Profiles in Historical Places in East Austin : French Legation Museum
    2008-07-15 00:00:00
The French Legation Museum provides a uniquely historic experience. Both a historic site and a house museum, the story behind the establishment of the museum is fascinating, and helps to illuminate a way of life experienced by the residents of old Austin before Texas was a state. Visiting the house and grounds, with its carefully [...]

    Historical laughter!
    2008-06-29 14:33:06
Tadley and District History Society (TADS) On 21 May, I spoke about An Attractive Impediment: the Life, Literature and Laughter of Patrick Campbell for the Tadley and District History Society in Hampshire. I was able to discover a little about them from their website. Public Speaking Tip #218: You can often find out about an organisation that has booked you by looking at their website. Sometimes even some fairly small groups have one - it's always worth finding out. This was the first time I had ever spoken to a history society and I tailored the material accordingly. Although this talk is primarily about a brilliantly funny Irish journalist who became an unlikely TV celebrity in the 1960s (he had a severe stammer), his story takes in Irish politics, famous figures in the arts in the 1920s and 30s, Ireland during World War II and the early days of satire on British television. I did extra research/revision so that I could highlight the historical parts, for example,

2008 Jacksonville Jaguars: Historical Roster Breakdown
    2008-05-12 11:00:55
The Jacksonville Jaguars offseason training activities start this week and with that begins the battle for positioning toward the final roster.  The NFL only allows 53 players on the final roster and an eight man practice squad.  I thought it might be interesting as be begin our position by position breakdown to look back at how many players we carry on our roster for each role. Teams are required to have their roster at specific levels through training camp.  Because NFL Europa ceases to exist, teams have a hard cap of eighty players under contract.  On August 26th, the roster must be cut down to 75 players.  The final cut date is August 30th where the roster may only have 53 players. Tracking roster sizes for each position is actually fairly complicated.  Players that are multi-functional, particularly on the offensive line, can throw off a count.  For the purposes of this analysis, I will treat all offensive linemen together.  Cornerbacks a

Why it does not make sense to make historical movies in India
    2008-03-14 07:26:50
We have seen it in Asoka. We have seen it in Rising-Mangal Pandey. We saw it happening all over again in Jodhaa Akbar. No doubt, Jodhaa Akbar was a well made movie, albeit a long length. But then historically themed movies never do the best business in India, barring Mughal-e-Azam of yesteryears. Historical movies in India are always embroiled in some sort of controversy. It has been always said that negative publicity is good publicity but it ain’t that good when people pull the movie down from the theatres and do not allow it to release under any cost. The mindset with historical movies is that youngsters are plain bored with historical stories and the older members of the populace always find something odd and conflicting in the story. While the younger generation hardly gives a damn, the older lots are generally the first ones to scream “history is distorted, facts are convoluted”. Since historical facts cannot be readily and comprehensively verified, it is juicy fodder fo

Josiah Concept Ministries and the Historical Christ Hypothesis By Rook Hawkins   After my article on the problems of the historical Jesus and the Gospels as fictional narratives,[1] I was worried that Christians would be afraid to refute these positions, and therefore I would not be able to generate the dialog that I so wanted to have.  Thankfully, one Christian, Cory Tucholski,[2] has taken up this charge to defend his faith against my articles. read more

    HISTORICAL CEMETERY IN GRESIK
    2008-03-09 21:32:00
CEMETERY IN GRESIKThere are some cemeteries which are of historical values in Gresik. Namely the cemetery of Fatimah binti Maimun or the cemetery of Princess Suwari or Princess Cempa (1082 A.D.). The cemetery of Fatimah binti Maimun is considered as the oldest one in Indonesia. The cemetery of Fatimah binti MaimunThe cemetery of Maulana Malik Ibrahim, died in 1419 was the first and the oldest Islamic religious leader (known as wali) who introduced Islam in Java. The building has lots of changed and renovated. Its tombstone is not original anymore, neither is its gate. The roof of its cover has collapsed. Only its four walls are still in good condition though they are cracked. This wall is decorated with horizontal frames, something that is only found here and gives an impression that in the 11th century people were still completely found with temples and therefore the Islamic graves are shaped like temples. The cemetery of Maulana Malik IbrahimSince the roof of the cover is missing, the

    Travel to Australia, Historical background
    2008-01-23 07:38:00
Before travel to Australia you should to know: In the post-World War II-era, Australia’s foreign policy became more closely aligned with the United States than with Britain. Another foreign policy theme has been collective security. Australian forces participated in the Korean War (1950–53) in support of the United Nations (UN)-sponsored campaign. In 1951 Australia signed the Australia-New Zealand-United States (ANZUS) Security Treaty, which committed the three nations to mutual defense. In 1954 Australia helped found the Southeast Asian Treaty Organization (SEATO), which was the regional equivalent of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). From 1965 to 1971, Australia sent troops to Vietnam in support of the United States-led intervention there. Australia’s relations with some of its Asian neighbors have suffered from time to time because of Australia’s firm positions on immigration, terrorism, and regional security. For example, during the 1980s Malaysia

