| Six Solid Innings Wasn't Enough | | 2008-07-20 11:13:00 | | For six innings, Josh Beckett looked like the guy who struck fear in the hearts of his opponents last October. He scattered five hits, and left runners on third base with less than two outs on two separate occasions. He threw very few pitches, and looked like he'd go all the way in yesterday's game at Anaheim. He did go all the way: eight innings in a 4-2 loss to the Angels.Kevin Youkilis hit his 17th home run, a two-run shot in the second, and it looked like it would hold up. But the Red Sox could not add to it, and they had opportunities to do so.It all came apart on Beckett in the seventh, as he gave up a leadoff homer to Vladimir Guerrero, and then put two more men on base. A sacrifice and an intentional walk brought up Erick Aybar as a pinch-hitter, and he promptly tripled down the right field line to make it 4-2 L.A. Coco Crisp made a sensational catch up against the wall in right center or it would have been more. But the Red Sox once again had opportunities to get back in it, as ... | | By: The Mighty Quinn Media Machine | | |

| Two Bad Innings | | 2008-07-03 22:21:04 | | Game Eighty-Six - Cubs 3 Giants 8
WP - Tim Lincecum (10-1) LP - Sean Gallagher (3-4) Save - None
The Cubs struggles on the road continued on Thursday night. The Giants scored 7 of their 8 runs in two big innings....four in the 2nd and three in the 7th. Sean Gallagher gave up 4 runs, 3 earned, on 4 hits in the 2nd. Tim Lincecum drove in the Giants second run of the game with a 2-out single to right and scored the Giants' third run on a triple by Fred Lewis.
The Cubs cut the Giants' lead to 4-3 in the 6th and put the tying run on 3rd with 2 outs in the 7th but Keiichi Yabu struck out Derrek Lee on three pitches to end the inning.
Jose Ascanio started the bottom of the 7th and gave up a bloop single to Jose Castillo. Ascanio misplayed an attempted sacrifice bunt by Omar Vizquel and his throwing error put runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs. Lou Piniella brought in Carlos Marmol and Bruce Bochy countered with pinch hitter Rich Aurilia. Marmol fell behind Aurilia 2-0 and then elevated an... | | By: Chicago Cubs Online

| Cubs win in 15 innings | | 2008-04-10 04:29:00 | | The Cubs just outlasted the Pirates tonight. Ryan Dempster threw the ball very well in his 2nd start. He pitched 7 inning, allowed 1 hit, no runs, 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. The Cubs had built a 2-0 lead by this time and Marmol pitched an inning and allowed a run. Kerry Wood came in for the save and the first batter, Jason Bay, hit a home run to tie it up.
In the 14th Aramis Ramirez hit a 2-run home run to put the Cubs up 4-2, but a 2-run home run hit by LaRoche tied it back up. On to the 15th.
After a wild pitch with runners on 1st and 2nd, the Pirates intentionally walk Soriano so they can face Felix Pie who was 0-3 in the game. Pie came in a a defensive replacement in the 7th inning. Pie singled to left field and the Cubs took a 6-4 lead. Sean Marshall got his first big league save on the day he was called up the big leagues.
Don’t know what else to say about it. The Cubs had it where they wanted it late in a ga... | | By: Another Cubs Blog

| Shutout innings | | 2008-02-22 05:17:01 | | I’m sure this stat is available elsewhere, but I hadn’t paid much attention if it was until today. Bill James Online began today and for the cheap monthly rate of $3 you get access to lots of things to make it well worth the money. There are a bunch of articles and columns already up on the site and quite a few stats that I’ve enjoyed browsing through some today. A little bit ago I was taking a look at the Inning Analysis stat which includes such stats as: one-run innings, two-run innings (and forward), how many times the first man in an inning reached base, the runs scored in those innings, 1-2-3 innings, 10-pitch or fewer innings, 20 or more pitches in an inning and the title of this post shutout innings.
It drew my attention because I was taking a look at Carlos Zambrano (2007) and saw that of the 216.1 IP he threw, 172 of those innings no runs scored. That’s 79.5% of the overall innings pitched. Zambrano did start 226 innings (he... | | By: Another Cubs Blog

Things to take from the game
1. Second Guessing
It’s been a good day for the armchair managers. Let’s see:
Lou pulls Hill, who has thrown 66 pitches in 6 shutout innings, so that Ward can pinch-hit with a runner on second and two outs in a 0-0 game. Doesn’t work.
Lou asked Barrett, hitting fourth and with no sac. bunts on the year, to bunt with runners on 1st and 2nd and nobody out in a 1-0 game in the eighth. Doesn’t work.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth, Lou pinch hits Aramis Ramirez for the hot-hitting Pagan, a move that requires Jones to enter the game as a defensive replacement. Doesn’t work.
Lou pulls Wuertz, after an effective seventh, for Eyre, who hasn’t pitched in a week, to start the eighth. Doesn’t work. (Eyre gives up HR to Ethier,... | | By: The Cub Reporter

| Extended Innings For Fourth Day | | 2007-05-14 14:10:00 | | In May of 1996, the Red Sox were sure to be tired as on May 11 they played the Jays for 11 innings and won 6 to 5. The next day they played and lost 9 to 8 (11 innings), May 13th they lost once more 8-7 (13 innings) finally on the 14th they won against the Angels 4-3, a game that only took 12 innings... So in short the 14th marks the fourth extra inning game the Red Sox played in a row. This is a rare occurence especially in a non-playoff/world series game... | | By: Red Sox Yesteryear | | |
