Game 1 of the pre-season is behind us and while the end result was a loss there were some encouraging signs. There were also some things that concern me a bit. Yes, it was only the first pre-season game. Yes, in reality, they don't mean anything. That doesn't mean, however, that we can't look at the game and find some positives and negatives to carry forward. There are also some distrubing trends that continue to manifest themselves on this team that need to get worked out over the next 3 weeks.

The 49th Season of Denver Broncos football gets underway tonight as the Broncos head south to face good friend Gary Kubiak and the Houston Texans.
Since the game is only available locally to watch on television, I will not be able to see it until 10PM est, tomorrow, when the NFL Network re-broadcasts it in it's entirely. I will be relying on you guys and gals to keep us informed in this Open Thread.

At last the time for talk is over and the time to play is upon us. Regardless of what you personally think the Quest is all about it starts for you and the Broncos tonight with their first pre-season game against the Houston Texans.
Sure, the first game is usually a time to get your starters in and out without getting anyone hurt, and it is no different for the Broncos, but there are a lot of battle up and down the roster that games like these will help determine. There aren't many guaranteed roster spots out there once you get past the top 12-15 players. That means there are 65 guys battling for 38 spots. Good times to be sure.

Lou Piniella's crew has started the second half of the season the same way they began the year....with back-to-back losses to a division rival. The Cubs dropped the first two games of the year to the Brewers with a less than stellar performance from their offense and have duplicated the performance the last two days in Houston. The Cubs managed only 1 run for the second night in a row, but this time the solo home run came from their pitcher, Carlos Zambrano. Zambrano hit his second home run of the year into the stands just beyond the right field wall in the 7th inning that broke up the shutout.
Carlos Zambrano set a new franchise mark for home runs by a pitcher in the loss. Big Z's 14th career home run surpassed the previous mark of 13 held by Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins.

Lou Piniella's crew completed their 13-game stretch with two disappointing losses to the Astros after an impressive win on Monday. For the second night in a row the Cubs jumped out to an early lead just to see it disappear after one bad inning. Derrek Lee hit his 11th home run in the 1st inning following a walk by Kosuke Fukudome. Micah Hoffpauir reached on a 2-out double, his first career big league hit, and scored on a double by Geovany Soto. The Cubs had a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning.
Sean Gallagher followed Ryan Dempster's lead and pitched from behind early in the game. Gallagher pitched his way out of trouble in the bottom of the 1st with help from a tremendous catch in foul ground by Ryan Theriot. Gallagher kept the Astros' off the board the first time through the lineup, but Miguel Tejada and Carlos Lee gave the Astros the lead for good in the 3rd inning.

In honor of something of which I am still unclear, the folks of LOHO, Wrigleyville23, and Cubs F/X (a site that goes well beyond my capabilities) are all heading over to Another Cubs Blog to chat with Maddog and the gang for the game tonight.
As for this game, I can tell you that I saw Ryan Dempster pitch on Thursday, and whatever the hell he was doing (outside of pitching to the Padres), he should keep doing it. A lot.
No question the decision to put him in the starting rotation was a gamble, but, unlike every goddamned bet I ever make, this one seems to be paying off. Dempster's 5-1 with team-leading 2.35 ERA (you can look up his WHIP on your own), and his 48 strikeouts are second behind T.R. Lilly.
His secret weapon?
