| Rare Iraqi Jewish books 'surface in Israel' | | 2008-06-28 05:15:00 | | Breitbart - Some 300 rare and valuable books confiscated from Iraq's Jewish community by Saddam Hussein's regime have been secretly spirited into Israel, an Israeli newspaper reported on Friday.
The books include a 1487 commentary on the biblical Book of Job and another volume of biblical prophets printed in Venice in 1617, the Haaretz daily said.
The volumes are part of a massive collection of books confiscated by the secret police of the executed Iraqi dictator and stored in security installations in the Iraqi capital until the US-led invasion of 2003. | | By: THE NEW BABYLON TIMES
| | Sarkozy In Israel: Not An Assassination Attempt | | 2008-06-24 11:33:00 | | Tel Aviv - French President Nicolas Sarkozy ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT! Well no, not really. But judging by the early reports on CNN and the like this morning, I'm betting a lot of people "might have thought" that. (I guess the "C" in CNN doesn't stand for credibility.) As usual, I'm glad I waited a couple hours until more details were made available.
Now if we could just get the Liberal Media Establishment to do the same.
So here are the basic details available;
As it looks so far, the incident was isolated and involved only one Israeli Police Officer. The Officer looks to either have committed suicide, or possibly had an accidental discharge of his firearm which struck him in the head. Subsequently, the injury ended the Officer's life. Either way, it has/had no direct bearing on Sarkozy's presence in Israel. Sarkozy's trip to Israel, was to improve relations between France and Israel. Israeli Police advised that they are further investigating the incident.

| | Consider consequences of Iran attack by Israel | | 2008-06-20 23:06:00 | | First, even before Iran may try to retaliate to this action by trying to block the flow of oil from the Gulf, oil prices would spike above $200 dollar a barrel.Second, Iran could react militarily to such Israeli action (that would be taken with the tacit support and the military logistic support of the US) by unleashing its supporters in Iraq against the US military forces there. That would trigger a military reaction by the US that would start a sustained air-led bombing campaign against Iran’s military capabilities (air force, anti-aircraft defenses, radar and other military installations, etc.)Third, Iran would unleash its supporters in Lebanon and Gaza (Hezbollah and Hamas) in a military confrontation with Israel. A broader war will follow in the Middle East.Fourth, Iran would use both the threat of blocking the flow of oil out of the Gulf and an actual sharp reduction of its exports of oil (an embargo) to spike the price of oil. | | Israel and Hamas ceasefire begins | | 2008-06-18 23:26:40 | | A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has begun, despite a last minute flurry of cross-border attacks.Under the terms of the truce, Israel will ease its blockade on Gaza and talks to release an Israeli soldier held by Hamas are expected to resume.Israeli PM, Ehud Olmert, has warned that the truce, which started at 0600 (0300 GMT), will be fragile. At least 40 rockets and mortars were fired from Gaza at Israel on Wednesday and Israel carried out air strikes.Another militant group, Islamic Jihad, who lost several members to Israeli air strikes in recent days, claimed responsibility for some of the attacks.Key questionsJust an hour before the truce came into effect, an Israeli missile strike killed one Palestinian gunman and wounded another three near Gaza's border fence. The key questions, says the BBC's Aleem Maqbool in Gaza, are: * Will Hamas be able to keep control over all of the disparate militant groups that fire rocket over the border? * Will those groups be able to sho | | By: A Pakistan News | | |
| | | | Israel-Iran tension drives up Oil prices to all time high | | 2008-06-06 13:58:00 | | An Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear sites looks "unavoidable" given the apparent failure of sanctions to deny Tehran technology with bomb-making potential, one of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's deputies said on Friday."If Iran continues with its program for developing nuclear weapons, we will attack it. The sanctions are ineffective," Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz told the mass-circulation Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper."Attacking Iran, in order to stop its nuclear plans, will be unavoidable," said the former army chief who has also been defense minister. It was the most explicit threat yet against Iran from a member of Olmert's government, which, like the Bush administration, has preferred to hint at force as a last resort should U.N. Security Council sanctions be deemed a dead end. This along with weaking US dollar, prompted a sudden spike in oil prices to USD 138 per barrel.U.S. crude oil prices rose more than $9 a barrel to a record $137.70 a barrel, the biggest gain in dollar terms in t | | By: Indian stock markets | | |

