    Heritage Monument-The Humble Bus Stop
    2008-06-26 11:11:15
image by otto0731 It was with great affection that I read today that Singapore's oldest Bus Stop will be preserved. Originally reserved for demolition as part of upgrading works, it has been saved after the Straits Times ran an online poll earlier this month asking people to vote for their favourite landmark earmarked for demolition. The bus stop was the most popular pick, drawing 27 per cent of the 1,103 votes cast in the week-long poll. I find it slightly bizarre that a bus stop should come up first in such a poll. Situated on Old Chua Chu Kang Road, I haven't been out to see it, but from the picture in the Straits Times (which I cannot reproduce) it looks like a very ordinary bus stop dating back to the 1970s. This is perhaps the point though. People need these small ordinary parts of their history to stay connected to the city which is changing so rapidly. If everything is new, gleaming, plastic and soulless, what is there to associate with? The second choice was Queenstown Libra...

Meditation: Part of the Ancient Judeo-Christian Heritage
    2008-06-17 13:37:49
By Dennis and Vicki MartinIn PressPubs.Com In our rushed and sometimes toxic world, most of us would like nothing more than to relax. Some people have even made a business of helping others relax. The "relaxation response" popularized by Dr. Herbert Benson of Harvard Medical School in the 1970’s is based on two simple steps common to all approaches to meditation, past and present:• focusing the mind on a single object; and• passively dismissing and ignoring all other thoughts.Although it may sound a bit "New-Agey", or at least a little mystical, meditation is also part of the ancient Judeo-Christian heritage. The Psalmist speaks often of meditation: "Blessed is the man who ... meditates in [God’s] law day and night" (Psalm 1:1-2). Since David is here speaking of an activity that can fill his days even as he works, it may be a little different from the tuned-out state one often thinks of as "meditation." But they have a lot in common, too.One reason I myself have failed so miser...

Intangible cultural heritage, including historic practices which are not visible such as oral traditions, is the subject of a UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation) convention officially recognising and protecting 90 ‘Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity’. Heritage Vancouver has pulled out the big guns
    2008-03-17 06:28:00
At the top of the list is the iconic art deco Burrard Bridge, completed in 1932, which has earned a spot on the list for the past six years because the city is pushing to overhaul its look with outer bike lanes, known as outriggers. It's akin to placing a stainless steel hula-hoop over your grandmother's ball gown, Heritage Vancouver notes dryly. Second on the list are about 40 to 60 of the city's historic public schools, which continue to be threatened with demolition as part of a seismic upgra...

The Heritage Foundation Likes That Mexican Stimulus Package Malkin & Rush Dislike!

MALKIN LIES, REASON DIESOnce again Malkin  goes ballistic over something she knows very little about, but since it says “Mexico” and it might assist Mexico, and all Mexicans are evil, then it is automatically bad.  Hot Air waxes poetic because Rush mentions Malkin. Hot Air’s link to Rush. What is even more fascinating is that one of Malkin’s “gods” The Heritage Foundation APPROVES of this move. THE HERITAGE FOUNDATION approves of the Merida Initiative.   I guess on Malkin’s part, ignorance is bliss as she continues to harp on what is a very good thing and a long time ......

    Heritage Valley California
    2008-01-15 13:49:00
California's Heritage Valley is a rural agricultural area located approximately 50 miles north of Los Angeles. The valley has citrus and avocado groves along both sides of the highway 126 . Driving down the valley is like taking a time machine back to the 1950s. The small towns of Fillmore and Santa Paula are much the same as they were 40 years ago. There are many produce stands along throughout the valley where you can stock up on local products. Fillmore is home of the Hollywood movie trains and Santa Paula has the California Oil Museum. Take a trip back to a simpler time and enjoy a day in the Heritage Valley....

