The Loss of the Small Family Farms to Build New Houses, Stores, Roads, Power Lines, My Thoughts
    2008-06-16 10:17:20
I grew up on a dairy then beef cattle farm. When I was a young girl so many dairy farms around each mile, now there is not even a farmer within a mile. It is the same story for many others it is a sad moment in many lives with people in my farming community that is no longer a farming community. Why did small farms go out of business is because not making a profit and then larger cooperate farms took over. The bigger farmers have more cows than the smaller farmer then that makes them go out of

Deciding what type of house to place in your yard can impact which species of bird you attract to your backyard. There are plenty of books on the subject of birds, and bird houses. These books can help you understand what certain birds look for in the way of a resting place. Most hobby and craft stores provide kits and patterns to allow those inclined to working with their hands to build their own bird houses. Five killed as plane crashes into houses
    2008-03-30 17:13:43
Two pilots and three passengers in a Cessna Citation 1 jet have been killed after it crashed into a housing estate in Farnborough, Kent. The plane had left London Biggin Hill Airport just after 2pm but apparently got engine trouble almost immediately after take-off.All crashes are horrendous, but this one has left a memory on many eye witnesses. Because the plane was so low, one person could actually see the faces of the people in the plane. They lost their lives and it is only miraculous that there were no further victims on the ground. The house that took the direct hit was unoccupied at the time, as the owners were away.Executive air travel is usually extremely safe, but the numbers of plane trips are increasing. Biggin Hill use to be a small airport where people learnt to fly and is famous for the Biggin Hill Air Fair. Now it is vying to become the executive's first choice for air travel from London. Is it wise to have such an airport so close to the suburban outreaches of London?

    Spirit Houses in Sukhumvit
    2008-02-05 10:25:45
As mentioned in "Superstition and Spirituality in Sukhumvit" (click HERE to check out the pics), many Buddhist Thais still adhere to their animistic beliefs. One example of this devotion can be seen in the prevalence of "spirit houses". A spirit house is traditionally designed after Thai temples, built to shelter spirits who will guard the area/property. Not confined to just guard houses, a spirit house can be found practically anywhere - guarding a shop, a gym, a forest... even naughty places like massage parlors cannot afford not to have their own spirit houses~!! (The fact that these are naughty places means they actually NEED all the "extra" help they can get heh heh~!!)Called san phra phum in Thai, a spirit house's precise location is typically decided by a Brahmin priest, who will advise on the spirit house's erection day. Traditionally, the spirit house is also accompanied by a group of servants (who will serve the spirits). Its color usually reflects the birthday color of the o

