Mazda test drives hydrogen hybrid vehicle
    2008-06-25 16:32:00
apanese car maker Mazda had begun testing a hydrogen/petrol hybrid vehicle on public roads. The Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid minivan has a range of 200km on hydrogen fuel, which increases to 550km when running on petrol. The 4.5 metre-long vehicle can hold five passengers. "We will continue to advance our development programme and strive to start commercial leasing during this fiscal year," said Akihiro Kashiwagi, Mazda's programme manager in charge of hydrogen RE development. The vehicle is powered by a hydrogen rotary engine, which can run on hydrogen and petrol, and an electric motor. The driver can switch between the two fuel sources by pushing a button. Hydrogen is stored in a high-pressure tank, while a generator is used to charge lithium-ion batteries which power the electric motor. From information released by Mazda, it is not clear whether the rotary engine can drive the Premacy's wheels directly.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells - Cars Of The Future
    2008-05-16 09:47:00
Hydrogen Fuel Cells - Cars Of The FutureBy Fei LimImagine a world where you don't have to pay $3 to drive twenty or thirty miles, where trucks belching diesel smoke are unheard of, where you can walk down the road without inhaling the fumes of a thousand vehicles, where thousands of cars pass you and you hear nothing but a gentle hum and whoosh, and you have an idea of where hydrogen fuel cells will be taking us.Fuel cells were invented in 1839 by Sir William Grove, who figured out that you could separate hydrogen and oxygen from water through hydrolysis, and suggested that the procedure could be reversed to create clean energy, with a by-product of water. Back then, it was called the gas voltaic battery; only in 1889 did it get the name fuel cell. How Hydrogen Fuel Cells WorkLike batteries, fuel cells use chemical processes without combustion to create energy with a clean by-product. Because they do not work with the process of combustion, fuel cells never have partly used components,

Solar Power could run Hydrogen Economy when Oil Lobby Dies

Absolutely Free and Truly Endless Solar Power certainly has a bright future. Nanotechnology is a science field, which is going to profoundly effect the production of Hydrogen and the very beginning of Hydrogen Economy. Hydrogen is energy medium of our future and is going to replace expensive and environmentally dirty oil, coal, deadly dangerous highly radioactive material.Walter Varhue is professor of electrical engineering at the University of Vermont.Try to think how much solar power do we throw away every day, which is delivered to our planet by our sun?We simply do not even think about that immense solar energy, because we are taking it for granted. We rather buy ridiculously expensive oil, than to use vast resources of our empty roofs or other suitable surfaces for solar panels and mirrors to harness solar power.

BMW Hydrogen 7 Fit for a prince
    2008-04-13 14:56:09
Getting eco friendly is something that's best left in advertisements and hoardings since most of the remedies to pollution are either too preposterous or simply make too much of an unnecessary purchase. But no matter how underrated they concept of pollution-free options may be, I'll all ways vouch for vehicles that save both energy and also prevent pollution. Leading by example is His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco who has purchased a BMW Hydrogen. He is now inline with celebrities like Will Ferrell and Cameron Diaz. The prince picked this one up from an environmental exposition in Monte Carlo. "I monitor very carefully, in the automobile sector in particular, the development of new technologies". Well those are the golden words that weigh a lit more than the Hydrogen 7.

Air Products demonstrates mobile hydrogen fueling station in South Carolina
    2008-03-25 15:13:39
A 2005 press image from Air Products."Mobile hydrogen fueling technology." Sound like something you want? Air Products thinks so, and kicked off the company's latest demonstration of its mobile refueling system, this time in Aiken County, South Carolina. Air Products' announcement explains that there is one mobile fueler supplying 5,000 psi (350 bar) hydrogen for one hydrogen ICE truck. Everyone who is opposed to the wastefulness of hydrogen vehicles probably won't be too keen on that. Aiken County officials, like Fred Humes, director of the Aiken County Economic Development Partnership, are gushing about the technology, though. Humes said in a statement that, "By working with Air Products, we have access to the latest in vehicle fueling equipment and a reliable supply of hydrogen. The project team will provide tangible and visible proof that the use of hydrogen as a replacement for gasoline is feasible, safe and reliable." BMW sets nine records for hydrogen-drive cars
    2008-03-05 08:42:05
BMW has proven what the hydrogen car is able to offer. Its H2R vehicle has set 9 records for hydrogen-drive cars with combustion engine. "Nine records marking the start into the hydrogen age. BMW technology has already come a long way. Now, together with politicians and the energy industry, we must turn our vision of sustained mobility into reality", stated Professor Burkhard Göschel, Board Member of the BMW Group, during the speed record trials in Miramas.Achieving this amazing success at the high-speed Miramas Proving Grounds in France, the BMW Group has clearly proven its conviction that hydrogen is able to replace conventional fuel without requiring the driver to make the slightest compromise in terms of dynamic, up-to-date performance.Indeed, the specifications of the H2R Record Car clearly confirm this superiority, the six-litre 12-cylinder power unit developing an output of more than 210 kW or 285 PS. This accelerates the BMW prototype to 100 km/h in approximately six seconds

