    Web Grades: Iowa Senate
    2008-07-31 17:54:25
Today, we examined campaign websites from the Iowa Senate contest pitting Democratic Senator Tom Harkin against Republican challenger Chris Reed. Remember that with these web grades we are not reviewing the candidates or their political positions, but rather their web outreach. Let us know what you think. How would you have graded them? And don't forget to check out our previous web grades as well.Tom Harkin (tomharkin.com)Harkin's entry page isn't flashy--the look is kind of bland and the design feels a little dated. There is a message from the candidate about a recent "Building Blue" contest and links to the latest blog and news entries. The side column includes the "Action Center," which features links to contribute, volunteer, and tell a friend about the site. There is a schedule posted linking users to an Eventful page with more details, but only two campaign events are currently posted. The home page allows visitors to join the campaign's email list or jump over to several so

    Your college grades suck?
    2008-07-19 06:08:06
I am lucky to have finished college with grades all aced. Although others may not regard it as luck but hard work and determination, I really would say it is the former. Fortunately, I graduated cum laude: I didn't expect it but I prayed for it. I had a grade which I thought would de-list me from being a cum laude. If I graduated merit-less, I still would have accepted it, as I was really lazy [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

Ford receives highest grades on ERI automotive industry report card
    2008-07-17 08:52:00
DEARBORN, Mich. -- The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) announced today that Ford Motor Company once again received one of the highest grades awarded on the Economic Reciprocity Initiative (ERI) automotive industry report card. Results of the study were released at the NAACP's 99th Annual Convention, themed Power, Justice, Freedom & The Vote, at the Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati, OH.The NAACP ERI report card measures the exchange of economic costs and benefits between African-American consumers and various industries. The scoring is based on activities in employment, advertising/marketing, procurement/vendor relationships, dealerships, and charitable/philanthropic activity."This is an exciting time for Ford to receive this recognition from the NAACP as we continue to show a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, even during these challenging times for the automotive industry," said Jim Vella, president, Ford Motor Company Fund and Community S

    Web Grades: Idaho Senate
    2008-07-09 12:55:14
Today, we examined campaign websites from the Idaho Senate race pitting Republican Lieutenant Governor Jim Risch against former Democratic Congressman Larry LaRocco. Remember that with these web grades we are not reviewing the candidates or their political positions, but rather their web outreach. Let us know what you think. How would you have graded them? And don't forget to check out our previous web grades as well.Jim Risch (risch4idaho.com)One of the annoying splash pages greets visitors, but that is easily bypassed. The main page has a relatively modern and professional look with a pleasant color scheme, though it seems like they could have included a little more here. There is a video greeting from the candidate (it plays every time you click back to the home page) is oddly cropped and should be set to play only once. Risch's biography includes three photos, but is really pretty standard. Users will find the issues section a big disappointment. The candidate touches on jus

    Web Grades: Georgia Senate
    2008-07-02 15:58:47
Today, we examined campaign websites from the Georgia Senate race pitting Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss against five potential Democratic challengers--Dale Cardwell, Vernon Jones, Rand Knight, Josh Lanier, and Jim Martin. Remember that with these web grades we are not reviewing the candidates or their political positions, but rather their web outreach. Don't forget to check out our previous web grades as well.Saxby Chambliss (saxby.org)Chambliss went with the obvious red, white, and blue color palette, while the layout of his site is rather unusual. The main page is loaded with videos that touch on various issues or cover recent campaign events. The biography page is fairly detailed and also includes a section about his wife, Julianne. In the news section, users can search through an archive of campaign releases that date back more than a year or check out media coverage. There is no specific issue section, rather the candidate has outlined his views in various video posts.

