| The Dropper Loop - Fishing Knots and Rigs | | 2008-06-29 04:20:20 | | The dropper loop is probably my most used fishing knot (I suppose it is more that a loop than a knot). Before I head out on the water I have usually tied at least ten of these loops. The dropper loop is used above a sinker to attach a hook and this type of rig is perfect for bottom fishing. Where I come from this is called the paternoster rig and is widely accepted as one of the best reef fishing rigs available. The dropper loop knot is fairly easy to tie after a bit of practice. I personally prefer to tie a twisted dropper loop as I find that the loops don't tangle with the main line as easily as the hooks sit away from the leader. This loop works well in both monofilament and fluorocarbon leader materials. How to tie a dropper loopThe first video shows a regular dropper loop and the second demonstrates a twisted dropper loop. I would advice to test both loops out and see which works best for you. | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Blood Knot - Fishing Knots | | 2008-06-22 23:31:09 | | The blood knot is probably the most famous fishing knot and is also called the clinch knot in various parts of the world. It is probably one of the first knots most anglers learn and some people may even remember their grandpa teaching it to them like I do.The blood knot is popular as it is easy to tie, can be used in many different types of line and is sufficiently strong for most fishing situations. It can also be tied in the dark making it quite popular amongst night anglers. This knot also comes in a couple of improved forms, which I have posted instructions to before, including the:locked blood knotimproved clinch knotDespite the fact that many people eventually graduate to more advanced knots the blood knot is an important knot to have in your knot tying arsenal. How to tie a blood knotThis is a great little animated video showing the process of correctly tying a blood knot. | Figure Eight Knot - Fishing Knots (with video) | | 2008-06-15 20:27:10 | | The figure eight knot is one of the easiest fishing knots to tie and can be used for terminal tackle or as a very good stopper knot. It is generally used at night and in low light conditions because it is very easy to tie. It is sufficiently strong for some situations, but is certainly one of the weaker connection knots used today. A popular way to strengthen the knot is to double the line to tie this knot. However, this knot is still not recommended for tackling big fish. This is also a popular rock climbing/boating knot that provides a strong connection and can be tied in a matter of seconds. How to tie a figure eight knot | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Seaguar Knot - Fluorocarbon knots for fishing | | 2008-05-28 04:52:17 | | Fluorocarbon is one of the latest fishing fashions, but apart from simply being in fashion, it is also a fantastic innovative product. If you are unfamiliar fluorocarbon it is a leader material that is basically invisible in water meaning fish feel more comfortable to bite.I was a little skeptical when I switched to fluorocarbon about a year ago, but have been pleasantly surprised by the bite rate, abrasion resistance and durability. The one downside to the product is susceptibility to friction and this problem can be avoided by tying really good knots and lubricating the knots well. One of the best knots for fluorocarbon is the Seaguar knot designed specifically for joining this type of line to the mainline. How to tie the Seaguar KnotTo make it easy I found a video! | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Fishing Knots: World's Fair Knot | | 2008-05-19 01:41:18 | | The world's fair knot was created by Gary Martin and was selected by a panel of professionals as the best knot out of 498 entries in the great knot search at the 1982 world fair. This fishing knot is quick to tie, does not slip and is very strong. These features make the world's fair knot a very versatile and popular knot with many anglers. Most anglers use this knot with monofilament lines although, because it is well known for a lack of slipping, may also be tied in braided lines in some situations. How to tie the world's fair knotWhile this knot is fairly simple to tie it does take a some practice to perfect. | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Fishing Knots: King Sling Knot | | 2008-05-14 20:30:26 | | During my last serious fishing trip I decided to try a new knot recommended to me by a good fishing friend. I had been whining to him about my crank bait (lures to me) knots and he suggested I try the king sling knot. The king sling knot is an easy knot to tie and offers a decent amount of strength. However, its real benefit is that it allows crank baits to work freely and look a whole lot more lifelike. In my tests I found that while working the lure it looked a lot more natural and the action was quite enticing to the fish. The strike to hook up rate was good and I was quite impressed with the knot. How to tie the king sling knotclick to enlarge | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Fishing Knots: Berkley Braid Knot | | 2008-05-08 06:46:22 | | For quite some time now I have had emails from readers asking which knot I thought was the absolute best for braid fishing lines like fireline, finns, suffix etc. For years now I have personally used an improved clinch knot with increased wraps on braided lines and have not had many problems. Early this year, for some reason, I went through a period of mysterious knot failures and decided to test a new braid knot to see if it made any difference. The knot I tested was the Berkley Braid Knot. The Berkley Braid Knot is a knot that has been tested (and I guess invented) by the research and development team at Berkley. It is tied by doubling the braid and this has increased knot strength in braided lines. Fortunately it is very simple to tie and is basically a clinch knot tied in the doubled line (see instructions below). I have been quite happy with the performance of the knot and I am sticking with it for now.