    Particles of Grammar
    2008-08-24 11:32:39
I was considering tag questions, today, and wondering how they would be classed in terms of the parts of speech. Much to my surprise, I discovered that linguists consider them to be particles. Naturally, I had to learn more. Grammarians identify uninflected words that explain the grammatical purpose of other words. The lack of inflection sets particles apart from other parts of speech. They lack the ability to indicate number, gender, tense, or person. Thus "the" operates as a particle... Read the full post at One Step Forward.

    Another Grammar Resource
    2008-07-26 17:45:53
I uncovered a new and fascinating resource, today. Daniel Kies at the College of DuPage has compiled and generously shared an entire set of books for his English students at various levels. Not only does Mr. Kies tackle such complications as the adverbial “but” and clausal ambiguity, but has posted a lengthy exploration of the necessity (or lack thereof) for a comma after an introductory phrase or clause. The site labels this as the first tip of the week, but I was unable to find a... Read the full post at One Step Forward.

    A Personal Grammar Rant
    2008-07-05 08:30:32
I've not written about the importance of grammar and writing style for quite some time. Today I felt essentially slapped in the face by someone who wrote that people only care about such things because they live too-complacent lives in which they have no larger concerns. I beg to differ. I care about my grammar and how I use words because I cannot clearly express myself without them. An incoherent rant acts to reinforce someone's negative impression of your point of view, rather than... Read the full post at One Step Forward.

Here is something I have been meaning to share. I actually just discovered that having a word processing software helps with correcting my spelling and grammar. The Top Ten Thing You Should Know About Grammar
    2008-03-08 08:19:59
I'm with this thing concerning the improvement of the grammars of your peers. Even if they don't, it's your choice to take responsibility of informing them of trivial nitty grits such as the one below. This BTW is taken from here. 10. A run-on sentence is a really long sentence. Wrong! They can actually be quite short. In a run-on sentence, independent clauses are squished together without the help of punctuation or a conjunction. If you write I am happy I am glad as one sentence without a semicolon, colon, or dash between the two independent clauses, it's a run-on sentence even though it only has six words. (See episode 49 for more details.) 9. You shouldn't start a sentence with the word however. Wrong! It's fine to start a sentence with however so long as you use a comma after it when it means "nevertheless." (See episode 58 for more details.) 8. Irregardless is not a word. Wrong! Irregardless is a word in the same way ain't is a word. They're informal. They're nonstandard. You sh

The importance of grammar for the physician CV and cover letter
    2008-02-19 20:36:00
Recently I received an email solicitation from a company that I know to be a successful, profitable organization. The email went on and on about why I should employ their services. It touted their past success rates, excellent promotions, etc. But I could only focus on one thing: The name of the company was misspelled in several places throughout the email. I couldn’t believe that an error this grievous had slipped through, but there it was. And because of it, I lost a lot of respect for this organization, despite all the impressive facts and figures they threw at me.If the most intelligent, accomplished physician in the world can’t present a well-written CV and cover letter, none of the accolades will mean much to prospective employers. Remember that the employer reading the resume probably doesn’t know anything about this doctor except for what he/she sees on paper. Friends and colleagues might overlook a sloppy email because they know the physician is a brilliant surgeon or in

One day, during a lesson on proper grammar, the teacher asked the class for a show of hands from thosewho could use the word "beautiful" in the same sentence twice. First, she called on Little Lisa, who responded with,"My father bought my mother a beautiful dress and she looked beautiful in it." "Very good, Lisa," replied the teacher. She then called on Little Tommy. "My mommy planned a beautiful banquet and it turned out beautifully," he said."Excellent, Michael!" Then, the teacher called on Little Johnny...Last night, during supper, my sister told my father that she was pregnant, and he said,"Beautiful, just f*%@# beautiful !"*******

Rules that Help Govern the Rules of Grammar..OK :P
    2008-01-03 13:20:05
“There are rules of use without which the rules of grammar would be useless”. -Dell Hymes Dell Hymes refers this as what constitutes a familiar and the sentence as a whole is grammatical, whereby the sentence does not make any sense because it is beyond grammatical accuracy.Eeerr…Now I know why I did not major in the English language.Lol.This quote is used in Hymes’ theory of communicative competence as developed in his paper "On Communicative Competence" (1971) to critically examine the implications it had for the field of foreign and second language teaching. The rules that help govern the rules of grammar.Basically, just learn to speak & write with the proper grammar. ;)

    Posts rejected for wrong grammar...
    2007-06-30 01:53:00
I signed up to blog for review me, and all I got was get rejected over and over for my wrong grammar and spelling. Boy, aren't they asking too much, especially from someone like me who is not exactly very fluent in English. I think that with their kind of requirements, the only posties they are going to get are those that have gone to school to learn English, and those that were born speaking English. Because I am certainly not qualified, and now, I am apprehensive about taking anymore offers. I wish I took some time to study English because I am falling behind.
