| Kansas Governor Suggests Decoupling Could Have Prevented Budget Cuts | | 2008-07-10 23:00:00 | | State Tax Notes (subscription required) reports that Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius regrets that the state missed out on $87 million in uncollected corporate income tax by staying in compliance with federal tax law. She believes Kansas's legislature should have voted to "decouple" from the recent federal stimulus package that permits companies "bonus depreciation"—that is, a chance to accelerate the write-off of their assets for tax purposes. For example, if a company was writing off the value of a large printing press over 20 years, a state that permits bonus depreciation (like Kansas) will allow the company to move up into the current year a large fraction of the write-off. However, in future years, the write-off will necessarily be smaller. The idea behind this bonus depreciation is to provide corporations faster access to money for business expansion, reinvestment and the acquisition of new labor—critical to business operations in a fluctuating eco | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |

| Ad Wars: Dr. No And The Kansas Senate Race | | 2008-06-26 13:15:31 | | Check out our entire video library at Political Realm TV.Presidential Watch: John McCainThe McCain camp is hitting Barack Obama on energy in its latest web video, portraying Obama as Jame Bond villain Dr. No. The video attacks Obama for opposing offshore drilling, the gas tax holiday, and nuclear energy expansion. It's kind of a dated reference--Dr. No was the first Bond film released in 1962--though it's a web-only video, so the audience isn't that big anyway.Senate Watch: KansasRepublican Senator Pat Roberts has released his third campaign ad, "Fly," which focuses on his support for the airline industry in the state. Earlier this year, the Pentagon accepted a contract offer from Airbus over Boeing, which has a factory in Wichita. A recent review of the decision, however, found significant errors in the selection process and moved to reopen the bidding, which will give Boeing another chance to win the contract.

| | Kansas City Royals could win NL West | | 2008-06-24 13:15:00 | | The Kansas City Royals could be the best team in the west.Make that the NL West. The Royals now reside in last place in the AL Central. But if they moved to the NL West, it would obviously be a different story. It’s no coincidence the Royals are on a three-game winning streak … it’s because they are playing teams from the Weak, Weak NL West.In fact, Kansas City is 5-2 overall against the NL West. The Royals won two of three against both the Arizona Diamondbacks (on the road) and San Francisco Giants (at home) before Monday night’s home win against the Colorado Rockies.Luckily for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, they don’t have to play the Mighty Royals this season.Much of Kansas City’s success is due to closer Joakim Soria, who already has 20 saves. Yes, this is the same Soria the Padres let go to Kansas City in the Rule V draft two years ago.As weak as the Padres’ bullpen has been, couldn’t they use somebody like Soria right about now? | | By: San Diego Sporting | | |

| | | Bartolo Colon Proves He Can Help Boston Be "Great In 2008"...Red Sox 6 Kansas City 3 | | 2008-05-22 04:38:00 | | The Boston Red Sox got JUST what they needed Wednesday night at Fenway Park as newly acquired veteran Bartolo Colon, three years removed from winning the AL Cy Young Award, pitched five solid innings in a game which the Red Sox won easily by a score of 6-3. It was their sixth win in a row and improved their MLB best record to 30-19. Colon will be our fifth starter for the rest of the year, and, barring injuries, should be able to win 12 plus games. How was he last night? He gave up six hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out two in a nifty first outing. Here's what his catcher, Jason Varitek, had to say...“He’s going to help us,” catcher Jason Varitek said. “He threw some good strikes, he elevated the ball sometimes, he did good. I saw some 94 MPH's up there. You’ve got to remember it’s still his first outing. It was a good starting point for building his strength.”Peter here, and if he progresses with each and every start the way I think he will, Boston got away | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |
| | Five Hits JUST Enough...Boston 2 Kansas City 1 | | 2008-05-21 05:03:00 | | The Boston Red Sox made five hits work for them Tuesday night in a 2-1 victory over the visiting KC Royals. It was the fifth straight victory for the first place world champions. Justin Masterson made his second big league start another good one, going six and one third innings, giving up one run on three hits, walking three and punching out five. He threw 91 pitches in that span, and was quickly sent back to Pawtucket to make room for tonight's starter, Bartolo Colon. More on him later. Terry Francona had this to say about his young starter... "He threw two pitches," Francona said, "the two-seamer and the slider. To lefties, he didn't throw a lot of changeups tonight, and they were getting out over the plate and looking a little comfortable. But he works quick, got a lot of ground balls from righthanders, and got us pretty deep into the game."Peter here, and that's right. | | AN AMERICAN WARNING - The Kansas City "Smart Port"... the not so smart idea | | 2008-05-14 19:55:00 | | The Kansas City Smart Port.
Many people have begun to wonder about the SPP, the Trans Texas Corridor, NAFTA, and all of the things that go into this evolving problem that many believe will lead into a North American Community/Union and ultimately a common currency and total loss of sovereignty for Canada, Mexico and the United States.
I’ve taken some time off to really dig into one aspect that I find the most interesting. It’s one piece of evidence that I feel needs to be looked at so that the other pieces can be put properly in their place.
What I find most amazing is how these people/agencies build their sites. Furthermore, the information that almost seems uncoordinated at times. I say this because on one site you can see a piece of information, on the next site you can see even more. Where one site will refute a certain piece, the other site confirms it.

