    2008-12-29 20:20:00
A quick year-ending joke for you...Two guys are out for a long hike one day. They stop to take a rest for a few minutes and just then, a large venomous snake slithers by and bites one of the guys on his "manhood"! "Oh shit, what am I gonna do", says the guy that got bit. His friend says, "Stay here, I'll run to get help and be right back". With that, the friend runs as fast as he can to get help. The friend keeps on running for about an hour until he finally comes to a small town. All he sees is an abandoned gas station, an old diner, and a run-down bar. Inside the bar he goes and rushes ...

A Father came home from a long buisness trip to find his young son riding a brand new bike. "Where did you get the money for that?" , he asked. "It must have cost you over $300.00!""I earned it hiking", he replied."Hiking? ?? Come on son; tell your dad the truth. Nobody can make that kind of money hiking. Where did you get the cash from?""It's like I say, Dad. Every night when you were gone, Mr. Johnson, from the bank would come over to see mom and give me a $20.00 bill and tell me to take a hike."...

By BONNIE TSUI LAST summer, an exploratory group of five hikers walked among the majestic, jagged limestone peaks of Sutjeska National Park, eventually ascending to the top of 7,828-foot Maglic, the highest mountain in the country of Bosnia and Herzegovina. There, they enjoyed views of Montenegro, then the newest nation in the world (it is now second [...]...

Spending a full day (6 hours ice time) hiking on the Franz Joseph Glacier on the west coast of New Zealand’s South Island was something I’d been looking forward to for months. It was fully my intent to do the full day hike, however… About 3 days after I had completed the Tongariro Crossing [...]...

    Hitch Hiking
    2007-11-19 08:19:00
A month in Kelantan made me to take the first step towards a thousand miles. I really got addicted to travelling after seeing the wonderful East Coast state of Kelantan. There was a new passion, a dream and a vision to see the rest of the world. But many obstacles drowned my ambition to explore the distant lands.I was almost confined to my little hell for the next two years. Times were difficult, preparing for my Senior Cambridge examination, struggling to pay my school fees and my examination fees. I would be always the last one to pay the fees. My uncle would keep postponing the paying date and even if he did, it was always after a shower of verbal abuse. It was frightening to ask for the fees or anything that matters concerning school. My Senior Cambridge examination fees was paid for by a kind hearted, caring neighbour after watching the treatment I got from my uncle. He had a gem stone shop and most of the time he would help me with little pocket money.Every morning I would wash my uncle’s car before going to school. I seldom asked him money for buying school books or revision books as I was too frightened to ask or face him. Then the final days of my school came to an end when I sat for my Senior Cambridge examination. After the examination, I decided to hitch hike to Singapore with a cousin of mine. During this time, hitch hiking was common not only in Malaysia but throughout the world. There used to be a lot of backpackers who opted to hitch hike.During the early days there was no bridge linking Penang with the main land. But today we have one of the longest bridges in the world linking Penang Island to the main land. Even we didn’t have highways during the sixties. Most of the roads were narrow and it took nearly twice the time compared to the present day to reach our destinations.Penang Bridge & Ferry RideThe further you are from the city, the easier it was to hitch. So we took a ferry to cross Penang Island. After arriving at the main land we walke...

Biking, hiking and camping on the dry side of the Cascades
    2007-09-27 03:15:00
Wenatchee Confluence State Park is one of many dry-side parks that offer opportunities for one (or maybe even two) more camping trips before the rains come and the tent, tarps and RV are put away for the year. State parks such as Pearrygin Lake, Yakima Sportsman and Lake Wenatchee still offer sun if not the 90-degree temps of summer. Plus, in fall, it's a heck of a lot easier to get a campsite at such parks. No need to reserve a site months in advance; just show up and you should have the pick of the sites, perhaps even that primo spot that in summer you could only dream about landing. ...

