    “Good Reads” for book lovers
    2008-06-13 11:08:16
I am a lover of reading books. From the very early age, I always dreamed about having a library of books, on variety of topics. I still love reading books and it helped me a lot with my teaching career also. Even searching at the net doesn’t stops me from reading, I still read a lot [...]...

    Good Reads: After Hillary

Larry Sabato: How Could John McCain Win In November? It's obvious to just about everyone that, at least theoretically, the Democrats have a near-perfect climate for presidential victory in 2008. A deeply unpopular Republican President is mired around 30 percent in the polls; last week, Bush was at 28 percent, a couple points higher than Richard Nixon on the day he resigned. Bush hasn't seen majority backing in three years or even a miserable 40 percent support level in two years. General Petraeus' optimism notwithstanding, a large majority of Americans believe that the Iraq war wasn't worth fighting and should be phased out as soon as reasonably possible. The economy has tanked, gas prices are through the roof, and an incredible eight in ten Americans think the country is seriously off on the wrong track -- usually a death knell for the White House party.John McCain, as the nominee of the Republican Party, is saddled with the legacy of the 30 percent President. He spends much of his tim...

Good Reads: Long Road Ahead For Democrats

David Brooks: The Long DefeatHillary Clinton may not realize it yet, but she’s just endured one of the worst weeks of her campaign.First, Barack Obama weathered the Reverend Jeremiah Wright affair without serious damage to his nomination prospects. Obama still holds a tiny lead among Democrats nationally in the Gallup tracking poll, just as he did before this whole affair blew up. Second, Obama’s lawyers successfully prevented re-votes in Florida and Michigan. That means it would be virtually impossible for Clinton to take a lead in either elected delegates or total primary votes. Third, as Noam Scheiber of The New Republic has reported, most superdelegates have accepted Nancy Pelosi’s judgment that the winner of the elected delegates should get the nomination. Instead of lining up behind Clinton, they’re drifting away. Her lead among them has shrunk by about 60 in the past month, according to Avi Zenilman of Politico.com.In short, Hillary Clinton’s presidential prospects con...

Good Reads: Throw Out The Maps

John Heilemann: A Pants-Down PrimerUndoubtedly the scarcest commodity in American political life, with its sky-high levels of partisan polarization and its cable-news-driven incentives toward oppositionalism and contrarianism, is unanimity of opinion. So maybe the most astonishing thing about the Eliot Spitzer self-immolation was the gusher of agreement that it brought forth from all sides, especially on two points. First, there was the unalloyed shock that, of all people, Spitzer—that storied crusader against Wall Street corruption, that tireless scourge against all manner of malfeasance, that embodiment of political rectitude—could possibly have been engaged in transgressions so tawdry and venal, so reckless and just plain dumb. And second, there was the insta-verdict about what he had to do: apologize (as profusely as possible) and resign (as quickly as possible). But the long and endlessly entertaining history of political jiggery-pokery suggests that neither of these reactions...

Candy Crowley: GOP Starts To Chart Its Post-Bush CourseUnderlying all the questions about abortion, taxes and war during Thursday night's GOP debate was a simple question: What's next for the Republican Party? The answer is not so easy.It wasn't just the first Republican debate of the '08 cycle. It was the first event of the post-Bush era -- the first time the 10 Republican candidates had a chance to show where the party goes from here.Howard Fineman: Sizing Up The Second TierLet’s hear it for the “second-” and “third-”tier presidential candidates. We’ll have world enough and time this year and next to suffer through the purposefully vague rhetoric of front runners. But these are the moments for the single-minded, the passionate and the obscure. They can speak their piece and get attention. And this time they might even have the chance to influence the tone, if not the course, of the ’08 campaign.Chuck Todd: Republican Identity CrisisThe GOP enters its first debate wi...
