    Homemade Cafe
    2010-12-31 11:30:00
Homemade Cafe is located on the corner of Sacramento and Dwight in Berkeley, California. The exact address is 2454 Sacramento Street. The phone number is 510-845-1940.Restaurant hours are Monday - Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.This is a great breakfast place. They serve traditional American breakfasts in huge portions (typical American-sized portions!). I often refer to this place as a "greasy spoon," but only in the most loving way. When close friends come to visit from out of town, they'll often ask me to take them to "that little breakfast place on some corner." This is not a place to impress your friends and colleagues with ambiance, but with the yummy food. (If you wanna impress your friends with a delicious breakfast and a bit more ambiance, head over to La Note on Shattuck.)You may have to share a larger table with strangers and you'll have to get your own coffee and water refills, but it's worth it. For extra entertainment, get a seat at the counter so you can watch the scraggly cooks work their magic and marvel at how their arms don't have more burns. Try not to get too stressed out about all the butter that goes into the preparation of the delicious home potatoes.A Homemade Cafe menu is coming soon....

    2008-04-22 21:02:00
My skin... my skin, my skin, my skin! Well, my skin has always been something which got alot of attention from me since I was... Oh well since I was about 15? As I mentioned I suffered from moderate acne thru-out my teen years. Thank god that is over and it's under control a.k.a. pretty much gone!Skin care... make up, potions and lotions, creams, gels, sprays, mouses... It can all be a bit confusing, so let me simplify things and try and guide you thru it with what I have learned thruout my last years of experimenting. All facial masks (homemade and also store bought) should stay on for 10-15 minutes, should be followed with a cleansing and a thin layer of moisturizer. If you have make up on, remove it before applying the mask of course. The mask for today is called an "Orange Smoothy" mask.Ingredients:1 tabelspoon of Honey1 tabelspoon plain yogurtjuice of 1/4 orange Why honey you ask? Well, basicly, honey is a natural antiseptic/anti-bacterial, so it's helpful with blemishes. It's also ...

Make your own spoon lure (homemade lures)
    2008-01-30 23:38:07
If you cut the handle from an old spoon from your kitchen, you can make two lures - one from the handle and one from the bowl (the bit you eat off). If holes are drilled through both ends of the bowl section and split rings attached with a hook at one end and a swivel at the other, an excellent spoon lure will result.Similarly the handle can be drilled and fitted out with swivels, rings and hooks. The handle can then be bent slightly to give the lure some extra action. These can then be painted all over or perhaps simply add an eye or some scales to make the lure more lifelike. A touch of red paint behind the eyes will represent gills. While these lures seem crude they have been around for a very long time and they have been around for so long because they actually work!Hopefully this picture will give you a better idea of the process (imagine this is the bowl of the spoon)....

    Homemade Roasted Granola/Müsli
    2008-01-15 07:30:57
I don't like porridge,Skinny and brown;Waiting for breakfastWhen I come down-Whatever happens,However late,Porridge is alwaysSure to wait! This is the beginning of a poem, published in one of my first English schoolbooks. Although it is from 1956 or so, I can still remember it.Nowadays, I don't have to eat porridge for breakfast unless I want to. It is not exactly my favorite breakfast food.A couple of years ago I started to make my own chewy and crunchy granola, or müsli as we say in Sweden. Making your own is less expensive than buying it. Each batch makes enough to last about two-three weeks for me and my husband. We mix it with milk or yogurt, and sometimes with pieces of fresh fruit or berries. My husband eats it as a snack too.It can be varied and personalized to your own taste by adding flax seeds, sesame seeds, dried raisins, shredded coconut, honey, ground cardamom ....INGREDIENTS:about 1500 ml/1,5 liter* 1 l (1000 ml) rolled oats (porridge oats)* 4 dl (400 ml) rye flakes* 2 dl (200 ml) sun flower seeds* 1 dl (100 ml) hazelnuts or almonds, chopped* 1 dl (100 ml) water* 1 dl (100 ml) maple syrup or golden syrup* 2 tablespoons vegetable oil* 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon* 10 dried apricots, finely choppedMETHOD:1. Preheat the oven to 200°C, or 400°F2. Combine and spread all the dry ingredients out on a large sheet pan - except from the dried apricots.3. Whisk together water, syrup, oil and cinnamon in a bowl.4. Pour this mixture over the müsli (muesli) and stir around.5. Roast in the middle of the oven for about 20-25 minutes.6. Meanwhile, stir the mixture at least three times to avoid burning.7. Once the müsli (muesli) turns golden brown, remove from oven, stir in chopped apricots, let cool, and store in an airtight container.Enjoy your breakfast! It is the most important meal of the day.http://minareceptsamlingar.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss ...

