As the Turks and Caicos Islands Turn
    2008-08-20 13:20:00
Yesterday Essence.com released previously unpublished photos of injures LisaRaye McCoy-Misick sustained on Providenciales, including bruises and bite marks said to be left by her soon to be ex-husband Premier Michael Misick (note that Premier Misick was also treated for injuries sustained at this fight). Last week a women's group on Providenciales issued a press statement and video denouncing the former First Lady, claiming that she never did anything for the people of Turks and Caicos. It was a picture perfect wedding and a lovely two years, marred by a few allegations of infidelity but around here that's typical. But I sense that the people of this small adopted Caribbean country of mine briefly forgot that when an American actress is involved the world will become involved. Every video, every photo, every comment, every statement is being analyzed by millions of people.Interesting timing, though. Everyone seems to have forgotten that the Premier is being investigated for corrupti...

    Custom Kitchen Islands
    2008-06-10 18:52:00
Just about every kitchen island is custom (unless you're using a movable island that you can buy off the shelf), in the sense that it is unlike any other, and is made to fit your space and needs. Custom kitchen islands cover a range from the completely custom-made and custom-finished island to match your custom cabinets, to a much more economical island made out of standard size cabinets and countertops assembled in creative ways. How to Customize Your IslandYou can use any arrangement of wall and/or base cabinets which fits your space, to form the base of your kitchen island. Then you can customize it in many ways:ShapeChange levels on part of the island, up to bar height or down to table heightMake the island an unusual shape. Who says everything has to be rectangular? Try angles and curves: mock up the shape with cardboard and tape to see how it looks and how it works.MaterialsCombine more than one counter-top material: perhaps a butcher-block prep area with a marble slab for pastryC...

Canary Islands - Hot For Summer 2008
    2008-05-29 23:49:00
By: John Palmer-7925The data is in, and many European and UK holiday makers aren't surprised...according to research done by a major travel company, the Canary Islands top the charts as a favourite winter holiday destination. In particular, the two islands of Tenerife and Lanzarote draw a lion's share of the tourist crowd, and the tourist Euros. This is despite the fact that tourist numbers were down somewhat in 2007 from the previous year. Speculation as to the reason for the slump in tourism in 2007 ranges in opinion. However, with the drop amounting to a mere 2 per cent, tourism officials are confident that 2008 holds greater promise. The tourism industry, and hotel and tour operators in particular, are gearing up for a busy year. This confidence is reflected by companies like Spanair that plan to increase flights into the islands this spring.Perhaps this is why the month of January saw so many travel deals being snapped up. Flight costs were slashed and tour packages vamped up to at...

    Cruising the Greek Islands
    2008-04-29 02:48:00
Islands are fewer and further apart in the northern Aegean. If you want to pack more isles into a week at sea, consider Hebridean Spirit's Legacies of the Cyclades itinerary. This one starts and finishes in Rhodes, hopping through the Dodecanese and Cyclades islands by way of Halki, Folegandros, Syros, Mykonos, Amorgós and Nisyros. Plenty of variety here: Rhodes Old Town is one of the most stunning medieval survivals in Europe. Ermoupoli on Syros is an odd time-warp port – it was once the most important entrepôt in Greece, and it conceals the faded grandeur of its 19th-century neo-Classical heyday behind the clutter of a working seaport.I have been keeping quiet about Folegandros and Amorgós for many years, but the cat has crept out of the bag – these are two of the loveliest and least-visited of the Cyclades, and their whitewashed villages put more commercialised islands to shame. ...

    Krabi Islands Hopping and Cruising
    2008-01-04 10:24:00
Activities and things to do:If you’re planning a day out at sea, the traditional wooden longtail boats found on all mainland beaches are your best option for independent island hopping. There are also frequent 'taxi boats' running from Ao Nang to Ton Sai and Railay Beach. These wait until they have enough passengers (in theory 5, but in high season they usually hold out for 10 or more) to depart. Buy coupons for the boats at the booth on the corner of the beach road opposite Phra Nang Inn.Prices for trips are fixed by the boatmen's club (i.e. are not able to be bargained down) and displayed on a board outside the ticket office. The prices are the same all year round and children under 12 travel free.Boats can also be found at Nopparat Thara; Chao Fah pier in Krabi Town; Klong Muang; and Railay. Prices may vary slightly from those in Ao Nang, depending on how much closer or further away from the destination you are. In these destinations you pay the driver directly (no tickets). The Four Islands: Ko Poda, Ko Gai, Ko Tub and Phra Nang BayThe 'Four Islands' - a popular trip from Ao Nang, this day tour takes in Ko Poda, Ko Gai (Chicken Island) and Ko Tub, with its sweeping sandbar, plus the beautiful Phra Nang Bay on Railay peninsula. This beach, inaccessible by road, is considered to be one of the most beautiful strips of sand in the world. There's also stops at excellent snorkeling sites near Ko Yawasam and Ko See, rocky outcrops with abundant coral reefs and marine life. The Hong Islands - Part of the marine National Park, these superb islands can be reached within twenty minutes from Ao Nang by speedboat, or 45 mins by longtail. Set against the spectacular backdrop of Phang Nga Bay, with its countless rocky outcrops, the islands in the Ko Hong group are rightly considered to be among the most beautiful in Krabi province. The main island is home to a hidden lagoon and is uninhabited, except for the birds, monkeys and giant monitor lizards that are often spotted o...

There's much more to Greece than islands
    2007-10-29 11:42:00
Athens, a big ugly city, has obligatory ancient sights (the hilltop temple of the Acropolis, and the ruined forum of the Agora); an extremely touristy old quarter (the Plaka); and fine museums — the best in the country. Its four million people sprawl where no tourist ventures, including new immigrant zones with poor yet thriving communities. The joy of Greece is outside of Athens. See it and scram.Delphi is a touristy little mountain resort with a breathtaking, mountainous setting. It's a long way to drive (three hours from Athens) for some ancient ruins. But learning about the oracle (whom the ancients consulted for advice) and being there in the empty cool of the early evening, you know why, in ancient times, this was considered the center of the world. ...

Obelisk International says latest figures show that year-on-year price growth has been seven percent up to quarter 1 of 2007, with prices for apartments in Athens registering a 12 percent rise in the first quarter of 2006. Big dry hits Greek islands
    2007-08-04 23:51:00

As with all the islands in the group, Kauai has all the beaches that you’d expect with water sports, snorkeling (in beautifully clear waters) and, of course, the scenery. National parks abound and near Poipu you’ll find the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Along with the other islands you’ll find lava formations and Spouting Horn is worth a visit to se...
