| Kristen Frantzen Orr Glass Beads | | 2008-05-13 07:16:01 | | Kristen Frantzen Orr's handmade glass beads blend her love of nature with her background as a watercolor artist. A single bead can take hours to make, because she sculpts with molten glass over the flame of an oxygen-propane torch. To add detail to her work, she makes special canes from multiple colors of glass. By combining these components with layers of transparent colors, she creates depth and captures an exciting play of light.Examples of her work:After the beads have been annealed in a kiln to remove any internal stress, Kristen blends them into unique jewelry designs. This process, she says, is like framing a painting, by giving the beads a beautiful setting. For some of her pieces, she crochets spheres of fine silver, copper, or niobium wire. By stringing tiny seed beads onto the wire, she creates beaded-crocheted wire beads that resemble granulated gold.Kristen's work is in collections throughout the U.S., and in Japan, England, South Africa, and Australia. | | Rumble: When you think of Venice: Glass art | | 2008-05-08 16:19:17 | | One more think many people think of, when talking about Venice: Venetian glass..!Venetian glass making tradition goes way back, but only got really known when the Venetian Republic, fearing fire and destruction to the city’s mostly wood buildings, ordered glass makers to move their foundries to the island of Murano, in the Venetian archipelago in 1291. Murano's glass makers were soon the island’s most prominent citizens. By the 14th century, glass makers were allowed to wear swords, enjoyed immunity from prosecution by the Venetian state and found their daughters married into Venice’s most affluent families. The catch was that glass makers weren't allowed to leave the Republic.Murano’s glass makers held a monopoly on quality glass making for centuries, developing or refining many technologies including crystalline glass, enameled glass (smalto), glass with threads of gold (aventurine), multicolored glass (millefiori), milk glass (lattimo), and imitation gemstones made of glass | | By: The Road to the Horizon | | |

| | Stained Glass Construction | | 2008-04-23 14:33:59 | | There are two ways to make stained glass, leaded or copper foiled. The major difference between the two is in the construction. With leaded stained glass, the glass is fitted into channels of lead came. In contrast, copper foiled stained glass is constructed by wrapping each piece of glass with copper foil. Leaded stained glass historically is found in churches. It was during the Victoria Era where leaded stained glass was introduced into homes and has remained a popular method of constructing stained glass ever since. Foiled stained glass was mastered by Tiffany in the early 1900’s and soon after became a popular method for creating stained glass.Common Questions:Is one method better than the other? he simple answer is no. A better answer is that it depends on the artist and the design. What is the difference in leaded and foiled construction? With leaded stained glass, the construction must begin at an outer corner, the individual pieces are fitted into lead came. Once all pieces ar | | By: Home Remodeling and Repair Tips | | |

Now researchers at Northwestern University have used metallic nanotubes to make thin films that are semitransparent, highly conductive, flexible and come in a variety of colors, with an appearance similar to stained glass. These results, published online in the journal Nano Letters, could lead to improved high-tech products such as flat-panel displays and solar cells.