Homemade Plush Toys - Flake Style
    2008-01-07 08:59:00
My fingers are on fire. Last night I stayed up till 2 am working on my latest craze - plush toys, and my fingers turned into pincushions. I've been looking at all the Etsy shops lately and realized that everything plush is selling. So why not my plush toys? I've determined to be the next big toy maker. I got off to somewhat of a bumpy start last night. After some extravagant shopping at the fabric store, I had no reason not to make the next best thing since the teddy bear. Instead, I ended up with a sad, chunky manatee. She didn't end up at all like I'd envisioned - I've discovered the the second you put stuffing inside a toy they take on a personality of their own and no amount of cajoling can make them something they are not. I've named her Gwendolyn. Cher loves her to no end. I'm especially smug about the "Girls Scout Days '98 - San Antonio Sea World" patch on her rump. I'm going to run to Rite Aid today and get her some great fake eyelashes to sew on.Another really simple idea I have for gifts (boutique selling?) are the chromosome pillows. They take about 10 minutes to make and I think they are really cute. Do me a favor, everyone. Tell me if this is something that would catch your attention in a shop (either for babies or friends) and tell me how much you would pay for the XX or XY set. I'm thinking of doing the XY set in some kind of manly fabric like camo or faux leather. These are really plushy and great for little kids to snuggle around. So tell me, am I the only geek who thinks decorating with chromosomes could be the next big thing?I've got five huge bags of great fabric in my closet and can't wait to get started on more projects! I'm going to open up an Etsy shop as soon as I have ten or so items and see if the world approves of my juvenile sewing skills. Any ideas for a brand name? Flakey Friends? Flake Made? This is going to be so fun!...

Homemade Fruit and Nut Spiced Cereal Bars (Fig and Date Bars)
    2007-12-18 14:09:54
As a child, I wasn't too careful about what went into my system early in the morning, and trying to get ready to reach my school in time never made breakfast a priority for me. Even when my mom and dad kept pestering me to eat properly and chew my food, most of the days I ate a slice of bread washed down with a cup of chocolate milk!! But as I grew up and became a bit more sane, I realised that breakfasts were the most important meal of the day, and it pays to make a healthy start. This led to discovery of cereals, and when I laid my eyes on the flavorful, tasty and healthy POST Cereals, I had found my paradise!! My love (or shall I say, my sanity?) for eating healthy, at least when I can, kept growing, and now I make it a point to keep some protein and cereal/granola bars handy in my purse or my office drawer so I don't have to binge on junk food in times of dire need! But buying those bars regularly can be an expensive affair, and when you realize that they are actually pretty simp...