    Web Grades: Colorado Senate

Today, we examined campaign websites from the Colorado Senate race pitting Democratic Congressman Mark Udall against former House Republican Bob Schaffer. Don't forget to check out our previous web grades as well.Mark Udall (markudall.com)The Udall campaign breaks with the standard red, white, and blue motif, opting for a somewhat bland tan palette. The site has a modern look and feel that includes all the relevant features we're looking for. Viewers are greeted with a rotating series of images and links on the main page, which also includes links to the latest blog posts, campaign videos, and upcoming events. The biography section includes Udall's personal history as well a page touting his bipartisan record in Congress. The issues section is very impressive. Udall writes at length on 23 topics, including information on relevant past votes as well as future plans. The news section is hidden somewhat under the "About Mark" heading and the archive of campaign releases is rather limi

Today, we examined campaign websites from the Delaware Senate race pitting Democratic incumbent Joe Biden against Republican challenger Christine O'Donnell. Don't forget to check out our previous web grades as well.Joe Biden (joebiden.com)Biden's site hasn't changed much since he abandoned his presidential bid earlier this year, though it has become much more Delaware-centric. It has a modern look and feel, if not one that is becoming rather common. The biography section is has the expected information as well as a section of praise from media sources. The site's issues platform is strong, with the candidate writing at length on 16 topics. The news section contains press releases and links to media coverage, though the offerings are limited.User interaction isn't a high point. The site has no campaign blog or schedule of events. The multimedia section, however, is strong. The campaign has a ton of videos posted on its YouTube page (those videos are also on the site itself), though

    Web Grades: Arkansas Senate

Today, we examined campaign websites from the Arkansas Senate race in which Democratic Senator Mark Pryor is running without Republican opposition.Mark Pryor (pryor2008.com)Pryor's site has a relatively modern look, though his campaign logo is about as boring as they come. The main page includes a rotating series of images and links to news stories. Visitors should be able to browse the site with ease and quickness. Pryor's biography page is nothing special, but it does include several family photos. The news section contains links to relative media articles and users are allowed to subscribe to the campaign's news feed, though the feed links were working properly when I tried them. The real strength of the site is Pryor's issues section, which includes detailed analysis of more than 20 topics. User interaction is relatively limited. The action center does have all the relevant links--contributions, volunteering, mailing list sign-up, and voter registration. We couldn't find any

Today, we examined campaign websites from the Alaska Senate race pitting Republican incumbent Ted Stevens against Democratic Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich.Ted Stevens (tedstevens2008.com)The site's layout is rather bland and simplistic. The biography page is standard, but does offer a lot of information and pictures. The news section has more than 20 pages of links to various articles that talk about Stevens or the 2008 race, though there is no section for campaign press releases. Stevens addresses more than 20 topics in his issues section--ironically, the most detailed being a defense of earmarks. The site also has a page where users can share stories about the senator, but none were posted as of this visit. The action center invites users to sign up, volunteer, tell a friend, or contribute to the campaign. Visitors are also provided links to newspapers throughout the state to send letters to the editor in support of Stevens. Still, voter interaction is limited. While the campaign o

    Web Grades: Alabama Senate
    2008-06-21 23:51:31
About a year ago we graded the websites of the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates. While races probably aren't won or lost based on tech savvy, campaign websites have become an integral part of the 21st Century political game. Thus, over the next few weeks and months we will be grading the campaign websites of Senate and gubernatorial candidates across the country.Today, we examined campaign websites from the Alabama Senate race pitting Republican incumbent Jeff Sessions against Democratic state Senator Vivian Figures.Jeff Sessions (jeffsessions.com)The layout of the Sessions page is reminiscent of Barack Obama's campaign website. It's an appealing, though fairly bland, look that is easy and quick to navigate (bonus points for no annoying splash page). The biography page is fairly standard, but does include a welcome video and a family photo album. The news page provides press releases, campaign updates, and links to any other media coverage (the first two are update

2008 NFL Draft Grades: The AFC
    2008-05-12 17:36:19
The 2008 NFL Draft Winners and Losers: THE AFC DRAFT REVIEWBy Rick Weaver: Carolina Panthers NFL ColumnistKANSAS CITY CHIEFS "A+"WINNERThe Kansas City Chiefs had multiple needs going into draft day and they had 13 picks to work with. Thanks to a deal with the Minnesota Vikings the Chiefs traded away pro-bowl defensive end Jared Allen and received the Vikings 1st round, 17th pick overall and they got both of the Vikings 3rd round picks, plus the teams swapped their draft positions in the 6th round. Allen was statistically the best defensive end in the NFL last year with 15 1/2 sacks while playing in only 14 games. Allen was one of the bright spots on a team that was reportedly "rebuilding" last season. Allen had made rumblings about being unhappy in Kansas City as he had "issues" with the team's management. The Chiefs already had an unhappy fan base after posting just 4 wins last season and trading their "best" player only made matters worse. If General Manager, Carl Peterson, was wanti

