    KOH SAMUI - Thailand
    2008-01-07 21:59:00
A couple of decades ago, Thailand's third-largest offshore island woke up and found itself famous. Briefly forming part of the 16th-century maritime trade network established by the Chinese Ming-Dynasty admiral Cheng Ho, Koh Samui had subsequently disappeared from the world map and slumbered in peaceful obscurity until modern times. The local fishermen even routed the Japanese forces who tried to capture the island during World War II. But then the waves of world-travelling flower children padded down the hight-flying trail through Kathmandu, Goa and Bali. Arriving here, they bedded down in thatched huts beneath the palm tress and wandered the beaches in sarongs, silver anklets and in search of self-identification. Until the recent completion of the flowerbed airstrip, however, the time consuming overland trek via Surat Thani and the two hour sea crossing from Ban Don or Don Sak deterred all but these hardy back packers. Now the Bangkok connection has been established, and the wild and woolly travelers have moved on to pastures new. With new luxury resorts sprouting up along its shores, the palm clad isle off the 'elephant's trunk' is rapidly switching into a higher powered suntan circuit. The guests are as international as ever, but the drop out gear of yore has given way to sporting-chic fashions you might also find in the Caribbean or on the Cote d'Azur. Tourism has become big business, and all the attendant beach-fun paraphernalia has been brought in, from scuba to parasailing. So far, however, Koh Samui and the 80-odd neighboring islands within the archipelago have mercifully avoided the rabid development which has overtaken Pattaya and more recently Phuket. Until the basting begins in earnest, you can still find peace here amidst some of the loveliest and most varied island scenery in the Gulf of Thailand: jungle clad mountains, cascading waterfalls, crystal seas and a ring of shimmering beaches. The tranquil villages nestle in quiet bays or between the coc

    Thai Boxing stadiums (Koh Samui)
    2007-12-25 18:52:00
Thai Boxing stadiumsThe Lamai Stadium is located in South Lamai, between Ring Road and Lamai Beach Road. Another ring is found in a bar area in the middle of the Beach Road. One of the first foreign operated MUAYTHAI Gyms in Thailand, The Lamai Gym in Koh Samui has come a long way from when it first opened its doors to young and eager Muaythai enthusiasts back in 1989. Before the inter-net or fax machines being commonplace office items, the only way you could have heard of it was by word-of-mouth.People may still remember the outdoor weights area and the old slip ’n slide boxing ring where there were often up to a dozen guys training at once, turning the whole training area into a swimming pool of sweat and aggression, and those who weren’t lucky enough to fit into the ring were placed out the back of the gym in the dirt, or how early every morning when most every one on the island was sleeping, a bunch of Thais and foreigners would be working up a sweat with morning training and by the afternoon the Gym was simply exploding with action. Now as everyone involved in Muaythai knows as they knew then, this is what every other Thai gym was like, so what made it so special... Well, the major difference can be found in the details: The location of course is definitely unique – Koh Samui, way out on the ocean isle, there exists a very different energy in the air, the people, and most importantly for those into Muay, the energy of the camp - People stayed in Bungalows near the Gym and the old Flamingo Lamai Stadium, where once a week, open air fights were held and, in those days, especially for the foreign visitors to the camp and the occasional tourist, it was like being at the circus, as people from all over the island would show up for the show, having come to see the ring sport rally. Fifteen years down the road and how things have changed. Even though the gym has moved from its original location it hasn’t lost any of its allure and only increased in it’s char

    Ever Green Resort (Koh Samui)
    2007-12-24 22:26:00
Ever Green Resort, Chaweng BeachThis is my third holiday to Koh Samui, each time staying at a different hotel, so I will try and give you a sound critique. Firstly, cannot say enough good things about the Evergreen Resort. The rooms (I stayed in a Superior Villa) are clean, comfortable and well maintained. It is a great choice for the budget traveler (excellent value for money). Most of the staff were very helpful, courteous and spoke a little English. The resort itself is well located in the heart of Chaweng. It was less than a 1-minute walk from my room to the shops, restaurants, pubs and nightlife. In the other direction, it was only a 1-minute walk to the (very crowded) beach. The only slight annoyance is the hotel is located under the flight path to the airport (although there is a curfew between 11.00pm and 6.00am). You do not want to stay any further north up the beach because the rock reef makes it dangerous to swim (you will see what I mean at low tide). The beach is far better, safer and quieter the further south you go. My recommendation is, if you fall into the 15 to 35 age group, looking for the heart of Chaweng nightlife and a crowded vibrant beach, then this is a great place to stay. In contrast, if you are looking for quiet beach to kick back, swim, relax and read a good book, then I suggest you stay further south. I hope you find this information helpful.review by Bill FryarStandard Villa1,210Superior Villa2,090Deluxe Room2,750Junior Suite4,400Extra Bed700