ז' בטבת תשס"חGrael 8* I am the 6th great grandniece of American founding father and statesman Benjamin Franklin through my mother's father's mother's line. ** Classic American author William Faulkner is another distinguished member of my family tree on my mother's side. ** The Faulkner clan arrived in America (Maryland) via Wales 22 January 1665 on the ship Agreement, setting out from Bristol. Their passage was paid for with 300 pounds of tobacco. This family consisted of John Faulkner (son of William Faulkner "citizen & draper of London" and Elizabeth Filmer, daughter of Sir Edward Filmer & Dame Elizabeth Argall) and Elizabeth (daughter of Reginald Filmer & Jane Travis), and their children John, Thomas & Francis. The Faulkner British connection is through my mother's mother's father's line. Patriarch John Faulkner was born in Wales. Justice Clarence Thomas' Speech in Front of the Heritage Foundation
    2007-10-22 06:43:59
A few hours ago I attended Justice Clarence Thomas' speech in front of the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society. It was a very enlightening discussion. His life's story is truly remarkable.Although Justice Thomas spoke mostly about his life and his book, "My Grandfather's Son: A Memoir," he was also willing to answer questions about his time on the Supreme Court. Thankfully, he was also able to answer my question directly, "Should Justices consider public policy ramifications when writing opinions?"His response was exactly what I wanted to hear. He stated that Justices should be very careful to read the law as it is, and not how they want it to be. He asked a very rhetorical question, which helped to clarify his position. He stated, "What was the public policy in the 1955 South?" "Should Judges have interpreted the 14th Amendment through the lens of public policy when the majority was racist?" "What was public policy during the time of the Dred Scott case?"Overall, he expressed that Judges should avoid considering public policy. It is for Judges to interpret the law as it is. Hopefully our next President will nominate more Justices like him.Justice Thomas also clarified why it is so dangerous for Justices to incorporate international jurisprudence into our law. He felt that is for our leaders and not for Judges to determine whether international law should be incorporated. He stated very eloquently that Judges never adopt laws from China or North Korea or Zimbabwe when they adopt foreign law. They usually cherry pick laws from other Countries that mirrors their own philosophy. Consequently, this should be avoided as well because it is simply too easy to cherry pick any jurisprudence that one wants to reach a particular end result. In the end I will leave you with how Justice Thomas described himself as a Constitutional Originalist. He said, "There are two types of Constitutional philosophy: 1) Originalists attempt to interpret the Constitution as the Founders wanted it to be as close as possible; and 2) You can just make stuff up." Thankfully we have people like Justice Thomas on our Court.Related EditorialsJustice Clarence Thomas’ Interview on 60 Minutes, Quick RecapLiberal Media Reports Another Worthless Poll Claiming that Americans Say the Supreme Court has become “Too Conservative”John Paul Stevens: Old and ConfusedLiberal Media Perpetuates Ignorance about the Seattle School District’s Supreme Court CaseSupreme Court Strikes Down Seattle School District's Racial BalancingStare Decisis Means Never Having to Say You're SorryOur Worst JudgeReviving the Constitution in Exile...

