Do Vegetarians Have Stronger Immune System?
    2008-06-23 09:29:00
Rev up your immune system by eating all kinds of fruits and veggies. Plant foods contain a vast amount of compounds that can boost immunity, including vitamin C and beta carotene.A study at the German Cancer Research Center compared the blood of male vegetarians and meat eaters. They found that vegetarians' white cells were twice as deadly against tumor cells as those of carnivores. This means vegetarians needed only half as many white cells to do the same job as meat eaters did. Why vegetarians' white cells are more deadly is not clear. Researchers speculated they may yield greater armies of natural killer cells or more feroious (natural killer) NK cells. Not surprisingly, the vegetarians also had much higher levels of carotene in their blood. Beta carotene from fruits and veggies is a documented friend of your immune system.Eat spinach and carrots and other fruits and veggies rich in beta carotene. Studies show carotene boosts immune defenses against both bacterial and viral infection

6 Steps to a Powerful Immune System
    2008-04-24 08:42:23
It is no secret that we eat to stay alive. We are told from the time we are children that food provides energy, exercise keeps you in shape and herbs are only for those who "believe." But there's more to it than that - these are the "tools" that can help boost your immune system. Here are 6 steps for starters... Food provides far more than energy. The nutrients in food are your building blocks. Your body uses these on a daily basis to make new cells including white blood cells, also known as immune cells. In fact - this balanced diet should be explained further to include eating plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. And just so you know - organic produce has been shown to have up to 40% more nutrients. Eating plenty of healthy foods such as fruits and veggies will give you the building blocks your body will use to boost your immune system.Just as healthy food gives you the building blocks necessary to boost your immune system, junk food will rob your body of these nutrients leaving less

Can Immune System Have an Impact on Asthma and Allergies?
    2008-04-20 12:29:54
Every human being has a natural immune system. It is comprised of, among others, tears, skin, mucus, cough, stomach acid, white blood cells. These ingredients are continuously at work, to thwart harmful substances like antigens - harmful chemicals, bacteria, viruses - from creating diseases and conditions.Medical fraternity concedes that many diseases like psoriasis, asthma, allergies, arthritis have their root cause in an impaired or low immune system.Immune system can be improved through as series of measures like regular dose of mineral supplements, multi-vitamins, vitamin C in proper quantity and a diet plan which is heavy on vegetables and fruits and other protein rich food. A regular intake of omega-3 fatty acid rich foods and legumes and a strict no-no to alcohol, saturated fats will help a lot. It should be supported by:* Exercise* relaxation* rest* Positive frame of mindDo you suffer from a low immune system? Then you must protect yourself from radiation and too much of sun light.

Using Herbs to Boost the Immune System
    2008-04-14 19:30:25
Taking herbal supplements is an excellent way to help boost your body's immune system. Herbs are a form of food. In fact, herbal supplements are simply dried and ground plants which are then put into a gel capsule for easy swallowing. This means they're very much like a condensed version of healthy vegetables and fruits, [...]

My Immune System Confronts a Virus
    2008-04-06 02:45:00
After a stem cell transplant, it's a little scary to run into a familiar old enemyby Jason CarpenterAs I reached Day 21 of my stem cell transplant, my recovery hit a very scary wall. I woke up with a fever of 102 and could barely lift my head off my pillow. I felt that little tingle in the back of my throat and knew right away what it was: the common cold. For a stem-cell-transplant patient, though, a cold is anything but common. Quoth the International Myeloma Foundation: “Even a minor infection...can lead to serious problems because the body’s immune system is so weakened by the effects of the high-dose chemotherapy and the loss of blood cells.” Translation: I could die. Immune system
    2008-04-05 08:43:00
The body protects itself from infectious organisms through the host defense system. Three lines of defense include:• physical and chemical barriers to infection• the inflammatory response• the immune response.Immune system structures• Composed of lymph nodes, thymus, spleen, and tonsils.Types of immunity• Cell-mediated immunity — T cells respond to antigen.• Humoral immunity — B cells respond to antigen.Types of immune disorders• Immunodeficiency disorders• Hypersensitivity disorders• Autoimmune disordersHow immune disorders develop• Allergic rhinitis — type I, IgE-mediated response to allergen.• Anaphylaxis — type I allergic reaction from systemic exposure to antigen.• Human immunodeficiency virus disease — ribonucleic acid retrovirus replicates within the CD4+ cell, resulting in cell death.• Lupus erythematosus — antibodies are produced against body’s own cells; normal immunity suppressed by formed antigen-antibody complex that results in tissu

    MacroPhage in Immune system
    2008-04-03 09:22:00
Macrophages are cells within the tissues that originate from specific white blood cells called monocytes. Monocytes and macrophages are phagocytes, acting in both non-specific defense (or innate immunity) as well as specific defence (or cell-mediated immunity) of vertebrate animals. Their role is to phagocytose (engulf and then digest) cellular debris and pathogens either as stationary or mobile cells, and to stimulate lymphocytes and other immune cells to respond to the pathogen.Macrophages are versatile cells that play many roles. As scavengers, they rid the body of worn-out cells and other debris. They are foremost among the cells that "present" antigen; a crucial role in initiating an immune response. As secretory cells, monocytes and macrophages are vital to the regulation of immune responses and the development of inflammation; they churn out an amazing array of powerful chemical substances (monokines) including enzymes, complement proteins, and regulatory factors such as interl

‘Invisible’ bacteria dupe the human immune system
    2008-02-19 09:46:58
Scientists at the University of York have characterised an important new step in the mechanism used by bacteria to evade our immune system. It is an ‘invisibility cloak’ which means that bacteria like Haemophilus influenzae, a common cause of ear infections in children, can move about the body without the risk of being attacked by the immune system. read more

    Strengthening the Immune System
    2008-02-05 18:30:51
If the immune system is weakened or malfunctioning, the invading microbes can easily establish a foothold in our body and open a window for disease to enter. Antibiotics can often be used to stop the infection at this point, but chronic use of antibiotics weakens the immune response. Furthermore, antibiotics are useless against viruses, pollens, [...]

