    Advice About Audio Interviews
    2008-07-08 16:35:00
(For writers, from a listener).I listen to a lot of audio interviews with authors. From The Agony Column to Adventures in Scifi Publishing to The Dragon Page (among many others), there is a plethora of great interviews out there. But there are also interviews that, while interest, are truly boring. The problem isn't so much what is being said, but how it's being said or how the author presents him or herself. And when you fail to interest the listener, you fail to get them to buy your books (or other work). So, having said that, and having spend the last few months digging through hundreds of podcast interviews, here are a few points of advice on how to prepare yourself for an audio interview:Speak w/ enthusiasmSounds obvious, doesn't it? Well, a lot of writers don't have this down. You have to make it clear how excited you are about your work. If you don't seem excited about your work, or just excited in generally, then what's to make us (the listeners) at all interested in yo

Questions To Ask During HR Interviews
    2008-06-03 22:58:38
Usually by the end of the interview the HR person would ask you whether you have any questions. Under the stress of the job interview sometimes nothing comes to mind, but here’s a list of useful questions to ask. Why do you enjoy working for this company? What attracted you to this organization? Can you describe the work environment here? How do you describe the philosophy of the company or organization? What do you consider to be the organization’s strengths and weaknesses? Can you tell me more about my day-to-day responsibilities? How soon are you looking to fill this position? How do my skills compare with those of the other candidates you have interviewed?I have really enjoyed meeting with you and your team, and I am very interested in the opportunity. I feel my skills and experience would be a good match for this position. What is the next step in your interview process? Before I leave, is there anything else you need to know concerning my ability to do this job?In your opinion, what

Questions To Ask HR Between The Interviews
    2008-06-03 22:56:30
How do you like me so far?Do you have any concerns about my ability to do the job and fit in?Is there anything standing in the way of us coming to an agreement?Do you have any concerns about my experience, education, skills? How do I compare with the other candidates you have interviewed?Describe your ideal candidate. What do my qualifications lack compared to those of the theoretical ideal candidate?I’m ready to make a decision based on the information I have. Is there anything else I can elaborate on so that you would have a better understanding of my qualifications and suitability for this position? Are there any areas in which you feel I fall short of your requirements? Can you give me any feedback that would make me more attractive to the company in the future or that I could benefit from next time?Is there anything else you need from me to have a complete picture of my qualifications? Is there anything personally or professionally that you believe would prevent my being a solid co

"We have to kill Tutsis wherever they are" - Guardian interviews the FNL's allies in Eastern DRC
    2008-05-20 08:07:00
From the GuardianChild soldiers can be found across Africa. Sometimes they are responsible for appalling atrocities; sometimes it is because their minds have been twisted by powerful drugs. But nowhere on the continent are they as driven by hate and ideology as among the Rwandan Hutu refugees in eastern Congo. Here, after more than a decade of invasion, civil war and slaughter - rooted in the genocide - a second generation of killers is being imbued with the mind-altering ideology of extermination and reared to hate and murder Tutsis. Some of the children learn it from fathers who were responsible for the mass killings the first time around, back in Rwanda. Others, like the boy, are raised by the extremist Hutu rebels who control large areas of eastern Congo and are among the most important causes of the conflict there that has claimed an estimated five million lives or more over the past decade and continues to kill about 45,000 people each month in Congo through the effects of war - p

    Shandel's Interviews
    2008-05-10 01:24:00
I'll be the first to admit I miss Omar Kelly's coverage of the Canes on the Sun-Sentinel. Ever since he was moved to the Dolphins beat and replaced by Shandel Richardson, I've felt that the quality of the coverage has dropped off substantially. Omar was closer to his readers and gave us good stuff. Shandel isn't bad, but he had some pretty big shoes to fill. On top of that, he has some stiff competition from the Herald's Manny Navarro, who often has the the latest news up really quick. However, Shandel has recently stepped it up big time. He knows what the deal is. All we care about down here is football. The baseball team is amazing and should be poised for a title, but nobody really cares. The basketball team was a few seconds away from a Sweet 16 appearance, but they too have to step aside for football. In the South, football is king. Anyway, Shandel has responded to this by providing one on one interviews with several incoming freshman recruits from Miami's heralded 2008 class. Here