Forum Post of the Day: Auction houses go faction neutral - SendMeRSS
    2008-01-16 11:05:25
Forum Post of the Day: Auction houses go faction neutralFiled under: Analysis / Opinion, Economy, Factions, Making money, ForumsMileiamh has posted an idea for an auction house revamp in the official WoW suggestions forums. Because neutral auction houses are located in neutral towns, and are therefore not frequently used, Mileiamh suggests that Blizzard could place faction neutral auction houses in "each of the pre-BC auction houses". He posits that these new additions would "solve bad econom(ie)s on low pop servers" and eliminate the "need for opposite faction auction house alts". Furthermore, Mileiamh reasons that these auction houses would "likely supersede the old auction house" and therefore, could "replace [them] completely". Seeing "no drawbacks", he seems excited at the prospect that the "items available to both factions" would be "greatly expand[ed]". Taking the neutral auction houses as proof that "[B]lizzard seem[s] to have no problem with horde and alliance selling things to each other", Mileiamh invites everyone for further discussion. What potential benefits and drawbacks could other players point out?Continue reading Forum Post of the Day: Auction houses go faction neutral Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Link - Comments - Amanda Miller - Wed, 16 Jan 2008 15:19:00 GMT - Feed (4 subs) forum-post-of-the-day forums wow-auction-house wow-economy wow-forums wow-gold Sent using SendMeRss.com. An Affair with a House continues to be a top seller for STC, with more than 45,000 copies in printShows readers how to realize their own taste and design preferencesYou learn from people with great taste,” says Bunny Williams. She should know. As a novice, Williams worked for legendary decorators Sister Parish and Albert Hadley, absorbing everything she could of their peerless design sense. Striking out on her own, she rose to the top rank of the interior design profession, where she has stylishly remained for the last 30 years. Now, it’s our turn to learn from her.Part memoir and part how-to manual, Bunny Williams’ Point of View showcases many of the drop-dead chic but always cozily comfortable residences whose interiors Williams has designed during her astounding career. Flipping Houses: Bargains, Distressed Houses, and Fixer-Uppers Explained
    2007-12-18 01:29:00
If you're interested in making money flipping houses, it still can be done in a slow real estate market. In fact, many investors are looking for other ways to make money so the competition isn't as fierce. Also, sellers become more anxious every day their home sits on the market.Flipping houses for money success doesn't depend on an active real estate market or in thirty percent appreciation. Your ability to make money in real estate depends on your ability to buy a bargain property and to sell it or rent it for profit. Bargain Houses Have Distressed SellersReal estate investors make money when they find a bargain property which they can purchase for less than market value and resell or rent for profit. The key may be a "distressed seller" who needs out right away because of overwhelming problems like financial difficulties (pending foreclosure, lack of money to pay bills), divorce, death, addictions, job loss, or transfer. Sometimes a seller wants to use the money to purchase another property or start a different business and is willing to offer a bargain price to move on. Distressed Houses Are Fixer-UppersA "distressed house" is one that needs help to bring it up to saleable condition--a fixer-upper. Owners of fixers are not always distressed sellers. They might not be in foreclosure or facing financial problems. They may just lack motivation or know-how to fix up the property and haven't sold it because most home buyers want a house in good condition. You can make money buying both bargains and fixers. It depends on whether you want to work with houses in good condition or fixer-uppers. Some investors only buy houses in prime condition from sellers who are willing to discount for a fast sale. In today's market, you must know how you're going to make a profit before you purchase a house. If you know the market is still active in your area and you have a strong chance of reselling in a couple months for full price with the right marketing strategy, you can mak

Selling Houses Might Be A Very Good Money Maker
    2007-12-11 05:26:02
After transferring to our present house nearly a year ago, I figured out we may want to transfer to another place because of difficult times that we had to encounter when we are living in the uptown city. One of this is the difficulty in accessing transportation since we had to walk a few blocks to ride a public utility vehicle and to address this problem, i had to spend good money and buy another car. See? This is not very ideal if you want to live in a dream house. Right?Well, i figured out that I might be able to sell this house for a bigger price than my construction cost. I had a few offers before from mostly foreigners to loved the design of our house and more likely, im going to consider his offer and I think this would be a better deal.I searched for cash for homes websites on the internet and i finally found myself on this website wherein they require you to submit your address and all other pertinent information. Im going to let you guys know more about this one when time permits.

Children don't live in houses with clean floors...
    2007-11-29 10:35:02
Does this kind of thing ever happen to anyone else?My only goal for today was to clean my floors.  If I just set aside the whole day, I thought, I can get the floors in every room cleaned.  My plan was to do one room at a time.  So first thing this morning I got started. Then I had to make everyone breakfast.  Then I had to feed the baby--several times.  Then I had to get him to sleep.  Twice.  Then I had to kiss 3 or 4 boo boos.  Then I had to discipline one little boy who has a sudden tendency for lying.  Then I had to correct math papers.  Then I had to make lunch.  Then I had to get everyone down for naps.  All this plus about a hundred other interruptions. Now it is 2:30 and have cleaned one HALF the floor of ONE ROOM.If you ever come to visit and my floor is covered in crumbs and unidentified sticky stuff, please know that I try.  But for now I have chosen children over clean floors, shiny sinks, and tidy rooms.

