Pearl Jam Guitarist - Mike McCready New Crohn's Disease Benefit Concert
    2008-04-11 11:04:00
The Pearl Jam benefit concert will be held Thursday, July 20th at 8 p.m. at Portland's Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. In 2002, Pearl Jam guitarist, Mike McCready made public his 20-year battle with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and has since been committed to raising awareness about the disease, which can cause abdominal pain, fever and weight loss that can disrupt peoples' lives. The benefit concert will take this subject, typically thought to be too delicate to discuss in public, out of the shadows and into the spotlight. McCready has been a spokesperson for the NW Chapter of CCFA and is also featured in a radio Public Service Announcement (PSA) released in January for the organization. The concert will benefit CCFA's search for a cure."Having struggled with Crohn's disease for more than 20 years and experienced first hand difficulties in getting a diagnosis and treatment, I want to help others learn about the disease, how it is affecting them and how to find ways to cope," s

Bon Jovi guitarist DUI. Livin' on a prayer, plus, a salute to the 5 Worst Bon Jovi Cover Versions of All Time!
    2008-04-02 10:20:56
In the spirit of kickin' 'em when they're down, we thought we'd lace 'em up and give a solid punt to the arse of everyone's favorite crap-rock poster boys, Bon Jovi in this, another of our 'music and booze-themed' postings.'Jovi Guitarist Ritchie Sambora, pictured here, and looking in decidedly poorer shape than ex-squeeze Heather Lochlear was recently arrested for DUI in Laguna Beach California. So, to honor the band, and also in the spirit of celebrating the worst of everything, we've decided to put together a tribute, of sorts, to Bon Jovi, the world’s most famous Bruce Springsteen tribute band.Early on in their career as Bruce, they discovered that their slice of the bar receipts pie was wafer thin (to mix food metaphors) and that they should ditch their E Street Band and streamline their line-up to the dismal arena wimp-rock quartet that you see today. This was after the unceremonious booting of bass player Alec John Such, because he ‘couldn’t play his instrument’—a requ

    Guide for drop tuner guitarist
    2008-03-14 06:58:09
Most of modern metal bands today prefer to tune down the guitar to drop D, C or B tuning to get more bottom and heavier sound. But without proper setup on your guitar and amp, your guitar will produce dull & muddy sound. For drop C tuning, I prefer 10-52 gauge. If you're using smaller gauge, the strings will vibrate heavily and resulting in poor notes definition.First of all, you have to change the guitar string gauge. For drop C tuning, I prefer 10-52 gauge. If you're using smaller gauge, the strings will vibrate heavily and resulting in poor notes definition. It also suggested for you to send the guitar to professional guitar tech to re-setup the guitar after you change the string gauge.Next, if you can afford to change your guitar pickup, replace the pickup to the pickup that specially designed for drop tuner. You must also know that when playing with bigger string gauge and drop tune, it will produce more bassy sound. So you have to play around with your guitar amp EQ by cutting

Quick Overview On The Legendary Guitarist - Jimi Hendrix
    2008-01-10 08:26:26
Who would have thought that a self-taught musician who, as a boy, wanted a guitar so desperately he made one out of a broom before acquiring a one-stringed ukulele, would eventually be hailed by many as one of the greatest and most influential guitarists in rock music history?Jimi Hendrix, born in 1942, served in the US army as a paratrooper in his youth.Having taught himself the guitar, he played the US' 'Chitlin Circuit' of clubs before moving to New York, earning a spot as the new guitarist for the The Isley Brothers' band before joining Little Richard's back-up band and others. On moving to London in 1966, he formed a trio - The Jimi Hendrix Experience - which gained rapid popularity in Europe.Jimi became known for entertaining showmanship, which sometimes included setting his guitar on fire! With a landmark appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and huge success of album 'Are You Experienced?' Jimi became a world-wide star.Hendrix was the headline artist at the 1969 Woodstock Festival, where he played his controversial war-like fuzz-guitar version of 'The Star-Spangled Banner'.Jimi Hendrix died at the age of 27 in 1970, having recorded only three fully-conceived studio albums and more than 300 unreleased recordings. With his unique style of playing guitars upside down ('left-handed') and restrung to suit him, Hendrix is credited with taking the electric guitar to a higher level.Hendrix aimed to mix what he called 'earth', a blues, jazz, or funk driven rhythm accompaniment, with 'space', the high-pitched psychedelic sounds he improvised on his guitar.Hendrix played a key role in making the Fender Stratocaster the biggest-selling electric guitar in history and making popular the use of guitar distortion using effects pedals, including the wah-wah pedal, and units. He pioneered in the recording studio, experimenting with stereophonic and phasing effects. With his albums among the most influential of the 1960s, Jimi Hendrix changed rock music as