SB Nation's John Morgan interviews Notre Dame DT Trevor Laws
    2008-04-22 17:15:57
Fellow SB Nation blogger and Seahawks Fan John Morgan has a fantastic interview over at Field Gulls with Notre Dame Defensive Tackle Trevor Laws.   As you all know, I've got a serious "draft crush" for Laws, I would not bat an eye if the Jaguars selected him at 26.  I think he's has a better motor than Kentwan Balmer, and I think he'd be a great fit on our defense. Anyhow, the interview is very well done.  An excerpt John Morgan: Tell me a bit how you prepare for an opponent. Do you watch a lot of tape or look at scouting reports? Any pregame rituals or habits?   Trevor Laws: Most games I have a pretty similar routine. Eat big the night before the game. Watch a few hours of film in the hotel. When I get up I make a big cup of coffee. I eat the same pregame meal every game. I have pancakes with peanut butter and honey on them. Then I go dominate. JM: Do you develop a feel for an opposing offensive lineman, pick up on their strengths/weaknesses in game? A

EGM interviews Hot Coffee modder after coolingFiled under: Culture, Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360 Turns out the April issue of EGM isn't a total joke, there's actually a nice follow-up with Patrick Wildenborg, the man who discovered and unlocked Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' Hot Coffee. GamePolitics relays the info and provides links to scans of the article. Wildenborg, a 38-year-old software engineer from the land of the Dutch, confesses that despite the upheaval his little mod caused in the industry and his life he hasn't seen any long-term benefits from the situation.Wildenborg is still proud of discovering the Hot Coffee code due to the research it took, but believes if it wasn't him, it would have been found by somebody else who knew what they were doing. He also doesn't blame Rockstar for its initial reaction of blaming modders for creating the code the company had actually left in the game, but thinks the company should have handled the situation differently from

Blogger Interviews: Stroud, Mitchell and Johnson are Bills
    2008-03-01 18:28:34
It's an exciting time to be a fan of the Buffalo Bills. Over the past two days, the Bills have been aggressive in significantly upgrading the front seven of their beleaguered defense. Yesterday, the team signed LB Kawika Mitchell of the Super Bowl champion New York Giants. Today, the splash was even bigger, as the Bills added two (starting?) defensive tackles in former Jaguar Marcus Stroud and former Viking Spencer Johnson. One of our favorite features to run is the good old blogger interview, and it just so happens that the three SB Nation bloggers who know these players best graciously stepped up to the plate to answer questions about the three newest Bills. In a trifecta of interviews, here's what SB Nation's finest had to say about the three newest Bills: USA Today River City Rage, Big Cat Country, on Marcus Stroud: First off, are you going to miss Marcus Stroud? Honestly, no. His 2007 campaign was a disappointment from top to bottom and it's u

    Sparano Interviews, Offered job?
    2008-01-05 21:38:00
We all knew Tony Sparano was being interviewed today and that he is likely the frontrunner for the head coaching position for the Miami Dolphins. However, The New Haven Register reported that not only was Sparano offered the job at the conclusion of the interview, but has accepted it and plans to take over after the Cowboys' season is over. The Herald reports that this latest development is false, and that the Dolphins remain interested in interviewing several other candidates later this week. While this may be true, it's pretty obvious that the other interviews are for show or simply to uphold the Rooney Rule. Sparano is in the lead and it would be a shocker if he didn't become the next Dolphins head coach. If he does, that completes the Dallas triumvirate. Parcells, Ireland, and Sparano will attempt to recapture the magic they had in Big D and revive the Miami Dolphins franchise. The sooner, the better, I think. Coaching staffs are not my priority. I want good players. The sooner th

How to face Campus Recruitment Interviews ?
    2007-12-31 05:57:00
    1. For how long will a typical interview last? Placement interviews last anywhere from 5-6 minutes to 30-40 minutes. However, you should not come to any conclusion about your chances based on the duration of the interview. A short interview is not necessarily bad. A long interview is not necessarily good.2. What are the types of recruitment interviews? While some companies conduct separate HR and Technical interviews (these could be individual elimination rounds or the candidate may be put through both the interviews) some companies combine both Tech and HR modes under a single interview.3. What is the size and composition of the interview panel? The size of the interview panel normally varies from one to three. With the top I.T companies drastically scaling up their intake, recruitment teams are under time pressure. Hence single panels are becoming increasingly popular. Recruitment teams comprise senior or middle management personnel from both HR and Technical functions in the company.4. Should I carry all my certificates with me to the interview?Carry all the original certificates (starting from 10th standard) with you when you go for an interview. Please also carry one set of attested photocopies of all the certificates (which you can give to the interview panel in case they ask for it).You should also carry any certificates that you may have pertaining to your extra-curricular activities (indicating awards won, participation in various events/games/sports).5. What is the appropriate dress code for an interview? An interview is a formal occasion and you are expected to attend the same in formal wear. Casual wear like jeans, sneakers, etc. are ruled out. If you are a male, you should tuck your shirt in, use a tie and wear formal shoes. Shave on the morning of the interview – do not go for the interview with stubble. If you are a female, you can wear a dress or a saree or skirt and shirt. If you have long hair, neatly plait it or tend to it in a manner that it does

    Type of interviews
    2007-10-25 15:45:56
Dear Readers,I would like to invite you to share your fears and your experiences vis-à-vis the oral examinations that you have passed or are preeparing for.An important point that needs to be clarified is the difference between a job interview and an oral examination.A job interview will try to align the specificities of a job to the competencies of a successful laureat, whereas an oral examination will try to see the possible fit of a candidate to tha administrative culture of the EU institutions.Preparation for the two different interview types should be focus at different issues. Please note that oral examination type of interview is more common to open competitions, whereas the job interview type of interview is more common to the Contractual Agents competitions (aka CAST).Happy to discuss your views.