    Big cleanup day (Koh Samui)
    2007-12-24 22:17:00
The Koh Samui District Office has set aside Dec. 1 as a Clean-up Day for the whole island, days after it reeled from weeks-long continual rains that flooded large parts of the island.Koh Samui District Chief Adisorn Kamnerdsiri said the clean-up activity will also serve as preparation of the island to welcome tourists during the coming Christmas and New Year celebrations. Suratthani Gov. Vinai Baupradit will lead provincial and municipal officials and employees who will join the clean-up activity. The private sector will participate as well.Workers will do patch-up work on damaged roads and bridges. Mr. Adisorn said the floods had wrought millions of baht’s worth of damage as well as inconvenienced the people and disrupted businesses. Water run-offs from mountains and garbage blocked drainage channels and dumped sands on roads and streets. Many tourists were also discouraged to go to Samui when it suffered from the well-publicized bad weather. The storm stranded over 1,000 passengers at the Samui International Airport for one whole day. The district chief expressed his concern over the tarnished tourism image of Samui, especially since the floods came just before December, considered the high tourist season. He expressed the hope that the clean-up activity would restore the image of Samui as a good holiday destination.—Chat Anupan

    Koh Samui History
    2007-12-24 21:56:00
Koh Samui has been settled for about 1500 years. The first arrivals here were fishermen. The island is to be found on 500 years old maps from Chinese Ming dynasty. Fishing and later coconuts has been the major source of income on Koh Samui island.Until 1940, there were no roads nor vehicles on Koh Samui. Its inhabitants lived there simply and almost without contact with the outside world.People moved on the island on foot or by boat by following coasts. For example, to go from Maenam to Lamai, it took several hours of walking through the mountaineous jungle, and going there and back in the same day was impossible.Tourism was there unknown, because there was simply no convenient means to go to the island. The only way of reaching it from mainland was with the daily connection by night boat, what took more than 6 hours of crossing from Suratthani to Nathon. And by arriving here, it was necessary even to count several hours to reach final destination. The firsts construction plans of a road were abandoned because of the numerous mountaineous regions of the island and the impossibility to bring on it construction machines. But in 1967, Khun Dilok Suthiklom, the "leader" of the island of that time decided that something must be made for the development and asked the country government for help Two main obstacles were the high hill between Nathon and Maenam and the rocky and mountaineous side between Lamai and Chaweng which had to be blown up to allow the road to rise in an acceptable angle.Trees and rocks were removed to clear the way which as final result was a narrow track which made the round of the island. The beginning of the construction of the road began with a long and enormous manual labour of several hundred persons "to clean" a way around the island. The first years before the concrete laying, it was not rare that everybody came out from car (excepted the driver obviously) to push and to help it go up hillsides. The sector between Lamai and Chaweng had to be cut in t

Learning Thai Massage in Koh Samui
    2007-11-20 22:50:54
By : Alister BredeeMarloas is nineteen years old and she comes from Rotterdam in Holland. She is in gap year from school and has taken the time to travel in Asia. She has been on the road for four months and as the trip winds to a close she has come to the Health Oasis Resort in Koh Samui to learn Thai massage. “This is one of the best things I did on my trip,’ she enthuses. “While I was traveling I had massages. It felt so nice that I decided I would like to learn how to do it!”“It’s just for fun. I have learned it for myself and to help my friends and family.”No, she does not want to become a massage therapist. Her goal is to train as a medical doctor, and this preparation in massage could well help her in her aspiration to study western medicine. Her twenty-hour course stretched over a leisurely five and a half days. So she has plenty of time for rest and relaxation in the swimming pool and on the beach beside. She laughs when she says, “I enjoyed the rest!” “I also really liked the Course with Thai instructor Nan.” Nan, by the way started her studies at the prestigious Wat Pho in Bangkok which serves as the premier massage teaching facility in Thailand.“She really gets the students to practice a lot. She’s very kind and supportive, too and that helped a whole lot!” Says the young Dutch student.“She taught me to apply my whole body in making the massage strokes.”Marloas explains she was always afraid that her hands would become tired whilst massaging, but she was surprised to find that instead she felt energised.“I now know the pressure points and understand how to make people relax.” The course that Marloas attended is not designed to turn out professional therapists. It is certificated but is designed for self-development and general interest. For those eager to learn Thai massage for professional use, Health Oasis Resort offers a more intensive fifty hour period of instruction, and this too comes with a certificate. Ma

    Million-dollar homes for Koh Samui
    2007-09-14 17:04:00
Koh Samui, once a popular island getaway for backpackers, is turning into Thailand's latest market for million-dollar villas, international real-estate firm CB Richard Ellis (CBRE) said Tuesday. "Although 50 per cent of the villa developments in Samui are in the $1 million and below price range, we are spotting an emerging market for top-end villas which achieve prices in excess of $2 million," said Prakaipeth Meechoosarn, manager of CBRE's newly opened Samui office.
