    The Hamdan Jury
    2008-08-07 10:58:40
Today, Andy McCarthy at National Review Online penned an excellent piece related to an 8-6-08 NY Times editorial concerning the verdicts in the Hamdan military commission trial at Gitmo. The results of this trial demonstrate that American military officers truly are the independent minded, moral self-thinkers we expect them to be. Sure, members of the military must "take and follow orders." But they must also be able to think for themselves and act in a moral way. This is especially true for the...(read more)...

    Jury Nullification saves America
    2008-05-05 10:28:58
"YOU, as one individual, cannot do much to effect legislation. But YOU can effectively defend the Constitution when a gun owner, a tax resister, or someone who knows he owns his individual body, is on trial for not following government-made laws that are both unconstitutional and violate human rights. The primary responsibility of any juror is to protect innocent humans from government tyranny. That means any violation of basic human rights should be nullified by you, the juror. This is your individual executive veto power, built into our justice system by our founders." ... read more...

She called to remind the people at the clerk's office that she was exempt because of her age."You need to come in and fill out the exemption forms," they said."I've already done that," she replied. "I did it last year.""You have to do it every year," she was told."Why?" came the response. "Do you think I'm going to get younger?"...

Anxiety of Jury Selection Should be a Reality TV Show
    2007-10-22 19:30:00
photo by Eric HamiltonToday I had to go to the downtown courthouse to fulfill my civic duty and potentially serve on a jury. For me, this was a dream come true. I am a big fan of the legal world and love to see it in action. I really wanted to be on the jury. When I got to the courthouse I was about twenty minutes early and so I sat down along with everyone else and immediately I was struck with panic. I tried to take deep breaths and that helped a little. I took some Clonozepam and worried that I wouldn't have enough time for it to kick in. I watched the minutes counting down and realized that if I needed to go to the restroom to let the panic explode, I could be late for the beginning and I didn't know what that would do. I didn't want to miss anything. So I pulled out my lappy and pulled up my/this blog- The Reality of Anxiety, and clicked on the label "Self Talk." I scanned the articles and read positive affirmations and similar situations and what I did to talk myself out of my panic. I opened up a word doc and typed as quickly as I could the following:"What am I telling myself to make me feel this way? I am all alone and that is scary. What if I get sick and I make myself late? What if I can’t eat breakfast or lunch with all of these strangers? What if I am sick all day long? What if people judge me? What if me getting sick makes them send me home? Positive Affirmation: I respect and believe in myself apart from others opinions. What if the worst case scenario happened? If I were to have a full blown panic attack where I have to leave and go to the restroom, and if it makes me late, or makes it so they send me home, I will still be just fine. My life will go on and I will get over it.First of all, look at all that you have already accomplished today. I found my way on where to go when the GPS was telling me something else. I made it here on time, all by myself. I can do anything I put my mind to. I am strong, capable and secure. I do what I...

    2007-06-04 21:28:58
By Jerry Markon and Allan LengelWashington Post Staff WritersMonday, June 4, 2007; 2:40 PMRep. William J. Jefferson was indicted today in a longstanding FBI corruption probe centering on allegations that he took bribes to promote high-tech business ventures in Africa. The Louisiana Democrat faces charges that include racketeering, money laundering, wire fraud and conspiracy to solicit bribes by a public official. The 16-count indictment was returned by a federal grand jury in Alexandria.Federal officials have scheduled a 3:30 p.m. news conference to discuss the 94-page indictment, which could land Jefferson in prison for life if he is convicted on all counts. The charges cap a long and tumultuous investigation that was stalled for months because of a legal battle over the constitutionality of an FBI raid on Jefferson's office last May. The raid came after the FBI found $90,000 in the freezer of his Capitol Hill home.A political and legal maelstrom followed the raid, prompting President...
