    C'elle Stem Cell Research Innovation
    2008-07-11 00:28:00
Just the other day , I saw the promotion of C'elle Stem Cell Research Innovation of harvesting, processing and storing stem cells from a woman's menstrual blood, I think many of you have not have enough time to read, research and decide if you should store your stem cells this way. Well, honestly, for a new innovation like this, I too required a little time to digest what it is all about. Some of my friends have experience with storing of cord blood of their babies but I am single and have not

    Innovation and Engineering
    2008-07-10 02:58:00
I read this article from EDN by Rick Nelson, Editor-in-Chief, it gives an interesting insite into one future for engineering, an exciting one and one that we should chase after and promote, to every kid who is searching for a positive future. The lastest comments from the G8 conference was an admitance that it is only going to be you and me who set the world back on it's right course, we need to get involved in climate change and bring Innovation, and "out the box" thinking to make a difference. This article could be the start for many. Driving meta-innovation worldwide.........The need for these new definitions occurred to me while listening to a keynote speech titled “The Dreams of Engineers: What's Next?” that Geoffrey C Orsak, dean of the Southern Methodist University School of Engineering, presented at a conference on mechatronics (sponsored by EDN and sibling publications) held May 13 in Santa Clara, CA.As an example of redeployment of ancient technology, Orsak cited SkySails

Gmail Labs: An innovation from google labs
    2008-06-06 02:32:00
If you are a Gmail user, soon you will find a tab on your gmail page to access a new part of the service called “Gmail Labs”. Gmail Labs, a product from Google Labs, will initially provide 13 features to the Gmail users to add to their service. It is a part of the nifty development model followed by google. Any engineer having a new idea for a Gmail feature can publish it on the Gmail Labs site, and users can test it out and provide feedback directly to the engineer who wrote it. Let's take a tour to the new features of Gmail Labs. Here are the features that looks most beneficial to me: Superstars: It provides additional star icons as in standard Gmail. You will be able to mark your messages with different colored stars and other icons like a check mark or exclamation point. Quick Links: It is a way of bookmarking any page within Gmail. You can do a search and bookmark that search. Go back to it again and the link will display any new messages that fit the search crit

MBA Dissertation: Managing Creativity And Innovation
    2008-06-02 00:32:00
Consider the following points while writing a theses on Managing Creativity and Innovation. There are a number of critical issues to master in the art of creativity and innovation management:• What are the critical differences between creativity and innovation? Are different competencies required?• Do "creative people" have common characteristics and, if so, what are they? Are they stable across situations?• Can creativity be learned and developed or is it a special gift? Why is it that some people just are more creative?• Why is motivation more important than nature or nurture? How can it be enhanced, measured and managed?• Blocks and unlocking. Organisational culture. We can all be more creative, so what is stopping us? What properties of an organisational culture cultivate productivity?• What properties of an organisational structure foster creativity and innovation? Organisational structure results from a number of factors and modifying it is often not desireable, so h

MRI Innovation Allows Detection of Subtle Traumatic Brain Injuries
    2008-05-28 10:12:32
DALLAS, May 12 -- Tracking progress and predicting outcomes after severe traumatic brain injury may be possible with an innovative MRI-based technique, researchers here said.Called diffusion tensor tractography, the method offers an improved way to measure multifocal nerve damage within the brain after severe head trauma, according to Ramon Diaz-Arrastia, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and colleagues in the May issue of Archives of Neurology. In a case-control study involving 12 patients with head injuries and 12 healthy volunteers, the technique showed clear differences in axonal integrity within key brain regions, the researchers reported.Action Points * Explain to interested patients that the small study found that a novel MRI technique could measure an otherwise hard-to-detect form of brain injury that correlates with functional outcome. * Explain that the case-control study involved only two dozen patients. The findings need to be confi