    Driving the BMW Hydrogen 7
    2008-02-29 20:20:00
Today I got a chance to have a spin in the BMW Hydrogen 7. It’s one of only 20 of the hydrogen-powered cars in the world, so I was a little nervous that I might prang it, but luckily all went seamlessly. In fact, apart from a big “H2” in the middle of the dashboard (and a small button on the right of the steering wheel, which you can just about see in this picture)BMW1.jpg you wouldn’t know you were driving anything other than a regular BMW. As my co-pilot and BMW engineer Mario explained, the car runs on a dual-fuel system, which means it can process both regular gasoline and hydrogen (the button on the steering wheel allows a driver to choose; or the engine switches automatically when one tank is empty.) The lengthy engineering process involved adapting the regular 760Li’s 12-cylinder engine to work with both fuel sources – and to make room in the car for the bulky hydrogen tank, which holds 17.5 lbs of liquid hydrogen. As you can see in this other photo, BMW2.jpgthe tank

    BMW betting on hydrogen
    2008-02-29 10:54:00
The theory goes: Betting on just one -- electric cars or fuel cells -- would be too risky. That's not the party line over at BMW. The German car manufacturer told TED attendees in Monterey Thursday that they are betting the whole hog on hydrogen. "Water is the coal of the future," a big sign in the middle of the room read. It was a reference to the process of extracting the H from H2O, and then using it to power the same internal combustion engines we use today. Turns out BMW started its hydrogen program back in 1978, and as such, they have a ton of research on the topic. Lots of interesting factoids. For example, BMW believes: --The world will hit peak oil in 2025, marking the day the world reaches its peak petroleum production, declining thereafter until we run out. --Technology will allow us to mass-produce hydrogen, without burning fossil fuels to do so, in the next 10 to 15 years.

Balloons Full of Hydrogen and Possibility
    2008-02-21 07:25:02
When I first read the article on the Wall Street Journal yesterday afternoon I immediately thought to myself "Wow, this would totally make sense." It's a logical move that couldn't come at a better time for the cellular industry. Google is on the verge of revolutionizing the cellular industry twice in the same year. First with Android and now with a potential contract with Space Data Corp. This is one of those cases where it should have been thought of a long time ago. By putting up roughly 330 balloons a day, they could blanket the country with radio signal and provide users with coast to coast coverage. By beaming down from 20 miles up, the signal would be free from interruptions typically caused by mountains, trees, water, etc. Imagine being able to use a cell phone out on the ocean! If this deal goes through, you'll not have to worry about the limitations caused by zoning restrictions. Depending on how the 700MHz auction falls out, there could be even more potential. Think

    BMW Hydrogen 7 : A Green Car
    2007-12-29 19:43:08
The Hydrogen 7 is powered by a V12 engine which produces no harmful exhaust emissions or CO2 when running in hydrogen fuel mode.It produces 191kW of power and 390Nm of torque and accelerates from 0-100km/h in 9.5sec. Top speed is limited electronically to 230km/h. A specially designed crash-proof tank houses the 8kg of liquid hydrogen that powers the car.It has a cruising range of 200km on hydrogen and 500km on petrol. A one-touch steering wheel-mounted button allows the driver to switch between petrol and hydrogen fuel on the move. Only 100 Hydrogen 7 cars have been built to be circulated around the world and showcase the technology.BMW Press:Munich, Germany — BMW has just come clean (pardon the pun) with the new Hydrogen 7. It may look and feel like BMW's large luxury car, known collectively as the 7 Series, but it doesn't sound or smell like one. This hydrogen-powered 7 Series BMW is virtually emission-free, according to the German automaker, and sets the company off in a bold new direction, as it begins the long journey of refining and advancing its hydrogen fuel ambitions. As the German marque explains, the BMW Hydrogen 7 is powered by a hydrogen combustion engine that has gone through the complete process of series development, using hydrogen as a source of energy, suitable for everyday motoring as of now.The deployment of its first fleet of hydrogen-powered 7 Series vehicles indicates that BMW has managed to elevate hydrogen performance to a commercially acceptable level, and has given its hydrogen cars to high profile members of society to test, including politicians and celebrities. While Lexus has been the only prestige car company to offer next generation propulsion systems in the form of hybrid (petrol/electric) vehicles, BMW has decided against following suit, instead opting to develop a petrol/hydrogen powered combustion engine and storage unit.Petrol/Hydrogen EngineBMW says the Hydrogen 7 is a revolutionary development: the engine, suspension and bod

