| Farewell Holland! | | 2008-06-22 04:45:00 | | ..Dmitri Torbinski strikes past Van der Sar to put Russia 2-1 up (©Getty Images)Sighh... What a dissapointing result for the Netherlands. They beat two 2006 World Cup finalist, Italy and France, comfortably in group stage, but end up losing to a relatively unknown Russia. Thank goodness I didn't watch the match as it would be more frustrating to watch your favourite team lose (Earlier on I watched how stupidly the Selangor team conceded defeat to Kedah in the FA Cup final even though they controlled 65% of the game plus playing against 10-man Kedah team in the last 20 minutes). But anyways, hats off to the Russian coach, Guus Hiddink for bringing the Russian team into the semis for the first time since the 1980s, I think...According to my mobile Google Maps (download it onto your mobile), this place is somewhere near Kampung Pasir Panjang, somewhere down south of Teluk Kemang, Port DicksonEuro 2008 aside, I had a great weekend with my friends at our usual annual retreat at Sri Pena Re | | By: books and coffee | | |

| Holland goes hup and out! | | 2008-06-21 17:21:55 | | Oh well, it was good while it lasted. The general consensus in our house was that the Russians were the better team. It could have been different, but then that's the stuff of football. The Dutch scored one goal, giving us an extra half hour for the equaliser, but it was the second half of extra time that clinched it. Maybe the Russians can go all the way. It's not a foregone conclusion who may yet win the final game. The Dutch did OK on the whole, but were not quite on top form tonight. It's hup and out and back home. They can be pleased the got to qualify, to get ten goals in the tournament, and to colour the place orange! Bravo! | | By: A View from Middle England by Arden Forester | | |

| Hup! Holland! Hup! (Part 2) | | 2008-06-21 05:42:16 | | The Euro 2008 shindig is hotting up. Turkey giving the Croats some pain. The French are out. Tonight it is Holland, as the footballing world call the Netherlands, probably because there are fewer syllables in it. The Dutch have done very well indeed. Nine goals - nine points. That's a winning formula. I shouldn't speak to soon. The opposition is Russian. Not a team to be underestimated. They will have "chances" no doubt.Watching on television I will have to hope the commentators don't gabble too much. When they say something or give an opinion, the complete opposite happens next. John Motson is a prime example - indubitably! One thing they haven't mastered yet is the pronunciation of the Dutch surnames of the players. My wife winces at the speech patterns. She tries it out on me. "Say Guus", she'll go. I try my best non-Sun attempt. The sting in the tail in all this is that the coach of the Russian team is Guus Hiddink, described as a coaching genius. Van Basten will need all the wily sk | | By: A View from Middle England by Arden Forester | | |

| The Fascinating Holland | | 2008-06-13 23:52:00 | | I was born seven years after Holland first took the football world by storm in 1974 with their super attacking concept known as the "Total Football". | Hollywood Comes To Holland, Michigan | | 2008-05-23 00:18:35 | | Where do you go to get Mr. Willis a double-tall half-calf iced latte in Holland, Michigan at 1:00 AM? Hundreds of newcomers to the business will get a chance to find out when production ramps up in Holland this year. Why is Hollywood making the migration to Holland, Michigan?
A number of states, including Michigan, are dramatically increasing the financial incentives offered to film productions the Wall Street Journal reports. How good is the deal? If your script is approved by the Michigan Film Office you'll get back 40% of your spend.Locals are already planning for a deluge of iPhone-wielding production executives. One enterprising local, Hopwood DePree, has converted an abandoned Reddi-wip factory (located in Holland) into a series of soundstages. Should you brave the Michigan winter for your 40% kickback? | Dutch Orange Day in New Holland | | 2008-04-27 04:11:00 | | April 30 in the Netherlands is known as Queen's Day (Koninginnedag in Dutch). The day is a public holiday to celebrate the Queens birthday. It's actually the birthday of the last queen (Juliana), but it is said that the current Queen (Beatrix) kept it in honour of her mother, and also because her birthday is in January, too chilly to be celebrating outdoors.Queen's Day is the biggest party of the year in the Netherlands, and on the day the streets resemble a huge market (vrijmarkt, or freemarket) as anyone can sell anything in the streets. | Holland America Is Still The Best Overall Cruise Value | | 2007-12-30 14:11:43 | | Holland America Line has once again been named as the Best Overall Cruise Value, making it 16 years in a row for the premium level cruise line. The award was given by World Ocean & Cruise Liner Society (WOCLS) members, who by most standards would be considered cruise experts as they all have cruised at least twice a year. That’s more than some travel agents who sell cruises on a regular basis. This award is justification that the new Signature of Excellemce program is garnering worldwide acceptance among veteran cruisers. The program is an excellent example of top of the line amenties at value driven pricing. Holland America remains competitive in all aspects of the cruise market. | | By: Your Cruise Your Way Cruise Blog - Best of Cruise | | |

| Russian Real Estate Grows St. Petersburg & Island New Holland | | 2007-10-02 11:21:00 | | The island of New Holland in the northeast Russian city of St. Petersburg was created by the convergence of two canals constructed by Peter the Great in 1721. For many years it has stood silent and underutilized, shrouded in mists and secrecy. Now, it is on its way to becoming a major redevelopment story in this historic city. This 18.8 acre mixed-use project will have cultural, retail, hotel and restaurant space and is scheduled for completion in 2010. Russian developer Shalva Chigrinsky is leading the project, and has chosen British architect Lord Norman Foster to create the design for this historic island. At a conference in Moscow, Foster noted that the intent of the design was “to create an urban magnet which will relate to the nearby Marrinsky Theater and the Hermitage, to establish a new cultural quarter of the city.”