    Helping The Immune System:
    2007-12-05 07:11:00
A functioning individual’s immune system is the natural shield the body uses to keep viruses, bacteria and other disease causing organisms at bay. But unlike the respiratory system or the circulatory system, the immune system is a collection of mechanisms that are triggered into action as soon as it detects a virus. For the immune system to detect and successfully destroy an invading virus or bacteria, it is vital that it distinguishes between the infectors and the body’s own healthy cells and tissues. This is a complex task though as these infectors are constantly evolving and adapting themselves to the characteristics of the host. The good news is the extent to which the human body has evolved. Our adaptability to the various ills that come with a continuously changing world has helped arm the immune system better. The progress made by immunoinformatics has greatly contributed in fortifying the human body further. Vaccines, drugs, antibiotics, organ transplants, etc. are the new defenses that have been developed by medical science to aid the immune system in its battle against pathogens. The study of immunoinformatics is an emerging field of study that comes under bioinformatics. The advances made in this field of biotechnology are still being worked upon and developed by scientists.New discoveries are being made every day in the research laboratories. The field has a bright scope for young minds looking to establish a career in the science of biotechnology. Visit the National Institute of Science Media for research and study material on biotechnology and related branches of science.Joel Ball is a renowned publisher of life enhancing books that enrich the mind of the student and researcher alike.

Three Approaches To Boosting Immune System Of Cancer Patients
    2007-11-12 23:04:01
People struck with cancer can be in a very tight spot, a Catch 22 situation actually. You see, in order for medical doctors to deal with cancer, they have to eradicate the cells that are already stricken with the disease; but in the process called chemotherapy, even the good cells are also damaged and this eventually leads to weaker immune system. In short, cancer patients have to deal with both cancer cells and the risk of being infected by various other diseases. If you have cancer, you must understand that once you go ahead with the cancer treatment, you must also aim to strengthen your immune system. You simply can not neglect either one; otherwise, your battle with a deadly disease will be for naught. By following three approaches that will help you nurture your immune system in the face of a disease like cancer; you increase your chances of getting back to your normal healthy life.Food That You EatAbove anything else, you must keep in mind that the food that you eat can either imp

The Connection between Brain and Immune System
    2007-11-11 04:00:00
RSS CrossRef Search and visit Healthlines: Inflammation. Share us your Thoughts! Thanks to the scientific detective work of Kevin Tracey, MD, it turns out that the brain talks directly to the immune system, sending commands that control the body’s inflammatory response to infection and autoimmune diseases. Understanding the intimate relationship is leading to a novel way to treat diseases triggered by a dangerous inflammatory response. Stimulation of the vagus nerve could block a rogue inflammatory response and treat a number of diseases, including life-threatening sepsis. The vagus nerve speaks directly to the immune system through a neurochemical called acetylcholine. The inflammatory network: vagus stimulation as a way to shut off abnormal immune system responses. For years stress has been suspected of increasing susceptibility to various infectious diseases or cancer. Now evidence is mounting that the immune system and the nervous system may be inextricably interconnected. The brain may directly influence the immune system by sending messages down nerve cells. Networks of nerve fibers have been found that connect to the thymus gland, spleen, lymph nodes, and bone marrow. Moreover, experiments show that immune function can be altered by actions that destroy specific brain areas.Inflammation is a vital immune response to infection, injury or irritation. It is the basis of humanity's earliest survival. What do paper cuts, spicy foods, stubbed toes and intense workouts at the gym have to do with your odds of getting colon cancer, drifting into Alzheimer's or succumbing to a heart attack? More than you might think. The inflammation-disease connection has become a hot research topic. And it's about to explode. So if you want to stop inflammation, get off that couch and head out to pick up oily fish, fresh produce, garlic and supplements. Acupressure Points for Strengthening the Immune System
    2007-09-13 22:15:00
Acupressure Points for Strengthening the Immune System There is a particular acupressure point, Bearing Support (B 36), that governs resistance, especially resistance to colds and flu. It is located near the spine, off the tips of the shoulder blades. The Chinese book The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine says, wind and cold enter the pores of the skin" at this point.1 It, as well as other points in this area, helps to strengthen the immune system. Conversely, these points around the tips of the shoulder blades are the first to get blocked up just before an illness, especially a cold or flu, takes hold. The following acupressure points are effective for dealing with a condition that may be caused by a weak immune system. Elegant Mansion (K 27) reinforces immune system functioning by strengthening the respiratory system. Steady, firm pressure on the Sea Of Vitality points (B 23 and B 47) fortifies the immune system, rejuvenates the internal organs, and relieves pain associat