    BMW Hydrogen/Petrol Combustion Engine
    2007-12-29 19:40:11
The dual-mode combustion engine powering the first series production luxury hydrogen saloon is the decisive, revolutionary new development in BMW Hydrogen 7: this new engine is based on the 12-cylinder gasoline power unit displacing 6.0-litres and featuring VALVETRONIC technology in the BMW 7 Series. Maximum torque is 390Nm and comes at an engine speed of 4300rpm.The V12 power unit in the BMW Hydrogen 7 operates in two modes, meaning that the engine is able to burn either hydrogen or gasoline in the same cylinders. Offering an overall cruising range of approximately 700 kilometres or 435 miles, BMW's hydrogen car with its dual-mode combustion engine has an even longer range than the BMW 760i.Running on gasoline, the engine operates with direct fuel injection, while in the hydrogen mode the fuel/air mixture is formed in the intake manifolds. The new injection valves developed for this purpose make the greatest conceivable demands in engine development in terms of their construction and integration. Conceived and designed for gaseous hydrogen, the valves are not only larger than conventional gasoline injection valves, but also cover a far wider variation in size and range in terms of their volume flow, operating at different levels of system pressure and at the same time with both very short and longer gas injection times required for hydrogen gas. Even so, they reliably inject exactly the right amount of hydrogen into the intake air at all times within hundredths of a second.Since hydrogen burns up to ten times faster than conventional fuel, management of the dual-mode combustion engine requires specific functions and operations. Using fully variable VALVETRONIC valve management as well as the variable double-VANOS camshaft adjustment, the engineers responsible for developing BMW Hydrogen 7 had ideal tools from the start for optimising the hydrogen combustion process, gearing the gas cycle and mixture formation process specifically to the individual properties and

    Clean Sustainable Energy from Hydrogen
    2007-12-13 04:10:00
What makes hydrogen an energy tool? The most common element in the universe, hydrogen has the highest energy content per unit weight of any known fuel. It never occurs by itself in nature - it always combines with other elements such as oxygen (for water) and carbon (for fossil fuels). Once separated, hydrogen is the ultimate clean energy carrier. NASA’s space shuttles use hydrogen-powered fuel cells to operate electrical systems and the key emission, water, is consumed by the crew. How is hydrogen produced? It can be extracted from any substance with hydrogen: water, fossil fuels and even some organic matter. Almost all of the hydrogen used worldwide today comes from natural gas though a process called reforming. Natural gas is made to react with steam, producing hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The hydrogen is then used to make ammonia for fertilizer, in refineries to make reformulated petrol, and in the chemical, food and metals industries. Hydrogen can also be made from coal in a similar process. Either way, the process releases carbon dioxide, a gas tied to global warming.Carbon-free methods involve splitting water into its component parts of hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis but the electric current itself has to be produced. The holy grail of hydrogen is to use a renewable source like solar, wind, hydro, geothermal or biomass power to create the current, making the process pollution free and sustainable. Future possibilities include using the power of ocean waves to generate electricity and microorganisms that could be adapted to produce hydrogen, as well as recovering hydrogen from fermentation or gasification of biomass.Source: National Renewable Energy Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy Visit http://blogmacammacam.blogspot.com for more interesting and funny things. :)

