Plug Your Blog and Fight Hunger
    2008-05-29 00:27:31
(Anyone that links to this post gets a link back.)The rising cost of gas has become a real burden on the working poor causing many to turn to food banks to make up the difference. The increased demand is causing food banks to go bankrupt. My local food bank here in San Antonio has asked my workplace to do a beans only food drive in order to be able to provide as much healthy food as possible. So it occurred to me that since dried beans are cheap, I have a blog, and bloggers love to see their Technorati ranking go up that I might be able to help out a few more families by trying to harness the power of blogtopia. So for the month of May I am hosting a blogger food drive. Here is the deal:1: You hit the paypal donation widget and contribute 1$2: I take that money and buy beans and then donate them.3: I link back to your blog or website in a weekly update post. (leave your site's name and address in the Paypal comments field or email me the details at dyre42atgmail.com)4: I create a blogro

Not everyone can walk their way out of hunger
    2008-05-28 09:33:57
For every mile you walk, you burn about 250 calories. How much do North Koreans take that into account as they attempt to walk into South Korea and China? Surely they are aware of the shoot-to-kill orders issued to North Korean border guards. On the Chinese side of the border, Chinese border guards invade the homes of ethnic Koreans living in China who may be harboring refugees from starvation.Biofuels, increased food demand in developing countries and the high cost of fuel are taking the blame for the current world crisis but there are many reasons more people are hungry right now.Global warming may very well bear the blame for the cyclone that destroyed 65% of Myanmar's rice fields. That same area is responsible for 50% of its poultry and pork production and 85% of its aquaculture.Global warming is definitely one of the factors responsible for the salmon shortage that is leaving the Stellat'en people in British Columbia with only one salmon for every twenty-five people, not eno

Castro on Obama, Hunger, and Consumerism
    2008-05-26 17:30:31
The rumble for Florida’s votes is on and the winner may depend on what Miami’s Cuban immigrants see as the future of their motherland. Clinton, Obama, and McCain are sparring over how they will deal with Fidel Castro, now 81, and younger brother Raul, who formally assumed the presidency in February 2008. Mirroring the majority [...]

Biofuel: filling your tank with hunger
    2008-04-23 17:06:44
The UN is calling for action to avoid the "silent tsunami of rising food prices which threatens to push more than 100 million people worldwide into hunger" (http://www.un.org/). Protests against rising costs of basic foods already started in Haiti, Mexico, the Philippines, Bangladesh, South Africa.... Sub-Saharan Africans continue their decades-old silent protest, dying slowly, quietly, dryly.I recall now the bad feeling I had last year when I read about Bush's visit to ethanol-driven Brazil. Biofuel production is said to be responsible for at least one third of the recent increase in food prices. It was already being called “deforestation fuel”. Now it’s also “hunger fuel”.But it’s bio. «Quand je dors chez mon copain, on mange tout le temps bio» (Sanseverino, «Cette conne m'ennuie»). Blogging in Luxembourg. In engrish.

The U.S., the U.N. and World Hunger
    2008-04-21 10:13:23
ACCRA, Ghana (AP) - The U.N. chief warned Sunday that the world must urgently increase food production to ease skyrocketing prices and pledged to set up a task force on a crisis threatening to destabilize developing nations. The cost of food has increased by around 40 percent since mid-2007 worldwide, and the strain has caused riots [...]

Yet another plan the U.S. won't sign- this one to reduce hunger
    2008-04-17 19:30:03
Fifty years of industrialized farming has not prevented 850 million people from going to bed hungry each night. The International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development has been working for the last five years to find a better approach to world food production, One would think that a plan developed by 400 scientists, 60 nations, private industry and consumer and activists groups would catch the attention of the U.S. Government, and so it did. The U.S., Canada and Australia rejected the report, among other reasons, because it cautions against expecting genetically modified crops to be a part of the solution, questioning production and safety issues. All three countries are big promoters of GM food, whereas the crops are are banned in Europe. Other recommendations include:Land management practices to limit the effect of global warmingLimiting the presence of pesticide resideues, heavy metals, hormones, additives antibiotics in the food systemSust