    Our Western Heritage...
    2007-10-12 05:16:00
If you know me, you know I am an avid supporter of The West Coast and continuously try to instill some type of business ethics to whats left of our musical structure. This week, we have (2) major situations which blantantly show that we have to be more "business minded" and strive for ownership of our creations, both past & present.First off, the powers that control the Eric "Eazy-E" Wright master works have decided to throw together a project titled "Featuring... Eazy-E". A project derived from past duets and collaborations. PURE TRASH! Eazy-E is the "Godfather" of our Gangsta Rap heritage and what they've done to his legacy is unspeakable. Unlike 2Pac & Biggie, who've released numerous post-humous recordings, There seems to be no-one who cared enough about the Ruthless Records legacy enough to go in and "create" a project to celebrate the efforts of Eric Wright. Instead, everyone has been complacent with re-hashing material for re-release. Not a bit of integrity or creativity, for the man who was first at having numerous label/production deals at different labels at the same time! Back in 1988, Eazy-E had JJ Fad & The D.O.C at Atlantic Records, N.W.A and his solo work at Priority Records, all thru his Ruthless Records imprint; with his Comp-Town imprint at Warner Brothers with white female rapper Teirry B. People dont give Eazy the respect and admiration he deserves. I think because he passed from a disease thats frowned upon, they discredit his genius. The "Featuring... Eazy E" project plays into the same 'ol, same 'ol fold. If you were a true fan of Eazy E, you'd know he had some collab's and features that can damn near be used as new verses, as the projects they're featured on are obscure & hard to find. THATS WHAT THE FANS WANT!! Not music you can google or find on limewire, which is what this project seems like. Why not grab accapellas, new & established producers and really make it a project? Enlist some new verses and appearances from those new artists that are/were inspired by the late-great Eazy-E. That would be an EVENT of a project, not this cut & paste effort from todays boring industry.Because no one alive is in control over Eazy's estate and/or master recordings... Capitol/EMI (which brought Priority Records in 2000) probably paid a "mountain-climber who plays an electric guitar to throw together a lackluster compilation and label it a new album. Where's Jerry Heller?? How about Tamika Wright??? Lil 'E??? I guess everyone just took their cut & ran off to live comfortable. Do remember... If there was no Eazy-E, there would'nt be a Dr. Dre and everything that falls in line after that - Get A Bar!My next observation is of the almighty Death Row Records catalog and sale thereof. We all know the travesty of this empire. Long story short, Marion "Suge" Knight founded a power-house label off drug money from Micheal "Harry-O" Harris and creates one of the most powerful record labels of all time, only to have it diminished with Suge's childhood dreams of being a "Super Gang-Banger'". Hands down the ugliest story that caused the demise of an empire, as well as an entire coast. After generating over $300m during their heyday, Suge let it all go to jump a rival gang member which lead to the death of rap superstar 2Pac Shakur. Pure ignorance... Years later, after stints in prison and no major corporation willing to touch him, Suge takes the catalog, WHICH HE OWNED, SOLELY to Koch Distribution. But with so many bad business deals, hearsay of being behind the death of the Notorious B.I.G and everybody and their momma suing him for their peice of the pie... Death Row Records & Suge Knight declared bankruptsy. While at Koch, Suge raped what masters he owned from the 2Pac catalog with his "2Pac -Nu-Mixx Classiks" series with no-name bootleg producers remixing tracks from the "All Eyes On Me" & "Makaveli" projects. Has anyone ever heard any of these remixes? I cant say I have.... But it's those records and the Death Row catalog which basically kept Koch in business during their early rise and gives them the revenue needed to now become a sole front-runner in the independent game. Crazy to think how many corporations were built off this gangsta shit!!!If it weren't for Afeni Shakur fighting for her son's legacy, 2Pac creative works would have probably been shot to hell. Even tho they move every year to release a 2pac project, which to me has brought down the strength of his catalog, but at least his family stays hands-on with the creative direction & authenticity of his projects. Now Im not saying the last efforts of the 2Pac estate have been the best, but at least they are being compiled with the thought of upholding 2Pac's Legacy and "controlled" by family with sales, proceeds, & royalties going to The Amaru Family/Foundation.The Death Row catalog, which includes Dr. Dre's "The Chronic", Snoop Dogg's "Doggy Style", The Dogg Pound's "Dogg Food" & 2pac's "All Eyes On Me" & "Makaveli" albums are all CLASSIC albums. These records had a tremendous effect on hip-hop & music in general. So why are the people involved allowing it to be sold off to the highest bidder? This is where I have to go in at Dr. Dre... Dre, you have created some of the dopest music & complete classic albums of our time, so why just let them go like you dont even care about them??? You've spent your whole life running from these situations. Now would be the time to step up as a Business Man, and gain control over your early works. That is what I would call a POWER PLAY. I know, I know, your boo-koo rich already and you dont care, but you should. Those moments in time should be controled by the ones who created it, and once you pass on, by your family who will hopefully have your best interest at hand, like with the Jimi Hendrix & Bob Marley family who will forever eat & live off their fathers creations. Why just let it go? And in your quest to stop the auction, you are only looking for your royalties? C'mon G... In this age, royalties are about to be null & void... ownership is what you would want with digital distro & ringtone deals for your classic gangsta shit. You dont own any of your recordings? You should have a learned a lesson way back dealing with 'Lonzo & The World Class Wreckin' CrewFirst off, YOU & Snoop should be coming together to own those records after all the blood, sweat & tears you two put forth. That is "Good Business" and would show that artists from the West are really about their business. "The Chronic" & "Doggystyle" are GREATS! Musical Picasso's in terms of thier effect on musicianship & the industry. These (2) albums still generate mass amounts of money yearly, just by being on the shelf (ask Alan Grunblatt). I know it may not be about the money for you... but it should be about principle. Again, CORPORATIONS are being built off your hard work. And is no doubt that you are rich, but we need to strive for wealth! Look at what Jay-Z was willing to give up for his rights to "Reasonable Doubt". By far his least selling album, but it was as he calls it, his "Baby" and to own the rights/masters is an important milestone for him. And P. Diddy, I have to applaude him for going in and purchasing his catalog from Arista, all of it!! After all these children he's poppin up with, hell he better have something to leave them to eat off of. Its situations like these which allows other coast to applaud or musical efforts, but laugh at our business structure. We have to be more focused on the long term instead of the short term on the West. Our legacy & heritage is pretty much a free for all. We dont control any inch of it! From the music, on down to the image & culture. We sold it out... for little to nothing!!! With ownership comes long term wealth, and the ability to start other companies and offer jobs to kids from the hood. With ownership you can "wag the dog" and control peoples perception of popular culture. It's already been done with the releases discussed here... But the facts are someone else now owns that.Let's look down the road at what this will mean to the next generation & generations to come. Stop with the "snatch & grab" tactics and get down to business, REAL BUSINESS, of the music that fueled our coast & the lifestyle that came with it.People really died behind that "gangsta shit" out here... all the while, some fat white dude laughs.. straight to the bank with the soundtracks of that era - ha,ha-ha,ha,ha. nfeeds.com...