2008 Honda FCX Hydrogen in Los Angeles AutoShow
    2007-11-13 08:09:00
2008 Honda FCX, Honda's next generation of the FCX hydrogen fuel-cell car, has confirmed the debut at 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, after the excitement on 2007 Tokyo auto show.Unlike the current Honda FCX, which is a conventional Japanese model with hydrogen and electric components stuffed into it, the new model was designed as a fuel-cell/electric car from the beginning. Its platform is unique and takes advantage of the flexibility of the new electrical components. The secret to this model is a vertical fuel-cell stack that resides in a center tunnel. It's not unlike a tower PC, which revolutionized home computing by going vertical and getting off the desktop. The FCX's fuel cell — which was formerly horizontal, limiting headroom — is now also out of the way.Why the Japanese auto maker choseLos Angeles for the unveiling rather than its own back yard may have to do with the fact that a considerable number of the production FCXs will be leased to customers in the United States begin

Ford Fusion Hydrogen 999 for the race
    2007-10-06 04:09:17
Have you ever heard of a production-based hydrogen fuel cell race car? As with the Buckeye Bullet 2, the Fusion Hydrogen 999, was designed by Ford engineers too. While the engineers lift the 2004 Buckeye Bullets electric motor, the Ballard Power Systems supplied the 400 kW hydrogen fuel cells. The streamliner was designed by Ohio State students, supported by Ballard for the supply of hydrogen fuel cells, Roush for the engineering services, and Ford for the overall-project coordination as they pr

Hydrogen powered Toyota completes 350 mile trip
    2007-09-28 22:37:21
Hydrogen powered Toyota completes 350 mile trip Toyota has announced that its hydrogen fuel-cell powered FCHV has successfully completed a 350 mile trip — from Osaka to Tokyo — without stopping for fuel. The trip — which started at the Osaka Prefectural Government Office and concluded at the Mega Web automobile-themed amusement facility in Tokyo — was also complete with the air conditioning running the entire time. According to Toyota, the FCHV is 25% more fuel-efficient than the previous model, thanks to improvements in many of the vehicle's systems. The newest FCHV can also can carry almost twice as much hydrogen as older versions. Toyota's 350 mile journey without a fill-up bests GM's record of 300 miles on a single tank, set in a hydrogen fuel-cell powered Sequel earlier this year. With GM planning to beat Toyota to the market with lithium-ion powered plug-in hybrids, it appears as though Toyota won't give up its green crown witho

2007 Frankfurt Auto Show: Hyundai,Hydrogen-Powered Crossover
    2007-09-06 07:06:00
Hyundai will be making three unveilings at next week's 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, two of them are new and the other is something we've seen before. The highlight ofHyundai's stands will undoubtedly be the new hydrogen-powered i-Blue crossover concept. In line with the show's theme of sustainability and climate protection, the i-Blue is a visual representation of the carmaker's efforts to have a fully fledged hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle on the market within the next ten years.Developed in Chiba, Japan, the new concept emits no emissions whatsoever and was designed from the ground up as dedicated fuel-cell vehicle.Joining the i-Blue will be the Veloster sports coupe concept, already displayed at the Seoul Auto Show back in April. Though strictly a concept, there's talk that the Veloster could make it to production but if not we're sure some of its styling elements will feature on the upcoming RWD sports coupe currently in the works.Rounding out Hyundai's Frankfurt Auto Show trio is the new

Hydrogen and Aluminum as a Fuel
    2007-05-19 22:49:00
Although this blog hasn't published a report on hydrogen power yet, it looks promising. Now a National Medal of Technology winner says he's "ready and able to start a revolution." Using hydrogen and aluminum as a fuel, an engine would be able to produce it's own energy without ever needing to fuel up. The best part? No CO2 emissions.http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18700750/The worst part? "The egos of program managers at DOE [Department of Energy] are holding up the revolution," he said.

Honda confirms hydrogen fuel-cell sedan for 2008
    2007-05-11 16:36:00
Honda has announced that it will launch a hydrogen fuel-cell sedan next year as well as a new high volume hybrid vehicle priced under its $25,000 Civic hybrid in 09. The announcement was made at yesterday’s demonstration of Honda’s FCX fuel-cell prototype in Washington, a four-door concept with a range of 270 miles and a top speed of 100mph. “We’re calling this the ‘FCX Concept’ but I can assure you it is not just some far out, pie-in-the-sky exercise in what may or may not come to fruition some day in the distant future,” said Honda fuel-cell marketing manager Steve Ellis in an interview with reporters from The Detroit News. Ellis explained that the new vehicle is key to attracting more green-conscious customers and that it will be initially launched in Japan and the US only. A major problem holding back the introduction of more hydrogen powered vehicles is the lack of hydrogen fueling stations. One solution Honda is considering is launching an experimental home energ
