"Representatives" of Thai Insurgents Declare a Cease Fire. Don't Hold Your Breath.
    2008-07-17 10:15:10
Thai newspapers are reporting that representatives of the Thai insurgents have declared a ceasefire. Three alleged insurgents appeared on Thai TV and stated "We have come to an agreement to have a cease-fire from July 14 onward, We want to see peace and stability in the region." Don’t hold your breath. This is not the real deal. First, they claim to speak for a group that no one in Thai intelligence or the military has ever heard of, the United Southern Underground. Second, the self-described...(read more)...

NEFA Foundation: Iraqi Insurgents Quarrel Over Recognizing International Law
    2008-06-04 00:35:12
The NEFA Foundation has obtained and translated two new statements from an emerging Sunni insurgent faction calling itself “the Iraqi Martyrs Brigades.” In its initial statement of purpose, the IMB indicated that its fighters were being guided both by Muslim Shariah law and “contemporary laws… Our clerics have previously agreed that fighting the enemies who are attacking Muslim countries—by any means necessary—is a duty in and of itself. International contemporary...(read more)...

    Insurgents in the Bloodstream
    2008-02-23 14:34:00
Sgt. David Emery lost one leg in February 2007 when a suicide bomber assaulted the checkpoint near Haditha, Iraq, where he and fellow Marines stood guard. Military surgeons were forced to remove his remaining leg when it became infected with acinetobacter baumannii-a strain of highly resistant bacteria that since U.S. forces began fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan has threatened the lives, limbs, and organs of hundreds wounded in combat....

U.S. "Iraq Threat Finance Cell" Puncturing Insurgents' Financial Network
    2007-11-20 04:29:30
On November 2 , I posted on the degree of integration of a "threat finance" mindset into the Pentagon's intelligence and military operations, and discussed the Iraq Threat Finance Cell co-directed in Baghdad by DoD and the Treasury Department. Today's Washington Post reports on recent successes that U.S. force have had in targeting and shutting down the financial network of Al Qaeda in Iraq. An excerpt: Mosul is the central hub in Iraq for wiring money to the insurgency from Syria and other countries,...(read more)...

NEFA: Iraqi Insurgents Blame Online Antics by Al-Qaida Supporters for Harming "Obelisk" Network
    2007-10-15 07:02:21
Over the past year, prominent Internet chat forums which underpin the terrorist communications network known as "Obelisk" have increasingly become the stage for bitter infighting between Al-Qaida and other competing Islamic extremist groups, including the Palestinian Hamas movement, the Islamic Army in Iraq (IAI), the Mujahideen Army, the 1920 Revolution Brigades, "Iraqi Hamas" and--most recently--Asaeb al-Iraq al-Jihadiya. The back-and-forth bickering has grown so intense that, several months ago,...(read more)...

NEFA Foundation: 1920 Revolution Brigades Accuses Al-Qaida of Stoking Infighting Among Iraqi Insurgents
    2007-10-13 08:42:14
The 1920 Revolution Brigades -- a prominent Sunni militant group linked to the Iraqi Muslim Brotherhood -- has issued an irate response to recent criticisms by Abu Omar al-Baghdadi and other spokesmen for Al-Qaida's "Islamic State of Iraq." In its statement, the 1920 Brigades dismissed these claims as "an effort at settling a score or possibly even the product of a personal agenda." The 1920 Revolution Brigades also issued its own set of counter-allegations, accusing Al-Qaida in Iraq of engaging...(read more)...

U.S. may negotiate with Iraqi insurgents
    2007-05-23 22:34:35
WASHINGTON (CNN) — U.S. officials said Wednesday that a “joint campaign plan redesign team” is preparing a new diplomatic and military strategy for Iraq, which is expected to be approved by the end of the month. The team, led by Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker, is laying out a new course for how to proceed in the four-year-old war, the officials told CNN. There has got to be some other tactic tried, for certain the one being used now is not effective, and hasn’t been, if you’re going to go to war, by God, GO TO WAR, kill stuff, break things, lay waste to your enemies, don’t go in worried about world opinion and political correctness, KILL the enemy, WIN the war and then worry about the rebuilding and the infrastructure… One element of the plan is to try to identify groups of people — including possibly Sunni extremists and militia groups — with whom U.S. officials feel they can do business, such as ne...
