Art therapy useful to treat mental illness
    2008-07-08 09:51:29
Elizaberta López Pérez, a Bachelor of Fine Arts and doctor in Painting at the University of Granada, has carried out one of the first studies in a Spanish university on the use of art therapy for the treatment of acute mental sick persons. Her work, based on psychoanalysis principles, starts from a basic premise: A work of art is a sign formed as a vital trace and its essential material is the humanity of the human being who leaves his memory in the world. read more

How To Help Someone With Mental Illness
    2008-07-01 11:01:00
*This is an older post that I brought back to the surface for a couple of reasons (1) Today is a holiday so it would not be very patriotic to work on Canada's Day(2) Freaking Effexor headache which was expected but still rather annoying and is screwing up my concentration.Anyway enough with the excuses and on with the postHow To Help Someone With Mental IllnessOver the course of this blog I have received numerous emails about people who are in a desperate situation trying to help someone in their life who is not mentally well. Unfortunately this is a difficult place to be in as there is not a lot that can be done but that does not mean it is impossible.1. Change. The best medication, the best programs, the best therapy and the best doctors in the world mean absolutely nothing if the person who is sick does not want to change. This change needs to come from within the person and not the result of wanting to please others around him or her. I have seen to many people whose treatment

    Music And Mental Illness
    2008-05-21 07:47:00
Chances are if I am at the computer there is music playing. For whatever the reason I always seem to need something playing in the background in order to concentrate. Anyway I have decided to compose a list of music videos that are tied into some aspect of mental illness. YouTube has been weird lately and I keep running into the message "This video is unavailable in your country" which I am guessing has to do with copyright laws but like I said I am guessing. Anyway on with the list.1. Matchbox 20 - Unwell2. Johnny Cash/Nine Inch Nails - Hurt- This piece is a Nine Inch Nails song that Johnny Cash redid wonderfully. 3. Counting Crows - Round here4. Metallica - One5. Billy Talent - Nothing to lose6. Goo Goo Dolls - Iris7. Nirvana - Lithium8. Silverchair - Ana's Song (Open Fire)9. Aerosmith - Janie's Got A Gun10. Alice In Chains - Down In A Hole11. Black Crowes - She Talks To Angels12. Pearl Jam/Alice In Chains/Downface/? - Alone- All sorts of theories on who sings it but none the le

Start at the Store: 7 Ways to Prevent Foodborne Illness
    2008-05-16 00:04:00
Safeguarding your home against foodborne illnesses begins not at home, but at the supermarket, grocery store, or any other place where you buy food that you plan to store and serve.Combating foodborne illnesses is a top priority at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). That's because, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), foodborne ailments cause about 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,200 deaths nationwide each year. You as a consumer can play a key role in preventing these illnesses. While shopping for food, you should:1. Check for cleanliness.Buying from a retailer who follows proper food handling practices helps assure that the food is safe. Ask yourself: What is the general impression of this facility? Does it look and smell clean?2. Keep certain foods separated.Separate raw meat, poultry, and seafood from other foods in your grocery shopping cart. Place these foods in plastic bags to prevent their juices from dripping on other foods. It is also best to

Herbal Remedies To Cure Common Illness
    2008-05-13 20:49:00
Herbal remedies are an increasingly popular choice today as people often make self-medication based on catalogs, internet sites and visits to health food stores. Sales of herbal remedies in chemists, health stores and supermarkets have doubled in a decade. But using herbal home remedies can be a gamble and even a risk. People taking prescription medications should talk to their doctors before taking herbs or even certain vitamins but even those who rarely take a pill should seek advice before turning to herbs. It is always best to get a consultation before consuming any herbal remedies. Herbal medicines, which contain extracts from plants and minerals, account for the fastest growth. Scientific tests have shown there is evidence that some could have a beneficial effect. Herbs are used to stimulate the body's self-healing powers and remove the underlying cause of illness. Then the herbs are used to nourish and tone all the organs and systems of the body from the inside out. As it is, no

