Yogurt - Heartburn Relief And Much More
    2008-03-28 08:32:48
Yogurt is very good for digestive health. The bacteria in yogurt decompose protein, making it easier for the resulting amino acids to be absorbed in the digestive tract. These bacteria also predigest lactose, sugar found in milk, by producing the enzyme lactase. This allows people who suffer from lactose intolerance to eat yogurt because this people are unable to consume milk products. Also, yogurt can reduce the amount of disease-causing microbes within the intestines. Generally, a state of imbalance develops when bad bacteria in the intestines start to overwhelm the good bacteria. This imbalance can lead to disorders in both digestive tract itself and the body at large, including life-threatening illnesses such as bowel cancer. The bacteria in yogurt can help restore the intestines to a state of health. In addition to helping digestion, yogurt gives us other health benefits:Experiments have shown that yogurt cultured with friendly bacteria significantly reduces the blood cholesterol le

    Heartburn: The Burning Sensation
    2007-11-14 22:37:34
Heartburn, also called pyrosis, is a condition wherein there is a painful or burning sensation in the esophagus, just below the breastbone because of gastric acid regurgitation. The pain is described to rise to the chest and may even radiate to the neck, throat, or angle of the jaw. The pain worsens when you bend over, lie down, or eat. It may also be more frequent or worse in the evenings.A common misconception is that heartburn affects the heart. The truth of the matter is, this medical condition is not, in any way, related to the heart. One reason why it was called heartburn is because the pain is usually felt on the breastbone where the heart is situated.Another reason is because the hydrochloric acid from the stomach goes back up to the esophagus because of a problem with the cardiac sphincter, a valve in the stomach, which does not have anything to do with the heart. What causes heartburn? To understand what causes heartburn, one must understand how the upper digestive tract works. When you swallow, the cardiac sphincter relaxes to let foods and liquids into the stomach. Then it closes again to prevent food from coming back up. If the cardiac valve weakens of relaxes abnormally, gastric acid may flow back up to the esophagus, causing a burning sensation, or heartburn. Here are factors that may trigger or make heartburn worse:o Food. (fatty foods, spicy foods, chocolate, caffeine, onions, tomato sauce, carbonated drinks, and mint.) o Alcoholic beverages. o Large meals. o Lying down too soon after eating. o Medications. (certain sedatives, antidepressants and calcium channel blockers for high blood pressure) o Cigarette smoking. o Stress and fatigue. o Medical condition. (hiatal hernia)What medical complications may arise from leaving heartburn untreated? Most heartburn attacks are occasional. However, if your heartburn becomes severe or chronic, your body may already be telling you that you have gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD). People might mistake it as ju

Do you know why we have heartburn?
    2007-10-29 09:36:58
Prof. Know Why answers: Before you start thinking something else, let me clarify what is heartburn! Heartburn has nothing to do with ‘heart’. Also known as pyrosis, heartburn is a form of indigestion. It is a painful burning sensation in the esophagus below the breastbone, caused by regurgitation of gastric acid. Now let’s see how we have heartburn! Heartburn happens when acid from your stomach gets forced upwards into the oesophagus (gullet). This is called acid reflux. The stomach wall is coated with a layer of mucus that protects it from digestive acid. The oesophagus does not have this protection, so any acid that leaks up, irritates and damages its lining. This causes the burning pain associated with heartburn. But why do we have heartburn? Heartburn is becoming the single most important factor behind the rise in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) that nowadays largely affects the urban population, mostly due to their long working hours, erratic lifestyle, bad posture (the way you sit and stand) and bad eating habits. Foods that may cause heartburn are: Alcohol (especially red wine) and Tobacco (in any form).Caffeinated and carbonated beverages like Coffee, tea, cola and soda.Chocolates and ice creams.Citrus fruits and juices; tomatoes and sauces.Spicy foods; fatty foods; dry foods like peanuts.Red pepper; peppermint and spearmint. Remedies: Drink lots of water and maintain a proper diet. If heartburn occurs when lying down, raising the head with pillows or sitting up frequently may provide some relief. Doctors treat heartburn with antacids or H2-receptor antagonists and proton pump inhibitors (in that order). Related Post: Do you know why we have gall-stones? Easy Home Treatments for Heartburn
    2007-07-10 00:49:12
The photo in this entry is Gloomy Sky. Photographed and edited by me, Lynda Walldez. I have suffered from heartburn on occasion for the past 2 years. Lately I have not had any symptoms because I'm doing some of these home treatments. I'd like to share them with those that would like relief. If these don't work for you, see your doctor. Following these home treatment tips can prevent most cases of heartburn. However, if backflow of stomach acid into your esophagus happens regularly, you may have GERD, gastroesophogeal reflux disease. It can cause continuous irritation of the lining of the esophagus, which can lead to other health problems. Try other home treatments before taking antacids or stomach acid blockers to relieve heartburn. If you take medication to relieve heartburn without doing other home treatments, your heartburn is likely to keep coming back. Eat smaller meals, and avoid late night snacks. Don't lie down for 2 to 3 hours after eating.Avoid foods that bring on... N

More Insanity -- Heartburn Drugs for Kids
    2007-04-23 02:47:00
A recent report indicates that long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), used to stop stomach acid from refluxing into the esophagus, may be safe and effective in children. PPIs include drugs such as Prilosec (omeprazole) and Prevacid (lansoprazole). The study examined 166 pediatric patients with reflux disease who used PPIs for up to 11 years. Most patients used omeprazole, but a few used lansoprazole. Doses ranged from 4 mg to 90 mg each day.PPIs can cause increased rate of some infections, B12 deficiency, and iron and calcium malabsorption.
