| Honor Killings: No Outcry, As It Is Acceptable? | | 2008-07-09 10:35:00 | | Honor Killings, Honor Killings. Who wants an Honor Killing? And with a complete LACK of any serious outcry to boot. None what so ever. Not from any International Human or Women's rights organizations. None. Where is N.O.W. when you actually want them around?I don't hear the many nations of the U.N. condemning the act, or similar acts. (Not that that is any surprise, by any means.)No backlash by "moderate" muslims, calling for equality for women. Or any equality at all for that matter. The silence, especially on that last note, can be deafening. But when you consider that under Sharia Law, honor killings are COMPLETELY ACCEPTABLE, it's not surprising me that there is complete silence on the issue. So, what of this latest honor killing? A Pakistani immigrant, Chaudhry Rashid, is now facing some serious charges, including murder, for the death of his 25-year old daughter (Sandeela Kanwal) in Clayton County, Georgia. | | | Worlds of Honor Anthology by David Weber | | 2008-06-22 10:21:00 | | Number 2 in the Worlds of Honor Series.Five stories from the David Weber Honor Harrington universe.“The Stray” by Linda Evans.“What Price Dreams” by David Weber“Queen’s Gambit” by Jane Lindskold“The Hard Way Home” by David Weber“Deck Load Strike” by Roland J. GreenI don’t usually read short stories. I find my subscription to Analog easily satisfies my appetite in that area. I am really glad I read this anthology. Linda Evan did a terrific story on treecats as did David Weber. Lindskold did a good political piece on Manticore. “The Hard Way Home” gave us another glimpse of Honor which is always good. “Deck Load Strike” was the weak link. It was ok but didn’t hit me like the other four stories. Treecat stories will apparently always appeal to me as those on Honor Harrington, the space faring Horatio Hornblower. Weber’s skills in entertaining are difficult to surpass. Read this book.Body of work of David WeberReview from Publishers WeeklyIt is Weber's | | By: Pick of the Literate | | |

| | The Boston Red Sox To Honor The World Champion Boston Celtics | | 2008-06-20 04:40:00 | | By now on this Friday morning, you all know that the Boston Celtics won the NBA championship by humiliating the LA Lakers. Since the turn of the century, Boston has six world titles among the four major sports (baseball, football, hockey and basketball). No other city can make the same claim, and we here in New England and all of Red Sox Nation and Red Sox International should be proud. I know I sure am. It's only the fourth time an NBA team won it all in the same city as the previous World Series champions. That's something very special. And tonight, before the game with the St. Louis Cardinals, the Sox will honor the "Green Team" with a pre-game ceremony that will be attended by all the Celtics. And that's just great. Here are some thoughts from Kevin Youkilis and his manager, Terry Francona..."I think in this city right now, there's a certain air of confidence you have to have to play in this city and I think that the big thing is, the Celtics have that," Francona said.
| | Iacocca FTW! Chrysler to honor former exec with rally | | 2008-06-11 05:56:00 | | Lee Iacocca is a smart man. Father of both the Mustang and the minivan, the well revered auto exec was Chrysler's savior in the '80s. As such, the current Chrysler LLC will be holding a rally to honor its former patriarch on June 26th at its headquarters in Auburn Hills, MI. The rally will be attended by employees and Iacocca himself (no word on whether his BFF Snoop Dogg will make an appearance). Today's Chrysler, of course, bears little resemblance to the strong automaker helmed by Iacocca in the '80s. During the '90s, Chrysler followed its Big 3 brothers down a path of big pickups and SUVs for which now they are all paying dearly, and Iacocca made no bones about his feelings toward Daimler after the German automaker cut and ran away from their "merger of equals", saying in an interview with BusinessWeek last year that "Daimler screwed Chrysler royally." We can't help but wonder how the 84-year-old would run his old automaker today if given the reigns, but chances are he wouldn't wa | | By: Car News | | |

