    Hawaii suffers a tourism blow
    2008-06-25 18:04:00
Honolulu (CNN American Morning) -- A balmy breeze gently blows across the beach, with the warm, clear water of the Pacific Ocean just a few feet away. It's a place honeymooners and families go to get away from it all. But these days, things aren't so perfect in paradise. High fuel prices have caused airfares to skyrocket. And the economy has caused some Americans to postpone or downsize their travel plans. Fewer tourists are coming to Hawaii, and some think the problems are only beginning. ATA and Aloha Airlines have already gone bust. And starting next week, two Japanese airlines will increase fuel surcharges on flights to Hawaii by 43%. American Airlines just announced plans to eliminate its Chicago-Honolulu route at the end of the year.

Paradise On Earth - Honolulu, Hawaii
    2008-05-30 01:11:00
Paradise. There is perhaps no other city on the planet to which the word "paradise" accurately can be used as a description of the community. In short, Honolulu truly is paradise on earth. One of the most compelling features of Honolulu is its magnificent climate. The year around, the average high temperature in Honolulu is in the mid-80s. Nearly 400,000 people call Honolulu home today. The performing arts are a major part of the Honolulu cultural scene today. This includes everything from a number to top rated theater venues as well as a highly regarded symphony and opera. Indeed, Honolulu has started to garner international acclaim for its performing arts offerings.Beyond the performing arts, other cultural opportunities in the city include art museums and galleries as well as a natural history museum that focuses on the natural history of the Hawaiian Islands. These museums also trace the social and cultural changes of the islands through the generations. Some of the most important att

Gasoline theft in Hawaii on the rise
    2008-05-28 12:04:00
With the cost of gasoline skyrocketing, thieves in Hawaii -- where the average price easily exceeds $4 per gallon -- have taken extraordinary measures to steal fuel. Only mildly deterred by locking gas caps, bandits have been cutting fuel lines to circumvent the common preventatives. With nothing more than a straight edge blade, a piece of garden hose, and a bucket, the lawless make easy work of the plastic fuel lines under cars as they cut them to gain simple access to the tank and its flammable yet valuable liquid contents. So far, most of the victims have been businesses or commercial ventures with several large trucks in their fleet. Parked unattended in lots overnight, their 20-30 gallon fuel tanks and raised ride height make them easy targets with larger yields than the average passenger vehicle. To deter the theft, business owners have installed sophisticated video surveillance cameras on their property and outfitted some vehicles with steel gas lines. "If they're crazy enough t

Hawaii Taxpayers to Get $1 of State Budget Surplus
    2008-05-27 23:00:00
The Hawaii Constitution requires that the state refund taxes to taxpayers if the general fund is in surplus by at least five percent for two years. Obeying the letter of the law, the state legislature enacted a $1-per-taxpayer income tax credit, which will be paid out on the 2009 tax return.Local tax policy activist Lowell Kalapa says its stingy:Last year, when lawmakers were required to provide a refund credit as a result of the general fund triggering the constitutional mandate, they provided the refund credit only to taxpayers with federal adjusted gross income of less than $60,000. However, the amount of the credit was more generous, with amounts ranging from $160 to $90 for joint returns and from $65 to $25 for single returns on an inversely graduated scale. So does the Governor, who let the bill become law without her signature:In a statement, Governor Linda Lingle says "The token amount in this year's bill comes at a time when families in Hawaii are facing increased costs of

Fewer seats, higher airfares cast a shadow over Hawaii
    2008-05-09 19:19:00
Rising airfares and fewer flight choices could spoil some travelers' plans to visit Hawaii this summer. From June to August, airlines have scheduled 14% fewer seats than last year between the mainland USA and Hawaii, according to a USA TODAY analysis of flight schedules. The biggest cuts came about six weeks ago, when two passenger airlines went out of business — and prices jumped."There are fewer seats in the market, therefore the airlines are able to raise their prices," says Rex Johnson, CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Board.

