The battle that figures to receive the most attention in Cubs camp is the one for the closer's role, and, whether he admits it or not, Kerry Wood enters the spring as the odds-on favorite.
Wood has built-in incentives in his one-year contract based on games finished. He's apparently injury-free for the first time in years. And he has seniority, with 10 years in a Cubs uniform entering the 2008 season.
"Seems like 30," he said with a laugh.
But Wood doesn't consider himself the front-runner to replace Ryan Dempster and said he's satisfied to compete with Bob Howry and Carlos Marmol.
So let the battle begin, and may the best arm win.
"We're set up for a great bullpen," Wood said. "We have a lot of good arms, so I know the staff and (manager Lou Piniella) will put the right guy in."
