Hybrid Tea Rose – 'Perfect Moment'
    2008-12-08 07:49:37
Hybrid Tea Rose – Perfect MomentSynonyms: Jack Dayson, KORwilmaThis is another of the roses from Sonoma County. This one was a beauty with nice blending of colors and a stout plant. It was great to be able and walk down the street and take flower pictures from the sidewalk. People were even waving and seemed happy that their flowers were being ogled.‘Perfect Moment’ is another in a long line of Kordes roses that I like. There are several other of the families roses featured on this site. This was one of those times that I forgot to smell the rose while taking its picture. It does have a mild fruity fragrance according to my research. Here are some more facts about ‘Perfect Moment’:Bred by: Wilhelm Kordes III, 1989, GermanyUS Introduction by: Jackson & PerkinsPetal Count: 30 to 40Parentage: New Day × MercedesHeight: 4 to 5 feetHardiness: USDA Zone 7Awards: All-America Rose Selection, 1991This next rose has been shown on Digital Flower Pictures.com before. Choose The Hybrid Tea Rose For A Touch Of Classic Elegance
    2008-11-14 07:14:00
The Hybrid Tea Rose is a modern rose, the offspring of 2 old timers getting together: the Hybrid Perpetual and the Tea Rose. These magnificent modern flowers grow on long stems and bloom throughout the year. Although this rose gives off only a faint scent, it makes up for this shortcoming with its many petals and tall stature. The Hybrid Tea Rose has been referred to as "your basic rose on a stick." These are the most popular roses to give or receive on special occasions.A Thorny IssueYou can find these roses in every color of the rainbow, except blue. When shopping, look for roses with tags that read "smooth" on the label. Well, good news -- there are several thornless varieties! Many gardeners avoid the Hybrid Tea Rose because they're turned off by the idea of thorns. You Look MarrrrvelousPlant in the sprin...

    Aperitif Hybrid Tea Rose
    2008-09-21 09:14:00
The latter part of last summer was hot and droughty in Westminster. I went to look at a garden, locally, on top of a windy hill that is quite exposed to the worst of winter's harshness. Included was a small rose garden. Due to the weather and some neglect, all of the roses looked poor, except one. This was a yellow hybrid tea, fully foliated and loaded with buds about to unfurl, still bearing the remnants of what was obviously a heavy spring and early summer bloom. It had about eight husky canes and stood every bit of 5 feet tall. As a class, yellow hybrid teas tend to be the most difficult of all. In general they don't have a strong constitution. They seem particularly prone to winter kill. For years I have been searching for a good yellow hybrid tea and to stumble across one so serendipitously is truly a...

    Hybrid Tea Rose – Moondance
    2008-08-24 07:36:18
Hybrid Tea Rose – MoondanceThis is the third time ‘Moondance’ has been featured on this blog. There must be something to it. Actually most all of the rose bushes at the Rose Garden were blooming. There were a couple of hundred flowers out. That surprised me a little since this is usually a time that the roses slow down a little and then start perking up in the fall. This Rose Garden is not one that is doted over, I am lucky if I spend a couple of hours a week or every ten days deadheading and pruning. If I spent more time than that there would be a lot more roses. For white roses in the garden, which symbolize innocence and purity, there is ‘Moondance’, ‘John F. Kennedy’ and ‘White Lighting’. Of the three whites ‘Moondance’ has been by far the best performer.‘Moondance’Class: Hybrid TeaOrigin: Dr. Keith W. 2008-05-27 05:16:20
‘Eternal Flame’ Hybrid Tea RoseThere seems to three roses with the name ‘Eternal Flame’. This one is also known as Meifacul. This is the only Hybrid Tea with the ‘Eternal Flame’ name. It has a nice fragrance and the color is a very nice yellow.Bred in France in 2007 this is another of the roses from Alain Meilland. It is nice to able to be posting some roses. The big rose garden is coming along nicely even though it is on a very cold and windy site. I can’t wait to begin taking some more rose photographs. My day off was really nice we had about 15 people over and I think everyone had a good time. I have 5 houses planned for the rest of week....

Hybrid Tea Rose 'Peace' and Middle Name Meme
    2007-08-26 15:20:00
Hybrid Tea Rose 'Peace'Synonyms: Béke, Fredsrosen, Gioia, Gloria Dei, Madame Antoine Meilland, 3-35-40Introduced in the U.S.: 1945 by Conard-Pyle (Star Roses)Size and Petal Count: 6 inch flowers with 43 petalsFragrant? : Yes, strongI took this picture to please myself. I wanted to take a group portrait of ‘Peace’ for awhile and the opportunity presented itself at the NYBG. I used my Sigma 17-70mm lens and after I had gone through the garden with my macro lens I decided to slap the wide angle on and try a few shots. I am glad I did. With photography I am always trying to challenge myself into doing something a little different (like a group rose shot). However I often find myself retreating into what has worked for me in the past (close ups). The Peace rose has aninteresting historyand to me it was one of the most important rose of the 20th century.I got tagged to do a meme about “for each letter of your middle name, list a fact or statement relevant to yourself or your life. Hybrid Tea Rose ‘Marilyn Monroe’
    2007-08-25 13:05:00
Hybrid Tea Rose ‘Marilyn Monroe’Synonyms: WEKsunspatI must say this rose is a beautiful apricot blend with just a hint of green. It was blooming profusely at the NYBG. It had what I consider a light fruity type of fragrance, its real beauty was in the delicate shading of the inner petals.Parentage: Sunset Celebration × St. Patrick Petal Count: 30 to 35Breeder: Tom Carruth. Here is an interesting article on Mr. Carruth’s career as a rose breeder:SFGate.com/King of the RosesFrom the article by Rayford Reddell, a list of Mr. Carruth’s AARS Award winning roses:/start quote/ 'Scentimental' No two blooms are exactly alike, with petals randomly splashed with burgundy, red, cream, and white. Hybrid Tea Rose ‘Spellbound’
    2007-08-10 12:42:00
Hybrid Tea Rose ‘Spellbound’Synonym: JACpribeI can’t give any personal experience on growing this rose. I must say that the color and form was captivating. I forgot to smell it although I was rushing around when I snapped this photo. It is from a rose garden that I am officially going to be caring for now. It has 160 plants in it, with many types and colors. There are only about 20 or 30 repeat varieties so it really covers a broad spectrum. I am looking forward to the challenge of keeping it up.'Spellbound' had the most ‘clean’ flowers in the garden, although one of my new favorites ‘Strike it Rich’ was a close second. This rose was bred by Dr. Keith Zary and introduced in 2006 by Jackson & Perkins and was named their 2006 ‘Rose of the Year’. Dr. Zary started work at J & P in 1985 as only the fourth breeder in the company’s long history.SpellboundType: Large Flowered Hybrid TeaParentage: Ingrid Bergman × Pristine (hybrid tea, Warriner 1978)Petal Count: 30Fr...

