| | | Colon Impresses--Bye Bye 'Belli | | 2008-03-14 05:03:00 | | There was good news and sad news for the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. First, the club released old friend Doug Mirabelli, the personal catcher for Tim Wakefield. Taking over the knuckleball catching duties will be defensive specialist but ultra light hitting Kevin Cash. Dougie's batting average had plummeted from .281 in '04 to .202 last year. Thank you for everything, Dougie. You were there when we needed you, and you will be missed.Bartolo Colon made his Sox pitching debut yesterday and opened some eyes. Wide. Here is what some said after his performance..."...a good two-inning performance in a 3-3 tie with the Tampa Bay Rays proved to be good news for the Red Sox. Colon allowed two hits, one run, a walk, and a home run in two innings. He struck out one of the 10 batters faced."I thought he was way up in the zone," said a scout, "but for his first time out, pretty good. HE'S GOING TO HELP IF HE CONTINUES LIKE THAT."There were a lot of scouts on hand to watch Colon, and the consensus w... | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |

| Chris Long impresses at Combine | | 2008-02-25 14:55:39 | | The more of of Chris Long, the more I seem to come away impressed by him. First of all, you need to consider his impressive interview with the media, which can be viewed here. Below are some highlights from the Q & A session: Q: Has Al Groh told you about Coach Parcells? Would that be an easy transition? A: I've heard a lot about Coach Parcells and Coach Belichick as well. I think Coach Groh is a guy with a tremendous amount of respect for that coaching tree. A lot of his coaching styles and the schemes derive directly from Parcells and that tree. It will be a tough transition whatever I do and wherever I go. I think he does have a lot of similarities. Q: Are you impressed with Tony Sparano and Jeff Ireland? A: I'm impressed with everybody I meet here. This is the NFL. It's certainly a great experience. Everybody I meet is so professional. Obviously that's what they do for a living. They eat, sleep, breath football. Q: How is it practicing against D'Brickashaw Fe... | | By: The Phinsider | | |
| | Playhouse International Wine Festival impresses with age | | 2008-02-22 16:06:00 | | The event was originally called the California Wine Festival, and one winery kicked it all off—Robert Mondavi. In recent years, they’ve thrown the doors open to all comers, except that there’s a lot of politics that goes on backstage as to who gets in—and which wine region gets proclaimed as the theme. Italy got lucky for number 30, and someone with a crotchety Italian-English dictionary came up with the slogan Innovation by Tradition, whatever that means. Nor is that enough of a fine-tuner; there’s also the “global focus”, which this year is sparkling wines. If you’re a lover of all things bright and bubbly, there’s more of what you crave in this year’s festival.

| | Gaither impresses in workout | | 2007-07-10 17:59:13 | | [UPDATE: Concern about Jared Gaither's left shoulder could impact when he is selected in Thursday's supplemental draft. A source tells me that there is a possibility that Gaither will need surgery on the shoulder, and that a determination on that can't be made by Thursday.] University of Maryland offensive tackle Jared Gaither, who has been drawing lots of attention as the NFL Supplemental Draft approaches, worked out for scouts Monday. According to ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli, Gaither was impressive enough that someone will almost certainly take a chance on him in Thursday's draft. Here is some of Pasquarelli's report. The audition was attended by representatives from about half of the NFL's 32 franchises and a few teams. Atlanta and Jacksonville, both of which have indicated interest in Gaither, had multiple scouts at the workout. One scout from an AFC team termed the workout "probably a little better than what we expected." Another AFC scout said Gaither "almos... | | By: Big Blue View | | |

| Bradshaw impresses in mini-camp | | 2007-05-15 15:09:01 | | Scouring through reports on the just-concluded Giants rookie mini-camp, it would seem that one of the most impressive players during the three-day session was running back Ahmad Bradshaw. Here is Coach Tom Coughlin commenting on Bradshaw, after the 7th-round pick from Marshall was particularly solid during Monday morning's workout. "You would have to say Bradshaw had a noticeable (practice) this morning. I thought he did a nice job. He's been back on kickoff returns, on punt returns. He caught the ball coming out of the backfield. You saw a couple runs where he was able to turn the ball north-south. It catches your eye, for sure." Bradshaw is an interesting case. He appears to have the skills to challenge for the job as the Giants third-down back, but there are some serious character concerns about him. That's why he nearly went undrafted. If, however, Bradshaw shows the Giants he can stay out of trouble they might just have found a productive player with their final... | | By: Big Blue View | | |
