| Local Governments Imposing Punitive Taxes on Car Sharing | | 2008-06-22 23:00:00 | | With governments at all levels exhorting citizens to be more efficient in their gasoline usage, it seems surprising that local governments are slapping car sharing services (such as Zipcar) with punitive taxes. An article in last week's Wall Street Journal looks at the trend, which usually takes the form of imposing a fixed tax on both rental car companies and car sharing services if a car is rented for any part of a day. In Pittsburgh, for instance, users pay a flat $2 tax whether they rent from Enterprise for a day, or from Zipcar for an hour. Since Zipcar's rates average $9 an hour, it's a hefty tax burden. Rental car companies probably don't mind seeing their newest competition squirm a bit. And legislators are in no hurry to change things: The county executive's office says it is drafting an amendment that would exempt car sharing from the tax, but doesn't believe it will come up for a vote in the county council "anytime soon."[...]"Our position has been this is wron | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |

| | The Governments Housing Bailouts: Why Is This Even Being Considered? | | 2008-05-08 10:18:00 | | I wasn't particularly thrilled with the idea of bailing out Bear-Stearns. I could partially understand it, but I don't believe it was warranted. And that was a Republican maneuver. So have politics now become a "We must one-up the other's," arena with this push for Housing Bail-outs?Why is this even an issue eating up taxpayer's money to debate in Congress? When did it even become the governments responsibility to bail-out those who made bad financial choices? It's not an area that the government should push it's nose into. That's the beauty of free enterprise and a self adjusting market. Let the housing issue play itself out. Companies fail, new companies emerge. The same goes for the housing industry. Home values rise, home values fall. Yes, it really is that simple.Awww, but all those millions of people who will loose their homes. Don't you even care? Oh, You mean those millions of people who are actually ONLY 0.5% of the housing market that's in trouble? Yeah, I care. It's called TO | | By: Hoopy Frood Dude | | |

| Why Have Governments? | | 2008-05-05 14:41:09 | | We should just let go of government, stop voting for DemoPulibcans, ignore them, buy and sell on totally private markets. They dare not use brute force against all of us. They rely on our sheepish subjection. They try to dazzle and distract us with wars and space programs, and work secretly to grow their power. | | Al Qaradawi on Violent Jihad and Revolts Against Governments | | 2008-02-15 14:35:19 | | In a recent appearance al Jazeera, Muslim Brotherhood theologian Yousef al-Qaradawi took an interesting , but not unusual line on violent jihad-it is not wrong, but it is ineffective. In the midst of a discourse on the Caliphate, the need to rotate leaders out of power (and why the Muslim Brotherhood does not, by his own admission, despite the preference of four to six year terms for the leader), al-Qaradawi turns his attention to violent jihad and armed revolution, which I put here as a lengthy...(read more) | | By: An American Warning | | |
| | Hoping That Arab Governments Are Blamed | | 2008-01-28 16:20:53 | | On Wednesday I wrote “Hoping Hamas is Blamed.†It’s pretty obvious now, just as it was then, that Hamas isn’t going to be blamed and Israel’s plan will not succeed. Luckily, a new possible scapegoat has joined the herd – other Arab governments. The predicamentEgypt’s been left with quite a problem; Hamas will not allow the Egyptian government to shutdown the border peacefully. That leaves them with essentially two options. Option number one of the Egyptians is to shut their border with Gaza down by force. The problem with this, in their view, is that it (a) possibly destabilizes the region (b) infuriates relatives of Palestinians in Egypt.Option number two is allowing continued free passage between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. This would upset Israel and the U.S. As well, it could draw the ire of many Egyptians if Gazans become perceived as unwelcome guests.A new scapegoatUnless Gazans point their fingers at Hamas in retaliation for their poor situation, there is another grou | | By: Thoughts on the World | | |