    Hunger (1974)
    2008-03-30 05:28:31
The film Hunger inspired a generation of computer animators in Canada. This short is created by Peter Foldes under the auspices of the National Film Board of Canada. Hunger includes striking computer-generated interpolations of key poses drawn by hand and painstakingly digitized into the computer software.NRC (National Research Council of Canada) scientists Nestor Burtnyk had programmed a complete key frame animation package that allowed the creation of animated sequences by providing only the k

There’s a stench in the sea just south of Imperial Beach, where the border fence slices the Pacific.  It used to come from Tijuana sewage but I found out that now, it’s from something far more horrific. Aqua Teen Hunger Force Season 5
    2008-01-28 15:05:00
Aqua Teen Hunger Force is one of my all-time favorite TV shows. The adventures of Frylock, Master Shake, and Meatwad are a seemingly never ending source of comic delight. The Aqua Teens are often joined by their furry neighbor Carl Brutananadilewski. Carl has had episodes revolving largely around him in previous seasons but season five has started off with two episodes featuring Carl as the only main character. It seems that the Aqua Teens have been sent to be cocooned by evil spiders by their (and Carl's) landlord Marcula because they complained too much about a gas leak in their house and now Carl has been trying to shop the empty house.I can't say I don't miss the Aqua Teens and I do think they are funnier and more interesting than Carl alone (but it is three characters opposed to one, not really a fair comparison) and would like to see them return in the future. I am, however, enjoying the fact that ATHF has an ongoing storyline for the first time ever basically and am not opp

News Round-Up: Oil, Biofuel, World Hunger and Crimes Against Humanity.
    2007-11-06 11:22:00
The world has 800 million people suffering from hunger. About 100-150 million of those receive regular food aid. Up to now, we could say "the world is producing enough food to feed everyone, so it is just a matter of re-dividing the food!". This might no longer be true. In less than 10 years, the price for a barrel of crude oil went from less than US$20 to almost US$100. Soaring fossil fuel prices, and the push for non-fossil fuel -either out of environmental concerns, or to create less dependency on foreign oil- had many governments stimulate farmers to switch from food crops to biofuel crops. As if they really had to stimulate farmers: the growing demand made biofuel a real profitable cash crop. So, more farmers growing biofuel, means less farmers growing food crops. More land in use for biofuel, less land for food crops. The dilemma shows even more drastically in developing countries. As an example, the government of Swaziland announced this week that it would be allocating thousands

Political starvation & selling of hunger
    2007-10-10 16:34:17
This is a world where marketing plays key role and it is very important to live knowing this reality, or one will be miserably under the grip of this marketing society. We should aware that these marketing people will try to sell caps even to someone who does not have a head. Marketing is no longer selling consumer commodities and services, rather selling of everything including individuals, and no exception for ideologies and politicians.Sometimes back, opposition leader Ranil Wickramasingha was spending most of his time meeting foreign leaders to get their support in ousting President Mahinda Rajapaksa in an international conspiracy. After failing to grab the power using foreign political forces, at last, Ranil has fallen back onto his own feet and these days he is walking from village to village and from market to market trying to sell hunger which is UNP’s new political commodity. It is shamed that, throughout the history, hunger and food has been one of the key commodity in fooling the voters. “Giving eight pounds of grains for free”, “Bringing rice even from the moon”, “Giving bread at Rs 3.50” were few of the famous promises in the past. But we all know that those were mere promises to fool the ignorant voters. These petty politicians who pretend as sympathetic for the people, never present a proper plan on ways to increase agricultural production, rather their short political history clearly shows their true attitude towards agriculture.Like any other eastern countries, Sri Lanka culture has been raised on agriculture. Asian giants including China, India and Japan has always shown their due concern for agriculture in the march towards prosperity.Only those political heads mold on western Anglican machinery thinks that agriculture is a hindrance to development or shameful profession.A country must be developed based on its social and cultural roots considering its historical core strengths. It is good to see that current government has shown great interest on these value propositions and come up with good action plan to develop the agricultural sector. If every family has a well managed home garden, we should not even think of the term ‘hunger’. Of course, the image of ‘lumpant’ consumer developed by marketing sector that depends on sausages, fast foods and carbonated drinks may never be satisfied in any time.It is well known fact that during world war II, people of Sri Lnaka willingly choose to depend on petty grains like 'Buddgerry'. It was a war faugt in the name of the king of Britain. Now we are wining the our own war against terrorism and why not sacrifice a bit in the name of our future generations! Throughout the history, Sinhalese have never been known to be greedy. How they eat:"Their Diet and ordinary fare is but very mean, as to our account. If they have but Rice and Salt in their house, they reckon they want for nothing. For with a few green Leaves and the juice of a Lemmon with Pepper and Salt, they will make a hearty meal. Beef here may not be eaten; it is abominable: Flesh and Fish is somewhat scarce. And that little of it they have, they had rather sell to get money to keep, then eat it themselves: neither is there any but outlandish men, that will buy any of them. It is they indeed do eat the fat and best of the Land. Nor is it counted any shame or disgrace, to be a niggard and sparing in diet; but rather a credit even to the greatest of them, that they can fare hard and suffer hunger, which they say, Soldiers ought to be able to endure." - An Historical Relation Of the Island CEYLON - Robert Knox.In the last election, people of this country decided that their head and spinal chord is more important than belly. We are now winning the war against terrorism which was branded as ‘miserable war’ by incompetent and feeble leaders. It is now the time for all Sri Lankans, including great farming community in Jafna, to come forward to win the fight against hunger and let the bankrupt politicians to keep on walking from market to market until their feet get wear and tear.