Arbor Day Look at the Archives: Hawaii's Exceptional Tree Deduction
    2008-04-24 23:00:00
Today is Arbor Day. And to celebrate, we look back at the Tax Policy Blog archives at a post two years ago on one of the wackiest tax laws in the United States: Hawaii's Exceptional Tree Deduction. From former T.F. economist Curtis Dubay: To mark this occasion we bring to you an amusing personal income tax deduction from Hawaii. The ‘exceptional tree’ deduction is as follows, from the Hawaii Personal Income Tax Instructions:You may deduct up to $3,000 per exceptional tree for qualified expenditures you made during the taxable year to maintain the tree on your private property. The tree must be designated as an exceptional tree by the local county arborist advisory committee under chapter 58, HRS. Qualified expenditures are those expenses you incurred to maintain the exceptional tree (excluding interest) that are deemed “reasonably necessary” by a certified arborist. No deduction is allowed in more than one taxable year out of every three consecutive taxable years

    Hawaii Luxury Cruise
    2008-04-17 11:03:18
It is important to remember that a Hawaii luxury cruise could cost you considerably more than a more fun filled one. However, on these kinds of cruises you will find that you get what you have paid for. But if you would like to enjoy the luxury of such a cruise then there are things that you can do which may make such a trip more affordable. When booking your accommodation, although the thought of having an outside cabin or stateroom sounds nice, it can increase just how much your cruise will cost quite substantially. But a great way of saving money is to instead book a cabin or stateroom inside the ship. Although you may not have the same views offered by the outside ones, you will still have the same level of comfort and luxury.Furthermore although the ship may be calling at several ports during the cruise, if you want to save yourself money then do not actually go ashore at them all. Instead just select a few so you will not need to include further costs for shopping, lunch and the

Hawaii Vacation Auto Rental When in Maui
    2008-04-01 09:59:49
You have the travel tickets and you have the accommodation. The problem is how you will get to the hotel from the airport and how you will get to the beach from the hotel. Well, you forgot something when planning a Maui Hawaii vacation, a auto rental.Actually, you are not alone. Most people who plan their vacations, whether in Hawaii or anywhere else in the world, always forget this small detail. Some do not even bother at all, rationalizing that the hotel can provide car service for them or that there are hundreds of cabs that can accommodate them. The problem with these two is the fact that they are limited in some ways. Hiring a cab for example will never be as convenient as having a transportation that is all your own. If you rent an automobile, you can go whenever you want, wherever you want. You just need to start the engine. You don't have to wait for a cab in the middle of nowhere. Hotel car service, on the other hand, can be pretty expensive, not to mention very hard to get by

    Hawaii - two-for-one airfare & hotel packages
    2008-03-11 11:12:00
Now, onto Maui, I tested the one-star Aston Maui Lu hotel, in Kihei, for the same dates, and with its most basic room and the default United flight picks, the subtotal is $459, plus $240 in taxes, for a total of $699.Unfortunately, with this package, the inbound flight back to LAX arrives at 4:28 a.m. For a possibly more convenient flight schedule, you could pay an extra $161 (including taxes) for an ATA Airlines flight and, of course, multiple possibilities exist depending on what is convenient for you and how much you’re willing to pay.Caveat: Packages must be paid in full at time of booking, and they’re non-transferable and nonrefundable if you don’t have travel insurance. Also, if going for the lowest-price-level rooms, don’t expect luxury. A previous post on the Castle Maile Sky Court prompted this reader comment: “I stayed there several years ago; for those on a budget, it’s a good deal.

    Weekend Window: Lanai, Hawaii
    2008-03-10 08:12:00
Hawaii is a popular tourist destination and the state's bigger islands usually get the most visitors. That's why the state's smallest island is the perfect getaway for those looking for more low-keyed relaxation."It's just so different from any other Hawaiian island. You won't believe it," said Kathy Caroll of Mike Caroll Gallery. "I think people should come to Lanai if they want to experience complete and utter solitude. I can't think of a more relaxing place to be."The destination spot may have a calmer vibe than the sometimes-crowded beaches and tourist destinations on the larger islands of Oahu, Maui and Hawaii."You come to Lanai and you commune with nature. It's a real experience; it's not something that's contrived," said Kepa Maly, of Lana'i Cultural Heritage Center.Lanai, which also is known as the Island of Mystery and the Secluded Isle, only has about 2,800 inhabitants, which adds to its feeling of quietude. The island's geography offers a view of different cliffs and rock for

