| | Greenpeace: Game Consoles Still Too Toxic | | 2008-05-24 17:59:00 | | Game consoles are one of the fastest growing segments of the electronics industry, so reducing the level of toxic components in the machines should be a top priority of manufacturers, the environmental group Greenpeace charged in a report released this week.
Such game machines as Nintendo’s Wii, Microsoft’s XBox 360 and Sony’s Playstation 3 Elite contain [...]

| | Greenpeace Onslaught(er) - Parody Commercial of Dove Onslaught | | 2008-04-22 13:01:38 | | Back in October 2007, I had blogged about Dove’s ‘Onslaught’ commercial. While I apprehensive about the true intentions behind the commercial, I did appreciate the fact that the ad had the potential to get parents talking to their teenage daughters.
Unfortunately, Greenpeace has claimed that Unilever, Dove’s parent company, is the biggest buyer of palm oil in the world, and thus is indirectly responsible for the fast depleting forest cover in Indonesia. And how is that possible, you might ask ? Well, watch this video to find out.
Visit the official site of Greenpeace to sign an open letter to make Unilever stop the destruction of Indonesia’s beautiful forests.

| Nintendo nonresponsive to Greenpeace | | 2008-04-09 20:38:00 | | In an interview with Gamasutra, Greenpeace's Zeina Al-Hajj discussed the relative greenness of the major consoles and their companies. Nintendo still manages to rate below Sony and Microsoft despite having a console that uses far less electricity and standard (and thus more easily recyclable) parts. The reason? Nintendo has no stated policy about hardware recycling. Both Sony and Microsoft have made efforts in that area, but Nintendo has said absolutely nothing about the disposal of old consoles. "What is available right now," Al-Hajj said, "is that Nintendo is committed to the environment, so they recycle in their offices. Okay. Good work guys, but that's not the issue. The issue is the responsibility to their product."Nintendo is the only console manufacturer out of the three not to engage in communication with Greenpeace. Al-Hajj said that they have attempted conversation with the company multiple times, while both Sony and Microsoft are already in talks. We know that the first | | By: Online Games | | |
| | Ban the Bulb - Gandhigiri, Greenpeace style! | | 2008-02-21 10:52:01 | | Greenpeace’s Ban the Bulb campaign has been around for sometime now. The demand for a complete ban on incandecent light bulbs and a switchover to Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) has had mixed reactions so far. Though, there is no denying that since 95% of the energy used by an incandescent bulb is wasted as heat making it [...] | | By: Delhi Greens | | |
| | U.S. Navy Donates F-14 Fighters to Greenpeace | | 2008-01-07 08:44:00 | | CWT - San Francisco. A confidential source inside the Greenpeace environmental protection organization revealed to Cats With Thumbs the United States Navy will donate 6 recently decommissioned Grumman F-14 Tomcat multi-role strike fighter aircraft to help Greenpeace upgrade their whaling interdiction and self defense capabilities. A highly placed Greenpeace operative, speaking off the record, told CWT: "This will change our entire environmental defense paradigm - we've been taking it on the chin from the fishing conglomerates for years; it's a whole new ball game now." The U.S. Navy Public Affairs Office at Patuxent River, MD. refused to comment when contacted for verification by Cats With Thumbs. A U.S. Navy Captain involved with the final F-14 decommissioning spoke with CWT on condition his name be withheld: "It's a hell of an aircraft - Greenpeace is getting one of the finest supersonic strike platforms ever developed. I'm pretty sure any fishing fleet will get the message once | | By: Cats With Thumbs | | |

| | | Greenpeace Fails Game Industry | | 2007-11-29 10:08:00 | | Game console makers may be making millions of gamers happy, but environmental watchdog Greenpeace is giving the industry dismal scores.Greenpeace on Monday issued its quarterly "Guide to Greener Electronics," which ranks consumer electronics manufacturers and their policies regarding toxic chemicals and recycling. At the bottom of the heap are Nintendo, Philips, and Microsoft.Nintendo has the distinction of being the first global brand to score zero on Greenpeace's criteria in the quarterly report, which for the first time includes televisions and game consoles.Nintendo managed that by scoring zero in the five categories related to the use of harmful chemicals, including offering no list of banned or restricted substances and no policy regarding the use of vinyl plastic or brominated flame retardants. It also scored zero in the four categories related to recycling.Part of Nintendo's poor score stems from lack of available information. | | By: iPhone in france | | |
| | Greenpeace warning about iPhone | | 2007-10-16 09:15:00 | | According to a statement on Greenpeace's Web site,"An independent scientific laboratory tested 18 internal and external components of the iPhone and confirmed the presence of brominated compounds in half the samples, including in the phone's antenna, in which they made up 10% of the total weight of the flexible circuit board.A mixture of toxic phthalates was found to make up 1.5% of the plastic (PVC) coating of the headphone cables.” As per Greenpeace Research Laboratories, two of the phthalate plasticisers are classed in Europe as “toxic to reproduction, Category 2” because they can interfere with sexual reproduction in mammals. They have called on Apple to eliminate the use of these chemicals in its products. And also the Greenpeace testers found that phone’s battery was glued and soldered in place. “This hinders battery replacement and makes separation for recycling, or appropriate disposal, more difficult, and therefore adds to the burden of electronic waste.”Now is, Apple coming under the Chinese influence or it is their own stupidity that they did not care about it. But it is definitely, going to hurt them unless they correct is soon. | | By: Science & Technology Today | | |
| | Greenpeace Urges Indonesia to Stop Forest Destruction | | 2007-10-10 07:33:00 | | Indonesia must stop the destruction of its rainforests and commit to a moratorium on conversion of peat swamp forests into farmland, Greenpeace said on Tuesday.Indonesia had the fastest pace of deforestation in the world between 2000-2005, destroying an area of forest the size of 300 soccer pitches every hour, according to the environment group. The Greenpeace appeal came ahead of a UN climate change summit in December, where participants from 189 countries are expected to gather in Bali to discuss a new deal to fight global warming. The existing pact, the Kyoto Protocol, runs out in 2012.

As a younger man, I was a big fan of Greenpeace.
As time went on, I thought they lost their focus by branching out from protesting nuclear weapons to whaling and trees and basically hanging out a shingle that said, "If you send us money, we will protest for you."
I watched them change from instilling their people with scientific literacy to educating their | | By: Science And Supermodels | | |