    'Oregold' Hybrid Tea Rose
    2007-07-19 11:57:00
'Oregold' Hybrid Tea RoseSynonyms: TANolg, Miss Harp, Silhouette, Anneliesse RothenbergerThis rose blooms best during the cool weather though it was chugging along last week with a couple of flowers last week. It is good performer though seems a bit tender as I have had to replace it twice after the winter. I don't do a lot for winter protection for my roses and usually have a couple of losses after the winter. I think this because most of these roses are rated for USDA Zone 7 and my gardens are on the edge of 6 and 7. 'Oregold' has a mild fragrance and a petal count of 25-30. Its parentage is 'Piccadilly' × 'Colour Wonder' and has a good pedigree with 'Peace', 'Tropicana' and 'Crimson Glory' roses in its lineage. Bred in Germany it won the AARS Award in 1975.I think I have said before that I have really warmed up to yellow flowers over the course of my career. Some of them are amongst my favorites now. Who would have thought that. Yesterday’s Wordless Wednesday featu...

    Hybrid Tea Rose (‘Fragrant Cloud’)
    2007-06-18 11:45:00
Hybrid Tea Rose ‘Fragrant Cloud’Rosaceae (ro-ZAY-see-ay)Here are a couple of orange roses from the garden. I haven’t seen ‘Cary Grant’ or ‘Playboy’ this year but these two were blooming. ‘Fragrant Cloud’ is a hybrid tea rose with outstanding color and a strong fragrance. Mathias Tantau bred this rose in Germany in 1963. I didn’t think it was that old. The large blossoms are a real treat and can perfume a whole room when cut for the house. This rose has gotten black spot and mildew in my garden.Parentage: Seedling × Prima BallerinaPetal Count: 30Synonyms: Duftwolke, Fragrant Cloud '84, Nuage Parfumé, TANellisThere is only one climbing rose on the entire estate, ‘Joseph’s Coat’. It has fantastic color on the flowers but it does have a lot of disease problems. It is also one of the thorniest roses I know of. It is not as vigorous as some climbers I have seen and seems to need a little more pruning than most. It is slightly fragrant and has a petal count of aro...

    Hybrid Tea Rose 'Double Delight'
    2007-05-30 11:42:00
Hybrid Tea RoseRosa 'Double Delight'(RO-zuh)I went to get a few roses yesterday. The nursery had them but after waiting 25 minutes for a salesman (and having two people in front of me still waiting) I abandoned the idea. They had a nice selection of varieties. I took a couple of pictures while I was waiting. This one of ‘Double Delight’ came out the best, even though the flower is going by. It is a classic Hybrid Tea Rose with a strong fragrance and great colors. It hasn’t been disease resistant for me in the past. Roses are the only plant that I break my no-preventive pesticide applications on. It is virtually impossible to grow roses in Connecticut without a spray program. I take care of 3 small rose gardens (24, 20, 12 plants, respectively) and I have been using the Bayer All-in-One instead of spraying. In one garden not only am I battling black spot and aphids but deer too. They love to strip the buds right before they bloom. I remember one time the owner of the garden had...

    Hybrid Tea Rose ‘Mr. Lincoln’
    2007-04-25 12:10:00
Hybrid Tea Rose ‘Mr. Lincoln’Rosa (RO-zuh)Rosaceae (ro-ZAY-see-ay)This is my first spring writing this blog and I can see it going to be overwhelming to describe everything that is going on the garden right now. I want to thank everyone who leaves a comment. I sometimes don’t get notified by email that there are comments but I do appreciate your input. What a difference a weekend makes. Everything exploded in flowers and growth here in Connecticut over the weekend. Just a short list of what is blooming at the Estate now:Around 6,000 of the 10,000 daffodils. All types and heights. There aren’t any big plantings, mostly in small groups of single cultivars. I once had the idea of photographing every type of Daffodil in this garden and after trying one year I said forget it. 4 or 5 types of Magnolia including the dark purple ‘Rikki’.One of my favorite groundcovers, Creeping Veronica (Veronica umbrosa 'Georgia Blue'). Not invasive like some Veronicas, beautiful.Okame Cherry.Th...