    Hiking in Italy Western Alps
    2007-09-13 08:32:00
Some of the best things about Italy are found completely within the Western Alps, if you’re a hiker. Of course there’s the country’s highest peak, which no hiker can resist. Then there is Italy’s oldest national park, also found in the Western Alps. Count the amazing variety of flora and fauna, the alpine meadows, and accessible yet remote wilderness areas, and you have the perfect setting for a hiker’s dream vacation in beautiful Italy. Discover Colonna mine or encounter wildlife throughout Vallone del Grand Nomenon.Reach your personal goals and try for the six-day trek along the Alta Via 2, known as a particularly challenging route. From Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso (Gran Paradiso National Park) to Valle d’Aosta, to Monte Bianco (the highest peak in Europe), there is a series of wonderful pathways for hikers and walkers who will find that traversing the Western Alps to be the experience of a lifetime. Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso will stun you with its beauty: deep lateral peaks and plunging valleys below will amaze even the most seasoned hiker. The valleys were cut by glaciers, which left behind the jagged silhouettes and sharp peaks for which the Alps in general have become famous. There are numerous glaciers still within Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso, including Italy’s highest mountain, Gran Paradiso. Gran Paradiso is just about 13,324 feet high and full of magnificent larch. Larch is a deciduous conifer, the only type found in all of Europe. Some trees get to be over one hundred feet tall and great stands of larch form sweeping green canopies in the sky which will protect you from the sun as you walk or hike the mountain. Besides larch, hikers will welcome Norway spruce, Arolla pine, and silver fir.The Arolla pine should be especially revered because it’s in decline here in Italy. Furniture makers and others crave the beautiful wood for their products, and the pine has been exploited for many years. Gran Paradiso also hosts several...

This 2,278 meter peak towers over the local landscape, and strongly influences local spiritual beliefs. All local temples have a shrine dedicated to the spirit of the “coconut shell” mountain, and high on its slopes is the public (Kayangan Jagat) temple of Pura luhur Watukaru. Hiking to the summit of Batukaru is a 6 - 7 hour trip to the summit, and 5 hours to return. A medium to high level of...

Hiking Mountains and Practicing Aikido Prepare One for the Ups and Downs in Life
    2007-08-11 14:13:00
Miho Shiraki Sensei, a native of Japan, recently visited her old stomping grounds… literally! For over 10 years, Miho would take up her walking stick each month and hike the Sasaguri Shikoku. This is a famous trek started by the Buddhist Monk, Kobo Daishi, which makes its way in a circle to 88 spiritual sites. The most famous of these treks is on the island of Shikoku, thus the name Sasaguri Shikoku. Sasaguri is a mountainous region just between Fukuoka and Kitakyushu on the Southern island of Kyushu. This type of Shugyo, or forging of the spirit, is not as common among youngsters of today, yet Miho religiously took up the task every month for more than a decade. This type of training has come in handy, preparing her to endure the ups and downs in daily life. She equates these long treks to her Aikido training, as developing one's character is a lifelong goal of hers.If you would like to learn more about the ancient pilgrimage, Sasaguri Shikiku, click here.To understand how the principles of Shugyo can help you manage the ups and downs of life, click here.It is the application of the principles of Aikido in daily life that is most valuable. My Hiking Adventure
    2007-05-26 03:55:05
The photo in this entry is Wary Lizard. Photographed and edited by me, Lynda Walldez. Yesterday I went on a hiking adventure up a trail at a place called Hellman's Park. It was a pretty nice experience and I managed to get some good shots even with a dying camera battery. I went when the heat of the day was at a peak, but it paid off. I loved being there so much that I'm planning on going on a weekly basis. As I started out on one of the trails which zigzags up a large hill, I realized how much of a workout it was to travel throughout it. It could have just been that I'm pretty out of shape, but I know if I return on a weekly basis and hike for at least an hour, I'll shed pounds in no time. Although I only traveled on one trail there were others which were frequented by mountain bikers as well as joggers. Just in my location, I managed to get some really awesome views of eagles and deer. I also spotted lizards; like the one pictured in this entry, white-tailed rabbit, hummingbir...