Israel's deportation of Lebanese-born Nasim Nisr could spur the release of more prisoners. Some observers believe Nasim Nisr's release is prelude to a possible prisoner exchange as Israel has sought to retrieve two abducted soldiers who may have been in Lebanon for almost two years.Hezbollah, which held a boisterous welcome rally for Nisr, says he is not affiliated with the group but rather is a "Lebanese patriot."In exchange for Nisr, Hezbollah handed over a brown coffin containing the remains of Israeli soldiers killed during its 2006 war with Israel. | | The market for expensive real estate in Israel is still strong | | 2008-05-20 14:19:00 | | Neither the one or the other. A REIT fund invests in real estate that yields an income; they are rented out, and that is the profit of the investor. A VC fund invests in technology, and it is high-risk. We use the money put in by our investors to build residential real estate projects, or even non-residential real estate projects, which are then sold. We do not invest in rent-yielding property, and we are not a high-risk investment like a VC fund. We have two funds, for which we raised $100 million. Since we can get bank credits for 80 percent of the cost of our projects, it means that we have more than $900m. at our disposal. We are now in the process of raising a third fund.Fifty percent of our investors in the FAIRE 1 Fund were Israelis. In the second fund, only 25% were Israelis and the other 75% were from the USA, the UK, Canada, South Africa, Belgium, etc.

For those unacquainted with Project Better Place, the Silicon Valley start-up headed by tech guru Shai Agassi has teamed up with Renault-Nissan to build and deploy fully electric Meganes in the seaside Middle Eastern country. The batteries that will power the vehicles are built by a joint-venture between Nissan and NEC, have a 125-mile range and will be supported by half a million charging stations and hundreds of battery-swap stations. Those specs should be enough to satisfy drivers in a country barely 60 miles between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, and 260 miles from the Red Sea to its border with Lebanon. | | Al Qaida leader slammed Palestinian negotiations with Israel | | 2008-03-20 17:18:00 | | In the audio excerpts broadcast by the Doha, Qatar-based station, bin Laden said that Palestine "cannot be retaken by negotiations and dialogue, but with fire and iron".Bin Laden also called on Palestinians who are unable to fight in the "land of Al-Quds" -- a Muslim reference to Jerusalem -- to join the al Qaida fight and the holy war, or jihad, in Iraq."The nearest field of jihad today to support our people in Palestine is the Iraqi field," bin Laden said."We tell our brothers in Palestine who could not join the jihad in the land of Al-Quds, to get rid of illusions of political parties and groups which are mired in trickery of the blasphemous democracy and to take their positions among the ranks of the mujahideen in Iraq," he said.If proven to be authentic, the tape will be the second by the al Qaida leader publicised in as many days.Al-Jazeera TV did not say how it obtained the recording, which was broadcast with an old photograph of bin Laden in a white headscarf and traditional Ar | | By: Palestine News Feeds
| | Bin Laden Reiterates Al Qaeda Doctrine Tying Victory in Iraq to Victory Over Israel | | 2008-03-20 15:34:18 | | In my opinion, the most important point in the second tape in two days by Osama Bin Laden is his reiteration of long-held Al Qaeda doctrine that victory in Iraq is critical to the long-term success of the jihad throughout the Middle East, ending in victory over and the destruction of the State of Israel. Bin Laden issues a renewed call for jihadists to win in Iraq in order to support the Palestinian cause: "The nearest Jihad (holy war) battlefield to support our people in Palestine is the battlefield...(read more) | | By: An American Warning | | |

| | Israel Air Force may buy vertical-takeoff planes to dodge Hizballah-Hamas rockets | | 2008-03-18 05:32:00 | | Debka -- Israel’s southern and northern air bases have come within range of rockets from Hizballah in Lebanon and Hamas from the Gaza Strip, respectively, and possibly from the West Bank too. Air landings and takeoffs have therefore become hazardous. Israeli air bases and installations have been fortified against Palestinian rocket attack from the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. This information has been kept from the Israeli public as the Olmert government continues to avoid proactive options for knocking out the increasingly dangerous Hamas and Hizballah’s rocket capabilities - boosted by Iran, and remains fixed in defensive mode. This fixation is not lost on Iranian, Syrian, Hizballah and Hamas in charting their assault scenarios against Israel. | | By: THE NEW BABYLON TIMES | | |