    Gluten-Free Gems... Homemade Graham Crackers
    2007-09-13 16:06:00
I have been getting quite a few query hits on my blog relating to gluten-free recipes and a number of emails with questions about gluten-free living at our house, so I thought I would start a little segment of my blog called 'Gluten-Free Gems'. Basically, it will consist of little tips or tricks I have been slowly picking up on toddler-friendly gluten free living . (I should note here that my daughter is also on a casein-free diet for her CVS , so anything I post will be both gluten and casein free).So... whenever the whim strikes me, I will post either a recipe, a product find, or some little tip I have found useful. We'll see how popular the topic is, and go from there. Just so you know, I don't keep gluten-free recipes unless they pass taste tests by our non-gluten restricted family members, so everything you find here should taste great by any standard. If you have problems with any recipe, email me and I will do my best to help you trouble shoot. By popular request, my first post in this topic will be my recipe for gluten-free/casein-free graham crackers. If you would like to read the post that started it all, click here - enjoy!(Note: Even though Jacqui didn't eat the gluten-free graham crackers on our camping trip, she really does like them, usually eats them really well - and they are extremely good! She was just overwhelmed by the temptation of an un-attended box of the chocolate flavored Honey-Maids (must have gotten that choco-holic gene from me). My husband even likes this homemade version better than the boxed store brands. I actually have to hide them so he doesn't eat the poor kid's graham crackers!)Better Than The Real Thing - Gluten-Free Grahams1/3 cup shortening or margerine3/4 cup brown sugar2 tsp. vanilla3 cups Pamela's Ultimate Pancake and Baking Mix (or substitute: 2/3 cup bean flour, 1/3 cup sorghum flour, 1 cup tapioca flour, 1 cup cornstarch, plus 1 tsp baking powder)1 tsp xanthan gum2 tsp cinnamon1/2 tsp. ginger1/4 tsp nutmeg1/2 tsp salt1/2 cup rice milk3-4 Tbsp Cornstarch for rolling1/3 cup granulated sugar for sprinklingPreheat oven to 350 Degrees.Cream together shortening or margerine with brown sugar and vanilla in a large bowl.Mix in spices, salt and xanthan gum.Add Pamela's Mix (or substitute flour mixture) one cup at a time, blending in well with a fork or pastry cutter until all 3 cups have been incorporated.Add rice milk (may substitute water, soy milk, etc.) a little at a time. You may not need the entire 1/2 cup. Add just enough to make a cookie dough consistency (will be quite sticky) .Separate dough into tennis-ball size portions, flatten, wrap in wax paper and chill 2-3 hours until firm.Working with one section of dough at a time, roll out on cornstarch dusted surface to a thickness of 1/8 inch. Cut with 3- 1/4 inch size fluted round cutter and transfer to silpat or parchment lined baking sheet with cornstarch dusted pancake turner or spatula. (You can use a cookie sheet sprayed lightly with cooking spray, but they do cook more evenly on the silpat or parchment when you are going for a crisper cracker.) I place 8 cookies per sheet.Prick each cookie 4-6 times with a fork and sprinkle with granulated sugar.Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes at 350 degrees or untill edges have lightly browned. the longer they bake, the crisper the cracker and they do harden some as they cool. You may have to experiment a little to find your preference in baking time. (We like ours super-crunchy and actually bake them for around 35-40 minutes)Store in air-tight container - perfect for S'mores!Makes about 2 1/2 dozenAdapted from combination of Pamela's Mix Graham Cracker recipe and Bette Hagman's Graham Cracker recipe from 'The Gluten-Free Gourmet Bakes Bread'.Note: I think they do turn out a little better (a little lighter and flavor is slightly different) with the Pamela's Mix - plus the mix makes excellent pancakes too. You may be able to find the mix less expensively than the link I provided at your local specialty grocer's. The mix also comes in 64 oz bags, which is how I purchase mine. I use it for flour bases for everything from pancakes, to muffins, to crackers, to breads. It really is an excellent mix! This recipe also works well substituting 1/4 cup honey for the brown sugar, although they will not be as sweet. For a less sweet cracker you can also cut the sugar down. The original recipe called for 1/2 cup of granulated sugar.Special Thanks to Jordan at 'MammaBlogga' for challenging me to expand my writing topics with 'this post'.parenting children motherhood kids recipes gluten free gluten-free graham crackers SAHM ...

