Israel to build hundreds of homes in East Jerusalem
    2008-06-01 19:12:00
JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Israel has approved the construction of almost 900 new homes in East Jerusalem, a move that could hinder international efforts to secure a peace deal by year's end. Israel is under pressure to dismantle East Jerusalem outposts like this one in Maaleh Hazeitim, seen in April. The Palestinians hope to make East Jerusalem the capital of a future Palestinian state.A spokesman for Israeli Housing Minister Zeev Boim said his office will issue a tender this week for the construction of 884 houses, 121 of them in Har Homa. The rest will be in Pisgat Zeev. Both are neighborhoods annexed by Israel in 1967. The housing ministry said it timed the issuance of the permits to coincide with the 41st anniversary of the annexation.Israel and the Palestinians are in peace talks that include the future of Jewish settlements and East Jerusalem. In March, Israel announced plans to build 600 homes in East Jerusalem as part of the Jerusalem mayor's initia

Students urge Jerusalem's absentee homeowners to rent
    2008-04-29 02:25:00
While many Diaspora Jews consider their Israeli homes an important investment in the Jewish state, many locals say absentee homeowners have driven up market prices, drained the market of available rentals and made many Jerusalem neighborhoods unaffordable for Israelis. That's why a coalition of student activists has launched a campaign to persuade the absentee homeowners to open up their homes to Israeli renters."We think it's great that foreign Jews are buying here and investing in Jerusalem," said David Uziel, 29, a graduate student in urban planning at Hebrew University. "But if they keep their apartments empty, they are weakening Jerusalem."

Las iglesias excavadas del Jerusalem etíope
    2008-03-21 13:19:00

Properties in central Jerusalem neighborhoods - Talbieh, the German Colony and Rehavia - have nearly doubled in price in the last four years
    2008-03-20 17:27:00
Property deals in the second half of 2007 were closing at levels similar to the first half of 2007, as israel real estate price increases began slowing. The flow of overseas buyers has slowed greatly in recent months. The primary explanation for this slowdown is the economic crisis in the U.S. and the collapse of the dollar. Nevertheless, there is a feeling among prospective apartment buyers that Jerusalem property owners are asking too much for exclusive homes."There certainly is a slowdown," one agent says. "There is a feeling that while foreign residents behaved naively in the past and bought just about anything for any price, they are now wiser."

    Assessing the Jerusalem Attack
    2008-03-07 01:38:55
The attack on a religious school in Jerusalem yesterday was the first major terror attack in that city since April 2006. There are several aspects of the attack that are worth noting. First it is a reminder that Palestinian terrorists remain capable, perhaps at a much lower level than at the height of the al-Aqsa Intifada, but deadly capable nonetheless. Second, the attacks came at a crucial time and place. The location was the Mercaz Harav, a leading religious school associated with Israel’s...(read more)

    Jerusalem Real Estate
    2008-03-05 14:50:00
Welcome, prospective home buyers, to the Jerusalem suburb of Har Homa, where the clamour of construction is difficult to square either with the tide of world opinion, which insists that new building here should be halted, or with the outraged claims by some right-wing Israeli politicians that it already has been."There has never before been a situation like this in the history of Jerusalem where an Israeli government actively freezes building," opposition politician Uri Ariel stormed in The Jerusalem Post last month. He calls the situation "a national disgrace."Call it what you will, and never mind what Uri Ariel may believe, the construction of new housing is rattling ahead in Har Homa, a modern bedroom community of about 15,000 Jewish residents sandwiched between the Arab neighbourhood of Sur Bahir and the storied town of Bethlehem, where Palestinians dwell beyond a forbidding concrete wall.

Jerusalem: Step into the Holy Land
    2008-03-04 20:19:00
Israel, and particularily Jerusalem, has been a sacred site for 3 different religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, since the 7th century. Each having a holy site located a very short distance from one another. Making this a remarkable place to visit since it has been fought over so heavily, for so many years, and is still being fought over, today.I highly suggest visiting,* Qubbat Al-Sakhra, the third most holy site in Islam, next to Medina and Mecca. It’s believed that Mohammed after ascended to heaven on a winged horse that he returned to this very spot to tell his followers what Allah had spoke to him. From there you can go to the bottom of the Temple Mount and see the *Western Wall, the most sacred site in all Judaism. The wall itself was built by the Romans during their occupation from the ruins of a temple built by King Solomon.A stone’s throw away is the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, believed to be built on the cave where Jesus was laid to rest after his crucifiction, a

Attacks Widen: Netivot, Psagot and Jerusalem Under Fire
    2008-03-02 03:41:00
The city of Netivot, in the western Negev, as well as the southern Jerusalem neighborhood of Gilo came under fire Saturday night after midnight.A Grad-type Katyusha rocket was fired from Gaza, landing in the Negev town of Netivot before dawn Sunday morning. It landed near the grave of famed Morrocan Jewish Kabbalist Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira, the Baba Sali, in an open field.Hundreds of Jewish families living in the temporary village of Nitzan have begun hearing the “Color Red” warning system, which has been put into use in coastal towns near Ashkelon. However, residents of the village continue to live in caravans, and have no sheltered space to run to in case of missile or rocket attacks. “There is no protection in the area and no option to hide. We are exposed to fire and to danger with no possibility to seek protection anywhere,” a spokesman for the community said Saturday. A rocket that landed on a caravan last week destroyed the caravan completely, he added.

    Jerusalem Real-Estate Stories, Part 1
    2007-11-10 13:18:00
When I am in Israel, a large percentage of my stay goes into assessing the real-estate market and trends going on there. I decided to use at least a few articles to share with you some of the interesting stuff going on there.Since many of us do visit at least once a year, you may recognize some of these trends and say, “Yeah, I noticed that, too!” But for the rest, maybe you will hear something new or something nostalgic that will make Israel seem all that much closer to you here.

    The Latin kingdom of Jerusalem
    2007-10-04 19:33:00
The Latin kingdom of Jerusalem was thus proclaimed, with its first custodian Godfrey of Bouillon, who accepted the modest title of "Defender of the Holy Sepulchre" (Advocatus Sancti Sepulchri) . The chief duty of the "Advocatus" was to ensure the safety of the conquest, and this he did by defeating the first Egyptian army arriving from Cairo at Ascalon in the following month. The crusades statesApparently the winners of the day returned from that battlefield to Jerusalem laden with tremendous booty. Realizing the hopelessness of their plight, the Muslim amirs of the still unconquered coastal towns soon began to send Godfrey tributes in gold besants and presented him with horses loaded with provisions and fruits; and these peace overtures were accepted as stabilizing factors in the position of victors and vanquished who were destined to live together for many years to come.At last, Godfrey died on July 18, 1100, and was succeeded by Baldwin of Boulogne as first king-elect of the new lit

    Jerusalem
    2007-06-29 15:05:07
A predawn haze lit the kilometre of road before us. We trudged along it, still groggy from the half hearted slumber of our bus ride from Cairo. Through a small strip ‘of no man’s land’ we entered Israel, and left Egypt behind us. The immigration office was small, with gleaming white tiles on the floor [...]