(Click to enlarge) | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Fishing Knots: Turle Knot (and double turle knot) | | 2008-05-04 06:16:15 | | The turle knot is a little known snare knot used to attach hooks to a leader. It is one of the most simple knots to tie, but is unfortunately quite a weak knot and is not usually recommended unless targeting very small fish. However, the strength of the knot can be significantly improved by tying the double turle knot, which I will also explain below.Turle knot1. Pass the line through the eye of the hook and make a simple loop.2. Carry the end of the line on to make a Simple Overhand Knot upon the loop and pass the loop over the hook3. Tighten into shapeDouble Turle KnotPass the line through and make two simple loops. Then make a Simple Overhand Knot around both loops. Pass these loops over the hook. | Fishing Knots: Thumb Knot | | 2008-04-28 01:59:22 | | The thumb knot is one of my favorite knots and with practice is very quick and easy to tie. It is a popular knot for attaching hooks, swivels and rings to very heavy monofilament or fluorocarbon fishing line. The knot tightens down very well and provides a strong connection.note - this knot should not be confused with the overhand knot, which is also called the thumb knot in rope tying circlesIt will take some practice to get this knot correctClick to enlarge1. Thread your hook with the lineand make a loop so that the hookis suspended from the loop.2. Wrapping your left thumband loop with the tag three times.3. Push the tag back under those three wraps.4. Hold both ends and ease the wraps off your thumb, one at a time, in sequence.5. Close the knot by exerting pressureon the loop against the tag. | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Fishing Knots: Flemish Eye Knot (wire knot) | | 2008-04-22 03:18:41 | | Sometimes fishing with a wire trace in unavoidable, especially when targeting fish with razor sharp teeth. Obviously wire leader requires different knots than regular fishing line and one of the most popular knots is the Flemish eye knot. The Flemish eye knot is one of the most popular methods for attaching hooks, rings and swivels to a wire trace, but it can also be used for very heavy monofilament that can be difficult to tie. It is highly regarded for use with multi strand wire because it allows a degree of looseness which removes the pressure from the crimped sleeve. How to tie a Flemish eye knotnote: a a crimping tool is needed for this knot | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Fishing Knots: Cat's Paw Knot (offshore swivel knot) | | 2008-04-17 04:49:48 | | The cat's paw knot, also called an offshore swivel knot, is used to attach a swivel or ring to a double line with a complete loop (like the bimini twist knot). It is widely accepted as the best knot for this application and is an extremely strong and effective knot that resists slipping. It is usually tied in monofilament or fluorocarbon fishing lines and can be tied in many different line strengths. For general applications follow this guide: 3 loops for greater than 50 lb line4 loops for lines between 30 lb and 50 lb5 loops for line between 12 lb and 30 lb6 loops for line less than 12 lbsHow to tie a cat's paw knot | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Fishing Knots: Centauri Knot | | 2008-04-15 08:18:18 | | I am always going on about taking the time to learn good quality fishing knots. I believe learning to tie solid knots will improve your fishing almost more than any other factor and I wish someone had told me the importance of great knots earlier in my fishing life (I leaned the hard way!)The Centauri knot is another high quality, strong and easy to tie knot that every angler should know. It is an extremely versatile knot and can be tied in a wide range of line strengths, line types (including braid with increased wraps) and diameters while retaining up to 90% of the breaking strain. This knot is highly regarded because it produces very little friction and does not distort the line. How to tie a Centauri knotFollow this animated video to guide you.Remember to lubricate the line with saliva before tightening. | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Basic fishing knots | | 2008-04-02 01:21:50 | | I have posted lots about fishing knots before, but I have never really put all of the information together in one spot for convenience. Hopefully this post will be of use to people looking for the basic fishing knots that every angler should know.Tying good quality fishing knots is a very important part of fishing. There is nothing worse than losing a fish of a lifetime only to find your knots were not up to scratch (trust me I know). Fortunately, tying quality knots is not all that hard and there are some very strong knots that are even fairly easy to tie in the dark.Basic fishing knotsIf you click on the following links they will take you to my original posts with instructions or an instructional video for tying the knots. | Fishing Knots: Haywire Twist (wire leader) | | 2008-03-25 19:53:02 | | The haywire twist is a popular method of joining a hook, swivel or lure to single-strand wire leader. When tied correctly the connection is stronger than the wire itself because of the double-wraps. It is a popular knot for trolling and can be used for big and small game leaders when targeting fish with nasty teeth including wahoo, barracuda, mackerel and sharks. The wire prevents the fish biting off the leader. The haywire twist is declining in popularity since the invention of knotable wire trace, but is still a very useful knot to learn. How to tie a haywire twist - video | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Boating Knots - Water