    Tim Ferriss Interviews AJ Jacobs
    2007-10-11 22:15:05
Best selling author Tim Ferriss recently interviewed AJ Jacobs, agnostic Jew, serial experimenter and author of the book "The Year of Living Biblically." The book was about Jacobs’ attempt to live by the Bible and follow every single rule in it, for one whole year. And that meant dressing in white clothes, growing an untrimmed beard, wearing sandals and having a walking stick (similar to that of Moses’ in the Ten Commandments movie, I suppose). Oh, plus avoiding his "impure" wife during that time of the month. One part humorous, one part thought-provoking, the interview is an interesting read. Snip from the site: Some call this ‘cafeteria religion,’ and it’s meant as a disparaging phrase. But I say: There is nothing wrong with cafeterias! I’ve had some great meals at cafeterias. I’ve also had some turkey tetrazzini that made me dry heave. The key is to chose the right dishes – the ones about compassion and tolerance, and leave the ones about hatred and intolerance on the side. So in my year, there was this amazing balance between choosing your religion, which then leads to fewer decisions on a daily basis. And finally, I’d call myself a reformed individualist. I still see the value of individualism, but I’ve taken it down a few notches. As one of my spiritual advisers told me, you can look at life in one of two ways: As a series of rights and entitlements, or as a series of responsibilities. The biblical way is to look at it as a series of responsibilities – to your family and to your society. It’s like the JFK quote – “ask not what your country (or world) can do for you, ask what you can do for your country (or world).” Link to the interview. Great Stuff. © 2007 JazJaz.net. City TV News' "WebNation" Interviews Dylan Avery
    2007-09-25 12:50:00
Thanks to 911blogger for the heads up on this one:Canadian television station City TV in Toronto hosts a show called WebNation with smoking hot host Amber MacArthur. On September 13, 2007, Amber interviewed Dylan Avery. If you don't want to watch the entire episode, you can skip to about the 9:30 mark, where coverage of Loose Change begins. Dylan does mention a few details about the final cut. I must say, despite my wariness of Loose Change in the past, that it sounds like Dylan has matured and the final cut will be a marked improvement over version 2. http://www.citynews.ca/blogs/webnation.aspx Here is Amber's video blog: http://commandn.typepad.com/commandn/ Maybe drop her a line of thanks for covering 9/11 Truth (but please don't drool): http://ambermac.typepad.com/Technorati Tags:911, September 11th 2001, 911 Truth, 911 Eyewitness, 911 ommissions, 911 demolition, United 93, Current Affairs, Terrorism, 911 truth movement, Illuminati, New World Order, 911 commission, 911 commission report, 9/11 truth canada, tyranny, Bush, Freedom, Cover Up, america, canada, World Trade Center, WTC, 911 Proof, Government

    Spinner Interviews Johnny Rotten
    2007-09-10 08:17:26
Once an anarchist ... John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, may now be 51 and 30 years removed from leading the Sex Pistols' cries for anarchy. But as Spinner found out recently when we had the pleasure of meeting up with Lydon in a room at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, the principles of his youth are still very much intact. Whether talking about the music business (he's not a fan), presidential politics (he weighs in on the leading candidates) or higher education (he's a strong proponent), Lydon let loose a barrage of opinions that, whatever your beliefs, should entertain. How does being a judge for the Bodog Battle of the Bands live series with all those young artists inspire you?Oh, I find it thrilling. It's enjoyable in the extreme. Some of them are not great. Others are really quite startling, but not every time. But it's live music and it's their own songs, wonderful: These are two things that the music business is ignoring and actually trying to stop. I don't see any record comp

    Dust-Ups Punctuate Blitzer Interviews
    2007-07-22 19:18:05
NEW YORK (AP) - Wolf Blitzer’s in the news again. CNN’s colorful, attack-dog journalist was involved in another on-air confrontation, this time with “Sicko” filmmaker Michael Moore. Wait a minute. THAT Wolf Blitzer? The only thing colorful about the methodical, old-school reporter is his first name. Yet with Moore, Vice President Cheney and Lynne Cheney, that makes three memorable skirmishes during Blitzer interviews in nine months. It’s less a reflection on the 59-year-old CNN host than on the growing occupational hazard for people like him: the interview subject who’s ready to pick a fight. Moore was seething before Blitzer even asked anything on the July 9 appearance. CNN had preceded the interview with a taped report by Dr. Sanjay Gupta alleging Moore had fudged some facts in “Sicko.” Moore disagreed, and felt sandbagged. Full Story Here: Dust-Ups Punctuate Blitzer Interviews OK, I understand Blitzer and CNN attacking the President an