Here are all the answers you need.Since Pop Photo began its improved lens-testing program in 1988, we have done full Lab tests on 444 interchangeable optics for SLR and rangefinder cameras, both film and digital. What we've learned could fill a book -- but we'll spare you, and instead answer 10 of the most common questions photo enthusiasts ask.1) What's better, an image-stabilized lens or a fast (bright) lens?An IS lens counteracts only your motion, but a fast lens can counteract both your movement and your subject's by transmitting more light, letting you use a faster shutter speed to freeze motion and reduce blur when handholding. IS, no matter how effective, won't sharpen a running tyke photographed at 1/15 sec.If you shoot a lot of action, you'll want a fast lens. If you take a lot of handheld, low-light candids of stationary subjects, you'll want stabilization. To take the pain away, two seats were purchased in the VIP area at Wandsworth Cineworld for a recent showing.Bigger, more comfortable seats at the back of the cinema, worth the extra few quid surely. Not a bit of it. After being shown to the lift we were directed to a room which seemed to be above the auditorium. Inside were nine big seats. But here's the extraordinary thing - they were behind a big glass window. There was a speaker in the room, but doesn't this take away the whole cinema experience? In an incident similar in stupidity to that which forced Lightning d-man Dan Boyle to sit out much of the early season, Leoprone has managed to get hurt in possibly the dumbest way possible. | | | Dichroic Glass Cabochons | | 2007-12-11 14:11:46 | | The word dichroic is Greek, and it means two colors. Dichroic glass has two colors in its coatings—a reflected color and a transmitted color. It is valued for its brilliant iridescent play of colors. The coatings that produce those colors are actually multiple ultra-thin layers of metal oxides—aluminum, chromium, silicon, zirconium or titanium—which are sprayed on the surface of the glass. Pale Mint with Opalescent Base Dichroic CabochonThe aerospace industry created this coated glass, and it has been used in art and bead-making since the 1990s. Dichroic glass has a shimmering effect similar to the iridescence in opals. Different colors can be viewed by examining it at different angles. The colors are brilliant saturated wavelengths of light.Pinks CabochonMaking dichroic glass cabochons involves using many layers of color and two or three firings in a kiln. A glass saw is then used to cut out the best shapes, and a glass grinder is used to remove any rough edges. The piece is then polished to a brilliant shine. A final fire-polishing in the kiln brings out the beauty of each cabochon. Caribbean CabochonThe ProcessDichroic glass must be manufactured in an ultra-clean environment, making it one of the most expensive glasses made today. The process involves depositing many very thin layers of rare metal oxides (magnesium, silicon, titanium) on the surface of a piece of glass. A clean sheet of glass is affixed to a rotating arm within a special vacuum chamber. A container of metal oxides is placed in the chamber. An electron beam vaporizes the oxides, and the resulting particles evenly coat the rotating glass sheet.Dichroic Glass JewelryDichroic cabochons can be used in many ways to create handcrafted jewelry. They can be wire-wrapped, used with other processes like precious metal clay, and in traditional settings. Lisa's artistic philosophy: To me, they are just beads, and they are just glass until somebody owns them and they bring them pleasure – only then do they become art. With the natural world as my inspiration, I constantly and purposefully build my skills to enhance my creations. These are pictures of two of her sold items—just to show you some examples of her work:Electroformed Leaf Bead Blended colors of plum and smoky brown topaz. The small maple leaf has been electroformed, and has a patina that shimmers a hint of magenta. Topaz Electroformed Lampwork BeadThis focal bead has so much depth! It has topaz, browns and trails of silvered ivory and CZ's. It has been electroformed and finished with a subtle patina. Perfect colors for fall!Lisa's Bio:"I have always been in love with art glass. Among my fondest childhood memories are trips to the hobby store with my parents where they would let me pick a new glass figurine from the showcase. Today, I collect glass flower frogs, and my home is decorated with antique Depression glass and contemporary fused pieces. "In 2003, not long after discovering handmade beads and artistic jewelry, I entered the world of lampworking and never looked back. Lampworking and jewelry design have brought me much joy including meeting wonderful people and forging new friendships that will last a lifetime." She has studied lampworking with some of the finest instructors including Kate Fowle Meleny, Larry Scott, and Michael Barley. And she recently began teaching beginning lampworking. Aside from her other hobby—photography—she works fulltime for an engineering firm in Indianapolis. She has been married to her best friend and biggest supporter, Steve, since 1983. Hace 30 años que nos dejó Agatha Christie pero tuvo una prolífica carrera con casi un centenar de novelas, muchos relatos y obras de teatro, la celebre autora de misterio en ventas solo se ve ensombrecida por la Biblia y Shakespeare.La salida está prevista para Septiembre en un evento anual dedicado a la escritora, con la primera de las novelas gráficas dibujada por Bruno Lachard, y está previsto que los títulos vayan incrementando en los próximos meses con títulos como The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, The Mystery of the Blue Train, Death on the Nile, The Murder on the Links, Murder on the Orient Express, The Secret of Chimneys. Pero al parecer el plan es ambicioso y los comics saldrán este mes que viene, en un número de 12 títulos de 83, y los 71 restantes lo harían los próximos 12 meses, se busca llegar al público joven.Y ya que estamos con libros, está a punto de publicarse la segunda novela de la saga The Looking Glass Wars de Frank Beddor que como sabreis tiene una versión en comic titulada Hatter M guionizada por el mismo y dibujada por Ben Templestmith, aquí teneis el trailer. | | By: Pulp Comic