    2008 NFL Draft Grades

Draft Winners and Losers (A Second Opinion)By Patrick LuoWinners:Kansas City Chiefs: (A+) Glenn Dorsey, Branden Albert, Brandon Flowers, Jamaal Charles, Brad Cottam, DaJuan Morgan, William Franklin, Brandon Carry, Barry Richardson, Kevin Robinson, Brian Johnston, Mike MerrittIn terms of just the draft, they easily had the best one. If you consider the fact that they had to give up Jared Allen for a lot of the picks, not so much. But they still had the best draft. Getting the 2nd best defensive prospect (in my opinion), Glenn Dorsey, with the 5th pick is huge. They still addressed their offensive line issues with Branden Albert, easily the top guard in this draft class. They also drafted Barry Richardson from Clemson, great value for a 6th round pick. Cottam was a good pick in the 3rd, maybe a slight reach, but he’s still the best blocking tight end in the draft. DaJuan Morgan, arguably the 2nd best overall free safety in this draft, was a good value pick in the 3rd. Brandon Flowers w

    Final grades for the Giants
    2008-02-10 06:35:04
It has been a week now since the Giants defeated New England to win Super Bowl XLII. That's long enough, I think, for me to look back and try to grade the Giants' roster without being overly emotional. So, let's do that. Let's try to grade the Giants, position-by-position. Head Coach Tom Coughlin had the magic touch all year. Forming a leadership council to get player input, taking the team bowling during training camp to build camaraderie, showing the team the softer side of his personality. None of that change could have been easy for the hard-nosded, 61-year-old curmudgeonly coach. But it helped build a team that believed in each other and played hard for him. TC also had the magic touch the last several weeks, playing to win in the regular-season finale against the Patriots and leading a team no one else believed in to a Super Bowl title. Grade: A+ Offense Offensive Coordinator: He provided a tremendous improvement over the departed John Hufnagel, but there were stil

New Year's Goal Setting and Math Add Up to Higher Grades for Students!
    2007-12-29 07:30:00
by: Susan JaremaTeaching math is one of the greatest ways to instill valuable goal-setting skills while ensuring academic success. Math provides the perfect opportunity for goal-setting lessons: its aims are realistic, obtainable, measurable and can be broken down into smaller goals or tasks. Developing goal-setting skills will help students learn how to manage their time, make better decisions and take ownership of their own academic progress.Unfortunately, most students never learn goal-setting techniques until after they have left school. But this need not be the case. Young children can start off by setting small goals to learn simple math facts, just as they learned their ABCs. For many students, their first daunting academic goal might be memorizing the times tables. Older students can set goals to improve their grades, learn new concepts or even go back to strengthen mental math skills. You want your child's first serious goal-setting experience to be a successful one. Understand

Jaguars DEFEAT Raiders: Post Game Grades
    2007-12-23 17:14:38
Here are Freek's Post-Game Grades! First before I get to the grades I want to hand out a "Dumbass Player of the Game Award" to.... None other than... Warren Sapp. I do not know what the hell was going through his mind today, but this was the end all and be all of his career today.  Being ejected from any game is BAD, but being EJECTED from a game that means nothing to your team is an outright mind-blower!  Three unsportsmanlike Conduct penalties back to back after a single play has got to be an all time meltdown of Nuclear proportions.  I can't wait to hear his justifications of his actions...I hope the league fines and suspends him. Passing Offense- A  Another dominant performance by the Offensive Line and Quarterback David Garrard. 13 passing first down and 7-11 on third down conversion.  The Offense never even put us in a position to have to convert a 4th down play.  A whopping 437 yds of offense. They didn't get an A+ because of 2 sacks allowed. Rus