    Media Interviews: More Tips
    2006-10-08 06:03:00
Only comment within the range of your knowledge and expertise. If a question takes you beyond your knowledge or specialist area, say so:“I can only talk about what I know. A salinity expert is the person you want to speak to about that.”“I have no knowledge about that specific case. It would be unfair to comment without examining the facts, wouldn’t it?”If you don’t know, say you don’t know and promise to find out:“I don’t know the answer to that question. But I can find out and get back to you.”If you don’t have a figure or detail at hand, say you will have to get back to the reporter on that.Assume that your own facts and figures are the only reliable ones. Facts and figures mention by a reporter or interviewer may be incorrect or incorrectly interpreted. Only comment on statistics and detail that you know are true:“Look I’m not at all sure those figures are correct. I would need to check their accuracy before I could talk about them.”“I’d need to know the sample size, and look at the framing of the questions before I gave any credence to that survey. Questions can be so easily doctored, can’t they?”Surveys commissioned by groups partial to a particular viewpoint should be treated with extreme caution. Opinion pollsters know that subtle changes of the wording of a question can produce dramatically different results.Ensure that the words that come out of your mouth are your own. A common ploy of interviewers and reporters is to include their own opinions in a question. Go on high alert when you hear phrases like the following precede a question:“Don’t you think….”“So…”“So what you’re saying is….”“Are you saying….”“Isn’t that….”“Isn’t it really….”“Surely….”“Can’t it….”Do not mirror the interviewers words back to them:Instead of: “No I don’t think it’s a case of bureaucratic ineptitude”Rephrase positively “We have to establish the facts first before we spend yo

    Media Interviews: Tips Series
    2006-10-01 20:57:00
Media exposure is a double-edged sword. It can allow you to cut through the layers of distance and make a direct connection with your target public. But, in media interviews if you dont pay careful attention to what you say and how you say it that sword may become the thing upon which you fall.REMEMBER YOUR STAKEHOLDERSWhile you may be talking with a reporter or interviewer, you are ultimately speaking to a readership or audience. frame your answers from the perspective of your main stake-holders:“If this legislation goes ahead, you wont be able to drive on our country roads without the very real hazard of road trains anywhere in the state. Your personal safety will be at risk”“This new process will mean that you can harvest your crop and not worry about pesticide residues getting into the food chain.”;'BE CLEAR AND DIRECTBegin each response to a question with your most important point (theme) to ensure the point will be clear and direct.“Safety, reliability, and a quick response are the key factors in our new plan .”……(lead on to supporting statements) “Bureaucracies are the hardened arteries of Government. Private competition ups the ante and gets everyone working better” “There is a growing strength in women, but it’s in the forehead, not the forearm.”SPEAK IN SOUND BITESBe able to articulate each of your lead points in less than fifteen words. leading with short, encapsulating points is extremely useful for news “sound bites”.short lead points in radio interviews quickly define your arguments and link into the Primacy/Recency rule. Some of what you say may end up on the cutting room floor. Design your lead responses to compel editors to include themUSE TACTICLY THE REPORTER'S OR INTERVIEWERS NAMERefer to an interviewer by name a couple of times during an interview – don’t overdo it.In print interviews, refer to the journalist by name as you usually would in ordinary conversationBALANCE HOW YOU SAY WITH WHAT YOU SAYHow you say

    City Newspaper Interviews Brother Wease
    2004-04-01 21:04:00
People who live and grew up in Rochester, NY know that Brother Wease is a morning talkshow host on WCMF. With all the hullabaloo raised by the FCC about profanity and whatnot on the radio/tv, City Newspaper did an interview with the local shock jock. My favorite part of the story is this: Brother Wease: But listen: If [City Newspaper senior writer] Jack Spula had a radio show, truck drivers aren't going to listen to him. Because he's a fucking geek and he's boring. I'm not saying this in a bad way. I'm saying it as a fact. And it's a proven fact. That's why liberals couldn't have radio shows before, and that's why the right wing makes fun of the liberals. Mario Cuomo is boring. Is he smart? Absolutely. Does he have the truth? To me, absolutely. But he can't reach the truck driver. The right wing is reaching the truck driver. So when the people from City Newspaper discount Brother Wease because I'm dirty, then they're fucking losing the fight, and it infuriat
