Does Japan Offer A Return Policy For Terrible Pitchers?
    2008-05-09 22:52:00
Bryan Hoch/MLB.Com:Kei Igawa was hit hard and often in his first start of the season, making an early exit as the Yankees dropped a 6-5 decision to the Tigers at Comerica Park on Friday in the opener of a seven-game road trip for New York. Recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start in place of demoted righty Ian Kennedy, the 28-year-old left-hander continued his struggles at the big league level, recording just two swinging strikes among the 64 pitches he threw over three-plus innings. First things first. Fire the scout that thought it would be a wonderful decision to bring Kei Igawa to New York instead of Matsuzaka.Second, now we all can clearly understand what was pissing Ian Kennedy off. I mean, I guess you really had no choice but to demote him but if I was being demoted so that freaking Kei Igawa could start in my place, I would have said a little bit more about how pissed I was than Kennedy did.Third, bring Kennedy back up, without question. Ouch. Just two swingin

Japan pays huge price for not going green, renewable and solar powered
    2008-05-05 03:13:00
Japan is one of the wealthiest and the most organized countries in the world, especially if we consider the size of its population at 128 million.Japan's transport system simply shines and incredibly outperforms any other country. Japan is truly a technological, knowledge and financial Super Power.Japan is a world leader in high technologies, but it has totally failed in the department of renewable energy sources, such as solar power, wind power, geothermal, ocean power, hydrogen etc.Japanese corporations are the biggest producers and exporters of wind farms, solar photovoltaic devices, such as solar cells, solar panels, solar shingles, solar heat collectors, but their own applications of renewable in Japan are far bellow world standards for similarly developed economies. Even their National Plan of introducing renewable energy sources is very far bellow European counterparts and shockingly surprising for such a technologically developed economy. It seems, that public sector in Japan is

Bank of Japan Holds Rates Unchanged as Expected, Promises Flexible Policy
    2008-04-30 08:21:31
As expected, the Bank of Japan held rates unchanged at 0.50% on Monday evening, citing a continuing weakening economic situation both locally and abroad, followed by promises to act flexibly versus uncertainties surrounding the Japanese economic outlook. Rising food and oil prices, along with the risk of a U.S. economic slowdown spilling into the global economy, were putting downward pressures on Japanese growth prospects. However, with interest rates already very low, the expected moderation in GDP would only be temporary, according to the statement released with the decision. The BOJ also cut its GDP target to 1.5% from 2.1%, adding that it expects core CPI to grow 1.1% rather than the previous 0.4% growth expected for 2008. The BOJ also said GDP and core CPI would average around 1.7% and 1.0% respectively in 2009. The Bank also said the path of monetary policy was difficult to determine given the large amount of uncertainty surrounding the economic situation in the region. In a press

Valkyria Chronicles released in Japan. New movies to drool on!
    2008-04-24 19:35:00
Selvaria Bles Inserito originariamente da Abriael Yesterday Valkyria Chronicles was released in Japan. While my Japanese friends are making me cringe in pain and envy by telling me how good the game looks and how fun it is (all the ones that gave me a first-hand report seem to love it, not surprisingly), Sega delivered some new movies as well, this way even us westerners will have to drool over them until the international release date this fall. The new movies include three character profiles for Zaka, Alicia (the main character) and the beautiful villainess Selvaria Bles, which is indeed one of the most interesting characters in the game (just click on the names to be linked to the respective video on gametrailers). True king of the package, though, is a full 700 megabytes movie titled "Gallia's Military Training 2", available only trough the official site (click on downloads, then promotional movies) and the Japanese Playstation Store, that illustrates in great depth the game

    The Soul of Japan, Bushido
    2008-04-20 02:29:00
If you are ever fascinated by Samurai or Ninja, you definitely should read this book, called “Bushido (武士道)”. This book is not only talking about Samurai but also about how Japanese interprets matters and how they act against it.Bushido is the book about “The Soul of Japan”. You could know the basis of Japanese soul a (Behavior, Loyalty, Duty, Education, Etiquette etc), and how special country Japanese is from this book. For example, when you give a present for someone, what do you say or do? Probably, you tell the person how nice the present is. However, Japanese people say “Tsumaranai Mono Desuga(つまらないものですが)” which means “Please accept my small gift” which might sound strange to some of you. Japanese people think that no gift is enough for the person who receives it. The gift is like a symbol of feeling toward the person. The writer of Bushido is Inazo Nitobe (新渡戸稲造) who was painted in Japanese 5000 yen bill before. He was born in 18

Kazumi Izaki, a 44-year-old mother of two, won approval on February 29, 2008, as Japan's oldest professional boxer of either gender, among 20 women who were awarded licenses from the Japan Boxing Commission. Kazumi Izaki, a fitness club instructor, has daughters aged 21 and 14. Kazumi herself is 45 years old!. She laced up her first pair of boxing gloves in 2001. Under the Japan Boxing Commission rules, applicants for a license must be under 32 but Izaki was allowed permission to fight because she previously won a Japanese title, albeit one not recognized by the country’s governing body. Hiroaki Yokota had held the distinction of being Japan’s oldest professional boxer but the 46-year-old declined to renew his license. Sharing her thoughts to reporters, “I try not to think about my age. I’m a mum but I’m going to give it everything I’ve got. I wanted to show my children that if you give up, then you’re washed up!” Wow! And I kid you not!"For the love of The Anitokid!

