| (NBC/NEFA) - Voices from the Iraqi Insurgency: An Exclusive Interview with the Islamic Army in Iraq (IAI) | | 2008-07-08 09:20:14 | | (See also - MSNBC Deep Background: "Iraqi insurgents weigh in on American election" ) In an effort to help Americans better understand the evolving dynamics behind the Sunni insurgency in Iraq, I have begun conducting a series of exclusive interviews with prominent Sunni insurgent organizations. The third group to accept my invitation was the Islamic Army in Iraq (IAI), a dominant Sunni faction that has come into frequent conflict with Al-Qaida over the past year. The first groups to accept my invitation were Hamas al-Iraq and the Al-Rashideen Army--arguably two of the most influential Sunni insurgent factions fighting in Iraq . Both groups have insisted that they are...(read more)... | | By: An American Warning | | |

The chart includes representations for the four dominant insurgent umbrella groups--Al-Qaida's Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), the Reform and Jihad Front (RJF), the Political Council for the Iraqi Resistance (PCIR), and the Front for Jihad and Change (FJC)--as well as over twenty individual organizations, including Al-Qaida, the Ansar al-Sunnah Army, the Army of al-Mustafa,...(read more)... | | By: An American Warning

| Will Divisions Undermine the Somali Insurgency? | | 2008-02-28 09:00:29 | | I have an article in the Middle East Times today examining rifts between the ARS (Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia) and the Shabab wing of the Somali insurgency. An excerpt: A communiqué recently issued by Abu
Mansoor al-Amriki, an U.S. jihadist aligned with Shabab, explains the
split between the two groups. Entitled, "A Message to the
Mujahideen in Particular and the Muslims in General," Amriki's
communiqué describes the ARS (which he continues to refer to as "the
Islamic Courts") as nationalist...(read more)... | | By: An American Warning
| | Frontier insurgency spills into Peshawar | | 2008-01-27 13:00:00 | | For centuries, fighting and lawlessness have been part of the fabric of this frontier city. But in the past year, Pakistan's war with Islamic militants has spilled right into its alleys and bazaars, its forts and armories, killing policemen and soldiers and scaring its famously tough citizens. There is a sense of siege here, as the Islamic insurgency pours out of the adjacent tribal region into this city, one of Pakistan's largest, and its surrounding districts. | Al Qaeda and the Taliban's Pakistani insurgency | | 2007-10-03 17:41:00 | | The Taliban are attacking President Pervez Musharraf's hold on political and military power in Pakistan. The Taliban is also working to weaken the resolve of the police, military, and civilians in the Northwest Frontier Province and beyond. The Taliban and al Qaeda have struck Pakistani military bases in Dargai, Kharian, Dera Ismail Khan, Hangu, and North and South Waziristan. Military convoys have been repeatedly hit by suicide attacks, improvised explosive devices, and ambushes throughout the Northwest Frontier Province. The Bannu suicide attack is the latest in series of Taliban suicide strikes at civilian, police, military, and governmental targets inside Pakistan. The tribal agencies have long been recognized as the nexus for al Qaeda and the Taliban's suicide campaigns in Pakistan, Afghanistan and beyond. The Pakistani Ministry of the Interior has repeatedly accused the powerful South Waziristan Taliban leaders Baituallah and Abdullah Mehsud of carrying out the suicide campaigns inside Pakistan. Over 80 percent of Afghanistan's suicide attackers "pass through recruitment, training facilities or safe houses in North or South Waziristan en route to their targets," a Taliban commander told the United Nations. The 2005 London Tubes attacks, the 2006 London Airline plot, numerous suicide attacks and bombings in India, and other plots have been traced back to the Waziristan agencies.... | | By: THE NEW BABYLON TIMES | | |
| | | 'Anti-insurgency ops taking toll on jawans' | | 2007-06-11 13:55:44 | | Prolonged
counter-insurgency operations, with little time for rest and recuperation, are
exacting a heavy toll on the physical endurance and mental health of
soldiers.
Paltry salaries, lack of basic amenities, problems of their
families back home, ineffectual leadership and the constant fear of being
accused of human rights violations only add to the explosive mix. The latest
Defence Institute of Psychological Research (DIPR) study, done at the instance
of defence minister A K Antony after the spurt in suicide and fragging cases in
Army, has stressed the need for "psychological indoctrination" of soldiers
battling militants in Kashmir and the North-East.
"Our troops in LIC
(low-intensity conflict) areas are fighting an enemy that is ambiguous and
almost invisible. The insurgents are highly-motivated individuals, with a sense
of determined purpose," says the study, accessed by TOI.
"In
contrast, soldiers are usually ill-equipped, both materially and
psychologically. The ration... | | By: IBIBO
| | Is it or is it Not Worth the Time to Defeat the Insurgency? | | 2007-05-09 23:47:00 | | The Cafferty File, part of The Situation Room on CNN, poses a question every hour The Situation Room is on. This is today's 5:00 question, and Thoughts on the World's response.------------------------------------------------------------Is it worth spending 10 years to defeat the insurgency in Iraq?Yes. The U.S. liberated Iraq, and we need to finish the job. Imagine a safe haven in Iraq: not for terrorists, but for democracy and lovers of democracy. It will take patience, one thing the American people does not have a great deal of. But we can’t do all the defeating. We have to get the message across to the Iraqi government that THEY have to take the lead in enforcing their laws in their country.... | | By: Thoughts on the World | | |