Basil Rajapaksa to wage war against poverty and hunger
    2007-09-18 19:19:54
There are quite a number of MP’s in the parliament who spend their time just seating like dummies. Mr Arjuana Ranathunga and Ven. Uduwe Dammaloka are well-known among this category, and we have herd of tiger proxies in the parliament who are mere dancing into the tune of tiger terrorists and not to mention the political clown like Mervin Silva who was made last in the preferential vote in Colombo district, still somehow creep into the parliament in shameless manner. Parliament is not to play devil nor for those who need to burn their extra calories. It is in this backdrop that senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa is to be sworn in as a national list MP today to fill the vacancy created by the demise of Irrigation Minister Anwer Ismail. It is believed that once Basil Rajapaksa is appointed an MP, he will be appointed as the Cabinet Minister of Nation Building. This is the time where the nation is badly in need for leadership and the nation has apprehended the meaning of leadership. There was a time when political clowns and witches were procession in front of the nation by NGO mafia and foreign forces as leaders using their media network.Still these media networks work crazily to cell their old agents as leaders, but the people of this country has march extra mile ahead of these vicious forces. The whole political system in this country were under the custody of these foreign forces through their local agents CBK and Ranil. UNP never manage to come out of this grip but it was Mahinda Rajapaksa from Ruhuna who managed to defeat this evil grip in SLFP.People were desperate to break free and finally they found a leadership. Now it is the time for gradually cleansing this mechanism and removing microbes from national politics. We need fresh leadership for this and luckily we are blessed with not just one leader, but a family of true born leaders. It was under Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s prudent politico-military leadership that the war against terrorism is winning and the whole Eastern province has already been cleared. It is Basil Rajapaksa who took leadership in reviving the Eastern province economically and socially by withholding the winning flag hand over by military leadership. If any one ask the question of which is the most successful task under this government, the unanimous answer is the ‘war against terrorists’ which is sphere headed by Gotabaya Rajapaksa. That is why all the pro LTTE evil forces are targeting Gotabaya physicall and politically. That is the sole reason that these anti nationalistic groups lead by Ranil Wickramasingha try to spread false fear of existence of ‘Sahodara Samagama’ (brother’s union), because they clearly identified the threat if Basil Rajapaksa come into the political arena, it is economy and infrastructure development that is going to be rise next. It is a bold decision by Mahinda Rajapaksa to elect Basil as a MP in order to get the maximum use of his leadership and talent and we are pretty confident that just as his brother Gotabaya, Basill will justify for the responsibility his Mahinda is vesting on his shoulders. When king Gamunu was busy fight against Elara’s invasion, it was prince Tissa who took up the challenge of boost up the prosperity in the south in order to wage the war successfully and roles of both the brothers were written in gold in the history.