    More - Historical Of Lombok
    2007-12-19 01:30:00
There is motto in vogue among tourism official and operator in Lombok: " Bali can be seen in Lombok, but Lombok cannot be seen in Bali "Historical Of LombokSuch is the cliché in a brochure advertising Lombok as a tourist destination. That is not without reason. In the western part of the island, Hinduism is heavily present alongside Islam. The island was Javanese prior to the Islamisation of Java, and as such subjected to the powerful influence of the Shiva Buddhist tradition from Java.In the 17th century, the King of Karangasem invaded Lombok, turning into an important center of Hindu - Baliness power and culture. Such influences inter - wine history of Bali and Lombok. The Balinese still makes up an important minority in the western part of the island. The city of Cakranegara is a mainly Balinese city. The Pura Meru Temple, built by Anak Agung Karang in 1720, is dedicated to the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Wisnu, and Shiwa.Another sign of the effect of Karangasem is the famed Taman Nama

Alfa Romeo 159 TI revives a historical sporting badge on its latest 159 variant.
    2007-11-06 08:07:00
A legend is back at Alfa Romeo. The TI badge now appears on the 159 saloon. Short for Turismo Internazionale, the discreet two-letter label is reserved for only the most sporty and luxurious models in the range. To mark the occasion, the Italian manufacturer has fitted the newcomer with an upgraded version of its 2.4-litre JTD diesel engine. It now produces 210bhp – up 10bhp on the old unit. Sports suspension has also been added, alongside cosmetic up-grades inside and out. However, the Alfa faces stiff competition from prestige challengers such as the accomplished BMW 3-Series and new Audi A4. So are the revisions enough to allow the 159 to take on these premium class leaders? If the answer was based on looks alone, the Italian should have its rivals well and truly beaten. At the front is the traditional heart-shaped grille, flanked by six circular headlamps sitting beneath a menacing brow. Move around the car and you’ll be struck by the neat design details – such as

    Historical Mosques
    2007-08-15 10:28:00
My trishaw ride came to a stop in front of a large house situated in Green Lane. As I got down I saw a Black Morris Minor parked at the porch. At the door standing to welcome me was my auntie’s children with broad smiles. It was wonderful feeling to see the familiar faces I have missed a lot. My auntie added warmth as she walked towards me to welcome me fondly calling me ‘koony’ -anchovies locally known as ‘ikan bilis’. My uncle drove to work on his Morris Minor after patting my head. I came to know my grandmother left for India arriving in Madras a day earlier than my departure. It was a moment of truth to see their faces, sit with them, talk and laugh. I told them of my adventure in the ship. They listened keenly as they didn’t get to experience because they travelled on cabin class. They told me about their experience too. Sleeping in air conditioned cabins, sipping orange juice, eating chicken briani served by white uniformed waiters, resting on deck chairs, and buying imported candies and biscuits at the ship’s shops. The following week, a new chapter started in my life. I was taught how to take a bus to the shipping office of my grandfathers. The Cook, cooking for the workers here will buy the marketing things for my aunty and I had to take it back by bus. The bus ride always gave a little freedom to enjoy the sounds and sights. I would get down in front of ‘Kapitan Keling Mosque’ in Pitt Street now referred to as Kapitan Keling Road. The state government had at last honoured the Kapitan by naming Pitt Street after him .Thanks for the thought the state government had. It’s better late than never. Talking of Kapitan Keling, it’s worth taking a ride back into history. The Kapitan Keling Mosque is arguably the best known mosque in Penang. It features a dome-shaped minaret reflecting Moorish Islamic influence. It was founded and financed by an Indian Muslim merchant in 1801 - Cauder Mydin Merican. He brought in the builders and stones from Ind

Historical Relic: Ancient Armor Short Review
    2007-07-20 03:03:00
Armor is any equipment of various materials, but generally of metal, used to protect a body in combat, covering for the body, worn when fighting. The oldest of protective devices is the shield; the earliest body armor was a wide belt to protect the abdomen. Ancient armor in ancient Egypt (c. 3000 BC) was a belt that was developed into a wraparound garment extending from armpits to knees,

An Historical Perspective on 30 Year Fixed Rate Mortgages
    2007-06-15 21:12:17
Real estate professionals monitor the current real estate market and the vital signs that cause the market to fluctuate. They accumulate information on the properties that are currently on the market and on the properties that have sold or been withdrawn from the market. They also keep a close watch on the current interest rates. This information is complied, dissected, mixed with the individual’s personal experience and with the experiences of other agents and brokers in their offices and then the assembled data is disseminated to current and potential customers and clients. There are numerous reasons that the markets fluctuate and one of the most constant factors in the housing market is the interest rate. Over the last several years many individuals have used creative forms of financing to allow them to procure properties that would not have been obtainable using conventional financing. As the interest rate moves up, these individuals begin to feel the pressure on their budge

Prasat Muang Singh Historical Park : Kanchanaburi
    2007-05-25 07:51:00
One of the most important sites found in the Khwae Noi River basin is an ancient city site named Muang Singh. The important discoveries made near the ancient city remains include prohistoric human skeletons together with metal tools, vessels and ornaments; brick bases of the Dvaravati period architecture; and the laterite ruins of the 13th century. This Muang Singh must have been an important outpost of Angkor as it was mentioned in the Prasat Phra Khan inscription made during the reign of King Jayavarman VII. At present, Muang Singh on the bank of Khwae Noi river is included in Muang Singh sub-district, Sai Yok district, Kanchanaburi Province. The vestiges of the ancient city comprise several layers of rectangular walls and moats, having Prasat Muang Singh in the middle. Other three lesser monuments in ruins are also found in the area. From the main monument has been discovered a number of Mahayana Buddhist images. The three lesser monuments could have been built in the same period a