Another Tip For Those Who Are Buying New Houses
    2007-11-24 18:44:06
Just a year ago, the whole family had a hard time deciding on whether to renovate the current house or to transfer to a new location in the city uptown. We would look for homes for sale and in the same time, canvass for the cost of the whole process of renovation and after the rather difficult time of discerning, we made a choice to buy a new home in the city uptown. Now, i found this site about real estate homes for sale at a very affordable costs and with great value for your hard earned money. One thing that I really find useful with this site is its search function that really cuts the time searching for your dream home. I gave it a go and typed in the zip code of where i would want to find a nice foreclosure home that would give the family some quality time with nature and at the same time, be near the city. Well, i found what im looking for in just seconds. There is one problem though, you have to decide well. Goodluck deciding guys!

Fund houses show their hand - and it's thumbs-up
    2007-10-23 05:10:00
Teh Hooi Ling834 words18 October 2007Business Times SingaporeEnglish(c) 2007 Singapore Press Holdings LimitedBT survey reveals they are mildly bullish, still hot on China but worried about US slowdown(SINGAPORE) In a unique exercise to determine exactly what the smart money is thinking, BT has polled top fund houses and found that they are moderately bullish about the equities market over the next six months. The 10 fund houses who shared their views have combined assets of US$1.39 trillion under management. The average outlook of fund managers is +2, on a scale of -10 (being ultra bearish) to +10 (being super bullish). Their ratings are weighted by their fund size. The most bullish rating is +8 and the most bearish -3. Meanwhile, cash level stands at about 5 per cent.BT intends to conduct a similar poll every month and this will form the basis of a fund managers' sentiment index - a gauge of how they see things unfolding. The results of the poll will be published in Pulses, the Singapore Exchange monthly financial magazine from next year onwards. SGX has outsourced the production of the magazine to BT starting from January 2008.The latest snapshot, based on the first poll, shows that geographically, Hong Kong and China still feature among the top picks of fund managers despite the incredible run that the two markets have had in 2007. For the year to date, the CSI 300 - an index that tracks the daily price performance of the 300 most representative A-share stocks listed on the Shanghai or Shenzhen Stock Exchanges - has surged a jaw-dropping 185 per cent.China is the best performing market in the world for the year to date. Meanwhile, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index has risen 47 per cent during the same period.Singapore also appears as the top pick among a number of fund managers. Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea and Thailand showed up on the lists of more than one fund manager.Said Geoffrey Wong, UBS Global Asset Management's head of global emerging markets: 'Within Asia, we are currently finding a lot of value in Indonesia, Thailand and India.'Thailand and Indonesia are favoured for their cost competitiveness. In addition, companies within these markets generate relatively higher return on equity and earnings growth compared with their regional peers, he said.Schroders, meanwhile, maintains a moderate overweight in the US market for its defensive qualities. 'The Fed has plenty of policy scope to cut rates while earnings growth and valuation remains attractive,' it said.It also likes European equities for their strong earnings per share growth and valuation - 'the most compelling compared to its own history and other regions'. Schroders is also positive on Asia as the region continues to show signs of decoupling from the US economy, with China providing the key support.Sector-wise, fund managers see upside in property, industrial, construction, energy, and consumer sector and technology.Said UBS' Mr Wong: 'In Asia, we like the consumer sector due to strong structural drivers such as a big reserve of young and under-leveraged individuals with rising disposable incomes.' UBS is also positive on the industrial sector as it relates to the infrastructure theme. 'Spending on infrastructure,' said Mr Wong, 'is expected to triple over the next ten years.'Meanwhile Schroders prefers large over small cap stocks, and growth over value. As for Roger Groebli, head of equity research, Asia at ABN Amro PrivateBanking, his three sector picks are energy, commodities and technology. When it comes to concerns, the biggest worries for fund managers include a slowdown in the US economy, over-valuation of equities, sharp appreciation of Asian currencies and volatility in the US dollar. One risk, noted UBS, is that 'higher interest rates and oil prices may result in an outflow of funds from emerging market assets.'There are a couple of bears amidst the majority of bulls. One particularly bearish fund holds the view that there are a number of imbalances now in the market that will cause a significant market decline at some point in the next few years. 'The most tenuous characteristics is record high profit margins across the board, particularly in lower quality companies,' said the fund manager. As such it recommended risk reduction and capital preservation to its clients. 'We are not averse to advising our clients to invest a chunk of their portfolio in cash at the moment...In the case where clients have to or want to take on some equity risk, we recommend high quality and large cap equities, particularly in the US.'A total of ten fund houses responded to BT's poll. The aim of constructing the index is to let the market have a snapshot of the collective outlook of the smart money. No firms will be highlighted without consent. The index is only as good as the number of fund managers who respond to the survey - and hopefully more will start to share their sentiment.