Remember when bottles were glass? Rem... | | 2007-08-16 13:06:00 | | RandomnessRemember when bottles were glass? Remember how heavy they were? remember collecting money by recycling them? And then everything went plastic, that cheap bubble -y plastic, not the sleek plastic everything is now, the faux glass. You pay extra for plastic that looks like glass. Sprite has always been good at that. A Sprite bottle looks like a sprite bottle. It's the dimples.it doesn't matter how glassy the plastic is formed to, you can drop it from the counter and it still isn't going to shatter. You aren't going to break it. You also don't see as much broken glass around either. Pretty much the only thing that still comes in glass are beer bottles and the odd condiment. I remember when just about the only plastic you would have around the house was your shampoo bottles. There isn't as much sea glass anymore either. There used to be a lot of people who did thing's things, with sea glass. I wonder if they had to start making there own. Perhaps there are even sea glass | | By: Reading In The Dark

| | Chihuly Glass at Fairchild Gardens, Miami | | 2007-08-03 12:32:00 | | Chihuly Glass at Fairchild Gardens, MiamiSince I stayed out late last night here are some archive Chihuly Glass shots from Fairchild Tropical Gardens in Miami. I have recently been going through my hard drives trying to get rid of some old pictures and came across these two. The first one is from the 2007 exhibit and the second one is from 2006.I went to the Foreigner concert last night. It was great. Even though it isn’t my favorite band they really put on a good show. I got a couple of pictures. The first two are Mick Jones the lead guitarist and songwriter. The other one is Kelly Hansen the lead singer with Jason Bonham (drums, his dad was in Led Zeppelin) and Jeff Jacobs. They played a lot of the ‘hits’ and a couple I didn’t recognize. Somehow I had bought front row, dead center tickets. I was sitting next to the mayor and his wife. Here are some other posts I have made on Chihuly Glass:2007 FairchildMore 2007 FairchildGardens and Glass, 2006, NYBG | | By: Digital Flower Pictures.com | | |
| | Drum of Glass... | | 2007-08-02 08:45:00 | | Here we go...another day and another favorite tune. J.A. has sent a mail recommending Drum of Glass by Norwegian new wave/electronica quartet Monomen and after two listens I knew exactly why he was so eager that we should listen to this. The four youngsters (the lead singer is 18 years old) have clearly been snooping around in their dads' record collections and been listening to bands like Joy Division, New Order, Depeche Mode, Devo etc. So very clearly a track that finds its inspiration in the 80's, but at the same time still manages to sound like fresh breath of air. And a track that is so energetic, so wonderful and has this "it will get into your head and stay there" catchiness that I feel almost certain that Editors would give away their entire back catalogue for just this one song.+ Drum of GlassMP3 found via Insound, where lots of other interesting and free downloads are available. | | By: Hits In The Car | | |
| | Fred Thompson: A Glass Half Full | | 2007-07-31 07:07:00 | | Last week, we discussed the hurdles that Fred Thompson must overcome to win the Republican nomination. Now, we'll take a look at everything that is helping to propel the former Tennessee senator towards the presidency.First, let's address some of the negatives we brought up in our previous post. Yes, questions have been raised about Thompson's history on the abortion issue. However, in a field that includes an openly pro-choice candidate (Giuliani) and a past pro-choice candidate (Romney), Thompson's sometimes vague history is largely shielded. Thompson may be a Washington insider, but the public does not perceive him in that way. His time outside of Washington has sufficiently distanced him from an unpopular president and an unpopular war. He can campaign as someone who knows Washington, but also knows how to fix its problems. It could certainly be difficult for Thompson to live up to the hype surrounding his would-be campaign, but excitement isn't such a bad thing.Thompso | | By: Political Realm | | |