    Finding a Good Guitarist
    2007-11-19 08:51:34
Being a good guitarist takes a lot of effort. And finding one is a much harder task to perform. First of all we need to know what it takes to be known as a good player. There are various qualities and expertise that become imperative to excel in this field. There may be artists who did not have any formal training while learning a guitar. But that does not prove to be a disqualification for the artist who wants to be a good guitarist. Things to look for while finding a good guitarist The guitar is an incredibly versatile instrument, and like the piano, it can play chords, melodies, solos, or help to gel a group. A singer would just want to be able to play basic chords when they are singing. But a professional performer would be someone who would not only analyze the technical side of music but also play music that is much more enjoyable than playing hours of scales that are monotonous and non musical. To find a good performer who can play in public, enjoy his guitar playing and a true

Hey ATOMIC fans. I have a huge announcement. ATOMIC Guitarist may be going communal starting this week, in which anyone can sign up and have a guitar blog. Also, I just wanted to say that talking to myself most of the time has become boring. I like to hear what others have to say about things. If you have any objections, please reply below.

Death Cab's Guitarist Chris Walla Gets a Visit From Homeland Security
    2007-10-17 20:02:48
Monday Chris Walla, Guitarist of Death Cab For Cutie, was paid a visit by homeland security. The government took his computer for no valid reason (actually, they never really gave a clear explanation why). Possibly because the would-have-soon-debuted album called Field Manual sat in the hard drive. "(The New Album) is "very political," packed with songs about issues both foreign ("The Score" tackles the war in Iraq) and domestic ("Everyone Needs a Home" deals with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; "Sing Again" is about so-called "morning after" pills and whether they're a form of contraception or abortion)." -Source: MTV News Chris Walla and Death Cab's music promotes terrorism! I mean, CDs can be dangerous if you sharpen the edges and throw them like frisbees. Great work Homeland Security. I guess freedom of speech isn't the same as the freedom to rock.

    What's Your Guiltiest Pleasure, Guitarist?
    2007-10-17 02:00:20
I haven't been 100% straight with you, ATOMIC fans. This is a blog geared mainly toward new rock, alternative, and punk rock guitarists with hints of classic and underground stuff. This might come as quite a shock. I have a deep, dark, absolutely black secret: I love country music. It's true, as disgusting as it may sound. Some would even call it tragic. I know it sucks. I have no reasonable defense for my taste in country. But I like it anyway. The first ever Country Music Awards will take place on November 7th. (Refrain from spewing...) I'm psyched ATOMIC fans. So why do I like what most people think is pathetic, ignorant BS? I like the heart-warming southern lyrics, hillbilly ballads, party songs, songs about love and lost, and wild redneck stuff. Yep. The whole nine yards... From Hank Williams Jr, to Garth Brooks, to George Straight, to Johnny Cash, to even Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood. What I also like about the form of music is it's pretty much like rock (in structure), but with hick singers, twang, and another perception on life. There's more melody involved in country than most of the new rock (even though I like new rock a whole lot more). Older rock seems to have a lot more melody than new rock and sometimes I just get sick of "coolness" alone and want to feel something with the heart. Before you bash me, what's styles of music, artists, or bands do you like that everyone hates? Don't be shy. I'm pretty damn brave...