Bowline Knot (with video) | | 2008-03-19 02:16:36 | | If you have spent any time on the water you have undoubtedly experienced, or seen, engine trouble of some kind. I think that my old man and I have been towed in about 5 times and it never gets more enjoyable. However, most boaties are friendly people and it only takes a bit of a wave or a call over the radio for someone to come to your aid. This is where the water bowline knot comes into good use.The water bowline knot is one of the best knots for towing a boat with another boat because it can take the jarring towing motions and not become lose. I recommend that every boat owner should know this knot before heading out on the water. How to tie a water bowline knot - video | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Ice Fishing Knots | | 2008-03-02 19:07:24 | | Like all forms of fishing ice fishing requires strong knots that can handle the tough conditions they will be put through. Choosing the correct knots for ice fishing depends on the line you are using. Contrary to popular belief you do not need a special type of line for this form of fishing either monofilament or braided fishing line will work well with a monofilament or fluorocarbon leader to withstand any abrasion.Ice fishing knotsLine to leaderThere are many good knots for this situation and the knots listed below work equally well with monofilament or braid. Just remember to add some extra turns if using braid.Albright knotThis knot works well joining lines of very different diameters. You can find instructions (and a video) for this knot at my earlier post - how to tie an albright knot.Uni to Uni (Double Uni) KnotThis knot is my personal favorite for joining my line to my leader. It is easy to tie, but still retains its strength. You can find instructions for this knot at my earli | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Fishing Knots: Albright Knot | | 2008-02-28 23:31:01 | | When I was writing my fly fishing knot tying post the other day it dawned on me that I have never posted the famous albright knot on this blog in 123 posts, which is a pretty big oversight really. The albright knotThis knot is used to attach two lines of different diameters together. Often used in fly fishing for attaching the thin backing line to thicker fly line. In recent times it is being used successfully to attach modern braided lines to monofilament or fluorocarbon. It provides a very strong connection and is relatively easy to tie with practice.Instructions1. Loop the heavier line. Pass the lighter line around the formed loop. 2. Make approximately 10 wraps with the lighter line wrapping from left to right. Hold these wraps in place. On the 10th wrap, come around and then through the remaining loop. Taking the standing line in your right hand pull gently as you push the wraps with your left hand towards the closed loop, keeping the wraps together. Pull the tag tight then pull on | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Fishing Knots: Palomar Knot (video) | | 2008-02-12 19:10:38 | | When I was trying to tie this knot the first time I was so confused as it can be called two different things, but the knots are exactly the same. The palomar knot is a high strength fishing knot that is suggested for use with braided fishing line. However in a recent fishing magazine tests this knot proved far from adequate when tied with braid failing at anywhere between 40-70% if the stated breaking strain. However this knot is still very effective when tied with monofilament and is quick and easy to tie. This knot is also useful when tying a drop shot rig with soft plastics. | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Fishing Knots: Joe Miller Knot (video) | | 2008-02-07 21:54:10 | | This knot is basically an improvement on the clinch knot. It is really easy and quick to tie and is reputedly a fantastically strong knot. It retains a high level of the original lines breaking strain. You can tie this knot in many different line strengths and the only change you will need to make is the number of wraps. | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Jansik Knot - Muskie Fishing Knots and Rigs | | 2008-01-22 22:20:19 | | This knot is well known in muskie fishing circles and is well regarded as one of the strongest fishing knots tested when tied correctly. Luckily it is fairly simple to tie and can be tied in the dark with some practice.1.Put 15cm of line through the eye of the hook.2. Bring it around in a circle and put the end through again.Making a second circle, pass then end through a third time.3. Holding the three circles of line against each other, wrap the end three times around the circles.Either hold the hook steady with pliers, or make it fast to boat's rigging or safety lines.4. Holding strain on the hook, pull on both ends of the line to tighten. | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Fishing Knots and Rigs - nail knot (video) | | 2008-01-11 04:31:02 | | The nail knot is a popular fly fishing knot and is used to attach leader butt to fly line or to attach backing to fly line. This knot can also used to make float stoppers. Just substitute a small straw or hard plastic tube in place of fly line and use rod wrapping thread in place of the leader material. Many anglers suggest that this knot should not be used for big fish due to fact that the knot depends on the outer coating of the fly line for strength. | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |

| Boating Knots: Anchor Bend | | 2007-12-28 05:30:22 | | Ok this isn't a fishing knot in the normal sense of a word, but is a knot every fisher that uses a boat and anchor should know. The Anchor Bend knot is used for connecting the anchor rope to the boat, which is probably one of the most important knots on the boat! It is easy to tie and is a very secure and safe knot for attaching the anchor. | | By: The Ultimate Fishing Blog | | |