    Military And Mental Illness
    2008-04-18 11:14:00
There has been a new study that just came out that states 300,000 US troops suffer from Major Depressive Disorder and/or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder also an additional 300,000 have suffered brain injuries. Out of these numbers only half have sought out treatment. This works out to 18.5 percent of United States troops are suffering from a mental disorder so roughly one in five. Very scary.(MSNBC article)I wrote the following post near the start of this blog:PTSD - The disorder that is about to explodePost Traumatic Stress Disorder is not a whole heck of a lot of fun. Basic Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is watching or experiencing something tragic or along those line, Chronic Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is witnessing or being a part of long term events that have left a major mark on your psyche, think long term abuse or military service on foreign land. The big thing when it comes to either form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is that your constantly haunted by what you saw o

Chronic illness is main factor for taking supplements, so Reuters says.
    2008-04-04 15:46:00
I read an article from Reuters today Chronic illness main factor in supplement use. It's focus is from a study done and states: Having one or more chronic illness is the primary factor associated with the use of dietary supplements. Cancer survivors also use supplements to treat chronic medical conditions, but not specifically for cancer, a new study shows.I have to say I've never had cancer or any other disease like this and I'm a supplement user. I take a whole food supplement because I don't always eat right, even though I do try. I also know how poor our food source is today so even the perfect eaters are not getting the same nutrients they would have gotten even 10 years ago.Yes, I also market this whole food multi that I take every day and not one of my customers have had cancer or any serious disease. They take the supplement to "supplement their diet."Reuters article here.Whole Food Nation www.AreVitaminsSafe.com

Attempting to Parent through the Blur of Illness
    2008-02-21 07:19:26
I am more sick than I can remember being in a long time. Again last night it took a long time for my fever to break, as I lie there shivering. And again this morning I do not feel well. I feel like I'm in a fog... my head pounds, regardless of medication taken. And my husband won't be home for supper. Looks like we're ordering pizza. I can barely make myself cook on a good day -- I'm certainly not entering the kitchen today. This is not a great time for me to be sick because I need to be in top form. Mike is in Luverne, apparently, missing his court appearance yesterday. There is a warrant out for his arrest. He's hiding from the law, but his my space tells everyone where he is. And, ironically, the mood he has chosen is "peaceful." However, a few germs are moderately (Giardia, Hepatitis A) to highly (Cryptosporidium) chlorine-resistant. The table above shows the approximate disinfection times for these germs in chlorinated water.Above from the CDC website. As you can see, even in perfectly balanced water it takes time to kill some germs. If you or your children are sick, don't swim and risk getting others sick as well.If you take care of a swimming pool please buy and use good testing products.Test often and adjust chemicals as needed.Chemical products other than chlorine may take much longer to kill theses germs.Visit Swimming pool Services Directory for info on swimming pool builders retailers and service companies.

Sickle cell anaemia is an inherited blood disorder which mostly affects people of the African dynasty. It is believed that the sickle cell aneamia is the result of a gene mutation which occurred thousands of years ago in Africa due to malaria. In the United States, approximately eight percent of African Americans have sickle aneamia trait and one in every five hundred have the disease.Sickle cell anaemia is a blood disorder that affects the haemoglobin, a protein that fills the red blood cells and carries oxygen throughout the body. Sickle cell anemia occurs when a person inherits two abnormal genes that cause the disc shaped red blood cells to change their shape to crescent.Medical genetics is constantly working on the treatment for the genetic disease such as sickle anaemia .The National Institute of Science and Media have various titles on the subject of biotechnology and other branches of life science. Some Conditions That Apply To Critical Illness Insurance.
    2007-12-28 01:23:00
Critical illness insurance may sometimes surprise us with some cases, in this case, antiselection. For example, people already suffering from a critical illness may have applied for a critical illness policy without making their insurers aware of the disease. But precautions can be taken against such cases. In fact the policy documents may contain a section named as the waiting period. The waiting period may vary according to the critical illness conditions and can be between two to six months. Critical illness insurance may cover the person only after the waiting period had passed. Moreover, if the critical illness insurance provides an additional benefit, there may be a survival period alongside the waiting period. Should a critical illness take place, the patient may have to wait for the end of the survival period before a payment is made. The survival period may only last two weeks. One month can be the maximum waiting time. [ car , insurance , life ] Furthermore, the highest age of entry at which a person can buy critical illness cover may be 55, the age of maturity being 65. This may vary from one market to another and can also depend upon the decision of a company. Companies may tend to insure less people having reached the age of maturity. The statistics about their critical illness claims may not be as reliable and also claim rates may not remain fixed from year to year. Knowing the rate at which a critical illness occurs may be a difficult task. Some countries may not have reliable and accurate statistical data sources which can be used to determine the severity of a critical illness, for example among men. Figures may help to study which critical illness conditions affect men mostly, for example heart attack. Other results may also demonstrate people of different age groups that suffer a specific critical illness. Therefore, assuming the rate of antiselection may also be inaccurate. So, the risks to have antiselection amongst all the critical illnes