| | Fred Thompson: A Glass Half Empty | | 2007-07-16 18:44:00 | | Back in March, it seemed more like Internet fancy than political reality. Fred Thompson running for president? Really? But the draft movement picked up steam and Thompson was apparently more serious about running than we thought. Just like that, Thompson found himself atop some state and national polls. Let's take a look, however, at the pessimist's perspective of Fred Thompson's campaign.Where's the beef? During his eight years in the Senate (he filled the remaining term of Al Gore, before being elected to a full term in 1996), Thompson failed to lead the way on any significant piece of legislation. He chaired the Governmental Affairs Committee, investigated President Clinton's campaign fundraising, but eventually produced little of substance. Where were Thompson's conservative ideas, vision, and leadership then? His elected experience will be little more than that of Barack Obama, who's frequently criticized for it. | | The Glass is Half Full and Half Empty | | 2007-07-16 14:41:00 | | Last week was a week of records. The Dow and S&P closed at new highs. The NASDAQ closed at its highest level in six years. Oil closed at $74 a barrel, an 11 month high. The Euro hit an all-time high against the dollar. It now takes over $1.38 to buy one Euro. (My sympathy to all of you vacationing in Europe this summer.)
Twice last week I read/heard commentators saying that rising oil prices are good – they’re a sign of a strong economy. The talking heads glass is half full (and I think it’s filled with something stronger than water). Rising energy prices worry me. They take money out of the consumers pocket, add to inflation and increase our balance of payments deficit, leading to higher interest rates. Sorry, my glass is half empty on this one, but maybe I’m just old school.
Something else happened last week, which received almost no press. Credit spreads widened. This mean | | By: MUTUALDecision Blog - The Mutual Fund Blog Dedicat
| | | John McCain: A Glass Half Full | | 2007-07-10 17:40:00 | | A few weeks ago, we looked at John McCain's struggles in the race for the Republican nomination. Today, we'll try to paint a rosier picture for the Arizona senator's campaign. To understand what is going right for McCain's campaign, we need to know what is not. Everything. He lost his frontrunner status when Rudy Giuliani surprised most by actually getting serious about running. He no longer has the strongest campaign organization--a distinction that probably goes to Mitt Romney, at least in Iowa. He has lagged in the fundraising race for the first half of 2007. Now Fred Thompson, who chaired McCain's 2000 campaign and was making fundraising calls for him at the beginning of the year, is skyrocketing up the polls and perhaps stealing more of McCain's donors. Once the press darling, the media is now ready and willing to write a slew of "McCain is doomed!!!!" stories, sensing blood in the water. Policy wise, he was damaged by his leadership on the failed immigration reform plan and | | By: Political Realm | | |

Got it from my friends over at The Broken Bow and MattHuggins.com.Spud Oregon at Nice4Rice recently posted about needing more blog juice in order to be accepted into various money-making programs like ReviewMe. He found that despite his high ranks in Technorati and Alexa combined with a fairly significant number of inbound links, he encountered some trouble being accepted to some programs. The problem was likely due to his Bloglines subscription count, thus, Spud decided to work hard at growing his Bloglines subscriber count. Part of his efforts at improving his Bloglines feed reader count was to partake in the Bloglines List started by Darin Carter. | | Murano Glass at the National Museum of Scotland | | 2007-06-21 11:59:58 | | My other theme for my visit to the museum earlier this week was the glass display. My favourite displays were of the Murano pieces. Murano is an island close to Venice, where glass has been made since the 9th century.
The photo below shows pieces from the mid to late 19th century, when Salvati led the revival of the Venetian glass industry. Salvati was born in Vicenza and worked as barrister in Venice.
The other photo is a collection of Murano glassware from the 1980s. You can also see my reflection in the display case as I took the photo.