Pearl Jam, Mike McCready (guitarist) and Fans Continue to Fight Crohn's Disease
    2007-09-23 21:40:00
Thought this was an interesting story about a Peal Jam Fan doing something to help fight Crohn's Disease. Peal Jam fan Anthony Piscatella of Troy New York won a Peal Jam contest to host a screening of a Pearl Jam concert film is using the opportunit to raise money to fight Crohn's Disease.Piscatella says he was one of the lucky few chosen on the basis of planning the best screening party, and says he will charge $3 admission to the event and donate the proceeds to a New York City charity, the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation.Piscatella said the disease has not had a direct impact on his life, but he became involved because of his appreciation for the rock band, whose membership has been directly affected by Crohn's."I've been working for the last few weeks on hosting a huge benefit for Cornice's disease because Peal Jam lead guitar player (Mike McCready) has Crohn's disease," Piscatella said Thursday, a day after he got an e-mail informing him he would be one of the lucky hosts.

    Fastest Guitarist Ever Joe Satriani
    2007-09-12 22:46:29
Following #1 Charlie Christian #2 Joe Pass #3 Jimmy Page #4 Wes Montgomery And Number 5... on the ATOMIC Greatest Guitarists of All Time List, the fastest guitarist in the world, the one and only, the stunning, the innovative, the severely skilled: Joe Satriani Uh oh, what did he say? First let me clear up my statement about "Satch" being the fastest guitarist in the world. A lot of shredders out there don't like to give Joe Satriani the credit he deserves because in stead of shredding, he plays one-hand legato style. But... he plays a whole lot of 32nd notes at a blazing speed, which makes him the quickest. It's said the reason he plays legato is because he likes the sound of 32nd notes more than 16th. Joe Satriani is the second rocker on the ATOMIC greatest guitarists list. Why is that? In 1986, Satch became the first purely instrumental rock guitarist to be put in the spotlight. And thus good sir, he has inspired an entire generation of highly-advanced guitarists that

#4... Beloved Jazz Guitarist Wes Montgomery
    2007-09-04 08:00:00
Previously #1 Charlie Christian #2 Joe Pass #3 Jimmy Page #4 on the ATOMIC Greatest Guitarists of All Time List, the beloved... Wes Montgomery Inspired by his Idol Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery took the world by storm in the 50s with innovative guitar techniques and soulful tunes that ultimately led (backfiring) to what we call Smooth Jazz today. Random opinion: Wes Montgomery invented a heartfelt and deep style known as Smooth Jazz, which has been butchered into cheesy, often "elevatory" music. Smooth Jazzers obviously missed the point somewhere in the translation. Don't kill me... Montgomery was well-known for being the first Jazz guitarist to use his thumb instead of a pick. By using his thumb, he was able to express with a variety of tones. Wes Montgomery was also an innovator in that he applied the use of octaves. These rare techniques had such an impact that Montgomery has been one of the most mimicked Jazzers in history. I don't know if there's a direct connect

Greatest Rock Guitarist of All Time Jimmy Page
    2007-09-03 02:59:48
Jimmy Page Rock guitarist Jimmy Page of the Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin is the ATOMIC #3 greatest guitarist of all time (#1 was Charlie Christian, #2 Joe Pass). Why is Jimmy Page the first rock guitarist on this master list? One word: influential. Page's technique of down-stroking chords and power chords influenced the earliest punk rock guitarists like Johnny Ramone and thus, all of Punk Rock and any style of Rock like Alternative and New Rock. Also, Jimmy Page is the greatest Rock guitarist of all time because of his Riff Rock, which still is a key element in Heavy Metal music. You might not know this one. Eddie Van Halen is often credited for being the creator of finger-tapping technique. That was actually Jimmy Page. While Rock guitarist Van Halen may have taken finger tapping to an amazing level, he originally learned it from Page. Furthermore, Jimmy Page was a pioneer in guitar recording techniques doing things no one had ever heard like the effects of putting mics