The road runs in a general southwest-northeast direction from the Oklahoma border south of Wichita via Wichita, Topeka, and Lawrence to Kansas City, Kansas. The Kansas Turnpike Act defined the turnpike to be built from Oklahoma to Kansas City, Kansas. The turnpike is owned and maintained by the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA), headquartered in Wichita. The Kansas Turnpike was built from 1954 to 1956, predating the Interstate Highway System. The turnpike presently has 27 interchanges and two barrier toll plazas. Exit numbers are assigned by mileage from south to east. After passing the Bonner Springs interchange, exit numbers change to match the mileage of Interstate 70 east from the Colorado border. | | | | | Watch Out Folks: Kansas is Really Good | | 2008-01-15 18:21:00 | | Just when sports fans were thinking that Lawrence, Kansas, was the home of football stars such as Todd Reesing and Aqib Talib, they forgot to remember that KU Hoops is always number on campus. After last night's thirty point victory against Big XII rival Oklahoma, the 17-0 Jayhawks hoops team may be the number one team in the nation. Even better than the likes of UCLA, North Carolina, or Memphis? Yes, and here are three reasons why.Big Double D's:Last season when playing against big, physical teams such as UCLA, the Jayhawks experienced a lot of difficulties scoring points in the paint and controlling the glass. However, that is not the case this season due to the rise of the double d's: Darrell Arthur and Darnell Jackson. Arthur has been the dominating low-post presence that the Jayhawks have been missing since the graduation of Wayne Simeon and Nick Collison. Against Oklahoma on Monday, the 6'9" sophomore used an array of post moves to dominate the Sooners' frontcourt by scoring fourteen points in addition to eight rebounds. While many teams like North Carolina and UCLA have great big men in Tyler Hansbrough and Kevin Love, most don't have two imposing giants. Arthur's frontcourt mate Darnell Jackson makes the Jayhawks even more lethal. The imposing 6'8" 250 pound senior is having a breakout season , averaging double figures for the first time in his career and providing great defense in the paint. Like Arthur, Jackson also had a big game against the Sooners on Monday, scoring seventeen points and logging eight rebounds. An up-tempo but smart Backcourt:When the NCAA Tournament rolls around in March, teams that are going to make it to the Final Four must have exceptional backcourt play. The past few NCAA Champions, Florida, North Carolina, and UConn have all been captained by experienced, veteran guards such as Taurean Green, Raymond Felton, and Ben Gordon. Kansas's strength by far is in the backcourt with Mario Chalmers, Brandon Rush, Russell Robinson and S | | By: West Coast Bias | | |