| | Welsh Criminals Asked: ‘Court or a Pub Ban?’ Answer: ‘Good morning your honor!’ | | 2008-06-06 06:46:10 | | Booze and really sloppy crime seem to go hand-in-hand. We’ve documented this heavily in “The Man Who Scared a Shark to Death (and other true tales of drunken debauchery”, particularly in the section “Crime Doesn’t Pay Your Bar Tab”, and we’re presented with constant reminders of the truth of it on a regular basis. Drunk criminals, it must be said, do offer society the bonus of being easy to catch, both because they’re quick to lose their wind when chased and also because they – like the drunk in our book who left a trail of red paint running from the bank he had just robbed to the pub where he was drinking up his haul – are just really not the most formidable criminal masterminds of our times. If you’re a proprietor of a bar, the sheer volume of drunks you have to deal with pretty much guarantees that you will come into contact with at least one arsehole a day, and if you’re really unlucky, said arsehole will have a similar outlook in like to that of Irvine | | By: The Shark Guys | | |

| | | Gift Card Alert: Linens and Things to honor Gift Cards during Bankruptcy | | 2008-05-08 21:00:50 | | Here is some good news for Linens n’ Things gift card holders. The company will continue to honor gift cards despite the recent bankruptcy filing.
According to a story on Promo Magazine’s website, Linens n’ Things has received approval from the bankruptcy court to allow customers to continue redemption of gift cards and coupons. As you may recall, i posted a story a few days ago about the company filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
This is also good news for Linens n’ Things since I believe it will enable the company retain some of its current customers, prevent the competition from exploiting its misfortune (as Brookstone tried to do with The Sharper Image recently), project some sense of business as usual, and also attract new customers since their gift cards are popular. | | By: Gift Card Blog - Compare gift cards, plus gift car

Via: As.com | | By: Gente Dl SuR

The story moves on with Robert Ford a.k.a. as Bob having killed Wood (Jeremy Renner), Jesse’s cousin in an awkward gun fight. Jesse’s pretty much a ruthless murderer himself, having executed Bob’s cousin, Ed Miller (Gerard Dillahunt) in cold blood. The two Ford brothers do not trust Jesse & they think that he will kill them anyway after the planned bank robbery together. The maid of honor will likely be spending a great deal of time with the best man, since their duties are often the same and require them to work hand-in-hand in order for the wedding to be a success. Once you have dealt with the excitement of being part of the wedding party and of wearing a great dress, it's time to start planning immediately. Here is a list of common duties the maid of honor must fulfill:1. It is the maid of honor's responsibility to shop with the bride and attend all dress fittings. The maid of honor may want to help the bridesmaids shop for their dresses as well.2. The maid of honor will be required to help with wedding invitations, wedding favors, flower arrangements, centerpieces or anything else at the bride's request.3. So did the instruction manual. So did EA's website. EA admitted the documentation errors, apologized for any confusion their mistake may have created for consumers, and offered to give folks their money back. All of which is exactly the right thing to do, but why'd they take the online out in the first place? | | The "Day of Honor" in Budapest | | 2008-02-10 07:10:00 | | Every year Hungarian and foreign skinheads remember February 11 1945, when German and Hungarian troops attempted to break out of the Soviet siege in Budapest. The memorial which took place on Heroes Square, was registered by DOMOKOS Endre János who was the leader of the Hungarian Blood and Honor (Vér és Becsület) association. This organisation was dissolved by the court few years ago because, let's say, their memorandum of foundation didn't really "match" the Constitution. The event is always in the focus of the media since showing thousands of skinheads marching and holding flags looks impressive on the newspaper covers. This day (or as the organisers call it the "Day of Honor") is of course followed by counter demonstrations, this year by a peaceful flash mob and by a noisy demonstration of punks anarchists.click here for pictures | | By: The blog of Hungary