My Grades For Fall 2007 at UCSC (so far)
    2007-12-22 21:35:00
In case anyone cares I thought I'd mentioned my grades thus far for last quarter. I'm just waiting in one more grade, which I think is a B or B+, or somewhere around there.Modern German Fiction w/ Theo Honnef: AIntro to Musical Drama (Opera) w/ Dan Seldon: A+(The + is actually meaningless unless you want to be "valid Victorian", as I call it. Since I have no desire to be that I'm just glad it was an A)A note on both classes. I really enjoyed German Fiction. I'm keeping several of the books from it because I quite enjoyed them. Intro to Musical Drama really helped me develop a taste for opera. I'm quite fond of a few operas now and have actually seen a live opera, which was awesome. I learned quite a lot about the depth of the musical genre and even a little about the history of music and my sneaking suspicion that someone was behind the destruction of classical music, leading to the massive popularity of crap. Well, that's a little harsh. There's certainly so good older music, but you get the point. So just waiting on one more (Literary Interpretation). I'm rather surprised I did so well to be honest. The two courses I have been graded on are upper division, so to get such a high grade is a good thing. It really wasn't all that challenging though.(Don't click the read more, there isn't any more after this!)

College Football Coaching Changes: What are the grades?
    2007-11-27 20:45:00
While the college football season is not officially over just yet, plenty of schools nationwide are already firing their head coaches. In some cases, I praise athletic directors for getting rid of a coach that has overstayed his welcome. On the other hand, some coaches should still be leading their football teams. Here are my grades on the coaches firing.Washington State: Bill Doba; Grade B+It's always sad to see a class act guy like Doba step down as head coach but over the past few seasons it has been increasingly clear that his time has passed. Washington State has failed to reach a bowl game since 2003. Pullman has always been a tough place to win but winning six or seven games over a four to five period run is not too much to ask for. This is a good move for both Doba and Washington State as it will allow the Cougars to return back to respectability.Texas A&M: Dennis Franchione; Grade A-Whatever happened to the dominant Texas A&M football teams that we used to see decades

Competetion & Grades do nothing but Label Children
    2007-06-12 12:42:00
Competition & Grades do nothing but Label Kids at to early of an ageI have said it before one must have Cooperation (Fundamentals) before one can Compete effectively. In sports many say you must have competitions to know who are the best players. I say I have coached many sports and the best will still rise to the top without labeling others failures. I wonder how many potential players give up sports and education at an early age because they may not be physically or mentally developed to compete with peers at an early age.Without demeaning the kids there would be better players all the way around on the team and there would be little difference between 1st and second stringers instead of the wide gap that exists today (i.e., can only go a few players deep on the bench). In too many instances children are labeled at an early age and it sticks with them all through their school years. I was at a Basketball Skills Camp last week for 5th and 6th grade children. While they had individual wi

Just starting to blossom in Texans 3-4 when they switched to 4-3. Great upside. Grade: B+.Robaire Smith--DT/DE--Another casualty of the Texans switch to a 4-3. Should provide an upgrade over Alvin McKinley on the line. Grade: B+.Seth McKinney--C/G--After missing a year due to injury, not sure what level he be playing at, but may challenge for a starting spot, or at the least will serve as a versatile backup capable of playing any of the interior line positions. Grade: B.Shaun Smith--DT/NT--A career backup for the Bengals, Smith has good size & youth. Browns hoping that after a year learning from Ted Washington, he will be ready to start. Browns taking a gamble, but there is good upside and very little risk. Grade: B.Jamal Lewis--RB--I've had a hard time with this one. I've disliked Lewis for

Browns FA Grades, Part 1--Who's gone
    2007-03-27 04:44:00
Since most of the big free agency action is likely over, I thought I'd give my own grades on how the Browns have done. First up, who Cleveland didn't resign.**Free agents lost: S Brian Russell (Seattle), WR Dennis Northcutt (Jacksonville), DE Alvin McKinley (Denver). While Jones and Pool bring more athleticism to the safety positions than Russell, the Browns will miss his leadership in the secondary. Plus, he is responsible for one of the best hits of the reborn Browns, when he nearly knocked Chad Johnson's head off. Dennis Northcutt is still one of the most dangerous punt returners in the league, but as a WR he drops too many passes, and overall is not worth nearly what the Jaguars are paying him. McKinley is better suited as a situational backup than a full-time starter. He likely won't be missed. GRADE: B. Would be an A if they had kept Russell.**Status unresolved: CB Ralph Brown, G Cosey Coleman, DE Nick Eason, T Nat Dorsey, DT Ethan Kelley, LB Mason Unck. Brown and Do