| | Cross-Border Tax Skirmish Between Missouri and Kansas | | 2007-11-19 00:00:00 | | Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas are separated by a river, and a good number of people cross that river daily to live in one state and work in the other. Many end up filing tax returns in both states, and to minimize economic distortions, both states allowed the other's residents to take the same property tax deduction when itemizing. Earlier this year, Missouri repealed the deduction for nonresident taxpayers, seeking to grab a few million dollars even if it hindered interstate travel and commerce. Rep. Kenny Wilk of Kansas demands that Missouri rescind the tax increase on out-of-staters or else his state will retaliate: Said Wilk: "You recognize our laws and we recognize yours. If you disagree we will tax your people."Wilk, according to a recent Associated Press story, is planning to fast-track tax legislation, once drafted, through the House in January. | | Nebraska +19 vs Kansas | | 2007-11-02 23:13:00 | | Nebraska had won 36 in a row vs Kansas before 2005. They have split the last two years, so Nebraska has won a meager 37 of the last 38 in this series. Now they are 20 point underdogs to the Jayhawks in Lawrence… in football!!! I can believe this line in basketball, but football? I know that Nebraska has not been relative on the national championship scene since 2002, but Kansas has not been on the national scene since the 1950s.Throw in that Tom Osborne said on air this week that there will be a new coaching staff next year [to decide the fate of the walk on program] and you have a sinking ship (or cornhusker). I know, I know – Nebraska only lost by 3 in Austin last week, but I am not sold on Texas either by any means. Texas hasn’t been impressive in any game since their loss to Texas AM last year. | | | Kansas: Two races in one day | | 2007-10-01 06:34:51 | | Did you enjoy today's marathon of a race? I am so flabbergasted I don't know where to start. I'm just going to type out what is on my mind, so please forgive me if I bounce around from one thing to another.First of all, yeah Junior plowed into Kyle Busch. Yes, it was Junior's fault but geez Kyle's comments were a bit harsh for me to swallow."I just stayed in my lane to try and let him go on the outside because I knew he was going to have a run in the corner, and I got run into the back of and spun out down the straightaway for absolutely no reason," Busch said. "It was a stupid move on his part. Obviously, I'm sure these guys he's going to be working with next year don't really appreciate this, because they've got a championship they can win this year and he doesn't. I don't know what he was thinking, really, or what the problem was. It's very, very unfortunate."Earnhardt accepted full responsibility. "We put the No. 5 car out," he said. "That was an accident. I want to apologize to his fans and their team and Kyle. That was a bad mistake on my part."I am kind of confused about NASCAR's reasons to restart the race after the storm when the race was more than halfway. I am sure NASCAR wanted to give the fan's a bang for their buck, but most of the fans left the racetrack when the second round of rain started. I am sure the fans all thought that Tony won the race and went home. Uh, wrong. I don't know how I feel about it, I tell ya I am scratching my head on this one folks.Nevertheless, NASCAR restarted the race and all hell broke loose. The first accident happened when the 21 got loose. Martin Truex Jr. would have faired better if Tony Stewart didn't punt him from behind. When sparks flew because Stewart's tire went, Tony received a taste of his own medicine by Kurt Busch and thus the next caution flew. Tony took out Carl Edwards along with himself. Why didn't the #20 crew get Tony in the pits when his tire was severely rubbing beforehand is beyond me.I know I am going to get comments about the fact that both the Martin Truex and the Carl Edwards incident were unavoidable, however I am pretty ticked off at Stewart regardless.I figured after they cleaned up the track from the #42 car's mess we would have a great shootout between the 16, 07 and the 48. Green...white...checkers right? Nope. It was too dark so NASCAR ended it under caution. PFFT! Kansas Speedway needs to invest into getting lights. On top of everything, there was mass confusion about who actually won the race. However, NASCAR said Biffle won the race regardless of the fact he didn't keep up with the pace car and was almost out of gas. Basically when the caution came out for Montoya, the field was frozen and as long as Biffle maintained a reasonable speed to the start finish line, there isn't any rule infraction (that's what NASCAR said or close to it). I have more to say, but I will wait until tomorrow to do that.

| | 'This One's For John' -- A Title Remembered 10-Years Later -- Week 1 -- Kansas City Chiefs | | 2007-09-21 19:56:18 | | It's been 10 years since John Elway and the 1997 Denver Broncos won that elusive Super Bowl Title. In celebration of that achievement, we'll go week by week through the 1997 season and remember the wins and losses, the highs and lows, the good and the bad of a Super Bowl Championship season. First, we look back to 8/31/97, Week 1 of the 1997 season when the Kansas City Chiefs travelled to Mile High Stadium to face the Broncos. Much like the hometeam, the Chiefs had huge expectations of ending a multiple-decade Super Bowl drought, and tensions were high heading into Week 1. Below is the story of the game, a convincing 19-3 Bronco win, which saw the return of John Elway after he had missed most of the pre-season with an arm injury. It was the beginning of an unforgettable season, for Elway, the Broncos, and Broncos fans everywhere! It didn't take long for the Denver Broncos to claim first place in the AFC West. | | Kansas City RB and Team Aren’t Even Close with New Deal | | 2007-07-22 00:37:12 | |
Update: RB Larry Johnson is seeking around $28 million in guaranteed money, while the Chiefs have countered with an offer of between $11 and $14 million guaranteed, NFL Network’s Adam Schefter reports.
What’s going to happen: Johnson deserves more than the $1.9 million he’s due to make this year, but he and the Chiefs are still around $14 million apart, they are not even in the same ballpark (stadium) with this deal. Schefter writes that Johnson is “entrenched” in his stance, and won’t change his asking price until Kansas City’s offer is more in line with how he values his production. A long and grueling holdout remains a very likely possibility. My Opinion for 2007: This on-going saga it will be smooth for both parties (sides) and very easy to understand: Chiefs back Larry Johnson will play all 16 games in the Red ‘n’ Yellow uni’s, with the K.C.