#1 Greatest Guitarist of All Time Charlie Christian
    2007-09-01 02:36:21
To kick off the ATOMIC 10 Greatest Guitarists of All Time Period... Drum roll please. Charlie Christian Who was Charlie Christian and why is he the greatest guitarist of all time? At 23-years-old Charlie Christian became the most innovative guitarists of his time. In the late 1930s guitars were used as backup instruments because they weren't loud enough. No one had thought about playing guitar as if it were a horn. It was never the lead instrument in a group of musicians. Christian was the greatest guitarist of all time because he started using an amplifier to play loud enough to be the soloist of a group. We have Charlie Christian to credit for the evolution of music on the electric guitar. If it weren't for him, we'd all be listening to horns and I for one would have already blown my head off. Can you imagine a guitarist like Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine playing "Killing in the Name Of" on a saxophone instead of a guitar? Charlie Christian's 1940 "Flying Ho

Bashing the New Smashing Pumpkin Guitarist
    2007-08-16 00:18:38
Burn-out Smashing Pumpkins members Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlan held a 13 minute YouTube Q & A interview yesterday. You got to love the great guitar work from their songs throughout the years, but holy Moses you can tell by the interview that the members of the group aren't hungry at all anymore. Worse, they make me (at least) want to fall asleep. The only good thing about the interview was hearing a little bit about Billy Corgan's setup: Custom-built Strat with Dimarzio pickups Diezel Herbert Amp (German) "Weird Effects Pedals" with German names, so he couldn't pronounce them From what I can tell the Smashing Pumpkins new album "Zeitgeist" has some solid guitar work from newcomer Jeff Schroeder. But not that great... Maybe I'm just in a bad mood today, but I feel the urge to severely rip on one of my all-time favorite bands in this highly one-sided post. SP, I love you/I hate you. A Gifted and Talented Child Already a Rock Star: Guitarist Alex "Raz"
    2007-08-11 16:24:11
Alex "Raz" is a gifted and talented child already a rock star at 9-years-old. In March Raz was discovered playing on the reality show "Finding Julian's Band". Since then he's picked up fans all over the internet at sites like YouTube and Yahoo! VIDEO. Father Steve Raz has been the brains behind the promotion of his rock star child. "I could just tell. I just showed him a little finger exercise, and I could just tell, he picked it up pretty quick" -Alex's Father Alex's first album debuts in October featuring his old buddy from the reality show, 7-year-old singer Vincent Fondale. Alex Raz's influences include guitarists Eddie Van Halen, SRV, Satriani, Slash, and more, so we can expect it to sound like a hybrid of exciting guitar rock. Okay, this gifted child may not seem amazing to few, but let me say this. When I used to teach private guitar lessons, the 9-year-olds I taught could barely press down a string. They had an attention span of a fly. The best and most talented of

    The Ruthless Guitarist
    2005-12-13 18:54:00
We have a weekly farmers market in our town that I love going to. I usually don't stay too long - just however long it takes me to scope out the free samples and grab a few wasabi peanuts from the nut guy. Everytime I have gone for almost two years, there has been a shabby looking old Asian guy with his beat up old guitar, harmonica, and open case for tips, endlessly playing and belting out unrecognizable lyrics.I've never seen anyone actually listen to him because honestly, you feel a little guilty watching him. He is so bad, his voice so hoarse, and the words so unintelligible, that I would feel pity for him - to actually stop and watch would run me the risk of laughing in his face. His guitar is in the most abysmal condition imaginable. You can tell that he's been playing it for all of this lifetime, and probably the past few that he's been through as well.I was at the market last week with Penny - it gets dark pretty early here these days so there wasn't many people there.