    As safe as houses?
    2007-10-12 16:10:00
Tighter Bank of Thailand monetary policy in 2005 and softer domestic activity growth have dampened house prices of late, but interest-rate cuts this year ought to lead to some improvement, especially as Thailand does not have the after-effects of a bubble to weigh on the residential property market.Although housing markets have had common global drivers in recent years, this does not mean that the US housing slump will be repeated elsewhere. There are global problems enough to worry about, as US consumption slows and credit markets exhibit volatility. Adding a global housing slump to the list of world economic problems seems unnecessary.

"Green" Houses: Keeping the Environment in Mind
    2007-10-01 15:09:00
I sometimes get questions about houses and the way they relate to being environmentally "friendly". Nothing hit this home to me more than THIS ARTICLE that I read on the cover of the AJC yesterday. What factors are involved in making a house environmentally friendly? And what things can a homeowner do to help reduce energy and water consumption? These are some things to think about and some goals to work towards. Not only will these ideas save money, energy and water, but they will also be SELLING POINTS when you need to sell your house:Go solar. The sun is free and if you can use solar panels to capture it's energy, you can use it to run or suppliment the energy that you use in your house. Solar technology is better and the materials are cheaper than they were just a few years ago. To learn more about solar energy, you can visit THIS SITE.WATER. USE IT WISELY is an excellent resource for learning about reducing our consumption. It has 100+ ways to reduce, a family water audit to help you see where you may be consuming too much water, and ideas for saving water outdoors. Landscaping is an important "green" factor in a house. Can you grow your own food? Organic gardening is an excellent way to suppliment your diet and a fun hobby as well. Planting fruit trees, vines and other food-bearing plants will add value and beauty to your home. To learn more, visit the Organic Landscape Alliance. Add a composter to reduce the amount of waste that you add to your landfills. Your plants and trees will thank you for the nutrients you will be providing them with, as well. To learn more about composting, CLICK HERE.If you are building a new home or rennovating your old one, put some thought into using either recycled materials, sustainable wood floors (bamboo instead of oak, for example) and natural products (wool carpet instead of synthetic). VISIT THIS SITE and you will see things that you have never heard or thought of.Water filtration. Using good filters is important for your health and the value of your home. A whole-house water filter that will begin filtering your water as it enters your house will be a big feature. No chlorine, harsh chemicals or impuritites will get into your bath, drinking or laundry water. These filtration systems can be a huge selling point as well as help keep you and your family healthy. CLICK HERE to go to a buying guide.Air filtration is a huge factor for your health as well as your energy bills. Using a good filtration system can keep you from visiting the doctors during allergy seasons, it will keep you from having to clean/dust as often, it will keep your AC unit from having to work so hard to keep your house cool and it will be a HUGE factor in the sale of your house. People love high quality filtration systems and you should keep this in mind when deciding on which one to purchase. At the minimum, you should have a very good air filter in your AC system that you change or clean often. To learn more about air filters, CLICK HERE.Lighting is huge when it comes to energy consumption. If your house has not been designed with natural lighting in mind, it is imperative that you add energy-efficient lightbulbs. Not only will this reduce your monthly power bill, but you will replace them less often, your house will be cooler in the summer months, you will be reducing air and water pollution and your lighting will be better. Visit THIS SITE for more information.Recycle. Making it easy to recycle is an important factor in whether that plastic bottle goes to the landfill or gets reused. Move your recycling containers to a place where they are as easy to get to as your garbage can. If you keep them out of sight, they will be out of mind. Many stores such as Lowe's or Home Depot sell organizing bins to aid you in your efforts to store/organize recycle materials. Installing these will not only encourage you to recycle, it will also be an attractive feature to many potential buyers. To see the variety of options, CLICK HERE.If you are interested in buying a "green" house or knowing how to make your house more environmentally friendly, please call me today at 770.862.8002 and we'll get started right away!Michael BradfordSouthern Prime Realty