    Lasik - A Technical Innovation.
    2008-04-22 08:20:00
Lasik refers to a refractive laser surgery performed on eyes of the person suffering from myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. This surgery is very convenient for a patient as it takes comparatively less time and the patient does not feel much pain. Many people prefer this kind of surgery over wearing eyeglass or contact lenses. Lasik technique is a type of surgery which is very cost effective and can be done in a very short time period. Nowadays, this type of eye surgery is well performed in Lasik vision institute.[ lasik , patients , surgery ]This technique of Lasik was first introduced by a Spanish ophthalmologist and in 1960, he developed the first microkeratome. At that time it was used to cut thin flaps in the cornea region and to change its shape. In the year 1990, Lasik surgery was developed and it rapidly became popular due to its reward of greater precision and less complications. ETF new Innovation of investment !!
    2008-04-16 02:19:13
Exchange traded funds (or ETFs) are open-ended investment companies that can be traded at any time throughout the course of the day. Typically, ETFs try to replicate a stock market index such as the S&P 500, a market sector such as energy or technology, or a commodity such as gold or petroleum. In short, ETFs are similar to index mutual funds, but are traded more like stocks. As you would expect, ETFs along with all investment products, have their share of advantages and disadvantages. It’s important to understand these differences as you consider how to invest your money. ETF’s provide more flexibility than mutual funds. Because ETFs are listed on an exchange, you can buy and sell them at whatever price they happen to be trading at during the day, just as with stocks. Mutual funds, by contrast, are priced only once, at the end of the trading each day. And, because ETFs trade like stocks, you can also buy them on margin, that is, buy shares with borrowed money in hopes of magnifying

iPod Camera Connector Okay, so you still have 20 GB of available space on your iPod Photo, but you've completely filled the 512 MB card in your digital camera... and your laptop is back in the hotel. What do you do? That's easy! Connect your iPod Camera Connector to your iPod, connect your camera's USB cable, and copy all the photos to your iPod. But all is not so cool, to view a slideshow of your imported photos on iPod or on a television connected to iPod, you must transfer them to your computer first, and then reimport them to your iPod using iTunes. Tata Nano (World's Cheapest Car) - An Innovation that Fuels the Indian Dream
    2008-02-15 16:37:59
The US economy might not be in its best times, but the growth and revolutions in emerging markets like India are breaking all barriers! The latest to hit the ever-growing Asian and European markets is the sensational Tata Nano - the no-fuss, fuel-efficient energy car that has fueled every Indian's dream to own a car. Anywhere else, a new car may have received some acclaim for what it's worth, but in india, things are different. Advertised as "the world’s cheapest car", the Nano is a no-frills automobile designed by Tata to be affordable to millions who commute on 2-wheelers carrying a family of 4-6!! The impact is huge, and everyone is excited at the prospect of owning a car that is only 1 lakh rupees ($2500). But whether it stands the tests of time, and whether it creates more problems than solutions is yet to be seen.Termed as a "People's Car", it is a cute (or maybe not!!), compact car designed to appeal to first-time car buyers in one of the world’s fastest growing car markets.

Long Island Innovation Council: Part One
    2007-10-23 12:23:00
What if every large municipality, and maybe consortia of smaller ones, create a "Department of Innovation" which then places a member on a "Long Island Council of Innovation" in concert with the major (and consortia of minor) non-profit, business and other relevant Long Island Organizations? Sort of a sub-division and natural extension of the Long Island Congress concept. What if, before government and other funding organizations of all types support a project, the project must comply with the "One Long Island" constitution and guidelines?I'm not a big fan of mandates and bureaucracy, but they do and will continue to exist (although hopefully in a limited context). Why not use them to help implement the "One Long Island" project which will in turn lessen the need for mandates and bureaucracy over time?As we've stated previously, there is plenty of money already "in the system" to help restructure Long Island and set it up for a bright future.  More in Part Two.