2008 Sugar Bowl: Georgia v. Hawaii
    2008-01-01 18:00:00
Breaking Down GeorgiaPrior to an October 13th matchup against highly touted Florida, Georgia was struggling after two early season blowout losses. Then in the victory over Florida, they discovered redshirt freshman Knowshown Moreno who carried the Dawgs to a big victory. Over the second half of the season, Moreno has been the heart and soul of the Bulldogs' offensive attack. In a game against Auburn, Moreno, had 101 yards on 22 caries. Hawaii has not faced a running back as good as Moreno so expect the Dawgs to try and control the line of scrimmage by pounding the ball with Moreno.Riding Moreno and the much improved quarterback Matt Stafford, Georgia ended up finishing 10-2 but they were unable to face LSU in the SEC championship as they lost the tiebreaker to Tennessee, who had beaten 35-7 on October 6th. Since the Dawgs were denied a chance for a SEC championship bid, most voters did not give Georgia a shot for the national title and they ended up in New Orleans a week earlier for the Sugar Bowl. Look for the Dawgs to try and make a statement.Breaking Down HawaiiMuch like the 2006 Fiesta Bowl was for Boise State, this Sugar Bowl will be the biggest game in Hawaii’s history. A win over the "hottest team in college football" will signal the arrival of the Warriors as a national power. They certainly have the offensive playmakers to knock off the highly touted Georgia Bulldogs. At quarterback the Warriors feature one of College football's greatest players of all-time in Colt Brennan. Brennan, who finished third in the Heisman voting, holds the Division I-A record for touchdowns with 131. Currently, he is also the nation's active leader in career completion percentage (70.7), pass efficiency (169.8) and total offense (394.8 yards per game). What separates Brennan from the typical quarterback is his ability to get the ball to multiple receivers. Receivers Ryan Grice-Mullen (100 catches, 1,335 yards), Davone Bess (101 catches, 1,213 yards) and Jason Rivers (82 catches

    Hawaii Superferry Voyages Cancelled
    2007-12-29 04:35:14
The Superferry was never given a warm welcome on any of the neighbor islands. Many of us that live on neighbor islands would prefer to keep our islands rural, peaceful, less built up and polluted, and with less crime than Oahu. I know most polls show that a strong majority of the people [...]

Italy Beats Hawaii as the Best Honeymoon Destination
    2007-09-29 18:49:00
Author: Roy WitmanAsk any bride-to-be and she'll quickly tell you that honeymoon dreams come true in Hawaii. This tropical paradise has been king of the hill when it comes to honeymoon destinations for nine straight years. But this year, the king was dethroned. Instead of finding Hawaii as big kahuna, Italy took the lead.In previous years, Italy ranked third, but in the 11th annual Modern Bride survey for 2007, it surpassed Hawaii, followed by Tahiti, Costa Rica, Mexico and France. The 11th annual survey was conducted through a network of 6,000 luxury travel agents who ranked their 50 favorite honeymoon spots. The results appear in the magazine's August/September issue. But what doesn't appear is the answer to the question "why?"According to Hawaii's state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, the trend has been building over time. The number of honeymoon couples traveling to the Aloha State fell to just over 200,000 as of June this year. That's a 1.2% drop from 2006. Hawaii certainly has beauty and a playground with enough adventure and romance to keep couples busy for weeks. But Italy is beginning to be appreciated for many of its unique features.VeniceFor instance, Venice charms young and old alike with magical waterways stretching throughout the entire city. The gentle trickling of water through the canals is romantic on its own. Add to that a dreamy gondola ride and you've set the mood for the entire trip. Truth be known, Venetians travel by gondola because there are no cars, not because of the romance! You also won't find any motorbikes or motorized scooters. Why no cars? Because there are no roads to drive them on!What you will find in Venice is gorgeous scenery along with palaces, museums and art collections. Open-air food markets are also plentiful and make for wonderful shopping. Or, of course, you can dine at any number of restaurants where you'll delight in truly authentic northern Italian cuisine. You won't want to leave with

Maui is Hawaii's premier golf and travel destination
    2007-08-28 04:14:00
More than nearly any other major golf destination, Hawaii has the reputation of a chameleon. From the bustling Big Island to smaller isles like Lanai and Molokai, golf travelers can have the energy of a big-time tourist town, the laid-back, unfettered beaches of hidden island gems, and all delights in between. More than 20 golf courses make their home on Maui, making this Hawaiian Island one of the world's greatest golf destinations. While the sheer number of golf courses makes it impossible to highlight them all, here's a sampler plate of some of the amazing golf courses Maui has to offer.

