It is definitely one of my ‘go-to’ plants for tough conditions. It seems to be able to grow in very moist soil and if you need it to in fairly dry soil (water during establishment). The foliage is nice and often turns a reddish color in the fall.This Iris was blooming in the border of one of the gardens I visited yesterday. I inherited it so I don’t know the cultivar. Since they hybridize freely there are many colors and heights to choose from. Siberian Iris is at home alongside a pond or in the border. It doesn’t ask for much care, I don’t think I have ever had anything attack it before, and is just about always reliable. One thing I found out is that it will grow in part-shade but doesn’t flower as well and the foliage gets a little wispy. From what I’ve gathered from one of my online friends, Gravy, Iris Ranola, who has been under Edgar Boyet Asonto (Coach of the Philippine Billiards Team) for a number of years, played very well and won in New Jersey! According to my online buddy, the ladies just fell apart this weekend playing the Filipino pool player! And on a personal note, Gravy says that Iris Ranola seems like a very likable person. “Geometric lines are de rigueur for the Iris design, especially in the bed frame” this is how they describe this Iris Bed. But I can’t find much geometric in this bed, I wonder how they look at it. Anyway, this bed has a flexible headboard supported by the three metal elements applied to the base. The clean-cut lines of the brushed metal feet link up harmoniously with the bed frame. It is not a particularly attractive flower but looks okay viewed close up. The top is kind of a dusty pink, which doesn’t work that well with the other colors. I do have a lot of Iris flowers this year and I hope the large number of Japanese Iris planted in the garden follow the lead of the Bearded, Siberian and Species Iris that have all bloomed well this season. Uh-oh. On a lighter note, a Weeping Blue Spruce (Picea pungens ‘Glauca Pendula’) bud shot with a very shallow depth of field. I like trying to work with a shallow DOF but it may not be for everyone. It is good planting weather as the rain is coming down hard but not too hard. It has time to soak into the ground. In between the heavier showers a light mist is falling. I have been there about a hundred times before but I always see a couple of new things. I am talking trees and established plantings so I don’t know how I missed them but I saw a couple of things I hadn’t noticed. I hadn’t really seen their Iris blooming before. There weren’t a lot of cultivars but what they did have was interesting and unusual. I didn’t spend a lot of time taking pictures of them because I find it a difficult flower to photograph. The rest of the gardens had really taken off since the last time I had been there in April. I will probably post a few more pictures of my trip during this week. I have 58 hours of work planned for this week and it shouldn’t be a problem if the weather cooperates. I am working today even though it is a holiday here in the United States. They differ from the larger Iris by being generally bulbous and not rhizomatous. However, I. bucharica is an exception, it uses a corm-like structure with fleshy roots. It is cute yet refined Iris that also has distinctive foliage that really does look like corn. When I planted these I had read that they like a rocky hillside in their native Central Asia. I planted them in a rocky, sandy fairly inhospitable place. I knew I was taking a chance with an expensive plant (about $2 per corm) but it worked out fine. They really haven’t spread much actually I think I have lost some of the original but they are always there in the early spring, with enough flowers to make it worthwhile. The long-lived flowers are wonderfully fragrant and a cheery color. This Iris grows well in the rock garden and can be used in containers. They are Hardy to USDA Zone 4 and possibly 3.