| | | New Religious City in Israel: Modiin Illit | | 2008-03-15 08:17:00 | | Arutz Sheva -- Modiin Illit, popularly known as Kiryat Sefer, is now a city, having been granted approval by the Interior Minister and IDF Central Commander. The new city is virtually all-hareidi, along the lines of Beitar Illit and Elad. Located some 25 kilometers east of Tel Aviv, it straddles the Green Line border between pre- and post-'67 Israel, though most of it is well within the Samaria (Shomron) area. For this reason, its change in status required the consent of IDF Central Commander Gen. Gadi Shamni.Mayor Rabbi Yaakov Guterman said, "Our city is considered Israel's third-largest Torah center [after Jerusalem and Bnei Brak - ed.], and is a drawing card for Torah institutions. It has long functioned as a city, and now it has received an official stamp of approval... Its great merit lies in its Torah scholars and the Torah and Hassidut insitutions that grace its streets."Kiryat Sefer existed as a flourishing Jewish village during the Second Temple period, 2,000 years ago. | | Israel real estate stocks hit 2 year low as credit crisis reaches Tel Aviv | | 2008-03-14 23:09:00 | | The crisis has not ignored Tel Aviv. After chasing real estate stocks blindly in expectation that the party would never end, investors are now scared. The fall of developer Heftsiba last August, and the financial chaos in its wake, had its effect. True, in the real estate sector they never stopped trying to convince us that Heftsiba was a one-off, specific problem - mostly criminal and not economic. But it certainly should have set off a warning light. The Israel Real Estate 15 is now 46% below its record high of last May. Many of the index's firms are now trading at a value below its shareholder equity.

| | Has Israel Lost the Will to Live? | | 2008-03-14 15:05:00 | | I have written a great deal about the anti-Semitic psychopathology of the Palestinians. I have described their illness as self defeating and self-destructive. I have pointed out that every nation that has attempted to destroy the Jews has failed and been destroyed in turn. I have also written about the dangerous fecklessness of the Israeli government and the Israeli Left, which believes that, against all historical evidence, this time the Palestinians really are committed to Peace. The evidence to the contrary continues to accrete, yet Palestinian genocidal threats, and similar threats from their supporters in Iran, Hezbollah, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, et al, fall on deaf ears. This is all well documented and dispiriting.Yet recently an additional suspicion has been insinuating itself into my awareness. It is much more troubling and my initial reaction is to dismiss the notion; yet even the most disturbing ideas must be examined and considered if the worst is to be avoided...Via Gates of Vi | | By: THE NEW BABYLON TIMES | | |
| | | | US-Israeli developer brings golf to Israel's historic Mount Arbel | | 2008-03-11 17:17:00 | | It was when the bottom fell out of the US real estate market in the early 1990s, that Joseph Bernstein first got the idea to open a luxury golf course in Israel. It wasn't an overnight revelation, more of a gradual process of discovery. Bernstein, an Israeli who had immigrated to America as a child, had been involved in a number of large real estate developments in New York through his company, Americas Partners, including the $500 million development Americas Tower, the US headquarters of Bank Hapoalim and world headquarters of PriceWaterhouseCoopers. When the market tanked in 1991, he decided to forget about work for a while and take up golf. He spent the next year devoting himself to the sport. He traveled widely in pursuit of his new interest and one day found himself teeing off on Israel's only golf course at Caesarea.

