    Leslie Stahl: Worst Journalist Ever?
    2008-03-30 19:18:36
On CBS tonight, Leslie Stahl just interviewed Al Gore on 60 minutes. This was the most obnoxious softball interview I have ever viewed in my entire life. She did not challenge Al Gore once, and she did absolutely NO research before this interview began. How can a journalist do no research before giving an interview? Think about the number of recent news stories regarding global warming. No... Click the Headline Link to Visit Copious Dissent and Read the Full Story.

An Interview With Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist and Author Fred Kaplan
    2008-02-18 18:34:29
The topic below was originally posted on my blog, the Intrepid Liberal Journal as well as The Wild Wild Left, the Independent Bloggers Alliance, The Peace Tree and Worldwide Sawdust. Most Americans are eager to turn the page on the Bush years. Yet even as we elect a new president we’re still coming to terms with an era that has both tarnished America’s reputation and diminished its influence.Fred Kaplan chronicles the folly of the Bush years in his new book, Daydream Believers: How a Few Grand Ideas Wrecked American Power (John Wiley & Sons).Kaplan writes that, “Nearly all of America’s blunders in war and peace these past few years stem from a single grand misconception: that the world changed after 9/11, when in fact it didn’t.Certainly, things about the world changed, not least Americans’ sudden awareness that they were vulnerable. But the way the world works – the nature of power, warfare, and politics among nations – remained essentially the same.”Kaplan also

French search journalist’s home over Qaeda article
    2007-12-10 07:18:00
French authorities have searched the home of a journalist and placed him under official investigation for publishing a document on Al Qaeda that was classified a defence secret, a judicial source said yesterday.Guillaume Dasquie was placed under official investigation overnight – one step short of pressing charges in France – after spending two nights in detention, the source said.Paris prosecutors said a second person, detained at the same time as Dasquie, had also been placed under official investigation, but declined to give the person’s name. The investigation relates to an article published in Le Monde in April entitled Sept 11, 2001 – The French knew a lot about it, in which Dasquie cited reports by the DGSE foreign intelligence service dating back to 2000 and 2001.Dasquie, an independent journalist, is accused of possessing classified defence documents and divulging classified files and information, the source said.“I’m profoundly upset by what I have gone through,”

One Way to Improve Your Music Journalist Relationship

An Interview With Iranian Expert and Journalist Barbara Slavin
    2007-10-21 21:16:45
The topic below was originally posted on my blog, the Intrepid Liberal Journal as well as The Peace Tree, the Independent Bloggers Alliance and Worldwide Sawdust.Barbara Slavin, senior diplomatic correspondent for USA Today since 1996 and author of the recently published book, Bitter Friends, Bosom Enemies: Iran, the U.S., and the Twisted Path to Confrontation (St. Martin’s Press), writes that,“Iran and the United States are like a once happily married couple that has gone through a bitter divorce. Harsh words have been exchanged – husband and wife have come to blows and employed others to inflict more punishment. Apologizing is hard and changing behavior even harder. This relationship is unequal, with one side or the other feeling more vulnerable at any given time and afraid the other will take advantage of concessions.”Currently, the public faces of both nations, presidents George W. Bush and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, have been content to throw rhetorical bombs and raise the diplomatic temperature – increasing the likelihood of war. Indeed, at times it appears that conservative hardliners in both countries are eager for conflict as a means to maintain their respective grips on power. The journey from the CIA backed coup that overthrew Iran’s democratically elected leader Mossadeq in 1953 and replaced him with the Shah, to the Islamic Revolution of 1979 and current tensions is replete with ill conceived schemes that damaged both nations. Slavin, using her extensive contacts among the powerful inside Iran and the United States, documents missed opportunities for reconciliation between both countries during the administrations of the first President Bush as well as Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. The combination of her remarkable access to people such as Madeline Albright, Condelezza Rice, Iranian reformers like former President Mohammad Khatami, longtime establishment figures such as Ali Rafsanjani, as well as dissidents like Akbar Ganji and everyday citizens