Executives on Global Technology and Innovation
    2007-08-28 23:00:52
What global executives think about technology and innovation Authors: McKinsey Quartely Journal: McKinsey Quartely A survey uncovers shared perspectives on the challenges now facing companies, but IT execs must still sell tech innovation to business leaders. A recent McKinsey Global Survey of Business Executives suggests that technology executives are more bullish about innovation and automation than are their business counterparts and see managing global scale and finding skilled people as two of their biggest challenges. Our survey polled some 9,300 business and technology leaders around the world (Exhibit 1) on the most important trends affecting the global economy during the next five years, particularly factors that could promote or constrain growth. Overall, business and technology executives see eye to eye: both identify the increasing pace of technological innovation, the growing affluence of emerging economies, and low-cost offshore manufactur

    Keys to Innovation
    2007-07-26 02:53:49
Lee Copeland's CAST keynote address referenced in a previous post was not only about books. Good books was one of the items on Lee's list of eight recent innovations in software testing. Lee's complete list is shown below.Innovations in Software Testing(Lee Copeland's List)Context-Driven School Testing Specialties Test-First Development Really Good Books Open Source Tools Session-Based Test Management Testing Workshops CertificationI was glad to see most of the items on this list. I am especially happy to see the Context-Driven School and Session-Based Test Management on the list. I believe that these have had a significant impact on software testing and have great potential that has not yet been realized.Tester certification may be an innovation but I don't think its impact has been good. In my opinion, the current certification options are bad. (There was a certification debate hosted by AST at CAST this year. Please take a look at Tim Coulter's review: AST Certification D

Frontiers of Evolutionary Economics: Competition, Self-Organization, and Innovation Policy
    2007-07-21 17:02:00
Author: John FosterPaperback: 416 pagesPublisher: Edward Elgar Publishing (August 2001)Language: EnglishISBN: 1840645253Modern evolutionary economics is now nearly two decades old and in this excellent book, a distinguished group of evolutionary economists identify the most important developments and discuss the direction of future research. By moving away from traditional concerns with the operation of selection mechanisms towards a preoccupation with the manner in which the novelty and variety provide fuel for such mechanisms, the authors identify a key development in the field. Evolutionary economists have been drawn into the modern complexity science literature which attempts to provide an understanding of how and why ‘complex adaptive systems’ engage in processes of self-organization. The goal is to provide an integrated analysis of both selection and self-organization that is uniquely economic in orientation. After a brief overview of the many key achieveme

Thanks to the Information Innovation Exchange ...
    2007-07-12 16:25:00
... at Long Island University for adding the Long Island Idea Factory to their blogroll.Nice people doing excellent work. Thanks again. Also, a good idea here in  Suffolk County. Sounds like it has the potential to be a great program.  The MBIA has been providing a similar service for some time now.Its called the "Shared Services Initiative" and part of its mission is to share information technology. Again, we repeat. Please make sure this integrates with other initiatives on Long Island. It will be a perfect component of the Long Island 3.0/Long Island Congress concept if designed properly."Gary Bixhorn, chief operating officer of Eastern Suffolk BOCES, said Levy's initiative, which he welcomes, is "more a functional consolidation, rather than an organizational consoldiation."Now we're on the right track.

Business Model Innovation in Wal-Mart’s approach to banking
    2007-06-23 14:19:38
Wal-Mart’s announcement this week that it is forging ahead with banking services — despite having been denied a broad banking license due to lobbying by community banks — seemed to shock some in the financial services industry. It shouldn’t have. The company’s move is firmly in line with how it approaches new markets, but the approach is quite distinct from how US financial services firms have traditionally functioned. Wal-Mart is circumventing its recent lobbying defeat by partnering with an array of third party firms, such as GE, to provide a wide array of services such as debit cards, low-cost check cashing, and money transfers. It will use its brick-and-mortar infrastructure to great effect, but will also leverage the convenience of banking while you shop and its reputation for offering excellent value (in a market where pricing can be more than a little opaque). The focus of its effort — for now — will be on the unbanked, including immigra

Other People's Shoes By Jeffrey Baumgartner We have a saying in English: put yourself in the other person's shoes. It means to try and understand the situation from another person's perspective.ABILITY to put yourself in someone else's shoes is one of the greatest creative thinking skills you can have. TRYING to put yourself in another person's shoes is a terrific creativity exercise and an effective ideation method for brainstorming. If you run a business, the people whose shoes you should be trying to put on are your customers. Sure, market research and customer surveys can provide you with lots of information, such as the average age, income, education and more, about your customers. You can even run surveys of your customers to find out how they will react to new products. But, market surveys cannot really tell you what your customers think and feel.In order to do that, you need to be able to put yourself in your customers' shoes. You need to be able to look at your product,
