WP - Bronson Arroyo (7-7) LP - Ted Lilly (9-6) Save - None
The only thing missing on Thursday afternoon was the mechanical bull sounding off and smoke coming out of its nose....while Adam Dunn did not receive a free steak, he did hit the building across the street on Sheffield Avenue with a monster blast in the 5th inning. Six different Cincinnati Reds hit 7 home runs off of five different Cubs pitchers and the Cubs' offense could not keep up. The Reds avoided the sweep by pounding out 18 hits and scoring in all but two of the 9 innings.
The Cubs offense scored 7 runs on 9 hits but hit just one long ball, a 2-run homer by Mike Fontenot in the 4th inning. Ryan Theriot drove in a pair of runs with a clutch 2 out hit in the 2nd inning that gave the Cubs a brief 3-1 lead.
Ted Lilly gave up 3 runs in the 3rd before leaving with 2 outs and Michael Wuertz handed the Reds 4 more in the 4th. Fontenot's home run cut the deficit to 8-5 but the Reds hit 4 more h... | | By: Chicago Cubs Online
| | MANNY'S 500th Home Run! Boston 6 Baltimore 3 | | 2008-06-01 04:30:00 | | It was a festive night at Camden Yards (Fenway Park south) in Baltimore Saturday night as the Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles for the second time in two nights. The score was 6-3, good guys. When Manny Ramirez came up in the seventh inning, the many Sox fans in the stands knew that with one swing of his bat, baseball history could be made. The loud crack of bat against ball was clearly audible to all the lucky ones in attendance, and the ball traveled 415 feet to the right centerfield stands, right into the hands of a Red Sox fan who was gracious enough to give the ball to its rightful owner in exchange for a few autographed baseballs and bats. Quite a remarkable show of generosity and respect, if you ask me. Even Manny's wife was in the stands, and she was beaming. That the Sox won the game was just like icing on the cake. Sweet icing indeed, the kind that melts in your mouth with a blast of super sweetness. Here's what the MAN himself said after the game..."It was great, espec... | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |

| | Free MLB 2K8 downloads are a home run - SendMeRSS | | 2008-03-07 13:07:44 | | Free MLB 2K8 downloads are a home runFiled under: News, Xbox Live MarketplaceMajor League Baseball 2K8 has been on retail shelves for all of a few days and already 2K Sports has released downloadable content to the XBLM. Usually we'd be angry when a developer releases new DLC the same week the game comes out, because A) it should have been included on the disc and B) we know they simply want to make a few bucks off the held back content. But, in this case, it's actually a good thing because the MLB 2K8 content is free. W00t, w00t! So, if you picked up you copy of MLB 2K8 this week and live in the U.S. or Canada, head to the XBLM and get your three free MLB 2K8 DLC downloads including the 2K8 Minor League Stadium Pack, Majestic Cool Base Uniforms and the Card Series 2 roster update. | | The Oakland A’s Walk-off Home Run Index | | 2008-01-31 11:15:08 | | The walk-off home run. Baseball’s version of sudden death. Few moments in sports are as dramatic. Dennis Eckersley coined the term in the late 80s, describing how the defense would walk off the field following the game-ending hit. Since then, it’s become more suited to describing how the batter can walk around the bases to [...]... | | By: The Pastime | | |

| How Far Did That Home Run Travel? This Guy Knows! | | 2007-12-31 05:00:00 | | Good morning!! This is from Monday's Boston Globe...."Greg Rybarczyk has a day job. But most of all, he digs the long ball, and he has devoted much of his spare time to tracking home runs, creating a tool, the Hit Tracker, that he says calculates the precise trajectory of every home run hit in the big leagues."I'm not sure why exactly I got into the home run thing, it's probably a combination of things," said Rybarczyk...."Peter here, and I'll link the entire article, which even includes a link to his "hit tracker" website, and it will be available when you click on the title of this post. But aren't we all curious to know, after watching one of our favorite Sox players crush a ball out of the park, just exactly how far that round leather stitched object traveled? From its point of impact with the wood of the bat to the spot where it lands, somewhere in Fenway Park, or better yet, somewhere on the surrounding streets, there has never been an EXACT scientific method for measuring the distance traveled. It's not as if a ball boy or girl can run out onto the field of play, metallic tape measure in hand, and my goodness, it had better be a LONG one, and then climb into the stands to get an exact flight path measurement while holding up the flow of the game for five or ten minutes. No, that won't work. So that's why Greg's concept interests me, and I too am going back to read the entire Globe article and then click on the provided link to go to his actual website. Yes, it's all there, when you click on the title!Muct more importantly, I wanted to wish you, my Constant Readers, a happy New Year's Eve Day. In yesterday's post, I had a few things mixed up...I originally thought yesterday, Sunday, was New Years Eve day, but a comment from blogger and friend Laura (she and her blog are on my link list...just scroll down a little on the right hand side of this page--look for her first name) set me straight. TODAY is New Year's Eve day, and it's Monday, December 3... | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |
| | Manny Walk-Off Home Run Powers Red Sox To Victory Over Angels For 2-0 ALDS Lead | | 2007-10-06 12:17:00 | | ****THE MAGIC MANNY MISSLE MOMENT****It was the bottom of the ninth inning, two men were on base, at first and third, there were two outs and Manny was striding towards the plate after Big Papi David Ortiz was again (and again) intentionally walked. The score was tied at three, and if ever there was a time for a "MANNY MOMENT," this was it. And then CRACK, BOOM, and Manny hit an absolute bomb OVER EVERYTHING in left. It was a walk-off three run home run, a true "Manny Moment," his first walk off homer since he joined the Sox and his first ever post season one. Needless to say, the team poured out of the dugout and the bullpen to join Manny as he reached home plate, and jubilation was in full force, on the field and everywhere in Red Sox Nation and Red Sox International. Said the man himself....."It's been a long time I don't do something special like that," Ramirez said. "I haven't been right all year round. But I guess, when you don't feel good and you still get hits, that's when you know you're a bad man."You MIGHT be a "bad man," Manny, but you're OUR "bad man," and we love you. In terms of pitching, Daisuke Matsuzaka did not have a good night, going only 4 2/3 innings, throwing 96 pitches and allowing 4 runs on 3 hits and an unnecessary 3 walks. He was not sharp, but the Boston bullpen showed why it's the league's best, going the final 4 1/3 innings without allowing a hit. Kudos go out to Javy Lopez, Manny Delcarmen, Hideki Okajima, who seems like his 10 day rest really helped, and Jonathon Papelbon, who earned the victory. Great job guys! The club wings to California to join Josh Beckett and game #3 starter Curt Schilling, already there, who will try to make it a three game sweep Sunday afternoon. Oh, I almost forgot, the Indians again beat the visiting Yankees 2-1 in extra innings to forge ahead 2 games to none. The bug invasion must have bothered Yankee reliever Joba Chamberlin, but what he showed to me is this....the man the Yankees and their fans pin their 8th inning hopes on has a lot of growing up to do. Please click on the title of this post for more on the Manny missle, and enjoy this off day Saturday. Bask with me in the glow, the warm fuzzy memories of last night's walk-off win, which seemed like a dream to me upon first awakening this early weekend morning, but which was all too real, or surreal, depending on how you look at it. Any way you view it, Sox fan or not (?), it's what baseball 2007 Red Sox style is all about! GO SOX! FOREVER. AND EVER. To be continued, for the story is far from over. 2 down, 9 to go for immortality.... | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |

| | Barry Bonds and his Home Run Record | | 2007-08-11 06:02:36 | | Listen, I don’t really care about the home run race nor do I give a crap about Barry Bonds and his steroid case. If you look at the facts of the case - which is, admittedly, still pending - it’s obvious that this man took “performance enhancing drugs.” Just look at the before [...]... | | By: Joe's Journal | | |
| | Barry Bonds Home Run Ball Bedlam + His Other Mode of Cheating | | 2007-08-08 21:08:34 | | Known steroid user Barry Bonds last night broke Henry Aaron’s all-time career home run record, whacking number 756 in front of the home crowd at AT&T Ballpark (formerly Pac Bell Park and SBC Park).

| | | | The New Home Run King, Courtesy of Bud Selig | | 2007-07-17 17:48:00 | | Barry Bonds is probably the best player of our generation, if not one of the all-time greats. Sure, he's an a-hole but so was Ty Cobb and Ted Williams. He certainly isn't alone in the steroid scandal, I mean look at Jason Giambi (any else notice how much Pudge Rodriguez has shrunk in the last two seasons?) But that doesn't make what he did right. McGuire, Giambi, Bonds, Conseco - they are all cheaters. We, the fans, as well as pitchers in MLB, were ripped off.All of the problems that have come with this scandal, whether or not their records are tainted, etc. all point to the main problem as far as I am concerned - poor leadership. Namely, the worst commissioner in the history of league, Bud Selig. He threw Faye Vincent out of the commissioner's office because Faye wanted better labor relations and a tougher drug policy. He has let the Union push him around on drug testing. He is too weak to address real problems and take action. Bowie Kuhn would have tossed all these assholes out on ... | | By: Genius of Love | | |
| | Home Run Derby/Late Night Open Thread | | 2007-07-10 02:43:44 | |
Gah. Chris Berman, Dusty Baker, Joe Morgan, and Kenny Mayne in a kayak. Why don't they just bring out Gene Keady and Dick Cheney and make my evening complete?
I'm cheering for Ryan Howard (even though I really don't care about the stupid HR Derby, but it's pouring outside and there's nothing better on), because, through the magic of his Subway commercials, I discovered that he was adorable.
I just want to add that Barry Bonds has the most hilarious, highest voice I've ever heard on someone on roids. Hahahahahahahaha.
It's Monday night. . . and this is your open thread.

| | Sammy Sosa Hits Home Run #600 | | 2007-06-21 04:59:08 | | Welcome to the 600 Club, Sammy.
Sammy Sosa drilled his 600th career home run tonight, on a 1-2 pitch from Cubs’ starter Jason Marquis in the 5th inning. As the ball came off his bat and took off towards the right-center field fence, Sammy did his trademark hop into the air, and he raised his fist triumphantly when the ball landed in the Rangers’ bullpen. Akinori Otsuka came up with the baseball, grinning widely as he held the ball up like a trophy.
Let’s be honest here: Sammy’s not having a real great season. He’s hitting just .241/.298/.448, and his defense is barely passable in right field. The Texas Rangers are going nowhere this year, and Sammy’s unlikely to return next year. This team needs to move forward with Jason Botts at DH and see what happens, lest we give away another Adrian Gonzalez or Travis Hafner.
With all that being said though, this was an incredibly cool moment. Sammy comes with his share of baggage, but I find it impossible to di... | | By: Baseball Time in Arlington