Plantation & Gardens a bountiful bit of old Hawaii
    2007-08-26 03:43:00
Kaneohe, Hawaii - Patsy Fong is sorting ti leaves, hundreds of glossy green leaves piled according to size and quality. She works quickly, seemingly without thought, while carrying on conversations with those arriving at the open-air pavilion of the visitor center at Senator Fong's Plantation & Gardens for a lei-making class. Clearly she has done this before. Important plant, the ti, sacred to Laka, goddess of the hula. One hundred ti leaves add up to a hula skirt. Wrapped in a piece of cloth it will last for years, aging to the rich brown seen in old Hawaii drawings.

Hawaii Back to normal as hurricane Flossie becomes tropical storm
    2007-08-18 00:22:00
It is business as usual throughout the Hawaiian Islands as Hurricane Flossie passed by Hawaii’s Big Island leaving nothing more than gusty winds, rain, and high surf in its tracks. The more northerly islands of Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Oahu and Kauai were largely unaffected. The National Weather Service cancelled the hurricane watch for Hawaii’s Big Island and downgraded Flossie to a tropical storm as the system passed by the island’s south shore on its westerly path away from the state.

Fuel surcharge, pricier seats on Hawaii Superferry
    2007-08-16 02:03:00
The base fares for one-way trips on the Hawaii Superferry are $42-62 per adult; $41-51 for seniors, retired military, and children aged 2-12; and $17 for infants under 2 years old. A lounge upgrade costs $20/passenger. If you’re bringing a vehicle, you’ll pay another $34-44 per motorcycle, moped or scooter and $59-$104 per car, SUV, van or pick-up truck. The cheapest tickets are for off-peak travel (Tuesday through Thursday) and 14-day advance purchase web fares. While inter-island ferries already run between Maui and both Lanai and Molokai, they don’t take vehicles. Now you could theoretically take a rental car aboard the Hawaii Superferry and go island-hopping more easily between Oahu and Maui or Kauai.

    Hawaii: Inter-island cruising for golfers
    2007-08-12 00:28:00
NCL’s on-board Club Valet service, which costs $40/day, includes secure storage, club cleaning and delivery of your clubs to the pier each day that you play. Considering how small some cruise-ship rooms are, it may be worth the price just to get your clubs out of the way overnight. Otherwise, club rentals cost from $39/$149 per day/week at the ship’s pro shop, which also rents and sells other golf gear, arranges for golf lessons and can even pair passengers with other players.

They’re advertising $100 off Hawaii vacations for travel until September 19th, or a $150 activity credit for trips taken between September 20th and December 31st, 2007.

Hawaii benefits from added Pacific tsunami stations
    2007-08-02 06:51:00
NOAA's National Data Buoy Center has successfully established four new tsunami stations in the northwest Pacific Ocean, east of Japan and Russia. The four Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami, or DART stations, help provide additional detection and warning capability for Hawaii, Alaska and the West Coast of the United States. "The DART network is part of an ongoing effort to increase the U.S. tsunami warning capability," said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator.

    Hawaii’s other islands
    2007-07-26 10:15:59
From this side of the world, there is just “Hawaii” but what we know of Hawaii is just one of the islands in the chain (Oahu) and the others are very different from that one. Kauai is very different. Here you’ll find a much quieter type of holiday with resorts giving you the chance to have a beach holiday but in a beautiful island setting. Although the whole Hawaii chain of islands looks pretty small on the map, some of the islands are quite large and all of them have so much to do that we’ll only be looking at a small area of Kauai which should give you a good feel of what the island is like. As with all the islands in the group, Kauai has all the beaches that you’d expect with water sports, snorkeling (in beautifully clear waters) and, of course, the scenery. National parks abound and near Poipu you’ll find the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Along with the other islands you’ll find lava formations and Spouting Horn is worth a visit to se

    Hawaii tourist pattern inverts

The state has welcomed 590,933 arrivals by air from July 1 through the past weekend, the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism reported Monday, down 0.6 percent from 594,420 arrivals last year by now.
