| Jetta TDI buyers to get $1,300 back from the IRS | | 2008-07-25 09:19:00 | | Now that Toyota has sold so many Priuses that the popular hybrid no longer qhalifies for federal tax credits, and they are essentially sold out until the new generation cars show up next year, people might be wondering where to go for a high mileage vehicle. Volkswagen's new 50-state legal Jetta TDI is going on sale around about Labor day and our good friends at the IRS have decreed that people who purchase one will be able to get a check back from the feds for $1,300. The clean diesel Jetta qualifies under the Advanced Lean Burn Technology Motor Vehicle income tax credit. That would bring the price premium for the diesel to only $700 over a comparable Jetta with a gas engine. The EPA has rated the Jetta at 29/40mpg city highway with a 6-speed DSG gearbox. Real world numbers are likely to be closer to the low 40s for most drivers, but we'll be finding out for ourselves soon. At the first drive of Mercedes new BlueTec diesels last month, company officials expressed hope that those vehic... | | By: Car News | | |
| | Volkswagen Launches Jetta in India | | 2008-07-18 05:16:30 | | Did you see their TV ad? Volkswagen is one of the best car brands there can be and usually their advertising is also very good. Don’t get me wrong… their ad is very good… all European country side… a luxury hotel etc etc. Just one thing wrong.. check the number plate on the car… yes [...]... | | By: Social Cause India | | |
| | Volkswagen prices 2009 Jetta TDI from $21,990 | | 2008-06-19 08:30:00 | | Volkswagen revealed today that $21,990 will be the base price for its highly anticipated 2009 Jetta TDI, while the Sportwagen model will start at $23,590. This is extremely aggressive pricing on the part of Volkswagen that places the Jetta TDI in direct competition with the Toyota Prius, as eco-minded shoppers will surely cross-shop the two.The TDI model will be the equivalent of the SE trim level for gas-powered Jettas. A 2009 Jetta SE 2.5L manual sedan starts at $19,990, which tells us that the high-tech, 50-state-compliant clean diesel engine is worth about a $2,000 premium. The Jetta TDI will, however, be available with either a manual or DSG transmission. The EPA recently rated the 2009 Jetta TDI at 30 mpg city and 41 mpg highway, which were disappointing numbers for Volkswagen. It has since hired an independent, third-party certifier, AMCI, to ascertain what it refers to as the Jetta's "true fuel economy". AMCI came back with a better rating (surprise!) of 38 mpg city and 44 mpg ... | | By: Car News | | |

| Mark Pombo wins the first ever Jetta TDI Cup race | | 2008-04-30 06:20:00 | | Several hours after yesterday's inaugural Jetta TDI Cup race, VW informed us that although Speed TV did record the entire race, it won't actually be on TV for a while. The cable network that seems to be almost all NASCAR all the time, will record all the races this year along with background on the program and drivers. At the end of the series they will broadcast a documentary covering the whole series. To avoid keeping you waiting until this fall, we've got the full standings of the race after the jump. Mark Pombo managed to keep his car out of any significant contact to move up from fourth on the grid to take victory at the end of the thirty-minute race. The equally prepared cars made for some fantastic racing on the picturesque VIRginia International Raceway. Groups of three, four and five cars at time went at it door handle to door handle. A few cars made off track excursions but only four of the 29 starters failed to finish. If you are in the vicinity of any of the remaining six ra... | | By: Car News | | |
| | Volkswagen 60MPG Jetta BlueTDI Diesel Coming | | 2008-04-28 06:08:00 | | Volkswagen has at last finished working on its 60 mpg Jetta BlueTDI diesel, and not only does it look great, but it's coming to America later this year. The company announced at this week's International Vienna Motor Symposium in Austria that the new diesel Jetta uses an updated version of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with common-rail direct injection that made its debut last fall in the European-market Tiguan.Dubbed BlueTDI, the engine produces 138 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. It's good for 60 mpg on the highway, a 12-percent improvement over the 2006 Jetta TDI.And thanks to some emissions tweaks - an engine-management system that mitigates toxic nitrogen oxide production by limiting combustion temperatures, and a maintenance-free trap that converts the remaining NOx to nitrogen and water - the Jetta BlueTDI meets the EPA's Bin 5/LEV 2 emissions standards. That means it's 50-state legal without the need for urea injection. Even Californians get one.The Jet... | | By: Autos Space | | |
| | First Drive: 2009 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen | | 2008-04-04 01:35:00 | | Thirty minutes ago I was hustling a car through the rolling, glass-smooth two-lanes of Virginia's horse country, my hands happily clasped to a thick, three-spoke steering wheel as I arced the front tires through kinks and bends and wriggles, my feet playing the three pedals as if I were summoning bass notes on a pipe organ, my right hand jumping to the five-speed manual lever to choose shifts up and down, suspension beneath me deftly deflecting road bumps while keeping all four corners locked down and obedient. I was having fun.I was not driving a Porsche, though. My grins appeared from the helm of a station wagon.Once a staple of American idiom, the term "station wagon" has in recent decades all but slipped into disuse, now found way back in the synonyms drawer alongside words like "dull," "archaic," and "I'd rather have a big ol' SUV." But as I wrote in a recent Motor Trend column, a lot of us still like station wagons -- and there's about wagons to like. After all, wagons are more n... | | By: Autoshows | | |

| | Volkswagen Jetta TSI Sport at Autosport Show (UK) | | 2008-01-10 12:56:00 | | Volkswagen’s latest track challenger, a supercharged and turbocharged Jetta saloon, was unveiled today (Thursday) in Britain. The Jetta TSI Sport made its debut at the Autosport International racing car show at Birmingham’s NEC, taking centre stage on the British Racing and Sports Car Club stand. The new machine will take to the track for the first time on Easter Monday (24 March) in the opening round of the Hankook-backed Volkswagen Racing Cup, at Oulton Park. In road-going form the Jetta’s 1.4-litre, 16-valve engine produces 170 PS but the engineers at Volkswagen Racing UK, with the help of their technology partners at Superchips, Milltek Sport and Turbo Dynamics, have boosted this to 230 PS. The TSI power unit was proven in competition last season under the bonnet of a Golf; Volkswagen Racing UK’s Melissa Wright believes that the Jetta TSI is a potential race winner: ‘We learned a lot about the engine during the course of 2007 and we have incorporated that knowledge into the new installation,’ she said. ‘In the right hands and with some development mileage under it, the new car will be a front-runner, I am sure.’ The TSI features an engine-driven supercharger and an exhaust gas powered turbocharger, arranged in series; the supercharger operates at lower engine speeds and the turbo cuts in as revs rise. The result is excellent driveability and performance throughout the rev range, with no turbo lag and high maximum torque. The power unit was named It’s not only in Britain that the Jetta will be cutting a dash this season – the Sports Car Club of America is to stage a championship for turbodiesel-powered machines. The Jetta TDI Cup will launch in May. In the UK, the Jetta TSI Sport will be raced by selected motoring and motor sport journalists. The Volkswagen Racing Cup expands to 14 rounds this year and will once again be the chief saloon-race support to the British Formula 3 and British GT Championships.