    Rumi's definition of hunger
    2007-09-14 19:40:49
Two men see a loaf of bread. One hasn't eaten anything for ten days. The other has eaten five times a day, every day.He sees the shape of the loaf. The other man with his urgent need sees inside into the taste, and into the nourishment the bread could give.Be that hungry, to see within all beings the Friend.- RUMI, translated by Coleman Barks with A.J. ArberryFrom ‘Enlightened Mind’, Edited by Stephen MitchellAl-Wali : The Protecting Friend is one of the 99 beautiful names of God.

Hunger for knowledge or indigestion of teachings!
    2007-08-03 20:02:00
FULL UP(from Idries Shah's book, 'Wisdom of the Idiots')A man came to Bahaudin Naqshband, and said:'I have travelled from one teacher to another, and I have studied many Paths, all of which have given me great benefits and many advantages of all kinds.'I wish to be enrolled as one of your disciples, so that I may drink from the well of knowledge, and thus make myself more and more advanced in Tariqa, the Mystic Way.Bahaudin, instead of answering the question directly, called for dinner to be served. When the dish of rice and meat stew was brought, he pressed plateful after plateful upon his guest. The he gave him fruits and pastries, and then he called for more pilau (rice), and more and more courses of food, vegetables, salads, confitures. At first the man was flattered, and as Bahaudin showed pleasure at every mouthful he swallowed, he ate as much as he could. When his eating slowed down, the Sufi Sheikh seemed very annoyed, and to avoid his displeasure, the unfortunate man ate virtually another meal. When he could not swallow even another grain of rice, and rolled in great discomfort upon a cushion, Bahaudin addressed him in this manner:'When you came to see me, you were as full of undigested teachings as you now are with meat, rice and fruit. You felt discomfort, and, because you are unaccustomed to spiritual discomfort of the real kind, you interpreted as a hunger for more knowledge. Indigestion was your real condition.'I can teach you if you will now follow my instructions and stay here with me digesting by means of activities which will not seem you to be initiatory, but which will be equal to the eating of something which will enable your meal to be digested and transformed into nutrition, not weight.'The man agreed. He told his story many decades later, when he became famous as the great teacher Sufi Khalili Ashrafzada.

    Homeland hunger strike
    2007-07-27 23:39:37
Boing Boing have posted a fantastic article:   This link points to “Weeping Sikkim,” a blog that chronicles an ongoing hunger strike by the youth of Sikkim, India to demand goverment transparency and accountability regarding hydroelectric projects in Dzongu, the homeland of the Lepcha people. The good news is that hunger strikes by the Buddhist community in Sikkim have sucessfully stopped hydroprojects in the past. However, the projects planned for Dzongu are much much larger. The government of Sikkim is not evil, and has made remarkably progressive environmental moves in the past (e.g Sikkim was one of the first states in India to ban plastic bags). Sikkim works hard to position itself as an ecotourism/buddhist pilgrimage destination for western tourists, so getting the word out about this hunger strike may help tip the balance. The people behind the Sikkim protest blog are also uploading YouTube videos like this one (Video Link), which shows ACT (Affected

Organic Can Help Fight World Hunger
    2007-05-11 19:25:00
You'll be wondering why most farmers still rely on conventional methods to grow the pesticide-laden foods that fill grocery stores throughout the world after reading this fascinating study that argues a large shift to organic agriculture can help the world not only protect and improve the environment, but help world hunger too. That's the short version of the results reported in a Danish study which estimated few ill effects on food security for sub-Saharan Africa if just half of the regions exporting foods in Europe and North America made the switch to organic farming. The report also cites recent models of an organically grown, global food supply that show the more environmentally friendly approach to agriculture is capable of producing enough food for the world's current population. What prevents many farmers from making the move to organic: Crop yields could drop as high as 50 percent in the beginning before evening out over time. That problem may be mitigated somewhat because far