Liberal Associated Press “Journalist” Fails to Read Flawed Global Warming Study He Reported
    2007-09-15 06:55:18
As usual, the Associated Press disguised an editorial as a real article. The title of the editorial/ article was: “More Bad Air Days for U.S. Cities.” Underneath the title it says, “Study: 10 U.S. Cities Will Have Increase Unsafe Air Days If Global Warming Continues Unabated.” It turns out that the study was conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council in partnership with several universities, including Yale and Johns Hopkins, and was published in the scientific journal Climatic Change.First, it must be noted that the NRDC accepts funding from environmentalists and has a clear agenda according to its own website: “NRDC is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 1.2 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things.” Not only is it a lobbying organization by its own admission, this would imply a conflic

A Journalist for a Journalist by a Journalist
    2007-09-02 17:56:00
To employ a new favorite phrase, the "FUN" was in full effect last night in downtown Jamestown. Matt and I took in a pre-season Erie Otters hockey game at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena (JSBIA). I was admittedly pretty rusty in my hockey-watching skills since I purposefully blocked any knowledge of hockey out of my brain after a certain final game of the season on May 19th. Ahem. But as I said to the wife of Matt's boss, "Well, I feel like I can enjoy the impending Sabres' season because I don't have any expectations. God. I guess I really am a Western New Yorker!" The game ended in a tie with no overtime or shoot-out.SBIA is doing some cool things to enhance the facility to make spectator sports a little more comfortable. We got a peek at what will be a club lounge. Before the Rusty Nail was torn down, Arena staff bought/took out part of the bar with plans to install it in one corner of the lounge. The walls are painted a deep red with modern, wrought iron sconces. We

Burundi government intensifies attack on press freedom - third radio journalist illegally detained
    2006-11-30 02:40:00
From The Committe to Protect Journalists The Committee to Protect Journalists demands that three radio journalists jailed in Burundi in the past week, including Matthias Manirakiza detained today, be released immediately.“This looks more and more like a campaign to silence respected independent broadcasters who have spearheaded investigative reporting on human rights abuses and corruption,” said CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon. “We call on the government of Burundi to release Matthias Manirakiza and two journalists from Radio Publique Africaine immediately and unconditionally.” Manirakiza, director of Radio Isanganiro, was held over a story alleging a plan to stage an attack on the presidential palace. On November 22, editor Serge Nibizi and journalist Domitile Kiramvu of Radio Publique Africaine (RPA) were imprisoned on charges of threatening state security. Two days later, five independent radio stations organized a one-day media blackout to protest their imprisonment.Manirakiza was sent to the central prison in the capital Bujumbura after police questioned him about a story broadcast in August. It was not clear whether he had been charged. The report cited police sources as saying authorities planned to stage fake attacks on the homes of top officials to bolster their claims of a coup plot. Several top opposition leaders, including the former president, are currently on trial for alleged participation in the plot. Agence France-Presse quoted Manirakiza’s lawyer Raphael Gahungu as saying that his client was jailed for allegedly “authorizing the broadcast of information threatening to state and public security.”“Manirakiza’s fate had been determined beforehand," Gahungu also told AFP. "It was evident from the number of police officers sent here.” Radio Isanganiro is backed by the U.S.-based nongovernmental organization Search for Common Ground. Radio Publique Africaine’s director Alexis Sinduhije won an International Press Freedom Award from

Teen could get seven years for impersonating journalist.
    2006-08-21 20:42:04
Read This FirstVargoyle’s Comments:Yes he could get seven years for this one. He’s being charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument, falsifying business records, larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, criminal impersonation and criminal trespass. I really doubt he will get that though. If I were a judge I would just give him some community service, maybe like passing out fliers at the game! Now the guards that looked at these fake passes should be fired. Those are the guys that are really stupid here. Can’t they tell a fake pass when they see one? In this day and age of terrorism you think that they would be able to tell who should be there and who shouldn’t. Technorati Tags:news, mets, baseball, new york, journalism, fake id