Things To Know About Critical Illness Insurance.
    2007-12-28 01:16:00
Critical illness insurance tends to often take the form of a rider. For example, critical illness related life policy. Critical illness cover may also be combined with term or endowment both being the underlying or main policies. On the other hand, standalone critical illness cover may have become less important and lest looked for. However, it may still be offered by a minimum of companies and markets around the world. There may be two types of critical illness insurance. Both may provide separate types of benefits. They can be called accelerated benefits and additional benefits. The one which provides the accelerated benefit can be the most common form of cover. It may award a proportion of the sum insured of the main policy. Therefore when critical illness strikes, there may be enough money to pay for medical care while the policy still remains in force. The second one with additional benefit may provide additional benefits without altering the whole sum insured of the underlying policy. In contrast, traditional critical illness policies may pay benefits only once after which the policy may come to an end. [ car , insurance , life ] Furthermore, in some countries health and accident insurances may be extended to cover some important aspects of critical illness insurance. At the same time, critical illness insurance policies may be also including elements such as disability and long term care. Insurance companies may have been opting to follow this path so that they could well market their products. Although the above argument may seem well balanced, it is however believed to be too early to think about the amalgam of different products. Furthermore, critical illness cover for a specific gendre may have also become essential. For example, new critical illness plans may have been designed for women concerning the most frequent illnesses they suffer from. This type of critical illness policy may be common in Hong Kong where a critical illness such as breast can

    Reinsurance Of Critical Illness Insurance.
    2007-12-20 11:52:00
The risks factors in critical illness insurance may be greater than that of life insurance. Reinsurance of critical illness insurance may be a solution to eliminate some of the financial loss an insurance company might incur. The procedure may take place through quota share or an excess of reinsurance. Let’s have a look at some of the factors important for the reinsurance of critical illness insurance. There had been difficulties in assuming the incidence rates. So, the critical illness premiums values may be readjusted or reviewed depending on the magnitude of the loss made by the company. Insurers and reinsurers may then avoid premium guarantees exceeding five years. As a matter of fact, if the insurer decides to increase the critical illness premium rates, the reinsurer also might have to share an equal proportionality in these increases. [ car , insurance , life ] Furthermore, reinsurance might be used by insurers in the critical illness segments where they have less experience. For example, small life insurers might choose to follow a trend for their critical illness products dissimilar to that of their pure life products so that they would have to suffer less. Moreover, if the critical illness insurance is a prepayment, the insurer and the reinsurer may be required to have an equal involvement concerning both life and critical illness risks. Otherwise in case of a doubtful critical illness claim, problems might crop between the insurer and the reinsurer. For example if the insured died due to a heart attack, the fact that the critical illness was in rule with the policy definitions may remain unclear. As said before, the insurer and reinsurer may have to share the life and the critical illness risk equally. If that’s not the case, both parties might then have the idea to either make the claim a death claim or a critical illness claim. This may depend on the cause of the claim. Thus, the loss whether it be a root of critical illness or life may affect bo

    Cause of Illness
    2007-09-27 16:50:00
From the moment of conception within a mother's womb, we are living, moving and growing creatures. This energy of life comes partly from our parents as genetic inheritance and partly from the nourishment of food, drink, emotions, ideas, and vibrations. Because we are alive, we must keep ourselves in good condition. Without this constant conditioning, it is easy to deteriorate. At times we say to ourselves that we don't feel well. At that moment, we already know that something is going wrong. This feeling is our signal that normal body functions are beginning to make changes. The unpleasant symptoms of the aches and pains are an attempt by the body to reestablish harmony. But, to you, that headache certainly doesn't feel like harmony! When symptoms are present, the energy within the internal organs as well as the muscles and tissues doesn't circulate well. Physical and emotional suffering is an expression of imbalance. These changes are, nonetheless, the body's attempt to conser