    Modern English Shrub Rose 'Heritage'
    2007-09-16 15:29:26
Modern English Shrub Rose 'Heritage'Synonyms: Roberta, AUSblushIn celebration of having my blog reviewed in ‘Rose Ramblings’, the monthly newsletter of the San Diego Rose Society, I have decided to post this photo. The newsletter is available by subscription only so there is no link that I can post. I hope some of the members send me some email. I would love to be able to grow roses in Southern California. They have to grow better than here in Connecticut, with its broiling summer heat and suffocating humidity. The other nice thing that happened to this website was it was awarded a ‘Photo Genius’ award from Mike at Photoxication. The award was created by Ali at A Bit of This and a Dash of the Other! Both Ali and Mike are nice people, people you wouldn’t mind going out with for a few pints at your local pub, although I think Mike drives his motorcycle a little too fast sometimes (just kidding). I am both honored and humbled that he thought my photography warranted this award....

Another Roman site classified as "archaeological heritage"
    2007-05-18 12:44:00
The one thousand year-old Roman site "Cotta", located 20 km from the northern city of Tangier, has been classified by the Moroccan Culture Ministry as an archaeological heritage due to its historical importance and its architectural components. The site is located about four kilometers from Cap Spartel, a meeting point between the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, just hundreds of meters from the "Hercules Caves" (pictured above. It is reportedly an ancient industrial complex for fish salting. Drilling work carried out by a French archaeologist fifty years ago showed that the site was a Roman industrial counter. The remains of the salting and treatment unit include several installations whose size shows a huge production capacity probably destined for export to other regions of the Mediterranean. There is a space of fish preparation which includes sixteen salting basins, a huge underground tank, a boiler house equipped with three levels of heating for drying the fish and wareh...