    Homemade Mushroom Ravioli
    2007-09-06 07:45:00
I've blogged before about the joys of making your own pasta.  It is time consuming, but it's something the whole family can enjoy and get in on.  My three year old gets so excited when she sees the machine come out and is actually able to crank the handle with a little guidance.  Don't go spending a fortune on a pasta machine either! I got mine at Aldi for €9.99 and it works just as well as the $100 one I had from Williams Sonoma when we lived in the states! The pasta recipe itself is very simple.  100g of '00 or pasta flour to every large room-temperature free-range egg, a pinch of salt and a drizzle of olive oil.   Just make a mountain of flour.  I have 400g here.  I put it on a glass board, which has a damp tea towel under it so it won't slip.     Whisk your eggs, olive oil and salt together. Make a well in the center and slowly pour in the egg mixture.  You can also crack each individual egg into the flour if you prefer, bu...

Easy Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream & Strawberries
    2007-08-28 14:57:48
INGREDIENTS:serves 4* 4 egg yolks, preferably free range* 4 tablespoons sugar, or icing sugar* 4 dl whipping cream* 1 vanilla bean, or 1 tablespoon vanilla sugar* 1 liter (1000 ml) fresh strawberries* 4 tablespoons orange liqueurMETHOD:1. Cut vanilla bean open and scrape out the seeds.2. Beat the egg yolks with sugar and vanilla.3. Whip the cream and fold it into the egg mixture.4. Pour your prepared mixture into a wide plastic freezer container.5. Put it, covered, into your freezer for a couple of hours.Optional: You may take the ice cream out of the freezer after 30-40 minutes, break up the ice crystals by beating it and making it smooth again, and repeat this now and then. However, there is really no need to stir this ice cream while it freezes. I don´t do that. When there are so many egg yolks in the ice cream mixture, I find it unnecessary.TO MAKE THE DESSERT:1. Soak the strawberries in orange liqueur and place them, covered, in the refrigerator for an hour or more. Gently stir around now and then, without mashing the strawberries.2. Place the strawberries in serving glasses and spoon the ice cream on top.So, even if you are not the owner of an ice cream maker, and even if you only got a refrigerator with a small freezer, you can easily make a delicious strawberry ice cream dessert.Parfait or ice cream?Perhaps you prefer to call this "ice cream" a "parfait" instead. That´s fine with me. I find the difference between "parfait" and "ice cream" exceedingly fine. In Sweden, a parfait is always made with cream and has a creamy, porous texture. It seems to me that in English it has several meanings. The more I read about the difference, all the more the English meaning of the words "ice cream" and "parfait" puzzles me. Can anyone explain, please?http://minareceptsamlingar.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss...

    Homemade Mattress Topper
    2007-07-21 17:41:24
Splurging on mattress toppers may not be feasible for some people so why not create one for less than $10? Here’s a great idea from Thrifty Fun: Collect or purchase new low cost bed pillows, standard or queen size; fiber filled ones usually run $2.00 each or use old ones you already have that have gone flat. Collect enough, approximately 9-15 pillows. Stitch together sides and ends in a vertical manner, much like a quilt is prepared. You have now created a topper! Cover with a bed sheet when in use and store in a plastic comforter bag.Much less expense and just as comfy as a faux feather bed topper! If you have pets in the house, this would be useful for them. via Thrifty Fun mattress accessories, MATTRESS Animal, MATTRESS DIY, MATTRESS Shopping, mattress tips, mattress toppers. homemade mattress topper...