| | Israel places Lebanese, Syrian, Gaza borders, its cities and highways on high terror alert | | 2008-03-10 15:10:00 | | Israeli intelligence has warned that in the interim Hamas and Jihad Islami would make every effort to ignite the Gaza front in order to unite the Arab rulers behind a dramatic Arab resolution in support of the Palestinian Islamists. This tactic would transfer the Gaza issue’s center of gravity from Cairo, which is brokering a Hamas-Israel ceasefire deal, to radical Damascus.Egged on by Syria and Iran, Hamas keeps on stalling this track and raising its demands.the coming Arab League summit will for the first time host an Iranian head of state. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will be seated beside Syrian president Bashar Assad as guest of honor to parade the Tehran-Damascus axis’ pre-eminent role in Arab Middle East affairs, with Iran setting the pace. | | Accepting Israel occupation on Palestine a cruel apathy | | 2008-03-08 04:52:00 | | Jamaat-e-Islami Amir, Qazi Hussain Ahmad has said that accepting the Israeli occupation on Palestine was a cruel apathy of the Muslim rulers. Addressing a protest demonstration outside the Faisal Mosque here, he strongly condemned the publication of sacrilege caricatures. Qazi Hussain Ahmad said that the Palestinian lives have been made miserable by unleashing horrendous oppressions on them—innocent children were being massacred. He said that one-fourth of the world constitutes of the Muslims rich in natural resources, but could not do anything. He said that the Muslims were not even conscious of the oppressions perpetrated in Palestine and Gaza. Slogans against Demark and demand for breaking diplomatic relations kept ranting the atmosphere on this occasion.

| | Israel real estate price boom may be over | | 2008-03-08 03:03:00 | | The israel real estate market entered 2008 with a certain amount of trepidation.Potential home buyers are apprehensive, fearing that real estate prices will continue to rise as they did in 2006 to 2007. And those who invested in real estate, in what for them were halcyon years, fear that prices may fall in the future. But before explaining what can be expected from the local real estate market in 2008 a few words on the past. From 1996 to 2004 or 2005 Israel experienced the longest, and in some ways sharpest, real estate depression in its history. Prices fell by 20 percent to 25% on average, while some categories, particularly expensive real estate, fell by up to 40%. This was something new in Israel.

| | Long-range rockets fired from Gaza are Iranian: Israel army | | 2008-03-04 06:53:00 | | A senior military intelligence official said that over 20 Katyusha-type rockets, also known as Grad, were fired against Israel since last Thursday. "We are talking about regular Iranian-made rockets," an official quoted the intelligence official as saying. The 122-millimetre rockets have a range of about 20 kilometres (12.5 miles) and carry a large payload which caused heavy damage to buildings in the southern coastal town of Ashkelon, which bore the brunt of the Grad rocket fire.Israel believes that over 100 such rockets were smuggled into the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip through its porous border with Egypt in recent months following the Hamas violent takeover of the territory. | | By: THE NEW BABYLON TIMES | | |

| | Israel aims to stamp out missile jihad by destroying Hamas rule of Gaza | | 2008-03-02 03:51:00 | | DEBKAfile’s military sources report the Israeli military command is now targeting Hamas rule of the Gaza Strip as ultimately the only effective way of halting the Palestinian missile offensive against civilian locations. It therefore proposes to systematically destroy Hamas institutions one by one until its rule of Gaza caves in.The IDF has now set itself the following targets:Every Palestinian military and security installation belonging to Hamas, as well as its Al Dawa social welfare branches used as meeting places and the money changers’ places of business.A series of ground operations on the same lines as the Sejayia raid will be launched to drive Hamas and its allied terrorist groups out of northern Gaza – the sites of most missile launches against Ashkelon and Sderot. Once this part of the territory is purged, Israeli military control can be exercised without reoccupation.DEBKAfile’s Palestinian sources report that Hamas leaders are well aware of the IDF’s revamped tact | | By: THE NEW BABYLON TIMES | | |

Real estate sources estimate that this was due among other things, to the fact that Ramet's liabilities exceed its assets. They also expect Shmeltzer to begin legal proceedings against Ramet.

| | | | Israel is less exotic but just as attractive | | 2008-02-25 02:46:00 | | 2007 was a record year from the aspect of mergers and acquisitions, and the volume of activity worldwide is unlikely to fall. As for mergers and acquisitions in Israel, until now Israeli companies that wanted to grow looked overseas, while on the other hand, foreign investors looking at the good macroeconomic data coming out of Israel saw opportunities. There are good businesses here, and growth rates are high despite everything, so Israel is attractive. There's a genuine reason for taking a look in Israel and so far the country has weathered the crisis well, a fact borne out by the substantial amounts that companies have managed to raise in recent years."On the other hand, Israel is now less exotic because of the credit crisis, since there are now more opportunities on other markets, which makes Israel more expensive.