Houses for lease: geese that lay golden eggs

With a plot of land located at a good site, one can build a house and decorate it modernly for foreigners to lease to earn VND40-50 million (US$2,500-3,100) a month. Upcoming legislation about removal of the mortgage interest deduction for homeowners with houses of more than 3,000 square feet of interior space-STOP THIS BILL!
    2007-09-05 05:28:30
Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) is planning to introduce legislation that would eliminate mortgage interest deductions for homeowners whose home is larger than 3000 sq. ft.The reason behind this is that in order to discourage people from adding carbon emissions to the atmosphere, U.S. Government should penalize homeowners whose energy use is excessive due to the size of their residence.  Yeah right, that’s all our real estate market needs, if this mindless piece of legislation passes, its effect on an already deeply troubled real estate and mortgage industry would be devastating. Mr. Dingles’ timing could not be worst.Furthermore, his argument is fundamentally flawed and for any type of building, including residences the question should be energy efficiency and not the size of a residence. A 4000 sq.ft. home could use less energy than a 2500 sq.ft. home if the larger home uses energy-efficient light bulbs, high grade insulation, energy saving appliances and air conditioning and infrared

Foreigners can’t buy houses in Vietnam now
    2007-08-20 03:16:00
The pilot scheme allowing foreigners to buy houses in Vietnam will need more time before it is implemented because the Land and Housing Law doesn’t permit foreigners to own land and houses in Vietnam. Last July the Ministry of Construction submitted to the government a scheme on permitting foreigners to buy houses in Vietnam on a trial basis. If this scheme had been implemented, around 21,000 foreigners who are living in working in Vietnam would have been eligible to buy houses.

    The War of the Houses
    2007-07-22 03:11:00
It seems designed to boost uncertainty for potential buyers, inflate housing prices (not to mention commissions) and reduce overall transparency.A hot sellers' market is partly the cause. But there seems to be more quality control and consumer protection when buying a car or a litre of milk than when making the biggest purchase in most people's lives. The way bidding wars are conducted in Toronto is at the heart of the problem. There don't appear to be any rules. In one case we were asked to re-bid because several of the offers were "similar." Similar?

    Straw Houses
    2007-06-18 14:51:00
The Dow and the S&P are touching record highs. Not even the specter of rising interest rates can dampen this market. The last downturn in the market occurred in February and there was just a pause for it to catch its breath and run to record highs. Isn’t life wonderful?   Well, life isn’t so good if your mortgage lender is foreclosing on you and home foreclosures are rising. Take a look at Home Foreclosures Hit Fresh High which appeared in Friday’s Wall Street Journal. Deficiencies are on the rise and almost at levels last seen in the 2001 – 2002 recession. You’d expect foreclosures to be high during a recession, but not when the economy is growing. Even more ominous is the value of the collateral backing the mortgage. Home prices rose steadily from 2002 through 2005. Real estate was the place to be. Families moved into bigger homes (with bigger mortgages) and investors bought (speculated in) res