| | Honor and "The Code" | | 2008-01-07 19:33:07 | | The donnybrook at Culver brings into sharp focus the issue of honor and codes of conduct. It also highlights the importance of having three officials on the ice at all times, but that's another story. I must start by saying that I am not speaking for my team or my son. The views expressed in this post are mine alone, but I hope they might lead to positive and constructive discussions. Most hockey fanatics understand if not appreciate the role of fighting in the sport. They understand it to be a deterrent of exceptionally vicious or careless behavior on the ice. The thinking goes that when players know they will be held accountable for their actions on the ice, they will be restrained and more often play within the rules. I don't think it always turns out this way, but I do support the use of measured force to prevent injury, to protect oneself, and to protect one's teammates. The problem is, in my estimation, that learning when and how to defend one's honor or the honor of one's team is a precarious process. While I want young men to experience the passion of a cause worth championing, I don't want them to lose the very thing which defines their character. Honor and integrity are not inconsequential concepts. In their rush to defend an ideal, they can trample it just the same.So what is honor as related to hockey? In short, I'd say it's behaving within the rules of the game as well as respecting the game itself and everyone associated with it (players, officials, coaches, spectators, etc). USA Today quotes a few rules by Ross Bernstein, author of The Code: The Unwritten Rules of Fighting and Retaliation in the NHL. Seeing as how none of these kids are in the NHL (yet), I'd like to highlight a few ideas that can help maintain dignity and honor for themselves and the game.Just because someone's chirping doesn't mean you have to take the bait. Se trataba de un simulacro ordenado por Estados Unidos para proteger a los invasores de Girón, que ellos conocen como Bahía de Cochinos.Tú marchaste, Sergio, con Camilo hacia Pinar del Río en la Columna Invasora. | | | Broncos Honor Their Fallen Teammates | | 2007-10-22 14:49:29 | | Denver Post/Karl GehringForgive me if I am late getting to the party. Such comes with the territory of living 1500 miles away. The Broncos honored the families of Darrent Williams and Damien Nash last night, though you'd be hard-pressed to know based on NBC's TV Coverage. That might have been the wish of those involved, to keep it "low-key" and "intimate", shared by only the 76,000 or so in attendance, but upon reading about it this morning I felt the need to comment. On a night the Broncos needed a win, a night that a season stood on the brink, we were once again slammed back to the harsh reality of real life and death. The Broncos honored Rosalind Williams and Judy Nash before the Broncos beat the Steelers, reminding all of us what truly is important. While the game was in doubt to the very end, there must have been a sense in the crowd that there was no way the Broncos would lose this game. "What a night," Williams said after the game. "They did it, they did it. I'm so proud of those guys. They scared me, but we got it done. I'm so happy." The Broncos have always been a first-class organization, finding just the right way to honor, without seeming mushy or over the top. They did it once again in honoring Williams and Nash, with each grieving mother joining the Broncos Captains at mid-field for the pre-game coin toss. "I had to fight back tears," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said of his pregame moment with the two women. Rosalind Williams also visited with Shanahan briefly in the locker room after the game. Said Lynch, a veteran safety: "I told the defense that we had to go play the way Darrent would expect us to." And that's what they did. The defense made some big plays while giving up others, just like Williams who wasn't afraid to take a risk, or deal with the ramifications. "Really, it was more emotional than I thought it was going to be," Williams said. "Judy was a great help to me, and I think I was to her. It was so special to see all of the guys." I have said on many occasions that I am proud of the Broncos and of being a fan of an organization that exudes so much class. Last night was just another example of the team doing what it can, no matter how big or small, to ease the pain. The Broncos assured they were winners, no matter what the final score would have been.

