welfare Reform in Order to Protect Illegals
    2007-05-15 15:44:20
Rudy Giuliani’s record as a pro-choice, pro-gay-marriage New York City mayor is well known, but his willingness to shelter illegal aliens from federal immigration laws in the Big Apple should also give conservatives pause. Under his control, the New York City Corp. lost a lawsuit against the federal government over Republican-crafted welfare reform legislation that required state and local authorities to report illegal aliens to the Immigration and Naturalization Service. The law stipulated that only citizens and certain legal immigrants were to receive food stamps and imposed financial penalties on states that did not verify the legal status of those applying for the stamps. In case anyone hasn’t noticed, Rudy Giuliani is as much a libber as ANY libber out there, and for him to wear the name Republican is an insult to the Republican party, but for Giuliani to even remotely try to pass himself of as a Conservative is like a scene from the Twilight Zone… Imagine if you w

Giuliani Uses 9/11 to Get Rich
    2007-05-15 12:03:00
Just months after the terrorist attacks on New York City in September of 2001, "America's mayor" Rudolph Giuliani "took the first official step toward making himself rich," writes the Washington Post.It was on December 7, 2001, three weeks before leaving office as mayor of New York City, that Giuliani sent a letter to the city's Conflicts of Interest Board asking permission to form a consulting firm. The broadly defined company, Giuliani Parters, would bring in more than $100 million providing "management consulting service to governments and business" over the next 5 years, according to a Washington Post source. That fame and success turned Giuliani into a Republican front-runner for the 2008 presidential election, and transformed him from "a moderately well-off public servant into a globe-trotting consultant whose net worth is estimated to be in the tens of millions of dollars."

Giuliani Shifts Abortion Speech Gently to Right
    2007-05-12 00:59:40
Rudy’s International House of Waffles… As he prepares for a possible run for president — a road that goes deep into the heart of conservative America — Rudolph W. Giuliani takes with him a belief in abortion rights that many think could derail his bid to capture the Republican nomination. But in recent weeks, as he has courted voters in South Carolina and talked to conservative media outlets, Mr. Giuliani has highlighted a different element of his thinking on the abortion debate. He has talked about how he would appoint “strict constructionist” judges to the Supreme Court — what abortion rights advocates say is code among conservatives for those who seek to overturn or limit Roe v. Wade, the 1973 court ruling declaring a constitutional right to abortion. The effect has been to distance himself from a position favoring abortion rights that he espoused when he ran for mayor of New York City, where most voters favor abortion rights. “I hate it,” he said of abortion in a

    Scrutiny For Giuliani
    2007-03-16 17:03:00
Rudy Giuliani is quickly discovering the perils of becoming a national frontrunner for the Republican nomination. Though most national polls show that he's maintaining a sizable lead over John McCain, it seems likely that the anti-Rudy machine is just getting started.• He has come under fire from the International Association of Fire Fighters for his handling of the September 11th attacks. While his feud with the union is not new, it does tarnish his reputation built largely upon his performance that day. When the union held its meeting with major presidential candidates this week, Giuliani was not initially not invited to speak and his absence from the forum was quite conspicuous.• A video surfaced on YouTube last week, illustrating Giuliani's views on abortion in 1989: "There must be public funding for abortions." This probably won't sit well with at least a few conservative primary voters. • Giuliani met last week with former NYC Police Commissioner William Bratton, hoping

Giuliani Will Prepare for Alien Invasion