It was none other than 2006 World Pool Champion Ronnie Alcano, aka The Volcano, with another impressive run - 9-3! And I kid you not!The popular billiards player was supported by the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP

    Sox Whack Yankees...of Japan
    2008-03-23 13:02:00
The Red Sox won their second exhibition game in Japan today, defeating the Yomiuri Giants, 9-2 at the Tokyo Dome, as J.D. Drew hit his second home run in two days, a grand slam in the first inning. Tim Wakefield pitched five solid innings, allowing two runs against Japan's most famous baseball club. But the biggest moment of the game was when hometown hero Hideki Okajima came in to pitch in the seventh (pictured). The former Giant reliever received a thunderous ovation in pitching a scoreless inning.Jed Lowrie also added a solo homer, and Brandon Moss and Coco Crisp drove in runs to lead the Red Sox offense. Monday is an off day, and the Red Sox will play the Oakland A's on Tuesday night in Tokyo (early morning in the US) to open the 2008 MLB season.I'll be witnessing it at Professor Thom's along with some other early birds on Tuesday. And I hope you all have had a Happy Easter.

    BONZAI! The Japan Schedule...
    2008-03-21 04:53:00
While the Boston Red Sox sleep, or at least try to, I'm here on this Good Friday early morning writing to you. I wish every one of you a happy and healthy holiday weekend. Easter already. My goodness! Passover does not begin until April 20th, and the two holidays, which are usually close on the calender, are separated by almost a month. So the matzoh will have to wait. I like mine soaked in whipped eggs, almost as if the eggs were to be scrambled and sizzled. It's called Fried Matzoh, and with a little salt and fresh cracked pepper (some people use maple syrup, but that's too sweet for me), it's delicious. You can tell it's breakfast time here in Connecticut, and I'm a willing participant. I'm also the head cook and primary dishwasher. And I don't mind one bit.The Red Sox play their first two regular season games on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 25th and 26th. Both games commence at 6:05 AM EDT. They'll also play exhibition games against the Hanshin Tigers and the Yomiuri Giants on Satu

We've seen scans, but they were small. And the colours looked a bit off, didn't look very "steely". Here, then, are some proper shots of the "Steel" edition of the PS3, which will be available as part of the Japanese Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle. Looks...well, like gun-metal, really. Highly appropriate. Console's above, with a pic of the "Steel" DualShock 3[Via Kotaku]

Red Sox Japan Trip in Jeopardy
    2008-03-19 11:39:00
The Red Sox were scheduled to leave for Japan after today's game with the Blue Jays, but the word came out today that the players will boycott the trip and not get on the plane today (as well as not play the final game in Florida against Toronto) unless the coaches and training staff, who are also making the journey, are also compensated as the players are. Each player is getting $40,000 for the games over there, but apparently MLB reneged on an agreement back in November that the coaches would also get a stipend for it as well. It is my understanding that the two other times MLB teams made trips over to Japan (Mets-Cubs in 2000 and Yankees-Rays in 2004), the coaches and training staffs were compensated.Terry Francona found out about it yesterday, and the players likewise found out and held a vote and right now will not play today or get on a plane later today. I also heard that the Oakland A's, who will play the Sox in Tokyo, are watching what happens today in Ft. Myers and may also bo

Josh Beckett's Back Is A Little Better, But Japan Trip Is Doubtful At Best
    2008-03-12 05:14:00
The news out of Florida was a little better about Josh Baseball Beckett's back. He had a horrible day on Monday but Tuesday was an improvement. He is nowhere close to even be able to do any stretching excercises, much less throw the ball. But the Sox are being cautious, as they should be. Said Tito Francona (quote taken from the Boston Globe)..."I don't know that we would want to eliminate it (the trip to Japan) today because we don't have to," manager Terry Francona said. "The one thing we're not going to do is send him over there to pitch three innings and hurt his back. Just like everything, it depends on how they're doing health-wise. He actually is having a pretty good day today."We just want him to be healthy for the long haul. Last year when he had that avulsion, we didn't run him out there when we probably could have because we didn't think it made sense. So in something like this, we'll do the same thing. We'll use good judgment. It's not always easy to use good judgment, but

Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 2/25-3/2Filed under: Another Week in Japan People interested in Japanese game sales probably have one question on their minds: Did Super Smash Bros. Brawl hold onto the top spot last week? Well, the answer is, no. The new Gundam game for the PS2 managed to end Brawl's reign, and end it convincingly. In fact, Smash barely stayed in second, with Wii Fit being right up the fighter's grill. The Wii itself also lost the top spot last week, overtaken by the PSP in hardware for the first time since Brawl's release. Aside from those major changes, though, everything looks to be what we'd expect, with Winning Eleven and Family Ski continuing to champion the cause for third parties.Go on and take a look at the numbers after the break ... or else.Hardware: PSP: 73,706 Wii: 64,535 Nintendo DS: 51,922 PlayStation 3: 13,520 PlayStation 2: 10,986 Xbox 360: 2,282 Software: Gundam Musou Special (PS2) --- 149,846 (Ne

Japan Capital Spending Falls 7.3%; GDP May Be Lowered
    2008-03-04 21:47:00
Japanese business investment fell at the fastest pace in five years last quarter, signaling the government will trim its economic growth estimate next week.Capital spending excluding software slid 7.3 percent in the three months ended Dec. 31 from a year earlier, the Ministry of Finance said today in Tokyo. The government will use today's report to revise its estimate of gross domestic product March 12. Preliminary fourth-quarter GDP grew an annualized 3.7 percent.Profits, eroded by a stronger yen and higher costs of oil and raw materials, fell the most since the economy was emerging from a recession more than five years ago, today's report showed. Slower growth may prompt the Bank of Japan to cut interest rates, already the lowest among major economies, this year.

Asian Stocks Fall for Fifth Day; Japan's Nippon Steel Drops
    2008-03-04 21:44:00
Asian stocks fell for a fifth day, as Japanese steelmakers dropped after the country's capital spending slumped for a third straight quarter and crude oil's retreat from a record sent oil companies lower.Nippon Steel Corp., the world's second-biggest steelmaker, dropped to the lowest since 2006 in Tokyo on concern the government will cut its estimate for Japan's economic growthSantos Ltd., Australia's No. 3 oil and gas explorer, led energy shares lower.``Lower capital spending forced investors to face the reality that the earnings outlook for businesses is worsening,'' said Naoki Fujiwara, chief fund manager at Shinkin Asset Management Co., which manages the equivalent of $5.1 billion. ``The atmosphere has become increasingly unpleasant.'' The MSCI Asia Pacific Index fell 0.3 percent to 141.79 as of 11:59 a.m. in Tokyo, extending a four-day, 4.9 percent decline. Japan's Virtual Console outlook for March: Joyful, LustrousFiled under: Virtual Console, ImportsNintendo has updated their Virtual Console page with the planned releases for March. The list contains 10 titles, meaning that we should expect two or three a week. Oh, well. There are some very cool releases this month, including a Japan-only Famicom fighting game from Nintendo (!) called Joy Mech Fight. Other high-profile games include the first Metroid, which will be the Famicom Disk System version and therefore feature even better music, and Fantasy Zone, the second promised Sega Master System games. We're personally excited about the inclusion of Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun, not because it's a good game, but because it's a Virtually Overlooked game. Amazon Japan sells 20GB PS3 for twice price of 40GB - SendMeRSS
    2008-03-03 11:37:18
Amazon Japan sells 20GB PS3 for twice price of 40GBFiled under: Sony PlayStation 3 The discontinuation of the PS2-playing 20 and 60 GB models of the PS3 have made them quite the hot item in Japan, so much so that Amazon Japan is currently selling 20 GB systems for ¥63,800 ($617), around ¥30,000 more than the 40GB system. 60 GB consoles are the priciest of all, currently selling for ¥74,800 ($723). Hobby shops there are also apparently jacking up buyback prices, according to this blog (beware of NSFW ads). Are we headed for a similar fate here in the states? No. Or at least, not immediately. With a mostly backwards compatible model already announced for June, it seems that that the folks who like to keep one foot in each generation aren't in danger of the chasm they straddle widening and swallowing them whole just yet.[Via CVG]Read -- JAPAN: older PS3 models price doubled! Japan Virtual Console: Joy Mecha Fight, Fantasy Zone - SendMeRSS
    2008-03-03 07:24:23
Japan Virtual Console: Joy Mecha Fight, Fantasy ZoneJapan, much like America, will just have to deal with another scaled-back month of Virtual Console releases in March. At least they know what they're in for, already. Next month's lineup will consist of mostly 8-bit classics, notably the latter-day Famicom fighting game Joy Mecha Fight (pictured right) and the shooter Fantasy Zone for Master System. Speaking of which, I actually went and downloaded the first Master System title, Fist of the North Star. It's terrible, of course; it's an awful beat-em-up where you just kick the same enemy over and over. It makes Kung Fu look like Final Fight. But at least the emulation is great. There's flicker! It's not blurry! Looks fine to me.More notable news from this month's list of Japan VC titles: The perpetually-delayed MSX games have been confirmed for a May release date. Hopefully they're not just kidding this time, too. Also, this month will not only feature no Nintendo