Banana Split & Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream
    2007-07-14 11:46:13
Warning! This blog post is probably not going to be worth reading for those who count weightwatchers points :).For generations ice cream has been the perfect ending to a feast meal. Today´s modern industrially-produced ice cream is not associated with feast any longer. However, homemade ice cream is very easy to make. I have a Philips ice cream maker. I must admit, it is usually a "shelf-warmer", which means, I don´t use it that often. But homemade ice cream with fine dairy products can become "a dessert for a king".Banana SplitServes 2 non-weightwatching peopleINGREDIENTS:* 4 egg yolks *from happy hens* 1 1/4 dl (125 ml) sugar* 2 teaspoons * Vanilla sugar* 2 dl (200 ml) whipping cream* 2 dl milk (200 ml)DECORATIONS:* 2 bananas* ½-1 dl (50 ml-100 ml) whipping cream* fruit and berriesMETHOD:1. Beat egg yolks and sugar until creamy and frothy.2. Stir in whipping cream and milk.3. Do not beat any more, just stir until everything is well mixed.4. Remove your cooling container from the freezer and insert it.5. Switch on the ice cream maker.6. Slowly pour in your ice cream mixture through the hole of the lid.7. Let your ice cream maker operate for 25-40 minutes.8. Peel the bananas, cut them lengthwise, and place the halves on a plate.9. Scoop the ice cream between the banana halves, and decorate with whipped cream, fruits and berries.* OR cut open a vanilla bean lengthwise, place the bean in the milk, and bring the milk to the boil. Allow the milk too cool, and scrape the seeds from the pod. Then add the milk to the egg mixture.* use an eggbase that has been heated to a temperature of 160 F [ab. 71 C] , if you are uncertain of the quality of the eggs.July is National Ice Cream Month in a certain part of the world (USA), and the third Sunday of July is National Ice Cream Day. A designation made by late President Ronald Regan back in 1984. How do Americans celebrate Ice Cream Day and Ice Cream Month? I am curious. Anybody know? When in Rome, I did as most Romans seemed to do. I had Ice Cream Day every day. I know, ice cream has lots of calories, but a genuine Italian gelato contains no cream. Genuine gelato has "more taste and less fat". Ice cream has "more fat and less taste".There are gelaterias everywhere, and the doors are often wide-open.I checked out the offerings, stopped by the cash register, told them what I liked to have; a cone or a cup, large, medium or small. Then I paid, and was given a receipt. This receipt I presented at the ice cream counter, where I could choose from the flavors. A ceremonious way to buy ice cream, but it was overwhelming to choose from about 60 different flavors.http://minareceptsamlingar.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss...

    Homemade Coconut Milk
    2007-05-01 11:08:00
Living in a country far away from palm-trees and coconuts, having a husband who does not like coconut milk/cream available in cans from supermarkets. What to do when a recipe calls for coconut milk/cream? When Christmas time comes around, I can buy real coconuts. The seed is surrounded by a buoyant and impervious fibrous husk. I have tried to break through that hard husk once. I am not going to do it again. What a mess! Three "eyes" on the husk suggest a monkey´s face, hence the genius name Cocos, which is the Portuguese word for "grinning face".How about making your own from coconut flakes? (French: Noix de coco rapée; German: Kokosraspel)METHOD I1. Bring 3 dl (300 ml) whipping cream and 3 dl (300 ml) milk to a boil.2. Pour in 200 grams (ab. 650-700 ml) of coconut flakes.3. Stir and set aside for ab. 5 minutes.4. Pour mixture into a blender and run.5. Strain through a piece of muslin cloth, gather the ends of the cloth together and squeeze it in your fist to extract the liquid OR st...

    Homemade fresh cheese
    2007-04-12 11:43:00
The use of cheese dates back to the ancient world. It is mentioned in the Bible, as well as in Greek and Arabian legends. However, cheese as we know it today was developed in Europe, introduced by Arab traders. Most cheeses are made from pasteurized milk. Cheese has long been called the perfect food as it is high in milk proteins, minerals and vitamins. If I were to invite you for dinner I would most certainly serve you some delicious cheeses between the main meal and dessert. To make your own fresh cheese is not difficult at all. My recipe of fresh cheese calls for "filmjölk" and "gräddfil"; milk products some of you may not know about. I´ll try to explain."Filmjölk" (fat: 3%) is a fermented soured milk product that has a clean and mild flavor, similar to cultured buttermilk; although buttermilk is thinner and a little more sour. "Filmjölk" contains living bacteria. You can drink buttermilk but "filmjölk" needs a spoon."Gräddfil" (fat: 12 %) is a cultured milk product made by cur...
