| Gene Doping: Wrong for Beijing Olympic Athletes but Right for Your Grandchildren? | | 2008-08-07 01:14:00 | | By Andrea UseemHere’s a peek at the Summer Olympics of the future: a swimmer racing with genetically lengthened arms, artificially widened nostrils (for more efficient breathing), and surgically enlarged webbing between his fingers. Sounds scary, right? Not to Andy Miah, who teaches bioethics at the University of the West of Scotland and outlined this exact scenario in a Washington Post op-ed this past Sunday, calling it “only natural.”Enhancing ourselves is only human, Miah argues. After all, the early Greeks ate mushrooms to improve their sports prowess. “We need to abolish our current anti-doping rules and embrace a performance policy that recognizes the merit of using human enhancements,” writes Miah. He thinks this should include the newest form of enhancement, gene doping, which uses cells or genes to improve athletic performance. | | Grandchildren | | 2008-05-08 17:51:00 | | Grandchildren are said to be all play and no work. "Send em' home when they get cranky", is how the saying goes. However, grandparent's should not miss out on the opportunity presented to them. They are not expected to discipline their grandchildren and this opens up an avenue for a different kind of relationship. Grandchildren often rely on their grandparents when thing are tense at home. Parents often rely on their parents to help raise their children in this confusing and complex world.source... | | By: Vision, Adventures, Dreams and Life | | |

| More Grandchildren Humor | | 2007-06-30 19:29:00 | | Another sample of grandparent and grandchildren stories:
A grandmother was observing her granddaughter, Sarah, who was drawing with her crayons. The grandmother could plainly see that the young child was hard at work.
As little Sarah was working diligently, the grandmother asked her what she was drawing.
Sarah replied, “I'm drawing God.”
The grandmother paused, saying, “But, Sarah darling, no... | | By: McCafferty's Pub
| | A passbook account for the grandchildren | | 2007-05-27 13:26:07 | | My parents were asking for a passbook account for their grandchildren as they aren’t keen on card based accounts.
Almost all accounts these days are card or internet based and the initial couple that I came across weren’t great as the building societies concerned didn’t have that many branches. Finally, I settled on the National Savings Investment Account which only requires a £20 deposit to open and also pays interest gross at quite a reasonable rate.
Opening it is a little peculiar as the Post Office branch doesn’t ask for any proof of ID or address and instead National Savings do the whole lot electronically. That worried me a little as I wasn’t sure that we’d turn up on their records but the books have arrived so we must do. Even stranger though is that they didn’t ask for any proof of ID from the children (normally you’re asked for a birth certificate) and one of ours was born in France so I can’t seem him appearing on any UK ... | | By: Foreign Perspectives
| | More About Grandchildren and Grandparents | | 2007-05-02 15:25:00 | | Sometimes grandparents and grandchildren can add so much to our lives. Here are some precious quotes from grandchildren:
A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like.
"In the winter, we used to skate outside on a pond. In the summer, we had a swing made from an automobile tire. My dad, who was your great grandfather, hung it from a tree in our back yard."... | | By: McCafferty's Pub

| Grandchildren humor is the best humor | | 2007-04-24 01:07:00 | | My adorable little grandson surprised me, his grandmother, early one morning with a cup of piping hot coffee. He had brewed it himself, and he was so very proud of his creation. So, naturally, he anxiously awaited my verdict on its quality.
It had to be one of the worst cups of coffee I had ever had in my life. However, I was determined not to let him know that and I forced myself to drink it... | | By: McCafferty's Pub
| | | Epigenetics: Mother's Diet during Pregnancy can affect Grandchildren | | 2006-11-14 14:38:10 | | [This post also appears in the General Evolution News category]Oakland, California: A new study by scientists at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) is the first to show that a mother's diet during pregnancy influences the health of her grandchildren by changing the behavior of a specific gene. The study was conducted using mice of an unique strain called 'viable yellow agouti' also known as A-vy in scientific terms. These mice possesss a gene that influences the color of their coats as well as their tendency to become obese and develop diabetes and cancer. The new research shows that the diet consumed by a pregnant Avy mouse affects the health of not only her pups, but also their pups - her grandchildren. The study will be published in the November issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and was conducted by CHORI Scientist David Martin, M.D., and Assistant Scientist Kenneth Beckman, Ph.D., in collaboration with Drs. Jennifer Cropley and Catherine Suter from the Victor Chang Heart Institute in Sydney, Australia. In their experiments, the scientists fed some Avy mice a standard lab diet based on common foods consumed by humans. Other mice were fed this same diet supplemented with common nutritional supplements including folate, choline, betaine, vitamin B12, zinc and methionine. The supplements were fed to the mice for a week during mid-pregnancy. The offspring were examined for their coat color, and female offspring were themselves mated again (without a supplemented diet) to produce a third generation of 'grandchildren.' The results showed that the supplements changed the behavior of the agouti gene in the first generation of pups, shifting their coats towards a brown color, and had the same effect on pups born in the next generation to mice that were not exposed to the supplemented diet.Continued at "Epigenetics: Mother's Diet during Pregnancy can affect Grandchildren" [Evolution, Science]------- Based on the P... | | By: Evolution Research - Main Blog | | |