Review: Medal of Honor: Airborne
(September 16th, 2007 - 1:38AM)
(4 / 5 stars)
One sentence summary: A polished game with some nice touches, but I can't help but feel like it's just another WWII shooter.
Things I liked about Medal of Honor: Airborne:
Excellent single player campaigns.
If you've read the Metacritic reviews for this game, my review should seem familiar. That's because I agree with a lot of the points in the other reviews and have repeated them here.
Airborne consists of about a half dozen lengthy campaigns. Although the first few are unremarkable, the last three campaigns are unique and a lot of fun.
Parachuting into the level is a nice effect.
You begin each campaign by parachuting onto the map. This allows you to start the level wherever you want, rather than in a fixed place. Although this barely makes the game less linear, it adds a new dimension and is certainly a positive development.

| | Dubious Honor | | 2007-09-08 20:30:25 | | It came up in Wednesday night's debate on Fox. More than once, in fact.Honor.What "honor" really seems to boil down to for the GOP Jingoists is the belief that we can't leave until we've beaten the savages into a submissive posture and our forces can stride over prostrated bodies on their way off the dune. The plumed helmet adorers take the same view of honor as Sheikh Abdullah Azzam: "History does not write its lines except with blood. Glory does not build its lofty edifice except with skulls. Honor and respect cannot be established except on a foundation of cripples and corpses."Ron Paul delivered in rebuttal the most exceptional line of any debate thusfar: "What do we have to pay to save face?"And just like that, the curtain was thrown aside.Seeking honor in a flag pitching ceremony atop a mountain of corpses is both horrible and horribly immature. Costuming the whole affair in the freshly-pressed outfit of an illegitimate, westernized and U.S.-approved government only adds the additional charge of hypocrisy to the long list of offenses that millions of Muslims, starting with the Saudis, will not soon forget. If, as Mike Huckabee suggests in his hollow and condescending platitude, we broke "it" and bought "it", then let's do the honorable thing which would be to apologize, cut the damaged party a check, and take our leave of the store before we knock over another shelf of fragiles. It just might be a better strategy than smashing up the rest of the place and insisting the owners commit themselves to our own back-of-the-napkin business plan. Where's the folksy fireside wisdom and honor in that? | | By: Republican Renaissance | | |

A third man, Mohamad Hama, who had pleaded guilty to taking part in the killing, was sentenced to at least 17 years in prison.Mahmod's family accused her of shaming them by ending an abusive arranged marriage, becoming too Westernized and falling in love with a man who did not come from their village. | | Peavy deserves All-Star honor | | 2007-07-10 19:32:00 | | It’s truly an honor for Jake Peavy to be starting tonight’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game for the National League.Peavy is the type of guy you’d like to have for a teammate because he backs you 100 percent, even if it’s your error that costs him a game.In fact, the Padres ace is probably as good as it gets when it comes to the teammate category. The only concern about Peavy starting the All-Star Game is that he tends to get too pumped up for these types of situations. If he can temper himself, he should be fine – and maybe he’ll even earn the most valuable player as Padres pitcher LaMarr Hoyt did while starting the 1985 All-Star Game.Last year’s NL starter, Brad Penny of the Dodgers, was never the same after the All-Star contest. He had a horrible second half and probably kept the Dodgers from winning the NL West outright from the Padres.Peavy can only hope that he one-ups Penny when it comes to the second half of 2007.And by the way, don’t forget who first predicte | | By: San Diego Sporting

The smack down happened at the Beverly Hills Hotel when, according to Pratt, Joel Madden accused him of talking trash about Richie. Pratt explained that the incident stemmed from a misquote in Details Magazine where he referred to Nicole as a "skinny b*tch." Pratt went on to say how he would never call Richie anything like that and called her a nice girl. Joel Madden has quite a fiesty temper on him, it seems. He's still kind of cute, though. | | By: Superstar Hotness

From Home Of Heros, regarding the Medal of Honor:The Medal of Honor may well be our Nation's rarest "gem", and the men who wear it are certainly our most "endangered species". Even most military veterans have never actually SEEN a Medal of Honor, much less met one of the few men authorized to display it around his neck. Since it was established in 1862 at the beginning of the Civil War, it has only been awarded to 3,444 heroes...almost half of them Civil War soldiersSince the beginning of World War II, only 846 Medals of Honor have been awarded. Over half that number died in their moment of heroism. Only 328 soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen from Pearl Harbor to Somalia have survived to actually wear the Medal.
